Day Students

Day Student Program 15 Percent of Grier students contribute to the community as day students in grades 7–12. Taking full advantage of the academic program, the immersive experiences, and the campus facilities, day students may represent just 15% of the student body but they are 100% Grier girls. Day students at Grier benefit from the same educational opportunities as boarding students—the wide range of advanced curricular options, small classes with motivated college-bound peers, and the immersive programs that expand every girl’s school and life experience. They stretch themselves at Grier, in ways they wouldn’t in other settings—challenging themselves more in the classroom, on the stage, in the studio, and in the riding ring.

Your Questions—Answered What is the Academic Day? Day students are expected to be on campus by 7:45 AM and head home between 4:00–6:00 PM, depending on their schedule of activities. Students typically take five core academic classes, two electives, and participate in one to three hours of activities each day. During the day, students have the opportunity to seek out one-on-one help with teachers, attend club meetings, and/or get a jumpstart on homework. What are the Homework Expectations? Academics at Grier are demanding, and students should expect to have meaningful homework each night. Younger students can anticipate one to two hours of daily homework, while older students—especially those taking honors and AP courses—will require more time. All students are encouraged to use free periods to work on assignments. Honors and AP courses often require additional work throughout the year as well as during vacations and the summer months to prepare students for the AP exams and the next level of academics.

Where Do Students Hang Out? Though day students cannot spend the night on campus, the designated student lounge areas in the school’s dormitory and cottage facilities have lockers and areas for study and relaxation. Additionally, all common areas on campus (the library, dining hall, lounges, athletic facilities, and outdoor spaces) are available for use by all students—fostering friendships and community among students and faculty alike. What Happens on the Weekends? Weekend life is a busy life at Grier. Day students are encouraged to participate in local trips to area shopping centers, movies, and/or dinners, and often meet their friends at the destination, rather than driving to Grier to get on a bus. For bigger trips (like a Broadway show in New York or a social event with boys at The Kiski School), day students must sign-up in advance and be dropped off and picked up at campus. Day students are welcome to invite boarding students home for the weekend. Both students’ parents/guardians must give permission to the Head of School before arrangements can be finalized.

What are Non-Academic Days and What about Snow Days? Periodically Grier will schedule non-academic days which are still required school days. While regular classes may be replaced with other events (like speakers and performances), both boarding and day students are required to attend. If Grier is in session, students are required to be at school. In the event of inclement weather, families may need to make alternate arrangements if the local school system buses are subject to district delays, cancellations, or early dismissal. Can Family and Friends Attend Sporting Events and Performances? Absolutely! We invite all families to be part of our community. The girls love to have an audience, and new faces are always welcome.
