Design Grenadine owes the design of this collection of foutas, the choice of colors and the graphics, to Faiza Ennaceur, a Tunisian designer and the 2001 winner of the Khomsa D’or prize, which is awarded to the best Tunisian designers for their talent in renewing traditional dress. Already known through her Tirâz brand and her wide ranging craft-based know-how in both the making of household linens and the manufacturing of caftans, Faiza Ennaceur has succeeded in a sector in constant search of innovation, and, to the great benefit of Grenadine, in effectively pulling out all the new possibilities that the fouta offered her this time, to simultaneously modernize it and enrich it with a broad spectrum of lovely colors. It’s chic, it’s trendy, and it’s pretty!

The Grenadine Project and the Team Grenadine is a young brand that has taken on the task of sublimating traditional know-how in order to create design accessories that stay with you in your moments of relaxation, in your travels, on a beach, or on a boat. Though of Arabic origin, ever since the 18th century the word fouta has been used in the entire Mediterranean region to designate a supple, light cotton or linen fabric. Versatile and of different shapes, the fouta can be, in turn, a silk ceremonial costume embroidered with gold or silver and worn by women, bed sheets, a picnic blanket, a table runner, a bedspread, bath towels, a sarong, or a beach towel large enough to stretch out on and light enough to be folded up and stuffed into a handbag. The term fouta was given by a Moroccan desert tribe, so it seems, to a piece of faille fabric, either plain or striped, that was a type of loincloth and was worn knotted around the waist. The combination of contrasting stripes and the knot gave the fouta a doubly symbolic expression, for it allows the person’s body to be decently clothed while preserving complete freedom of movement. A seductive garment, it extends the interplay between the concealed and the revealed, the art of showing and suggesting. Light, of cotton or linen, absorbent, often striped, above all the fouta remains the towel that men wear in the Turkish bath, the hammam recommended unanimously for its hygienic, relaxing, and therapeutic benefits. The sign of a healthy, clean body, it eliminates the sweat of exertion and the dust of the streets. It dispels the humours of the human body and the pollution of urban activity. It’s where everyone’s body is renewed and the skin is refurbished. Here too the fabric of the fouta proves to be the best choice, for the more you wash it, the softer and the more absorbent it becomes.
