Kundalini in Sanskrit literally means 'uncoiled'. In yoga, a corporeal, instinctive or libidinal force or energy (prana) is believed to be lying dormant as a sleeping serpent coiled at the base of the spine. A set of advanced yoga exercises (kriyas) under the Kundalini yoga discipline, proposes to liberate, awaken or uncoil our latent creative energy. A scheduled practice of this set of exercises will enhance vitality, prevent back aches, decrease stress and maintain youthfulness by improving spine suppleness. New levels of joy, knowledge and love in their purest form will be reached. Kundalini is a spiritual type of yoga. It is more than the mere physical performance of poses. Contemplation accompanied by controlled breathing and the sound of the mantra 'Sat Nam' (truth is my identity) act as the key resources of Kundalini yoga. A practicing school believes in using 'Breath of Fire', in which constant, rapid exhalation and inhalation through the nose pumps up the naval point while the abdomen is used as a bellows. An elevated consciousness is achieved with this activity as the rhythm of breathing along with the chant of 'Sat Nam' prevents the mind from chattering idly. This rigorous and physically intense yogic activity consists of quick, successive breathing movements or of holding a pose while breathing in a particular way that is why the routine is appreciated only by those who are ready to accept challenges of the body and the mind.
