Learning how to build a website is not as easy as it seems. Not only are there tons of technical issues, which range from getting it to work in an optimized way for every major browser to bringing down the loading time as much as possible, but there are also other, less known problems, that you have to take care of. Today, I'm going to examine some of the issues anybody setting up a website should bear in mind. When learning how to build a website, first of all you need to know what keywords you are going to target. Make pages to cater for each of these that combine useful content and a visible space where your user can either make a purchase, fill in a lead form or click on an advertisement. You may ask if the useful content can only be text, or you can also include images, Flash and video. I would start by saying that Flash is not a good idea: it takes too long to load and Google can't recognize it as anything. This means that when Googlebot is going through your website, it just "sees" a blank spot. No use to you or to Google. Both images and video, on the other hand, can be SEO optimized. However, take into account that they take longer to load than a text and are less valuable to search engines, so use them sparingly. Next, go for a URL that is useful to you and also to search engines. What does a useful URL look like? After your domain name, you should have something that looks like this: /finding-the-bestinsurance. You are giving search engines information on what the site is about. On the other hand, a URL that looks like this: /pgid=36573939687 means nothing to you and it means nothing to Google. URL fail! Also, page titles which target the page's keywords will also help you. Putting a lot of spaces in front or silly characters such as --- or &&& does not help at all. Next, when learning how to build a website remember that the longer a visitor stays on your site, the better it will look to Google and the more chances you have of them making a purchase. Therefore, make your texts short and to the point, use a nice font on a white surface (no red on black) and don't build websites where you constantly have to be scrolling down to find more information. Also, avoid adding animated gif images, they really break your concentration if you are trying to do something else (such as making a purchase) and they don't look too professional. the perfect look is the Google home page: a logo and a search bar which lets you do what you need: no unnecessary crap to sidetrack you. There are a few exceptions to these rules of learning how to build a website in very niche markets, but in general you will be safe following them.
