LIAM’S NEW GIRLFRIEND MEETS THE PARENTS! iam Hemsworth’s estranged wife Miley Cyrus famously never saw eye to eye with his mum Leonie – but his new girlfriend appears to be having no such trouble. Our exclusive pictures show Sydney-based model Gabriella Brooks, 21, getting along famously with the schoolteacher from Philip Island and her hubby Craig, as they were introduced over lunch in Byron Bay last week. Liam, who had just returned to Australia after wrapping a film project in Canada, looked relaxed and happy as he greeted Leonie with a hug before making way for his special guest.

L

“They had a lovely lunch. It looks like the first meeting went really well,” a source tells us. “Liam’s a local here and he’s been pretty moody since he split from Miley – but he’s like a new bloke. He was really happy and chilled, and very obviously into his new girlfriend.” It’s believed 29-year-old Liam – who is about to begin divorce proceedings with Miley – met Gabriella in recent months, soon after a fling with US-based Aussie actress Maddison Brown. It’s unclear how they met, though Gabriella has visited LA, where Liam lives, and Byron, where he regularly holidays with his family, in the past three months.

ANGELINA ‘STOLE IDEAS’ FROM DEAF WOMAN!

ngelina Jolie is being accused of ripping off a movie idea from the deaf woman she once employed to teach her children sign language. Antoinette Abbamonte told the Daily Mail last week that Angelina, 44, took her suggestion of creating a deaf superhero for her upcoming Marvel film The Eternals. “I asked Angelina straight up, ‘How did this happen?’” says Antoinette,

She treated me like a second class citizen… she just wrote me off.” Antoinette’s lawyers have sent a letter to Angelina claiming intellectual property theft, and demanding Disney and Marvel compensate their client for what they insist was her idea.

“Justin is grovelling but Jessica isn’t ready to forgive him,” a source tells Woman’s Day. “She went to visit and stayed just long enough to lay out how much his selfish behaviour has humiliated her and messed up their future. “As of now, they’re at a stalemate, but she’s making a huge statement by swapping her diamonds for a plain wedding band. Justin’s gotten away with a lot in their seven years of marriage, but Jess finally seems ready to stick up for herself.”

Royal news

The last thing the royals need is another secret resurfacing!

ROYAL LOVE CHILD OUT OF HIDING!

Yet another scandal is threatening to bring down the royal family – and it’s left Prince Charles reeling Charles has been plagued by love child rumours, dating back to when his sons were first born.

J

ust when Prince Charles thought things couldn’t get any worse, yet another shameful scandal is causing major upset at the palace. New photographs of New Zealand-based vet Felicity Tonkin Wade – the love child of Princess Anne’s former husband Captain Mark Phillips and art teacher/model Heather Tonkin – have emerged and are threatening to open old wounds once again. “As the scandal over Charles’ brother Prince Andrew was starting to lessen, Felicity has been thrust into the spotlight and it’s turning into another PR nightmare for the future king,” one palace aide tells Woman’s Day.

ROYAL FAMILY SHAME According to our source, Felicity’s birth – the product of a one-night stand between married Mark Phillips and her model mother in 1984 – is not only a royal scandal Charles would rather forget, but also a reminder that he himself has been the subject of a number of love child rumours over the years. Felicity’s name was at the forefront during Prince Charles and Camilla’s recent visit to New Zealand, but Charles, 71, shut down any suggestion of meeting her. “The story heaped shame on the royal family, they just don’t want to get involved and that’s probably the way it will stay forever,” reveals a palace insider. As our exclusive pictures show, horse-mad vet Felicity, who shares the same blonde hair 12 WD

and blue eyes as her half-sister Zara, lives an outdoorsy life, with her polo playing British husband Tristan Wade and their two-yearold son James. And just like Zara and her father Mark, Felicity’s life centres around animals, with her pouring her money into the 10-acre property and the string of horses she owns with Tristan, who she married in 2015.

CHILD SUPPORT More than 30 years ago, Princess Anne’s husband fathered a secret love child in an Auckland hotel with Heather, who he met while still married to Anne. Infamously, he left his riding boots outside the door to help her find his room. But when Heather found out she was pregnant, Mark tried to convince her to have an abortion, before secretly paying her $12,000 a year in child support but not wanting to meet the baby. When he stopped paying it, Heather

took him to court for a DNA test to prove he was the father. “I’m doing what I’m doing for my child. I hope and pray Mark will do the right thing and make a proper and legally binding settlement on her,” Heather said at the time. She had told her daughter her father was dead. It wasn’t until Felicity was eight she learned who her father was after putting together a family tree for a school project. Mark and his family have never met heartbroken Felicity. “Zara has never been in touch with her – nobody has,” Felicity’s grandmother said in 2011. As a youngster, Felicity kept a book about Mark by her bed and spent hours devouring articles about her British “family”. “She’d have liked a card or something, some sort of recognition,” Heather’s former boyfriend Jason Fowell has said. “I saw her cry about it.” In a strange twist, Felicity’s husband Tristan has played at the Royal Windsor Cup in front of the Queen and Prince Philip, but Mark Phillips, 70, still refuses to acknowledge his role. “It’s likely Mark will go to his deathbed before he lays eyes on his daughter,” adds a royal source. “And you can bet none of the other royals – especially Charles – will have anything to do with her either!”

Plenty of tears, but no joy

Charlene was visibly upset during her nuptials with Albert.

RUNAWAY BRIDE Albert’s reunion with his baby mama is the final straw for sad Charlene

P

rince Albert of Monaco often appears stunned when the world’s media suggests his marriage to Princess Charlene isn’t a happy one. It doesn’t, however, seem to stop him making questionable decisions like hanging out with his former girlfriend and baby mama while his wife of eight years is across the other side of Europe with their five-yearold twins. Albert, 61, was snapped with his arm around his ex Nicole Coste – the mother of his illegitimate son Alexandre – at her 50th birthday party in London last week.

LOVE CHILDREN

Lothario Albert has two love children – 16-year-old Alex and 27-year-old Jazmin Grace Grimaldi, the latter from his

Albert’s daughter Jazmin Grace Grimaldi – whose shares the same name as his mother Princess Grace – might not be heir to the throne despite being his firstborn, but she’s still carving out a high-profile life of her own in New York. The 27-year-old, who describes herself as an actress and singer, is in a long-term relationship with John Mellencamp’s musician nephew Ian. The couple released holiday song Thankful together last week. “Despite it all, Jazmin is still very close with her father, who treats her well,” says a source. “She wants for nothing and is often a guest at the palace in Monaco.”

relationship with US estate agent Tamara Rotolo. The kids have no claim to the Monegasque throne since they were born out of wedlock, with Albert later marrying

Zimbabwean swimmer Charlene Wittstock, who gave birth to Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella in 2014. The pair had an infamously fraught start to their union, with Charlene, 41, reportedly attempting Albert with his to escape Monaco ex Nicole (left) before being stopped and millionairess at the airport and Lisa Tchenguiz. having her passport confiscated. She was visibly distraught during the ceremony, and rumoured to have stayed in a separate hotel during their honeymoon. Now there are fresh fears among royal sources and friends alike that Charlene may once more be planning an escape, after being betrayed by her husband again.

HUMILIATION Sources say Albert’s appearance at flight attendant Nicole’s birthday as the guest of honour is “like a kick in the teeth for Charlene”.

“Since marrying Albert her life has been filled with humiliation,” says a source. “What kind of husband goes to an ex’s birthday celebration and then poses for a cosy photo with her?” It’s believed Charlene was holidaying in Corsica while Albert was with Nicole.

GETTING AWAY WITH IT

“Albert continues to make a mockery of their marriage, but he doesn’t care,” says a source. “He was born into one of the wealthiest families in the world and truly believes he can get away with anything. The code of human decency doesn’t seem to apply to him.

‘The code of human decency doesn’t seem to apply to him’ “Charlene has always just ignored his bad behaviour outwardly, though there’s no denying it breaks her heart. She’s always just focused on enjoying the spoils of his bank account, and raising the future king of Monaco to be a better man than his father – but it really seems like she’s had about all she can take. This time Albert has gone too far.” WD 23

FOR HER I

Four years after the loss of her husba d, there is concern for Celine Dion

f Celine Dion’s closest friends pictured a worst-case scenario for the singer after her husband Rene Angelil passed away, this must be it. Woman’s Day has learned that four years after Rene’s death from throat cancer, the Canadian singer is struggling to keep afloat and is making poor decisions, both in her music and in her private life. At 51, the mum-of-three has been partying until all hours with her back-up dancer Pepe Munoz – who sources say, calls himself her best friend, closest confidant, creative director and unofficial life coach. “If Celine’s had a big night, you can guarantee Pepe isn’t far away. The argument from him is that she never really had a youth because she’s been famous her whole life, and it’s time she enjoyed herself ,” says a source.

OFF THE CHARTS

The culmination of Celine’s downfall is said to have hit a low earlier this month, when her latest album debuted at number one before plummeting out of the top 100 within a week – a record. “She’s upset. All hell has broken loose,” a source says of the moment she found out. 28 WD

“Without Rene around, no one knows what she’s doing,” another source says. “She’s spending all her time with a person who has told her Rene was an old guy and she should live like she’s in her 20s. That’s her state of mind.”

LOSING WEIGHT

Making matters worse for Celine is her weight, which continues to fall from her thin frame. “She has no interest in eating,” says one friend. “The problem is, she never had much meat on her bones to begin with. Pepe’s putting her in all these ridiculous and bombastic outfits in, I guess, an attempt to hide how thin she is, but it’s not working. “There are huge fears for her wellbeing but she won’t be told – she’s giving interviews insisting Pepe is her best friend and she’s living her best life now.”

SOULMATES

Celine, the youngest child of 14, met music producer Rene, her husband of 22 years, when she was 12 and he was 38, after her parents sent him a video of her singing. He began representing her as her agent, and when she

was 18, love bl ssomed and they bega dating. They married n 1994, 26, when Celine and later welcomed son Rene-Ch les, n 18, and twins Eddy and Nelson, ne. Rene died January 14, 2 6 after a long b ttle with throat c ncer. “Rene-Ch les has been the man of the house nc his dad died and he’s old enough to know that something not right wi his mum,” ssays our source. Friends concerned r th singer mo than ever, given that n January 14 it will be the fourth anniversary of Rene’s eath.

WASTING AWAY She appears to be getting thinner and thinner.

Attention seeking outfits

CELINE’S SAD DECLINE The singer cut a muc e er figure with Rene (below) in 2006 at a charity concert, but since his death she’s suffered a slow decline. Losing weight at a rate of knots, Celine’s attention-grabbing outfits have done little to deflect from her thin frame. Chart falls and partying (with Pepe, above) seem to be her new normal.

ayne Mott admits he gets emotional at big events, but celebrating his 50th birthday with family and friends, including his partner Tom Walsh, gave him the greatest, weepiest gift of all. Painting the town pink at a glitzy party, the long-time pair revealed joyful plans to splurge on their 20th anniversary by getting married next year. Wayne

sobbed as guests cheered. Then the eldest of their three children, daughter Jade, 30, went one better by breaking the news she and her partner are going through the process to adopt a child as soon as possible. “Sorry, I’m trying to compose myself,” says Wayne, wiping his eyes as he recalls the moment. “To be told that on my birthday was one of the best presents

I could have been given.” For Gogglebox fans it’s no secret that Wayne was adopted and later helped raise Tom’s kids Jade, Zac, 28, and Tegan, 25, wholeheartedly as his own. “He always told our kids there are so many children out there in need of love,” says 51-year-old Tom, now a breakfast presenter on Melbourne’s LGBTI radio network JOY 94.9FM. “So when

Jade said she wanted to give somebody else the love Wayne brought to us, I was never more proud. Sh*t they’re good kids!”

It’s something I will never forget!” An exciting future beckons for Tom and Wayne, who quit Gogglebox at the end of 2018. They have a wedding to plan, and they’re also determined to live their dream of moving to a farm in Tasmania. “We spoke about that on the show and that’s another goal for 2020, especially knowing that we have grandkids coming,” says Wayne. “We want somewhere the family can come and be kids again – run around in paddocks, eat worms, get eggs straight off our chickens. That will be amazing.” and shots of peppermint schnapps on arrival, the event was sure to go off with a bang. Olivia and John still have a close friendship today.

YOU’RE STILL THE ONE THAT I WANT!

Our favourite entertainers Olivia and John have reunited 41 years later – and they’re more in love than ever!

Olivia calls John a “wonderful human being”.

Grease reunion!

hey gave us chills that were multiplying as Sandy and Danny in the hit film Grease in 1978 and 41 years later, Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta’s chemistry is just as electrifying! The beloved entertainers looked every bit as enamoured with each other as they did back then, sharing a kiss and holding hands for the adoring crowds as they donned their costumes to reunite for a “Meet n’ Grease” movie singalong in Florida last week.

T

IN THE BEGINNING

John, 65, and Olivia’s love story began when John, then 23, begged casting executives to take a chance on Olivia, by giving her the role of Sandy Olsson, who would fall head over heels for Rydell High’s resident jock, Danny Zuko. John was so infatuated with Olivia, he made scriptwriters write the character around her – making Sandy an Australian expat to accommodate Olivia’s strong accent. “If you were a young man in the ’70s, if you remember that album cover of Olivia with that

blue shirt on, wiith those big blue eyes staring right r at you, every boy’s, every maan’s dream was, ‘Oh, I’d love for that girl to be my girlfriend ’” John, who has been married to Kelly Preston for 28 years, told media at the time. “So when I had the privilege to have input on the casting, I said, ‘There’s no other person in the universe than Olivia NewtonJohn to play Sandy. You must cast her.’ So I held tight, didn’t I, and I got my way!” he continued.

‘There’s no other person in the universe to play Sandy!’ And while Olivia, 71, who has been married twice since the movie, has been quick to state that the pair were never lovers, she did acknowledge that there was a certain “tension” between them that allowed for their sizzling on-screen chemistry. “We were both with other people when we were filming and I think, respectfully, it just didn’t happen. I think it was good, because it kept the tension there and the chemistry,” she said years later. Decades on, another hit film and a Christmas album later, the duo are still as close as ever. And

while Grease fans rally for the pair to reunite every year, Olivvia or and John’s love and support fo one another means the film is still magical to watch today.

MUTUAL ADMIRATION

During one of her appearancees with her co-star at the film’s 20th anniversary, Olivia said she’s always thankful for “darling” John. “Every time I see him it’ss like no time has gone by. We just have a connection, he’s a wonderful human being.” And John gushed about Olivia at the Fanatic premiere last week, where he praised her youthful appearance and strength amid her cancer battle. “I’m very happy about Olivia,” he said. “She looks incredible. She doesn’t look any different than she did years ago, and I’m very proud of her,” he added.

The pair held hands as they treated fans to a trip down memory lane.

H

er courage is unquestionable but fire captain Beth Raines paid an awful price for her selfless action in fighting a mega-blaze, after her family home was gutted in the terrifying inferno engulfing the NSW Blue Mountains. “She’s a special person,” says neighbour and Beth’s deputy fire captain Barry Freeman. He was trying to keep the flames from reaching his own home when Beth’s two-storey house near Mount Wilson caught alight and was burned to the ground in minutes – along with 15 homes in nearby Bilpin and Mount Tomah. An emotional Barry praised his fire captain for her extraordinary dedication in the face of such a soul-destroying loss, revealing that Beth 36 WD

‘AMAZING TEAM’

Beth is just one of an increasing number of Aussie women who are fighting fires shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts as bushfires continue to ravage NSW, Queensland, WA, SA, NT, Tasmania and Victoria. The biggest of them all is the Gospers Mountain fire in the Wollemi National Park, which robbed Beth of her home. Despite the brave efforts of our volunteer firefighters, it has burned through 380,000 hectares since October. NSW Rural Fire Service volunteer Tanya Willey, 45, says there’s a moment every

time when her emergency pager goes off that she shudders, fearing this could be the day she won’t make it home. And Tanya’s had a lot of those days this year. “I can’t think of anything more rewarding than being a part of this amazing team of special people who risk their own lives to help others,” says the brave mum-of-three and deputy fire captain from Eglinton, near Bathurst. “That underlying fear is real. “I love that I can bring empathy and compassion to so many heartbreaking situations,” she says. Professional firefighter Bec Colling, 27, says it’s the unpredictable nature of this year’s seemingly relentless fires that have put both the volunteers and the Fire and Rescue firefighters under so much pressure.

UNPREDICTABLE

“It’s an honour to wear the Fire and Rescue NSW uniform and to be on the frontline, especially during these

unprecedented times,” she says, explaining she’s been deployed to the Wollondilly district in the current crisis. “It has been horrendous, but nothing like it is for those poor people who face losing everything they have. We’ve been sent to the frontline on and off since this started. “There’s not one really bad day. It’s the unpredictable that’s the nightmare. We were sent out at night patrolling, making sure residents were safe and their homes weren’t a target for flying embers and jumping flames.

“The worst is when the fires jump and the embers become your enemy. That and the wind changing direction means the situation on the ground is changing every five minutes. “The fight is relentless. The adrenaline kicks in and you just get it done. Sure, you get battleweary, but when you walk back through your front gate, home to your family... everything is suddenly OK.

MONEY MANTRAS

CommBank’s Sian Lewis shares seven money formulas to help keep your finances in shape. Out of sight out of mind

Whether you’re a ‘good’ saver or not, putting money aside every week or month is a proven formula for savings success. Consider setting up an account that’s not easy to access if you find it tempting to dip into your savings.

Knowledge is power You don’t have to be a financial whiz to be in good financial shape. Recent research from CommBank and the University of Melbourne, the Financial Wellbeing Scales, looked at the state of Australians’ financial wellbeing. The results showed that even a basic knowledge base can equate to higher financial wellbeing. Building your knowledge base when it comes to money matters is one of the best investments you can make. If you want to learn more about your financial wellbeing, visit commbank.com.au/digital/ fwbscore and take our financial wellbeing quiz.

Kicking goals Whether you’re saving for a holiday, kids’ school fees or something new for your house, it’s important to name your goal. Research shows that naming your goal, sharing your goal with others, setting steps and tracking your progress is one of the best ways to keep motivated and see your goals come to fruition. It has actually been shown to be more productive (and rewarding) than just ‘doing your best’.

Little things count Taking a regular health check of your savings accounts, credit cards, mortgages and insurances is a good way to keep across some of your biggest areas of spending. Diarise when things are due for renewal and give yourself plenty of time to shop around before renewals are due. If you leave your run too late, you won’t have enough time to do your research. One of the best ways to improve your financial wellbeing is finding small changes that can lead to substantial improvements.

Mind over matter Not really a budget spreadsheet person? The good news is that setting a budget in your head can be as effective as a physical budget. It doesn’t matter if the budget is a ‘mental’ one or a ‘formal’ one: either type is equally associated with higher financial wellbeing. Just find a method that works for you.

“The good news is that setting a budget in your head can be as effective as a physical budget; either type is equally associated with higher financial wellbeing.” BE PREPARED Having some money set aside for a rainy day is always a good idea. While we don’t like to think an unexpected illness, loss of job or change in relationship is going to affect us, if it does, a ‘rainy day’ plan can help get us through those tough days. “Unfortunately, many of us wrongly assume these things won’t happen to us and as such, we don’t financially prepare for these ‘what if’ scenarios,” says CommBank Group Executive, Sian Lewis. “Where possible, it’s important to build an emergency fund, otherwise known as a financial buffer. A rule of thumb often cited is to have an amount available equal to at least three months’ worth of expenses, but you should consider your own personal circumstances.”

Money talks Being able to talk about money is crucial in any relationship, even if you are not always on the same page. While there is no one right way to manage your money when you’re part of a couple, being able to discuss finances is necessary and important. It’s equally important to recognise when a healthy financial relationship might be deteriorating into something more sinister. This is known as financial abuse. Despite its prevalence, financial abuse can be difficult to recognise. You can find out more at commbank.com.au/financialabuse.

Chloe, who insists she had an “easy” pregnancy, after some nausea in the first trimester, spent the last month of her pregnancy in hospital because of health concerns about the triplets, who were delivered eight weeks premature and spent their first six weeks in hospital. The couple “I didn’t get to hold them found out until the second night, so it they were having was all a bit surreal,” she triplets! says, adding the triplets left hospital in perfect health.

AYNE J H A LIL , 1.55kg kg 2 40cm 41cm, 1.8 E RAI AN JYE E D O K LOG , 1.57kg m 41.4c

EALED RT The triplets have brought more joy into the couple’s lives than they could ever have imagined. The babies came as a total surprise to Chloe and “a complete shock” to Daniel – the couple were still recovering from a miscarriage in January when they found out they’d fallen pregnant two months later – with triplets!

‘Mum would have been a great grandma’

GROWING UP FAST “We got to stay together but we had to grow up fairly quickly,” admits Daniel, who says his mum would have been a great grandma. “She loved kids and she always wanted a girl but got five boys instead, so we named our girl after Mum. “They’re the first babies in the family and my brothers are pretty stoked. It’s a great feeling being a dad – it’s pretty full-on but I love it.” WD 41

Words: Phillip Koch. Pictures: Phillip Castleton.

“Daniel didn’t really speak for a couple of days,” Chloe says, adding that he was overcome with worry about how they were going to afford three babies. “He was still pretty shocked when he went away on a trip to NSW, but he was good when he came back – and he’s the best dad,” she says. “He’s better at [parenting] than me! I get all worked up when they cry, but he just picks them up and soothes them. He’s a natural.”

Daniel and his brother Joshua, 30, had to help raise their younger brothers Matthew, 27, Jake, 25, and Anthony, 19, after their mum died in a head-on collision with a tourist driving on the wrong side of the road in 2011. The boys’ plight touched many in the community, who helped raise funds for them to stay together but it was businessman Dick Smith and his wife Pip who ultimately came to the rescue and paid off Jayne’s mortgage so the boys could stay together.

The latest reality TV show where three sets of complete strangers marry was a flop. None of the couples managed to stay together for a week after they wed. From the clues, can you tell the name of each couple, where they married and how long they were together? CLUES 1. Peter and Annie were the first couple to split. 2. Kelly’s marriage lasted the longest – not that it is saying much! 3. Chris didn’t get married in the vineyard. 4. Andy got married on the beach, and split four days later.

Each time you rule out a match, put a cross where the vertical and horizontal squares meet in the grid. When you find a match, put a tick in the grid. Also put a cross in the other two squares horizontally and vertically in the same line, as no other combinations can be true. By doing so, you’ll gradually be able to solve the puzzle.

1. No number is repeated in a horizontal row 2. Each number from 1 to 7 is represented in the seven coloured hexagon cells.

ADULT ACNE

Clearer skin is closer than you think tells dermal therapist and founder of The Dermal Diary ISABELLA LONERAGAN

What causes adult acne?

Is it acne or just

Acne for adults can be triggered in a number of ways but to put it simply, it’s caused by over-stimulated sebaceous glands combined with a blocked pore, which then creates a pimple. Hormonal imbalance is the number one cause of overstimulated sebaceous glands, though stress, some medications, reproductive issues, menopause and diet – especially dairy – can also play a large role. Using unsuitable products is also a huge ge problem. Those that contain pore-blocking and occlusive ingredients like mineral oil can acerbate the problem.

Acne is classified as continuous breakout over a period of time, presenting in the same themed area, for example around the chin. It’s a deeper-set problem that is constant and requires a different treatment solution to a general breakout or spot. A spot is usually in direct response to a fluctuation of oil in the skin, for example, hormonal changes around the time of menstruation.

Words: Aimee Bruce.

What are the treatments?

Adult acne treatment requires an in-depth skin analysis to determine the right clear-skin management plan that combines in-clinic treatments with prescribbed home care. Clients often want a “miracle wand”, but the situation is more complex than that. A range of factors come into play, like gut health, medications and lifestyle habits of the individual person. 56 WD

2

Retinol is often called the “Mr Fix It” for skin conditions and is highly effective on acne. It controls oil production and stimulates cell turnover to unclog the pores and help with scar minimisation. Look for products with salicylic acid, which has a gentle exfoliating effect. With acne, your skin’s barrier function is impaired, so it’s important to follow up with products that have a healing and h on the skin aas vitamin B and hyaluronic acid.

Cameron Diaz uses powdered milk as a gentle but effective exfoliant on her acne-prone skin.

I survived my teens relatively unscathed when it came to blemishes, so you can imagine my absolute anguish when I started getting horrible and very regular breakouts about two years ago. When I visited this place, I’d all but given up hope of help, having tried literally everything to improve my skin and with my scarring becoming more and more evident. But after three treatments with Isabella, my skin is clearer than it’s been in years. Aside from a very relaxing space, Isabella offers a scientific approach to treating acne, targeting the cause of the problem rather than providing a quick fix. She put me on a strict skincare plan, and while it’s far more involved than I was used to, her products are lovely.

ELECTRODE MUSCLE STIMULATION TRAINING Find out why celebs like Madonna, Heidi Klum and Elizabeth Hurley get a buzz (literally!) from this new exercise trend

hat would you say if you could get the benefits of a 90-minute training session in just 20 minutes? It sounds too good to be true, but it’s the new reality in the exercise world, thanks to electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) training.

W

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Damien Bain of Sydney-based studio 20PerFit explains EMS “imitates the natural action of the central nervous system, sending electrical impulses to contract deep muscle fibres”. Essentially, it stimulates up to 90 per cent of your muscle fibres, which helps build muscle faster than traditional workouts. The more muscle you have, the higher your metabolic rate while training and at rest, which burns fat. To get the benefits, you wear what looks like a wetsuit while you train, which has electrode pads that target main muscle groups, such as your back, abs, glutes, quads, chest and arms. Unlike other EMS studios that require you to put on the suit wet (to encourage the power of the electrodes) and connect wires from it to a machine, 20PerFit provides a dry, 100 per cent wireless suit.

DOES EMS HURT?

Rest assured, exercising while being buzzed by electrodes comes with zero pain. In fact,

Rita Ora sings the praises of celeb EMS trainer Mohamed Elzomor!

it’s gentle and safe on joints, and has a low risk of injury. “It starts as more of a ticklish feeling and then feels like a muscle contraction,” says Damien. “The intensity can be controlled on each single part of the suit by the trainer upon the client’s request.”

HOW WILL I FEEL AFTERWARDS?

Like with other workouts, you may experience mus soreness or delayed onse muscle soreness (DOMS) to 48 hours later. “To com that, make sure you stretc and drink lots of water,” says Damien. Because of the power of the suit itself, the workout is mainly simple bodyweight

Mohamed also counts model Romee Strijd as an EMS convert.

exercises like squats, lunges, push-ups and crunches. Of course your EMS trainer will personalise the workout to your needs. “[You’ll need a] 20 minute workout, twice a week,” says

sessions for muscle recovery.” Sessions are $75-$90 each depending on the provider. There are some cases where medical clearance may be required, and you can’t take part if you’re pregnant.

SAY YES TO SAYING NO! Social worker JESSICA SANDERS gives naysaying the nod

e’ve all experienced that feeling of anxiety when we say yes to something – whether it be dinner with girlfriends or a favour for a friend or family member – that we really wish we’d said no to. We put our own feelings and needs aside in order to be there for somebody else, which may be selfless and kind, but it’s time to start saying no (within reason of course!). Author, social worker and “say no” advocate Jessica Sanders explains why we need to start rejecting invitations from others and start accepting them from ourselves.

W

WHY SAY NO?

Jessica believes women have been socialised to please others and put everyone else’s needs before their own – whether that be as a mother, partner, sibling or friend. “I believe, we as women, need to be much more comfortable with saying ‘no’ and prioritising our own needs,” she says. “Too often, women burn out by over-committing in an endless pursuit to please everyone and try to ‘do it all’. Saying ‘no’ to non-essential commitments allows us to 60 WD

prioritise what is most important to us, such as time spent with family.”

WHAT TO SAY NO TO

You might be wondering what Jessica means when she talks about “non-essential commitments”. She explains they’re different for everyone. “In order to establish what those things might be, write two lists: one with the heading ‘Needs’ and the other with the heading ‘Values’,” says Jessica. “Under these headings write a maximum of three things. If an activity or task comes up that doesn’t slot into any of those items on your lists, then it’s a non-essential and you can say ‘no’.”

GETTING RID OF GUILT

Of course it can be difficult to go from saying yes to everything, to saying no. You may feel guilty – but there’s no need to when it’s for the right reasons. “In our culture, we seem to idealise selflessness in women and I take issue with that,” says Jessica. “Being selfless requires sacrificing our sense of self and defining

ourselves by what we do for others as opposed to who we intrinsically are. It’s really important to make time for the things that make you, you.” In order to change your mindset and ditch the guilt hangover, Jessica suggests asking yourself the below question: Do I want my children or close friends to prioritise their mental health and wellbeing? I’m sure you do. So why wouldn’t you want the same for yourself?

RESPONDING TO ANY NEGATIVITY

No guilt here! Busy Reese Witherspoon knows the benefits of not being a ‘yes’ woman.

It may be that a certain person or group in your life gets offended by you saying no. It’s important to remember you’re just doing what’s best for you – and you can help them understand that. “Saying ‘no’ is essentially setting a boundary,” says Jessica. “When we set boundaries with others, it’s usually met with resistance.

Reassure this person about what they mean to you. It’s also very important to be transparent about why you are saying ‘no’ and be consistent in your approach. Over time, the other person will reset their expectations of your relationship.”

Live like the Swedes!

SSTEPHANIE TEPHA ANIEE CONLEY CONLEY Y andd ANNA-CARIN McNAMARA explain why they’re the happiest in the world! CATCH-UP OVER COFFEE

“The Swedes love their fika, which is the name given to the Swedish coffee break,” says Stephanie of The Hostess blog, who has adopted her hubby’s Swedish lifestyle. “It’s a daily ritual at home and in the work place. It is very much a part of the Swedish lifestyle as it allows you to catch up with friends, connect and take time out.”

POINT OF NO RETURN

of what you need and value, and prioritising those things above the stuff that is less Is there a point where you can important. I think my favourite say ‘no’ too much? quote by [author] Paulo Coehlo “Obviously, we need to say sums it up really well: “When ‘yes’ to lots of things we would you say ‘yes’ to others, make rather say ‘no’ to,” says Jessica. sure you are not saying ‘no’ “It’s about reminding yourself to yourself.’”

“Most Swedes have a strong relationship to saunas because they would have used them often when they were young children,” says Swedish-born interior designer Anna-Carin. “There are definitely both physical and emotional benefits to the sauna. They are not only great for circulation, the immune system and for the skin, but are a great excuse to socialise and connect with others. If you have a sauna in the home, you would enjoy [it] as a family.”

FOOD + FAMILY

“The Swedish lifestyle is very family orientated,” says Stephanie. “My favourite time to enjoy food with my family is during a hot coal BBQ in summer.” For whipping up other delicious meals, she and Anna-Carin recommend the no-fuss Electrolux multifunction steam and pyrolytic oven, which cleans itself (electrolux.com.au), letting you spend more time with your family and less time cleaning! SEP 24 – OCT 23

This week’s eclipse could set your mind (and body!) racing, so to save your sanity, make checklists and opt for simplicity. Conversations may get you excited, but remember, the best brews take time to percolate. Dust off the juicer on Saturday and give your system a spring clean.

It’s not only your calendar that’s bursting at the seams, but quite possibly your home as well, with guests (both invited and unexpected) drawn to your hospitality. A generous gift or offer might leave you flabbergasted… along with a quirky new person on the singles scene.

APR 21 – MAY 21

OCT 24 – NOV 22

As frustrations fade in work and family, visions of the future should become much clearer. Some Bulls might even catch a glimpse of a new career path. Adding to the upbeat vibe, a difficult person might improve almost overnight. Couples, a change of scenery could reignite the romance.

The festive flurry may be increasing, but make time for fun. Parties and events could exceed expectations, and could set the scene for romance. December’s energetic patterns might propel you out of town, so keep your fuel tank filled, and remember, the more the merrier!

MAY 22 – JUN 21

Fresh starts await, but first, it’s “out with the old”. A desire to declutter your life could become an obsession through summer. As a bonus, cupboard clear-outs might boost your bank balance. Ironically, as you begin to offload surplus items, a generous gift or inheritance could take you by surprise.

NOV 23 – DEC 22

Your touch looks golden, so let yourself dream. Plans devised during summer could prove lucrative, for you and for a cause close to your heart. Under the midweek eclipse, a cash windfall might even materialise – just don’t get carried away by Boxing Day sales. Sunday looks far more sensible! WD 79

RRUSSIAN USSIAN DOLL This eight-episode comedy series follows a young woman named Nadia (Orange Is The New Black’s Natasha Lyonne, who also co-created the show) who keeps dying and reliving her 36th birthday party. It will have you laughing and pondering your existence at the same time!

THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY On the same day in 1989, 43 infants are born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by billionaire industrialist Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world. A must-watch for superhero fans.

BLACK MIRROR This captivating series got the whole world talking thanks to its unnerving insight into the modern world. Each standalone episode is a sharp, suspenseful tale exploring themes of contemporary tech anxiety. Season five, which premiered this year with just three episodes, has a surprising star turn from Miley Cyrus.

CARNIVAL ROW

HOMECOMING

Arguably the biggest breakout show to come from Amazon in 2019, Carnival Row’s epic scope and dark fantasy themes earned it the title of the next big thing since Game Of Thrones. It follows Rycroft “Philo” Philostrate (Orlando Bloom), an inspector who is sent to investigate a dark conspiracy. He is reunited with fairy Vignette (Cara Delevingne) and reignites a passionate, yet dangerous love affair.

Heidi (Julia Roberts) works as a caseworker at Homecoming, a facility that helps struggling soldiers transition back into civilian life. She suddenly quits and moves back to her home town. Years later, the Department of Defense comes knocking on her door, questioning why she left, which slowly unravels a dark and twisted plot that Heidi has been hiding deep inside her. Gritty, clever and refreshingly original.

2019 ENCORE! From executive producer Kristen Bell comes an exciting and refreshingly new reality series that’s centred around a group of castmates who are all tasked to recreate the musical they had performed in high school. Emotions run high as the former students face faded friendships, former flames, self-doubt and killer choreography.

THE POLITICIAN

Editor’s pick!

Pitch Perfect star Ben Platt stars as Payton Hobart, a wealthy Californian student who believes he’s destined to be president of the United States. But first he must navigate the most treacherous political landscape of all: Saint Sebastian High School. Created by Ryan Murphy, Ben leads an all-star cast, including Gwyneth Paltrow and Jessica Lange, in what is one of the year’s quirkiest and hilarious new series.

LADY AND THE TRAMP Perhaps the biggest drawcard to the Disney+ platform is this retelling of the 1955 animated classic Lady And The Tramp. In this groundbreaking film, which combines live action with photorealistic animation, we follow much-loved pampered pooch Lady and tough but lovable stray Tramp as they embark on an unexpected adventure. One for the entire family!

JACK RYAN Based on the successful novels, CIA analyst Jack Ryan (John Krasinski) is plucked from his security desk job and into the field after discovering a string of dubious bank transfers from a rising Islamic extremist group called Suleiman. In the recently released second season, Jack is thrust into the middle of political warfare in a fictionalised corrupt Venezuela that’s suffering an economic meltdown.

THE MANDALORIAN

This explosive series, set in the Star Wars universe, picks up after the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, when another warrior emerges. After the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order, The Mandalorian follows the adventures of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic. G N I M A E R T S F O T S E B E H T TTHE HE RIGHTEOUS GEMSTONES

Eastbound & Down’s Danny McBride once again plays a frustrated and unsuccessful man – Jesse Gemstone, the oldest of three siblings in a family, led by patriarch Eli (the wonderful John Goodman), that has turned preaching and praying into big business. Expect lots of laughs.

THE BOLD TYPE

Editor’s pick!

This glossy, fast-paced and entertaining series isn’t exactly new, but it’s the socially aware, heartfelt storylines and likeable all-female cast that help set this New York dramedy apart from the rest. Follow Jane (Katie Stevens), Kat (Aisha Dee) and Sutton (Meghann Fahy) as they navigate the highs and lows of working on a glossy woman’s magazine.

MR INBETWEEN Season two of the Aussie black comedy begins in much the same way as the first, with conflicted hit man Ray (Scott Ryan) struggling to balance his job – killing people for money – with his life as dad to Brittany (Chika Yasumura), going on dates with Ally (Brooke Satchwell) and caring for his brother.

BIG LITTLE LIES If Oscar winner Meryl Streep isn’t a big enough drawcard to get you watching this series, then we don’t know what is! The second season of the Emmy-winning show looks at the uncertain lives of the Monterey Five after the death of Celeste’s (Nicole Kidman) abusive husband. 82 WD

KILLER SIBLINGS True crime addicts will find this gruesome series fascinating as it explores the upbringings, motivations and crimes of killer siblings. From teen brothers who butchered their family to identical twins who go on the run, the series explores what led them to commit such heinous acts.

2019

BLOOM The six-part series stars two-time Academy Award nominee Jacki Weaver as Gwen, an ailing and frail woman who is bestowed with a “miracle” fruit that makes her young again. Beautifully shot in country Victoria, the intriguing mystery also stars Aussies Bryan Brown, Phoebe Tonkin and Ryan Corr.

THE LOUDEST VOICE The much-talked about series stars Academy Award winner Russell Crowe as powerful Fox News founder Roger Ailes. We witness Roger’s rise as the Republican Party’s de facto leader and the many sexual harassment accusations and secret settlements that brought his reign at the channel to an end. A completely transformed Russell is mesmerising and is ably assisted by Naomi Watts and Sienna Miller.

THE COMMONS This dystopian climate change drama takes viewers on a confronting ride through the future environmental chaos and the terrifying brave new world of science. Eadie (Downton Abbey’s Joanne Froggatt) comes face to face with the dark heart of intellectual property theft, disaster capitalism and the frightening reality of selective mating.

OPRAH’S BOOK CLUB

Bookworms rejoice – Oprah’s Book Club is now on Apple TV+! Sit down with the US’s most loved chat show host (sorry Ellen!) as she delves into the stories and often pertinent issues behind our favourite – and soon-to-be favourite – books. In the first episode Oprah meets award-winning author and journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates as he discusses his first novel, The Water Dancer.

There’s nothing better than having a squiz where the rich and even richer live! Now in its eighth season, the show follows ruthless brokers Fredrik, Ryan, Steve, Luis and Tyler as they pull out all the stops to flog houses in an extremely competitive market.

MORNING WARS Jennifer Aniston is brilliant as egotistical TV anchor Alex, whose world is turned upside down when her co-host Mitch (Steve Carell) is accused of sexual misconduct. Forced to work alongside Bradley (Reese Witherspoon), the women’s icy relationship is just one fascinating strand to this drama that lifts the lid on the culture of morning TV.
