Arrested by the police for his involvement in a brawl where he and one of his friends assaulted a male teenager, Joe then 16 years old, was admitted to The Salvation Army Gracehaven for rehabilitation in 2007.

• Convenience - avoid the hassle of writing a cheque or worrying aboutenclosing cash in envelopes. • Simple - receive a single summary of all your gifts in a year. • Flexible - alter or cease your pledge at any time. • Affordability - it is easier to find $10 a month than it is to find $120 a year. • Cost-efficient - reduce the Army’s gift processing and mailing costs • Make a difference - regular income enables us to plan and develop our services and programmes more effectively.

In the past, Joe had a strong affiliation with gangs and was under-performing in school. He showed no interest in his studies, was often late for school and skipped lessons. He exhibited violence where he once punched a relief teacher and was subsequently suspended from school for a period

of time. He had no conscience about the difference between right and wrong and lived to solely please himself. Joe grew up in an environment that deserves much sympathy for his divorced parents were frequently incarcerated due to drug related offences. Raised by his paternal grandmother, Joe lacked parental love and guidance in his formative years. During counselling sessions in Gracehaven, Joe showed remorse towards his offence and his victim, and regretted that he let his father down. Joe demonstrated a sincere

How it works: 1. Decide on the amount you wish to contribute each month, then select your deduction by inter-bank giro or by credit card. 2. desire to change. Over time, his behaviour improved and he learnt to control his emotions, even in provocative situations. Staff also observed him to be a good advisor to his peers on many occasions. At school, he attended lessons regularly, a far cry from his previous absenteeism. Joe’s form teacher made positive comments about his serious commitment to learn and catch up. However due to the lack of a strong academic foundation, he managed to obtain only 2 GCE ‘O’ Level passes. The safe and structured environment at Gracehaven and the presence of caring adult mentors, coupled with Joe’s determination to make good, resulted in commendable progress in rehabilitation. He now possesses the maturity to process the consequences of his decisions and is resolute in keeping away from gang activities and vices. Earlier this year, Joe was granted long home leave to reside with his maternal grandmother. Gracehaven staff continue to provide guidance and supervision in various areas until such time when he can be fully discharged. He now sets his sights on a career in the food and beverage industry and has started an internship programme at a restaurant.

Charity Bike ‘n’ Blade 2009 Held in aid of Peacehaven Nursing Home, Charity Bike 'n' Blade (BnB) was organized by a group of amazing volunteers, many whom are avid cyclists. Helming the team for also the past three BnB events, Mr Sidney Lim, Services Director with Microsoft Singapore, and Chairman of the Organising Committee shared, “We hear many stories of people experiencing tough times, especially now. There are parents struggling to put food on the table, chronically ill senior citizens who do not seek medical treatment because they cannot afford to… so when a few of us got together last December to reminisce over our past BnB experiences, we felt that if ever there was a time to use Charity BnB again as a platform to help the community, this was it.”

On 5 September, 70 cyclists supported by 22 volunteers took a ferry from Changi Ferry Terminal to Tanjung Belungkor (Malaysia) where they commenced their ride to Mersing. Over two days, they cycled 320 km over bending curves and hilly terrains that sometimes seems never-ending. Also participating as cyclists from The Salvation Army were Jimi Tan (Chaplain, Peacehaven), Gregory Lee (Director, Public Relations) and three Singapore Central Corps members. The event has raised close to $212,000, surpassing the target of $100,000. A very big ‘Thank You’ goes to all the sponsors, riders, volunteers and supporters.

desire to change.
