Practical Tips for Safer Online Shopping The bargains and selection are mindboggling. Its fast, convenient and returns are easier than ever. But what about the bad guys out there, the phishing and malware? Follow these expert tips to shop online with confidence: Use Familiar Websites Use trusted sites rather than search engines. Beware of misspellings or sites using a different toplevel domain (.net instead of .com.) Those are the oldest tricks in the book. Look for the Lock Never ever buy anything online using your credit card from a site that doesn't have SSL (secure sockets layer) encryption installed. A site with SSL will start with HTTPS:// (instead of just HTTP://). You should see the locked padlock icon next to the URL in the address bar. Don't Tell All No store needs your social security number or birthday to do business. Combined with your credit card number for purchases, thieves can do a lot of damage with this info. Never give anyone your credit card over email. Ever. Check Statements Go online regularly during the holiday season and look for fraudulent charges on your electronic credit card, debit card and checking account statements. Report any inaccuracies right away to avoid liability. *Info from PCMag.com

Practical Tips for Safer Online Shopping - Continued Inoculate Your PC Protect against malware with regular updates to your anti-virus program. Use Strong Passwords Having uncrackable passwords is crucial when banking and shopping online during the holidays. Use a mix of letters, numbers and symbols, and never use common words or personal information in the password. Think Mobile Use apps provided directly by the retailers, like Amazon, Target, etc. Avoid Public Terminals It's a bad idea to use a public computer to make purchases, but if you do, log out every time, even if just checking email. Privatize Your Wi-Fi When shopping

away from home, stick to known networks (even if they're free) like those found at Starbucks or Barnes & Noble stores. Look for "attwifi," then open a browser to click into the "walled garden" to get final access. And think like a gangster: sit where nobody can look over your shoulder to see. Cards To Count On Stick to the source when you buy gift cards; resist the temptation to buy them on sites like eBay that may have little or no funds on them.

Too Good to Be True Be wary of scams and messages that offer free products with purchase, in particular an iPad, notepad or even holiday job offers. Many of these "offers" will come in via social media. Skepticism in most cases can go a long way toward saving you from a stolen card number.

payment, may take 30 days to show up on a credit report.

This has never been more true than with regard to your credit report, especially when you get ready to finance a home. Understanding your credit report before you attempt to finance a home may pay you huge dividends in reduced time and stress.

It’s important to bear in mind the fact that you may have to take some action based on information found in your credit report.

More involved issues, such as disputing a transaction or removing incorrect information on a credit report, may take much longer.

As upsetting as it may be to realize you’ll need to pay down or pay off debt, which could take several months depending on the amount, it’s even more upsetting to not know until it’s too late.

The more ahead of the curve you are in this process, the better off you’ll be! Questions about your credit ? Just Call!

Ask the Agent: This Month’s Question I’m going to be moving locally so plan on packing myself to save money. Do you have any tips? Here are some general suggestions from the experts to help your move go smoothly: Heavier items on the bottom, lighter items on top of each box. Load heavier boxes first, toward the front of the truck, for balance. Fill in any gaps in boxes with clothes, towels, or paper. And don’t mix items from different rooms in the same box. Label and number each box with general contents, room it’s destined for and keep a notebook to keep track of what you’ve packed. Don’t skimp on tape! Use several pieces of tape to close bottom and top seams. Make an X with masking tape across fronts of glass framed pictures to strengthen and to hold glass together if it shatters. Wrap them in bubble wrap and box them with cardboard between each framed piece for more protection. Move valuables requiring extra special treatment in your car! Want the name of some reputable, local movers? Just call – I’m here to help!
