PITT’S BUZZER BEATERS Februaryy 18,, 1928 Charley Hyatt, probably Pittsburgh’s greatest basketball player before 1950, preserved the Panthers’ perfect 21-0 season when he took a pass from Paul Zehfuss and hit a last second shot to upend Notre Dame 24-22. Februaryy 26,, 1951 In the last game played at Pitt Pavilion, Pitt defeats West Virginia 72-71 when Scott Phillips hits a bank shot in the closing seconds.

Februaryy 2,, 1963 Dave Roman hits a last second shot that seemingly beat West Virginia. The shot was nullified because another Pittsburgh player signaled for a timeout just before Roman released his shot and West Virginia claimed a 68-67 victory at Fitzgerald Field House. Februaryy 15,, 1964 Brian Generalovich scores on a layup in the closing seconds for a 69-67 home win over Syracuse. Februaryy 15,, 1975 Keith Starr hits a layup in the final two seconds to defeat Virginia 71-70. Februaryy 23,, 1974 Pitt’s 22-game win streak ends with a 66-64 loss at Penn State when PSU’s Ron Brown swishes a jumper from the top of the key as the buzzer sounds. December 13,, 1975 Pitt stretches its Fitzgerald Field House win streak to 27 games when Tom Richards threw in a 45-foot shot at the buzzer to defeat Ohio 72-71. The 1973-74 and 1974-75 teams never lost a game at the Field House. Februaryy 2,, 1977 A 22-foot last second corner jumper by Larry Harris gave Pitt a surprising 65-64 upset win vs. nationally ranked Cincinnati (coached by Gale Catlett) at Fitzgerald Field House. Harris scored 31 points in the win. Februaryy 11,, 1978 Larry Harris hit a corner jumper at the end of regulation to tie the game against Maryland and send it into overtime at Civic Arena. Pitt won 89-86. December 15,, 1979 Sammie Ellis banks in a shot off the glass to defeat St. Bonaventure, 72-70 at Fitzgerald Field House. Februaryy 10,, 1979 Pitt upsets No 3 ranked and 17-1 Duke 71-69 at Cameron Indoor Stadium. With the score tied at 69-69 with 3:05 to go, Duke coach Bill Foster decided to have his team hold onto the ball. With 10 seconds to go, Sam Clancy intercepted a back-door pass intended for Jim Spanarkal from Bob Bender, dribbled the length of the floor, missed a 15foot jumper, grabbed the rebound from Mike Gminski and dropped in an easy layup with two seconds left to give Pitt a 71-69 upset win.

December 29,, 1981 In Pitt’s third game of the Far West Classic in Portland, Ore., Clyde Vaughan hits a jumper in the closing seconds to defeat Tennessee 56-54. Februaryy 14,, 1987 Ranked No. 10, the Panthers went into overtime against Boston College without 610 center Charles Smith, who fouled out with 2:37 to go. The upset-minded Eagles led 6158 with three seconds to go when freshman Rod Brookin drained a three-pointer from the corner to force another overtime period. Januaryy 12,, 1993 An Antoine Jones tip-in with 0.06 seconds left gives Pitt an 80-78 road victory over Connecticut at the Hartford Civic Center. Januaryy 16,, 1993 A three-point bomb by freshman Garrick Thomas broke a 73-73 tie with four seconds remaining, lifting Pitt to an upset of No. 7 ranked Seton Hall. Thomas scored 16 points, Chris McNeal added 19 and 11 rebounds. The win helped give Pitt its fifth NCAA bid under Paul Evans. Januaryy 6,, 1996 At West Virginia, Jerry McCullough sends the game into overtime as he converts a 22-foot jumper at the top of the key with 3.8 seconds left. Pitt goes on to win an 84-83 decision. Februaryy 17,, 1999 Ricardo Greer scores on an offensive rebound putback to help Pitt defeat West Virginia 69-67 on ESPN. Februaryy 20,, 1999 Three days later in the following game, Steve Flores hits a shot with five seconds to go to give Pitt a 67-66 win over Boston College. Januaryy 4,, 2006 Ronald Ramon converts a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to lift Pitt to a 100-97 double overtime win over Notre Dame. December 20,, 2007 Levance Fields hits a stepback 3-pointer with 4.7 seconds left in overtime to defeat Duke 65-64 at Madison Square Garden. Fields dedicated the shot to his friend and teammate Mike Cook, who tore his ACL during the first minute of overtime. Februaryy 7,, 2008 Ronald Ramon hit a game-winning 3pointer to give Pitt a 55-54 win over West Virginia at the Petersen Events Center. The game represented the first buzzer-beater in PEC history. Keith Benjamin drove the lane, drew Ramon’s defender and found Ramon open in the corner. March 4,, 2010 Trailing 71-70 with 3.5 seconds remaining, Ashton Gibbs received an inbounds pass, dribbled up the court, pulled up for a 30-foot 3-pointer and swished the shot at the buzzer to give Pitt a 73-71 win over Providence. Pitt battled back from a 6156 deficit with less than seven minutes to go.
