With the win, Pitt won the Big East regular season outright and earned the No. 1 seed upon entering the Big East Championship...Villanova opened the second half with a 10-3 run to take a 28-25 lead, but Pitt responded with a 16-4 run of its own to take command...Pitt used a 9-0 run capped by a Travon Woodall driving layup to give the Panthers a 36-30 lead with 10:06 left...An Ashton Gibbs 3-pointer put Pitt up 43-32 with 7:02 to go...Pitt hit 18 consecutive free throws in the second half and finished 23-26 in the game...Gilbert Brown became the 40th player in school history to score over 1,000 career points...The contest marked Pitt’s Senior Day for Gilbert Brown, Gary McGhee and Brad Wanamaker...Pitt’s 15-3 Big East record tied a schoolbest for league winning percentage and most league victories in a season (2008-09)...Pitt defeated Villanova for the eighth consecutive time in Pittsburgh and improved to 4-0 vs. the Wildcats at the PEC.

Butler’s Matt Howard hit a go-ahead free throw with 0.8 seconds left to give No. 8 seed Butler a 71-70 win over Pitt...Trailing 70-69, the Panthers had a chance to win it at the foul line with 1.4 seconds left, but converted 1-2 free throws...Howard went to the free throw line after he was fouled while rebounding the miss...Pitt rallied back from a nine point deficit with an 11-0 run in taking a 43-41 lead with 14:34 to go in the game...The run was sparked by a Gilbert Brown 3-pointer, two Nasir Robinson layups and capped by a Brad Wanamaker layup...Pitt extended its lead to as many as five points (53-48 with 10:37), but Butler wouldn’t wilt, as the game experienced eight lead changes in the last 10 minutes...Pitt erased a four-point deficit with a Brown 3-pointer and two Wanamaker free throws to lead 69-68 with 1:58 to go...With three seconds, Butler converted on an Andrew Smith layup to lead 70-69...Pitt quickly inbounded the ball and was fouled with 1.4 seconds left...Butler led 38-30 at halftime after it hit eight 3-pointers and was paced by Shelvin Mack’s 16 points and four 3-pointers...The Bulldogs led by as many as 12 points in the first half...Mack’s 30 points represented a Pitt opponent NCAA Tournament individual single game high.
