Coach Wingate (1 year): 20-9 Stephanie Lawrence Yelton was named the West Florida women’s basketball team’s new head coach on April 26, 2012. Yelton is the fourth head coach in UWF women’s basketball history. Yelton brings 16 years of women’s basketball coaching experience at the NCAA Division I and II levels. The Morrow, Ga. native has five years of experience as a Division I head coach at Charleston Southern, and her most recent position was an assistant with the Boston College women’s basketball program. Yelton is a 1996 graduate of North Carolina, where she was a member of UNC’s 1993-94 NCAA national championship team. Yelton graduated from UNC as the school’s career leader in every three-point shooting statistical category. She was also an ACC All-Tournament Team selection in 1995. After her college career, she also competed professionally in the New Zealand Professional Basketball League in 1996. Yelton graduated from UNC in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies with an emphasis in interpersonal communication. She was married to the late Jack Yelton for 14 years, and she has two sons, Bobby and Toby.

By the numbers

Vette leading the way Even after finishing second on the team in scoring while starting 20 of 27 games during the 2011-2012 season, Hanna Vette was not an immediate starter in 2012-2013. After averaging 12.1 points off the bench through the first seven games of the season, Vette got her first start 12/1 vs. Union. She has started the past five games for UWF, averaging 18.8 points and 9.2 rebounds during that span.

Johnson making an impact Toynetta Johnson leads the Gulf South Conference in assists and steals and has made an immediate impact since transferring from Pearl River CC. She has 34 more assists and 26 more steals than the next closest Argonaut. Johnson is second on the team with 164 points, an average of 11.7 per game, 59 field goals made and is second the team with 19 3-pointers. If she can cut down on her turnovers, an average of 7.2 per game, she could be well on her way to breaking into the top 10 in assists in a single season all-time at UWF. In addition, she is currently on pace to finish second for most steals all-time in a single season at UWF.
