Design the branding and promotional material for a small homemade chutney company.

The concept for this brief was to communicate the homemade, authentic nature of the business through the use of photography and clean, functional typography.

Research

Research & Context

The research i undertook to inform the design of this brief was into food branding and packaging with an authentic aesthetic, the reason for this was i wanted to see how brands create that homemade authentic feel and see what i could take from that, i saw the some brands used illustration and hand rendered designs to achieve this but some others used a typographic approach. The typographic approach is the road i am going to go down with this brief as i feel thats the route i can accomplish the best.

I also looked into the use of photography as this is another aspect that i was considering incorporating into the identity. I think that this approach will be advantageous to the outcomes if the correct imagery is used.

Development

Development

The development of the labels for the chutney jars, this involved experimenting with layouts as i had a few different ideas of how i could achieve the desired outcome. As you can see some of these work better than others, but i feel you could potentially use any one of them as a label if you wanted to.

I also had to consider the use of the identity over the printed outcomes that where the primary outcomes to this brief. And decided that a simple, clean typeset identity was the way to go, using the use of photography to add the authentic touches.

The images above show the primary printed outcomes to the brief: a promotional catalogue and business cards. You can see how the use of photography adds the authentic homemade feeling to the outcomes of the brief. The addition of the clean, simple logotype adds a modern feel to the identity, giving a good balance to the authentic feel from the photography.

The use of a serif typeface in the catalogue also add to the balance between the authentic feel from the photography and the modern feel from the logomark, which i think works well.

Printed Stationery

Outcomes

Business Cards I feel that the business cards are they best outcome to the brief, i feel like they achieve the concept the most and they provide the perfect balance between a modernist and authenticity.

The cards are finished by using a rich vermilion red sandwiched between the front and back of the cards, adding a sense of quality to the identity, something that is important because the brand is producing a quality product.

This image shows how the identity could be applied to a further range of products such as a web platform, letterhead, envelopes and a ledger for retaining customer details.

The website focuses on being a platform for showcasing the products, finding more information out about the brand and also to order the products.

Labels

Outcomes

These are prospective labels for the chutney jars, these would be printed straight onto clear class jars.

I think that these carry the identity through to the products well, the use of the curved type is a choice done to fit the labels onto the front of the jars, instead of the type being straight and having to wrap around the sides slightly.
