Locals help Lions appeal

THE Lions Club of Mooloolaba thanks the Sunshine Coast public for their generosity in supporting their recent three day “bucket” collection at Sunshine Plaza and at their Fisherman Road Sunday Markets to help whose affected by the recent fires.

Shoppers emptied purses and pockets of small change and in many cases made substantial contributions totalling $2,445.50 over a three day period.

The club has more than matched this amount to forward a total of $5,000 to the one Lions district in Tasmania which encompasses the worst affected areas.

Every cent collected will go to local communities in the affected areas with no monies taken out as all the Lions members are volunteers.

To date Lions clubs have contributed over $50,000 to their national appeal which is being used to help families in Tasmania.

A further $10,000 from the Australian Lions Foundation Emergency Grants funds has gone to help stricken families in the Coonabarabran area.

Two weeks later and the club was once again seeking help for Queensland communities devastated by floods. The club contributed $3,247.80 to the $3,752.20 from the second “bucket” collection to send $7,000 to assist these communities.

These funds have been sent to their own Lions District treasurer for immediate distribution to families in need following the floods.

Their district extends north through the worst affected areas.

Lions Club administration is generally self-funded by the members themselves.

Hands off our super, seniors warn OVER half of Australians aged 45-plus with knowledge of superannuation believe the rules change too often.

Almost 40 per cent of these people who are still working say changes to the system are affecting their retirement plans.

And of those already retired, 25 percent say the uncertainty created by those changes is affecting their retirement.

The figures, buried in a wider National Seniors labour force survey published in December, come amidst speculation that superannuation may fall foul of the May federal budget.

National Seniors chief executive, Michael O’Neill, says the findings are a warning to policy makers considering raiding superannuation to fund election promises.

“Superannuation is still young and its reputation ultimately rests on its ability to produce promised goods: the retirement incomes Australians have sacrificed and planned for”.

FARMER, BrianWinkel and his wife Mary, gave a humourous yet informative talk to over 100 Currimundi Combined Probians at their February meeting recently. Farmer Brian has won numerous timber sawing and felling awards in the past and shared an informative video presentation with the Club. Mary shared her passion for farming and how so many farmers are now being financially stretched and forced from the land. Jokes ranging from lost false teeth – twice – in the surf – and found again, to tales of supermarkets and farm life, kept everyone attentive and interested.

Families need certainty on Super MEMBER for Fairfax, Alex Somlyay, recently said that the Coalition will restore certainty in superannuation by ruling out any negative, unforeseen changes to superannuation in the next term.

“It is clear that the Gillard Government is planning superannuation tax increases in the May Budget and if Labor is reelected, they will introduce more taxes on superannuation. When it comes to super, Wayne Swan has form having already increased super taxes by over $8 billion”, said Mr Somlyay “Labor has a $120 billion budget black hole and has refused to rule out more

superannuation tax increases after the next election. Retirees, and those approaching retirement need certainty. I believe that we should be encouraging people who save for retirement rather than penalising them.

Mr Somlyay said the Coalition has made a clear commitment in its Real Solutions plan there will be no negative unexpected changes to superannuation in the next term.

“I repeat Tony Abbott’s pledge for the record and so the people of the Sunshine Coast can hold me to account – a Coalition Government will not make unexpected changes that

are detrimental to superannuation in the next term.

“I call on the government to come clean about its plan for superannuation.

My concern is that Labor will say one thing before the election on super, and do another after the election – just like Julia Gillard did with the carbon tax.

Mr Somlyay said the government also needed to come clean about the low income superannuation contribution.

“Labor promised a low income superannuation contribution as part of ‘spreading the benefits’ of the mining tax. Instead, the mining tax has raised next to nothing and the Budget continues to languish in deficit. There is no doubt, Labor will scrap this superannuation benefit.

Mr Somlyay said the Coalition would scrap the mining tax and any ‘spending’ linked to the mining tax and that includes the low income superannuation contribution – the difference between the Coalition and Labor is that we are being upfront about it.

Mr Somlyay said Australians approaching retirement, retirees and indeed everyone receiving employer super wanted certainty and confidence in superannuation and the time had come for Labor to agree to no negative changes to superannuation in the next term.

“Restoring confidence in superannuation is part of the Coalition’s Plan to deliver a strong and prosperous economy”.

Age barriers to work IN October 2012 the Australian Law Reform Commission released a discussion paper for its inquiry into legal barriers to older persons participating in the workforce and other productive work.

Grey Areas: Age Barriers to Work in Commonwealth Laws (ALRC DP 78, 2012) was initiated as part of the Australian Government response to population ageing with input from individuals and organisations.

The ALRC was asked to consider Commonwealth legislation and related legal frameworks that either directly or indirectly impose limitations or barriers that could discourage older persons from participating or continuing to participate in the workforce or other productive work.

The Discussion Paper puts forward proposals for law reform in the areas of recruitment and employment, work (place) health and safety, insurance, social security and superannuation.

The ALRC suggests the need for a combination of legislative and regulatory reform, together with measures to increase education and awareness and address perceptions and stereotypes surrounding mature age workers.

In the light of predictions that a decline in birthrates and increasing longevity indicate that in coming decades there will be fewer young people to contribute to the economic costs of supporting an ageing population, it becomes more likely it will be necessary to consider working past the present retirement age.

The final report is to be delivered to the AttorneyGeneral of Australia by 31 March 2013.

Parrots putting on a performance ON March 12 Parrots in Paradise, a privatelyowned, not for profit bird theme park at Glasshouse on the Sunshine Coast, will welcome television veterinarian Dr Harry and the film crew from Better Homes and Gardens.

The team will film the entire hour-long show featuring more than 300 birds performing tricks which illustrate how intelligent these birds can be.

In a show with as much appeal to four-year-olds as to 104-year-olds, the parrots ride on merry-gorounds, do gymnastics, hold fashion parades, fight fires, play ten-pin bowls or basketball, ride skateboards or (Barbiesized) horses, put themselves to bed and any number of tricks responding to a signal or more frequently, they prefer the spoken word.

Some respond vocally to questions and answers.

Most of the birds performing are Asiatic Alexandrine parrots.

A student asked, ‘What gender is ‘computer’?’

Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether ‘computer’ should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.

The men’s group decided that ‘computer’ should definitely be of the feminine gender (‘la computadora’), because: No one but their creator understands their internal logic.

The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else.

Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your income on accessories for it.

The women’s group, however, concluded that computers should be masculine (‘el computador’), because: In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on.

They have a lot of data but still can’t think for themselves.

They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they are the problem. As soon as you commit to one, you realise that if you had waited a little longer, you could have got a better model.

Going Solar? Go Uni-Industries Rising electricity costs prompted me to investigate Solar

So I started to shop around. I had a number of solar companies come around; they were just salesman and didn’t seem to know what they were talking about.

Uni-Industries came recommended, so I gave them a call. When their representative came around, he explained how the job would be carried out and answered all my questions. Seasons residents put care into action

SEASONS Waterford West Care Community will fund-raise for Bundaberg flood victims through a dinner function on Wednesday 6 March.

The crisis in Bundaberg became personal when residents Warren and Gloria Caple’s son Warren and his family were in the centre of the devastation.

Seasons’ staff and other residents were quick to rally support and came up with the fundraising evening where 150 guests will enjoy a seafood

YOU may have noticed a changed landscape while driving past the Old Nut Factory at The Big Pineapple. This iconic location was in disrepair until recently, but is now coming to life with the establishment of the Centre for Growing Sustainability (CGS).

The CGS has involved the Sunshine Coast community by providing community growing space, education at all levels, research and development and many other organic growing related activities.

It will involve students from pre-school to secondary schools and universities/colleges. This Centre will be an enormous drawcard for The Big Pineapple and Sunshine Coast tourism.

Locals wanting to get involved ‘from the ground up’ swarmed on-site at the old Nut Factory this week to show their support for creating this new establishment, with some great assistance from The Big Pineapple staff.

In fact, both countries are well on their way to establish CGS – India and China.

A recent UN paper on food security acknowledged the importance of soil health as the foundation for growing sustainably into the future. Australia has followed its lead by appointing Major General Michael Jeffery (AC, CVO, MC Retd.), former Governor General of Australia, as its first Ambassador for Soil Health. The Centre will quickly establish the Sunshine Coast as

a leader in ecosustainability.

CGS Community Day is held every Tuesday from 9am and also the ‘BIGWIGs’ social garden group will be held every Wednesday morning from 9am to 11am, followed by morning tea.

“A Touch of Irish” concert PEOPLE who enjoy Irish music are in for a treat at 2pm on Saturday 16th March (the day before St Patrick’s Day) when the Sunshine Coast Concert Band present “A Touch of Irish” concert at Sienna College, Sippy Downs.

This 40 piece band under the baton of Ken Chadwick OAM will have toes tapping (and perhaps even dancing in the aisles) to lively familiar tunes, including “Dear Old Donegal” “Lord of the Dance” “MacNamara’s Band” “Irish tune from County Derry” and of course, “It’s a Great Day for the Irish”. There’ll also be swing numbers, such as “Mack the Knife” and “That’s Life”, and as usual, a Dixie group will wow the audience!

The singers are Bev Gourlay, Aart Schouten and Dave Stygall, and the compere is one of 104.9 FM’s favourite announcers - John Sheed.

Admission is $15 at the door, which includes a home-baked afternoon tea provided by the parents of the Nambour Special School, who will received the proceeds from this concert. Children are encouraged to attend, and they’ll be admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Tickets can also be booked at either the Old Buderim Post Office (King St.Buderim) or at the Nambour Special School office (Phone 5476 6100).

MR and Mrs. Caple were married on the 14th February1953 in a church in Auburn in

Sydney. They had their reception in the church hall, and the church catered on their wonder-

ful day. It was a large wedding with family and friends.

Mrs. Gloria Caple said, “the secret of a great marriage is not to be selfish, look out for each other. Do things together, we like to go fishing together as we both enjoyed it. The best thing was going out and about with the caravan”.

“We would never leave each other in anger. We would always give each other a kiss before we go to bed or go off to work. The important thing is to resolve issues. Don’t hold grudges with each other.

Gloria said, “Warren is my best friend we tell each other every thing.

No secrets in our marriage”. Warren said, with a big smile on his face, “the secret for men is doing as you are told”.

Gloria also said “they took their vows seriously, til death do we part”. Warren is 84 Gloria is 81 and they have 3 children.

It really is going to be quite an event.”

Mary said like any Brideto-be, she is very much looking forward to the big day however her groom is a little more nervous.

“I am giving Eric plenty of reassurance. After all, it’s too late to change his mind now!” she said.

Eric said while he is looking forward to the day, he is also worried about being the centre of attention in front of so many people.

“To be honest, as much as I am looking forward to it I think I will be glad when it’s over,” Eric said with a wink and a smile.

“Mary has her outfit planned but I am not quite sure what I will wear yet. I have one suit but I am not holding out too much hope that it still fits.”

Mary and Eric can’t remember the exact moment when they first met but Eric recalls it wasn’t too long after he was discharged from the Australian Army.

“I served in the Australian Army between 1940 and 1946 with postings in Paua New Guinea, Moritai Island and Borneo. My brother, who was already engaged, invited me out one day. That’s when I met Mary. I was very lonely before that. Mary was a wonderful source of companionship and we got along famously,” Eric said. Mary shares a similar memory.

“I can’t remember the exact moment we met, it was so long ago now, but I can remember very clearly going to our first dance together. When Eric put his arm around me and lead me onto the dance floor – I fell in love with his hands! I really did. I knew right then that he was the one for me,” she said. When asked about their secret to such a long and happy marriage, Mary is quick to respond.

“The secret to our marriage is as simple as having a deep and lasting love for one another, being patient and also tolerant. We sometimes disagree on things, but not once have we ever had an argument,” she said.

“Eric has always put the family first. He has been a wonderful Husband and Father.”

Eric, ever the romantic pauses for a moment before adding, “I’m not so sure – but it’s a long sentence. You only get 15 years for murder!” he says with a laugh before Mary gives him a playful smack.

“In all seriousness, we get along very well. We never fight; we always talk things through and sort it out. I think being a good listener is beneficial,” he said.

Eric and Mary moved into RSL Care Inverpine Residential Care Community in 2012 after Mary began to have a few falls at home.

“A friend of ours was actually living here and highly recommended it.

We were so thrilled to learn that we were able to have adjoining rooms and we moved within the month!” Mary said.

“We’ve been very happy here. The RSL Care staff are so friendly and nice.

They keep you laughing, positive and feeling young.”

Eric served in the Australian Army between 1940 and 1946, with postings in Papua New Guinea, Moritai Island and Borneo. He worked as a Quarry Man which he thoroughly enjoyed. He was particularly good at ‘spoiling’ – a skilled way of breaking-up large boulders into smaller rocks and stones). Later in life, Eric worked in several Butter Factories in a variety of roles and was also a Dairy and Produce Farmer before tractors came along. He used a Clydesdale horse called ‘Bess’.

Mary began her working life as a Sales Assistant earning the princely sum of 7/6 per week before taking up a Clerical position at the Colac & District Hospital. She remembers telephone systems consisting of plugs and cords. Mary and Eric had eleven children between them, so Mary was kept busy being a Wife, Homemaker and a Mum. RSL Care is a not-forprofit charitable care provider that reinvests funds generated from its activities into supporting the Service and Ex-Service community, its dependants and other members of the broader Australian community in need.

GLASSHOUSE Gourmet Snail Farm and The Guilt Trip: Our members this month have been social butterflies having two outings in a week. The first was on Tuesday 28th January with a very interesting visit to the Glasshouse Gourmet Snail Farm with several members of our club as guests of the owners Cliff and Mary Page. “The Great South East” crew were filming a segment for their programme to be aired on the 14th April. Cliff and Mary provided us with morning tea and we all enjoyed a pleasant couple of hours learning about the breeding of these quite small creatures. We were very impressed with the very intensive work required to breed the snails for supplying to restaurants in many parts of Queensland including Hamilton Island.

On 5 th February we headed to the movies at Morayfield to see the Guilt Trip. About 17 members had coffee before the movie. It was alight hearted movie which I think most of us could relate to. Our March outing is to the Landsborough Museum which has to be paid at our luncheon meeting on 20th February. Fresh Walk the mossie talk THAT’S the catch cry from Sunshine Coast Council in order to prevent mosquitoes breeding after inclement weather.

Residential properties have been shown to be significant mosquito breeding sites, particularly during summer. With the long dry spell ended on the Australia Day weekend, we need to get a message out to all residents about the need to be vigilant about mossie breeding in and around properties.

Householders should build in an easy-to-follow mini mossie breeding survey into their weekly house/yard maintenance routine.

Given mosquitoes are capable of transmitting debilitating diseases such as Ross River virus and Barmah Forest virus, regular simple household actions to reduce or eliminate their breeding should be taken seriously.

Here are some simple tips to reduce mosquito breeding around your home: Check places out of sight where they may be breeding e.g. roof guttering, where shallow pools can collect; Repair roof guttering and remove leaves & debris regularly; Remove overhanging vegetation;

Sunshine Coast Computer Club YEARS ago when the question arose in a household about buying a computer there had to be discussion on ‘Where will we put it?’ In those days there was what was called a tower and a monitor (bulky items) and a key board which comprised the ‘computer’ and then a printer to go with all that. The solution seemed to be to buy a computer desk which comprised separate shelves for the tower, the monitor and the printer and a slide out shelf for the keyboard. All this had to be placed among the existing furniture in the house.

Now a laptop computer contains all of this with the only extra being a printer. If space is short the laptop can be set up on any table in the house and put away after use. This makes it all that more useful as the laptop can be taken away with you, or to a Computer Club Meeting or somewhere to get help with using the computer.

‘Lifestyle’ a key to successful retirement living A FOUR-YEAR old child will more often than not proudly declare that he or she is ‘almost five’ in an effort to appear ‘big’ and closer to school age.

Smartraveller is the Australian Government’s travel advisory service and is a good place to start when you’re planning a holiday, especially if it’s going to take you overseas. ARPQ on the move ASSOCIATED Residential Parks Queensland Inc continues to grow and we feel privileged that through our meetings with the appropriate government department over the last year we will be having continued input into the revision of the Manufactured Homes Residential Parks Act scheduled for this year. What we seek is a balance of interest that is fair to park operators and home owners.

ARPQ is also in contact with home owner associations in all other States and have had meetings with some when convenient. The idea is to form a Nation wide affiliated body of home owner associations so that by numbers alone we can and will be heard.

Research shows that the combined population of retirement villages and residential parks in Queensland is near 187,000.

It is important that all residential park homeowners here in Queensland join ARPQ to give credibility for this National body and your ARPQ $10-00 PP membership will guarantee this and will give you a quality group to rely upon for your future advisory and Information service.

IT is positive news that The Bank of Japan (BoJ) has announced it is raising its inflation target to 2% and adopting openended quantitative easing, Currently, Japan’s budget deficit is running around 10% of gross domestic product (GDP) and net public debt is around 135% of GDP compared to 73% in Europe and 84% in the US. sive monetary reflation in Japan, which is aimed at exiting deflation, has a number of mostly positive implications globally: • The Japanese yen is likely to fall further, encouraging quantitative easing for quite some time.

• Japanese shares are likely to perform well.

• A stronger Japanese economy will likely to unfold • Japan will no longer be a drag on global economic growth. Easier monetary policies in Japan will add to easier global monetary conditions.

• Yen weakness will put more pressure on competitor countries, notably Korea and Taiwan, which may in turn put more pressure on their central banks to further ease policy too.

• Aggressive easing from the BoJ adds further fuel to the practice of borrowing cheap in Japan and investing in higher yielding currencies like the Australian dollar.

Japan imports 19% of Australian exports and is our second largest trading partner, so beyond the risk of more upwards pressure on the Australian dollar, an exit from deflation and stronger growth in Japan will be positive news for Australia.

This year has already seen a number of positive developments for the glo-

bal economy, including: the avoidance of the fiscal cliff in the US; indications that the US debt ceiling will be extended; the relaxation of the Basel bank liquidity requirements; and solid data releases from the US and China. Aggressive Japanese policy reflation just adds to this list.

HAEMORRHOIDS, piles whatever you might call them..... they can be embarrassing to talk about, but they are often extremely painful. It’s important to get help. They are similar to varicose veins, caused by genetic weakness of veins, excessive pressure in the venous circulation, pregnancy, long periods of standing or sitting, and heavy lifting. They can be felt as itching, burning, painful, inflamed, irritated, swollen, bleeding or seepage. For an effective, cooling treatment, I usually recommend a soothing aloe vera gel, such as HemoClin gel (available from pharmacies), which can reduce pain and each of these symptoms. This gel supports the natural healing process, neutralizes harmful microbes and conditions the tissue. However, the best treatment for haemorrhoids is to prevent them from occurring altogether. A high-complex carbohydrate diet, rich in dietary fibre, is important, along with protective foods like blackberries, cherries and blueberries which will strengthen vein structures.

In summary, the secret to prevention is sensible food choices and support for the blood vessel walls.

Call for local action to improve bowel cancer survival rates BOWEL Cancer Australia is urging local action after a new report found the country’s second most common cancer has the worst survival rate of our four most common cancers.

While prostate, breast and melanoma patients share five-year survival rates of about 90 per cent, rates for bowel cancer patients languish at a comparatively low 66 per cent.

Bowel Cancer Australia chief executive Julien Wiggins said simple things in local communities can make a difference to people’s attitudes and knowledge of bowel cancer.

“We’re asking local communities throughout the country to join The Bowel Movement by taking three simple steps.

1.

Talk – reduce the embarrassment by talking with family and friends about signs, symptoms and testing for bowel cancer.

2.

Test – take a bowel cancer screening test, especially if you’re over 50.

3.

Tell – share your family’s medical history with close relatives.

“Research we conducted among 1,000 people aged 40-70 found just over half knew the signs and symptoms of a disease which can be treated successfully in approximately 90 per cent of cases, if detected early.

So, we’re asking people to talk. Friends and family are a key source of information.”

“The most important thing people aged 50+ can do to prevent and detect bowel cancer early is take a simple, painless FOB (Faecal Occult Blood) test at least every two years, as medical guidelines recommend.”

“There was some positive news in the 50-70 age group as 73 per cent knew the risk of bowel cancer increased from age 50 and 82 per cent knew that home screening tests for bowel cancer were available. Despite

this, less than half said they would definitely take a bowel cancer test in the next couple of years.”

“If you’re 50, 55 or 65, the Government will send you a free kit. For everyone else, talk to your GP or grab a BowelScreen® Australia test kit. The kits are available from many community pharmacies for a total cost of less than $40.”

Simplifying AGED CARE Choices Pen pal program bridges generations

A PENPAL program between students and residents at a Queensland aged care facility is helping to bring together the young and old.

The project, Bridging Generations, was developed by McKenzie Aged Care Group’s assisted living residence The Terraces, and was nationally recognised at last year’s Better Practice Awards, held by the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency.

The project began with children from All Saints College writing letters to residents who then replied. After a few exchanges, the students came to visit the residents at The Terraces and residents returned the favour.

Julie Wolsey, diversional therapist at The Terraces and initiator of the program, said it was a great occasion for both generations to learn from each other.

“The students have learned a lot about manners and how life used to be, while the residents just love hearing about

today’s world through the eyes of young children – they’re even learning about new technology like iPads, Skype and Facebook,” Ms Wolsey said.

This appreciation for new technology has helped some residents increase communication with their own families.

Ms Wolsey added the residents were feeling a great sense of personal satisfaction, pleasure and self-worth from the program. “You can just see residents’ eyes light up when the children come into the room, especially during the visit to the school, it brought back a lot of fond memories for them,” she said. The enthusiasm from the school is equally as strong, with students eagerly anticipating the arrival of each letter and enjoying the opportunity to tell someone who cares about their busy lives.

The program has been running for two years and many residents are still writing frequently to their original buddy.

IT’S no secret that home is where the heart is and we all want to remain in the comfort and security of our own home for as long as possible. The Federal Government has rolled out an extra 40,000 in-home care packages over the next five years in order that more elderly people can do exactly that. For many people, living in the comfort of their own home is an important part of growing older, but for some older people this may become difficult without extra help.

The number of in-home care packages is likely to be insufficient, as our population continues to age, but it’s a start. Prospective users of the service need to arrange an official assessment by a government-approved aged-care assessment team (ACAT) and having an assessment will enable the individual to apply for a subsidised home-care package.

A number of service providers are available to provide care at home with activities such as carrying groceries, running errands, transport to medical appointments, help with making phone calls, writing letters, reading and assisting with household responsibilities like cooking and cleaning. These services help seniors to live full, independent and dignified lives within the comfort of their own homes, providing care that enriches their lives and helps them maintain the highest possible level of independent living. A REPORT has been released examining whether older Australians face age discrimination when purchasing travel insurance.

The report, in 2012, ‘Ageism in Travel Insurance’, summarises the key findings from a survey conducted by National Seniors and COTA Australia regarding members’ views and experiences with travel insurance.

The survey, conducted between May and June, shows those aged 70 years and over are more likely to cite difficulties in obtaining travel insurance or affordable travel insurance as a major reason for ceasing to travel overseas.

Almost a third of respondents (32%) reported they have had to pay higher travel insurance premiums because of their age.

Some of the key findings also included: Less than half of the respondents (44%) ‘shopped around’ for the best travel insurance deal.

More than half of the respondents (53%) received ‘widely differing’ quotes for the cost of travel insurance, with most reporting a difference of between 11 and 50%).

Almost two-thirds of respondents (63%) have difficulty in understanding how any age restrictions operate after reading through information provided by insurers in Product Disclosure Statements, brochures and websites.

One in 20 respondents (5%) reported they had a travel insurance claim unexpectedly denied.

Keep safe when overseas

UNWARY tourists can make easy targets for thieves because they stand out in a crowd, are unused to their surroundings, and are generally carrying money, credit cards and valuables like cameras. You can reduce your risk of being mugged or robbed by taking a few simple precautions. It is a good idea to research the safety of your intended destination with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. This government department keeps an updated bulletin on travel destinations, covering factors such as political unrest or criminal activities that target tourists. You could also consult with your travel agent, or talk to friends who have already visited your intended destination.

At the airport watch for your suitcase as it appears on the carousel. Don’t hang back and wait for the crowds to disperse - you might find that someone else has already taken your bag in the meantime. Avoid changing money at airports, as thieves could be watching you.

Consult with your hotel manager or tourist information centre about the public transport in your area.

Make sure you know what official taxi cabs look like.

A thief may pose as a taxi driver to lure you into their car. Don’t share taxis with strangers.

Carjacking is a problem in some cities. When driving, keep all doors locked and windows up. Make sure your boot is locked too.

Don’t make yourself an attractive target when travelling – wear no expensive jewellery on obvious display. Wear valuables (such as travellerscheques and credit cards) on a belt worn under the clothes and next to the skin.

If feeling particularly vulnerable, wear your money belt somewhere other than around your waist. Thieves know all about money belts too.

Consider carrying a ‘dummy’ wallet holding a small amount of cash. If you are directly confronted by a mugger, you can hand over the dummy wallet and avoid further distress.If you are mugged, don’t fight back. It is better to lose a few dollars and a wristwatch than get injured.

We had a terrific Festive Season and made some great new friends. We ate too much (the light of my darkness tends to cook in expectation of the arrival of the entire Spanish army!) and drank too much (which I tend to do prior to the arrival of the relatives and the subsequent pillage of the wine cellar!) We made a heap of resolutions which did a ‘Gillard’ and were broken within forty eight hours.

As always the Season gave us some glorious memories. My mate Bob has a seven year old grandson whom he describes as a noise with dirt on it!

Luke was asked to write to Santa as part of the school term end. All the class were encouraged to put pen to paper and let Santa know what they really wanted for Christmas.

The letters duly went to

the parents via the North Pole and young Luke surprisingly pleaded for a GPS! Why on earth a seven year old would want a GPS was a mystery to Mum and Dad. As part of the letter writing process the children were also asked to explain their request.

His response was: “So I can find my pyjamas!!!!”

(Bob assures me that if you could see his room the logic of this request would be singularly obvious!)

One of the best questions I overheard this season was posed by an elderly gentleman who, with his charming wife, was staying with us. It was a wonderful reflection on the way the world has changed.

A young man who was also a guest was standing outside reception looking amazingly well dressed with white shirt, shoes you could see your face in and a suite as sharp as a Keating aside, a tie, actually clean shaven and nare a tat in sight. He was I believe waiting for a car to pick him up.

Slightly confused the young man departed for a wedding!

The assumption that no Festive Season will pass without me making a fool of myself is, I maintain, simply a vicious rumour!

However we had friends over whom we had only recently met. The conversation and the wine flowed and we started to talk about genealogy and our respective parents and our heritage.

Trevor, our new found friend, in describing his mother stated she had small teeth!

I took up this interesting disclosure and launched into a long and detailed discourse on the human race moving from carnivores to herbivores and thus small teeth should not be seen as any form of disadvantage. How the derivation of the word ‘Vegetarian’ came from the Latin meaning… “Does not hunt well!”

In fact it could be argued, I stated, that the manifestation of small teeth pointed to the ongoing evolution of the human species…and so on and so on!

At this point I noticed the table was looking at me as though I had totally lost the plot, that I was one room short of a motel! My wife had the look of. ..‘Should I at once ring for a carer to take him by the hand and gently lead him away?’

The problem was that I am going slightly deaf in one ear and Trevor was on that side. He leaned across the table and with great kindness said: “Actually Angus, I said my mother is Maltese!”

Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2013 now calling for entries

SUNSHINE Coast Council recently announced nation-wide entries are being sought for the prestigious Sunshine Coast Art Prize (SCAP), with entries closing on 28 March 2013.

Now in its eighth consecutive year, SCAP has achieved national acclaim for its annual representation of contemporary Australian art.

“SCAP is produced by Sunshine Coast Council to encourage artistic excellence and to bring quality artwork to a regional audience.

“The award provides a distinguished contribution to the national art calendar, attracting talented artists from around the country to enter contemporary 2D and 3D art.

“Every year this competition attracts a dynamic range of media and artists.

“The artists who participate, whether they are younger emerging artists or more established professionals, consistently produce an extremely high standard of art work.”

A selection of 40 finalists will be chosen from the entries in each of the national categories submitted to the pre-selection panel and will be presented in exhibitions at each of council’s galleries with the winners of the 2D and 3D categories each receiving $15,000 cash prize.

Sunshine Coast’s emerging tertiary students will be showcased through SCAP T3, a non-acquisitive art prize that includes $3,000 for a 2D category and $3,000 for a 3D category.
