CONTACT INFORMATION & EXAMPLES From time to time, concerns and questions regarding your children’s academic and social life in the Upper School may arise. As faculty and administration, we fulfill a variety of roles in our capacities as educators. We hope you find this section helpful in deciding which contact is most appropriate for specific questions and concerns. The right decision will allow us to serve your children better, save you time, and avoid confusion. Here are some typical examples with the appropriate contacts attached: I have concerns about my child’s placement (sectioning) in a course or the overall shape/direction of my child’s academic program. Contact: Your child’s Academic Coordinator or the Head of the Upper School. Note: the Advisor also works on drafting a course plan for the following year with your child until April, at which time the Academic Coordinator, who must give final approval, takes over. Please copy the Advisor when emailing the Academic Coordinator. I have concerns about a teacher’s style and grading policies. Contact: Preferably, the teacher in question, since this is more direct and efficient. But, if this proves uncomfortable for you or your child, then you may contact the Academic Coordinator OR the Head of Upper School. They will work with the student, teacher and sometimes Department Head to resolve the problem. I have concerns about my child’s study skills and time management. Contact: Your child’s Advisor and Academic Coordinator. If warranted, the Advisor or Academic Coordinator will consult with the Learning Specialist. I worry about my child’s social life at school (i.e., making friends, social distraction, balance of work and play).Contact: Your child’s Advisor. If you suspect the problem is deeper and involves real emotional distress, contact the School Counselor, Elizabeth Day. I want to follow up on my own child’s infraction or the behavior of other children. Contact the Grade Dean. I suspect my child requires a tutor. Also, I think I want to have my child tested for learning differences and needs. Contact: Academic Coordinator AND Learning Specialist. Note: all tutoring must be organized through the Learning Specialist and it is advisable to contact the subject teacher. Once testing is complete, a meeting with the Learning Specialist is required for any accommodation plan to be put into effect. I want to get another copy of my child’s course selections and schedule for the current or following year. Contact: Available through My Backpack or please contact the Scheduler. I want to get my child involved in more activities or find out more about extracurricular programs in the school. Contact: The Advisor or Head of Upper School I need to report an absence, make an appointment, get a copy of or return permission slips and get a copy of a transcript. Contact: Administrative Assistant to the Head of Upper School. For any college-related matter, Administrative Assistant to the Director of College Guidance.

POLICIES Attendance

UPPER SCHOOL

Students are expected to be in class at 8:00 a.m. Morning attendance is taken during first period class; underclassmen who are free during first period and in attendance must sign in the main hall by 8:00 a.m. to avoid being marked absent and receiving detention. Those who arrive late must inform the receptionist upon arrival and obtain a “tardy slip” which allows admittance into their first period class; teachers of first period classes will take attendance and collect the tardy slips. Students who have advance permission to arrive late to school must sign in upon arrival using the sheet located on the receptionist’s desk. Attendance at extracurricular activities, class meetings, assemblies, work crews, advisor meetings and morning announcements is mandatory. Students are expected to be punctual for all appointments; accordingly, in the event of tardiness to school or class, consequences will ensue.
