HISTORY

The Historic Magnolia House

AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY Known as the birthplace of the sit-in movement, Greensboro’s place in African American — and U.S. — history is wellknown. But, African American history in Greensboro goes back to the Revolutionary War and continues to shape the Gate City today. The New Garden Woods, now known as the Guilford College Woods, were a known meeting place on the Underground Railroad where Levi and Vestal Coffin assisted runaways going to Indiana from 1819 to 1826. Within these woods remains a champion tulip poplar tree, over 300 years old, known as the Underground Railroad Tree. Today, you can navigate the trail as a simulation of how fugitives seeking freedom navigated in the same woods. The trail leads to the tree standing as a silent witness to Underground Railroad activities on the land that served as a crossroad to freedom. CHARLOTTE HAWKINS BROWN MUSEUM AT HISTORIC PALMER MEMORIAL INSTITUTE The Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum interprets the life and work of Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown, a prominent educator, advocate for social justice, and her school, Palmer Memorial Institute. Visitors can explore the school’s campus and uncover connections between Dr. Brown and the Civil Rights Movement. Rental spaces available for special events. Year-round hours: Tues. - Sat. 9 am to 5 pm. Free. 6136 Burlington Rd. Gibsonville. 336-449-3310. nchistoricsites.org/chb

The property was recognized as a highly recommended place to stay in six editions of The Green Book. The Magnolia, hosted many famous guests over the years including Ray Charles, Jackie Robinson, Ike and Tina Turner, Louis Armstrong, James Brown, and James Baldwin. LOX STOCK & BAGEL 2439 Battleground Ave. 27408 • 336-288-2894 Mon-Sat: L D • $

FIRST CAROLINA’S DELICATESSEN

Maybe you’re looking for a deliciously simple lunch on the go or love to try the biggest, most decadent sandwiches on the menu. Either way, there’s a sandwich waiting to satisfy every appetite, and we’ve done our best to hunt down some of the best sandwich stops in Greensboro.

1635 Spring Garden St. 27403 • 336-273-5564 Mon-Sat: L D • $ For largest selection of deli style meats and cheeses in Greensboro, look no further than Lox Stock & Bagel and sister restaurant First Carolina Deli. For over 35 years, these two delis have been serving unforgettable sandwiches at unbeatable prices. Try the Hoboken - hot roast beef, cherry peppers, melted mozzarella, and mustard on a sub roll. For a deli classic, go for the Reuben, which has the best combination of corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing on rye in the city… with a Dr. Brown’s soda, of course.

GIACOMO’S ITALIAN MARKET 2109-E New Garden Rd. 27410 • 336-282-2855 Tues-Sat: L D Sun: L • O$ Giacomo’s Italian Market is a favorite among locals with their homemade salamis, sausages, and fresh mozzarella made using age-old family recipes. For over two decades, people line up daily for their famous subs and salads. The house specialty is the Italian Stallion with Milano Salami, Ham Capicola, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, oregano, oil, and vinegar on a freshly baked roll. For something warm and comforting, order the Meatball Parmesan featuring homemade meatballs smothered in tomato sauce and melted provolone cheese.

LINDLEY PARK FILLING STATION 2201 Walker Ave. 27403 • 336-274-2144 Mon-Sat: L D Sun: Br • O $$-$$$ A redesigned vintage gas station, Lindley Park Filling Station is a neighborhood favorite with fresh, colorful dishes, craft beer, and a large dog-friendly patio. The Madison Avenue is a light lunch with smoked turkey, granny smith apples, and honey walnut cream cheese on a flaky croissant. For a meat-free option, order the Mayflower - grilled portabella mushroom with provolone cheese, red peppers, basil aioli, and sprouts on a potato roll.

MELT KITCHEN & BAR 1941 New Garden Rd., Ste. 116, 27410 • 336-763-5445 Tues-Sat: L D Sun: Br • O $$ Melt Kitchen & Bar is a sunny local restaurant with salads, burgers, craft beers, and cocktails. Most importantly, they have panini. Ones that don’t complicate the classics, but expand on them – from the Cuban Reuben hybrid to the elevated Ham & Brie. For full decadence, try the Duck Club, which melts duck confit, crispy bacon, gouda, caramelized onions, and apricot thyme jam between toasty sourdough bread. For the side, don’t question it, just get the Duck Fat Fries and embrace the duck experience.

FREEMAN’S GRUB & PUB 1820 Spring Garden St. 27403 • 336-333-3399 Mon-Sun: L D Sat-Sun: Br • O $$ Freeman’s Grub & Pub is a small rustic restaurant serving tasty sandwich creations and interesting libations with a large selection of craft beers and house infused liquors. Their continuously changing weekly menu means there’s always something new to try, but staples such as the Chopped Brisket sandwich topped with pimento cheese, blackberry barbeque sauce, bacon, lettuce, and tomato are available every day. Another popular favorite, the Jerk Chicken with white slaw and mango chutney also has a vegan option available.

BÁNH MÌ SAIGON SANDWICHES & BAKERY

Lindley Park Filling Station

3808 W. Gate City Blvd. 27407 • 336-856-7667 Mon-Sun: L D • $ For $4 or less, you can get a delicious Vietnamese sandwich on a crispy, fresh-baked baguette topped with fresh cilantro, onions, carrots, jalapeños, pickled daikon radish, and a special mayonnaise sauce at this hidden gem. You can’t go wrong with the classic Bánh Mì with liver pate and slices of Vietnamese ham and porkroll, but another popular choice is the Bánh Mì Thịt Nướng, a barbecue sandwich with your choice of beef, chicken, or pork. 8 0 0 -3 4 4 -2 2 8 2 | 21

TRAVEL TIPS

PLAN YOUR

TRIP

Greensboro’s friendly Southern charm and abundant attractions and events make traveling with family or pets a breeze.

Meet Mo, VisitNC's first travel agent dog. Learn more about their exciting adventures around the state at NCdogtravelagent.com Mo, photo courtesy of VisitNC.com

FAMILY

DOG

Family fun is something that Greensboro prides itself on. It’s easy to see why with these ideas for your next family trip to our city.

Exploring the Gate City with your four-legged pal? Keep reading for activities both you and your dog are sure to enjoy.

Learning and fun take center stage at the Greensboro Children’s Museum. Pretend to drive a real firetruck, climb the 30-foot tall Neptune XXL Climbers, engage in STEM activities through hands-on play, and let imagination run free with exhibits including a post office, train depot, construction zone, supermarket, and more. Take the family on an adventure and head over to the Greensboro Science Center, which features an aquarium, science museum, zoo, OmniSphere Theater, and tree-top adventure park all in one place. Uncover dinosaur fossils, brave extreme weather, experience farm life, explore the science of the human body, and learn about animals including penguins, red pandas, sharks, gibbons, meerkats, lemurs, stingrays, and so much more.

Make new friends at The Barking Deck, is the best parts of a dog park and a dog-friendly bar all in one place. This indoor dog park has nearly 5,000 square feet of off-leash play space covered in vulcanized rubber with a separate small dog area. For the humans, there’s a wide variety of craft beers, hard ciders, spiked seltzers, and wine to choose from.

Wet ‘n Wild Emerald Pointe offers more than three million gallons of summer fun with over 36 ride and attractions at one of the largest water parks in the state. Go-karts, bumper boats, mini-golf, batting cages, laser tag and a two-story arcade make Celebration Station the go-to place for classic family fun all year. Celebrate the joys of theatre with family-friendly and youth productions at the Community Theatre of Greensboro. If you’re visiting in November, be sure to see their annual production of “The Wizard of Oz.” Cugino Forno located at Revolution Mill brings Neapolitan style pizza in a family-friendly environment.

Catch the excitement of a Greensboro Grasshoppers baseball game alongside your pet with Bark in the Park night at the First National Bank Field. Let your dog strut his stuff in the pet parade around the field before the game starts, and during the game enjoy product samples, activities, and prizes for both dogs and owners. Does your pup prefer the sport of shopping? Head over to Replacements Ltd., the world’s largest retailer of old and new china. Yes, this one-of-a-kind china store is pet-friendly so you can browse more than 11 million pieces from nearly a half million patterns of dinnerware, collectables, and estate jewelry with your furry home décor consultant. Soak up the sun, run, and play at the off-leash dog parks located at LeBauer, Country, and Southwest Parks. Treat yourselves with a pupcake for your dog and a slice of cake for you at Maxie B’s or unwind with local craft beer at dog-friendly Joymongers Brewing Co. after a long day of sniffing out adventures around the city.

WHERE TO STAY

Check our hotel listings on pages 49-53 and find a place for you and your family, two or fourlegged, to dream about tomorrow’s adventures. 8 0 0 -3 4 4 -2 2 8 2 | 63
