RMG Buckshaw: Up-To-Date Village Management Map

We also make it really easy for you to find help when you need it, by featuring some of the best local businesses so be sure to support local! For this edition, we have worked closely with Lancashire Constabulary and Chorley Police to bring you an update on what’s being done to help tackle the anti-social behaviour issues we have been having on our village. They have also produced a video for us which you can view on our Facebook page, Friends of Buckshaw Village. There always is a bit of confusion on the village as to which areas RMG manage, which roads are adopted and where the boundaries are. To help understand this, RMG Buckshaw have included the latest map on page 9. Have you got a few spots free in your calendar and would like to attend some local events during August, why not flick to our ‘What’s on Locally’ calendar on page 27 and see what takes your fancy. If you’d like to promote your business with ‘Friends of’ and reach lots of new customers, please get in touch with us and we’ll be happy to run through the great prices and wide range of options we have available for you!

Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour In Our Village Recently there has been an increased number of anti-social behaviour reports from residents across our village. Following concerns from residents regarding the anti-social behaviour, we have worked closely with Lancashire Constabulary and Chorley Police and are able to share the following update to explain how they have embarked on a partnership approach to try and combat the issue. Buckshaw has a lot to offer in terms of retail and food outlets, and football pitches, which makes it attractive to people visiting. Over recent weeks there have been reports of damage to flowerbeds, noise nuisance and general anti-social behaviour, which can come across as being intimidating. Sgt Paul Harrison of Chorley Police’s Taskforce said: “Over the last couple of months we have ran a number of sporadic covert and overt operations in the area. Many crowds of young people, between the ages of 11 and 16 years old, are gathering at key places such as Tesco and KFC and are coming in from Leyland and Chorley areas on the train. “We have been taking a partnership approach, working with British Transport Police, retailers, our Special Constabulary and Chorley Council. Whilst we are aware that not everyone is coming into Buckshaw to cause trouble, we are also working with local business owners who are providing vital information about when the trouble is happening and where, and gaining access to CCTV to help us identify who the troublemakers are.” Councillor Alistair Bradley, Leader of Chorley Council said, “Chorley is a fantastic place to live, work and visit and it’s disappointing when a small minority try to undermine this.

As a council, we’re dedicated to working with our partners to tackle ASB and we’re pleased that the police have been increasing their visibility in the area and have been engaging with partners to listen to resident concerns and to tackle the issues head on. We will continue listen to the concerns of our residents and businesses and engage with the police to ensure the safety of our communities.” Sgt Paul Harrison added: “It was recently ASB week and we were asking parents the following question: Do they know where their children are? Can you consider getting them involved in diversionary activities, particularly throughout the summer. We will continue to run sporadic operations where we will look to target offenders and proactively deal with those responsible through a number of methods including unacceptable behaviour orders, community protection warnings and banning orders.” Young children need to be made aware that getting involved in criminal activity at an early age can have consequences later on and can even affect career and travel plans in the future.co.uk)

BUCKSHAW VILLAGE

Get To Know Grace, Community Support Officer If you have been in contact with RMG recently, you have spoken with Grace, the new Community Support Officer who on a day-to-day basis is regularly in the RMG office on Buckshaw Village inside the Unity Place Community Centre. We recently spoke with Grace to find out more about her and what life is like at RMG. How did you get started working for RMG Buckshaw? I was looking for a new challenge and I saw the job advertised and thought it sounded really interesting. After being invited for an interview, I was lucky to be offered the post and have loved it ever since! What does a typical work day look like for you? During a typical work day, I spend time answering emails and telephone calls from residents. If there are any issues then I will arrange for any necessary repairs/work to be carried out. I also spend time carrying out site inspections across the estate as well as many apartment blocks across the village. Have you been able to get involved in many community events since joining RMG Buckshaw? Since joining RMG, I have helped out at the Buckshaw Christmas event selling raffle tickets, as well as attending the Buckshaw Village Residents meeting in May to help answer any queries some residents had. It has been great that we have been able to get behind lots of community events such as the Easter event on Buckshaw by providing Easter eggs as prizes and supplying the commemorative teddy bears as prizes for the Jubilee event and hopefully there’s a lot more to come soon! Is there anything in particular you and the team would like to say to the residents?

What’s your favourite thing about the job? Meeting all of the residents and getting involved with the events within the community If you could invite three people to a dinner, who would you ask? Barack Obama, Peter Kay and Beyoncé What’s your favourite film: Titanic What’s your guilty pleasure? Watching Christmas films even in the Summer What did you want to be when you were younger? A Vet

If you have any questions or issues, the team on Buckshaw are always here to help.

You’re on a desert island, you can take one person and three things that fit into a rucksak, what are you taking?

Myself and, the Property Manager, Jack are very approachable and happy to be of assistance.

I’d take Bear Grylls as well as food, water and my phone.

How can you contact Grace and RMG Buckshaw?

How To Avoid And Report Scam Messages Texting remains one of the most popular ways to keep in touch, so it’s no surprise that firms are increasingly choosing to market their products by text. But no-one wants to have their mobile phone bombarded with spam texts, advertising products and services they don’t want. This guide, supplied by Ofcom, explains more about spam texts and how to stop them. A spam text is a text message sent to a mobile phone marketing a particular product or service. These texts can have many purposes, for example:

the text to 7726. 7726 is a number all mobile customers using UK networks can text to report unwanted SMS messages or phone calls on a mobile phone.

Claims management - these mainly concern personal injury claims and claims for mis-sold payment protection insurance (PPI).

The number ‘7726’ was chosen because it spells ‘SPAM’ on an alphanumeric phone keypad. You will not be charged for sending texts to 7726.

Debt management - these messages offer various types of debt management services.

Organisations send these texts to generate ‘leads’ which they then sell on to firms who offer the service provided in the message.

If you receive a text message from a sender you are familiar with, or from a shortcode (a shortcode is usually 5 digits long but can be up to 8), reply ‘STOP’ to the telephone number or short code shown in the text message. This will inform the sender that you no longer wish to receive their text messages.

Did you know?

However, if the text message is from an unknown sender, or from a sender you are not familiar with, we recommend you don’t reply. Responding to the text will confirm that your number is active and might actually result in you receiving more messages, or even voice calls.

It is against the law for anyone to send you spam texts unless you have previously given them permission. However, if there is an existing customer relationship between you and the sender, it can send you spam text messages about similar products and services, as long as you are given the ability to opt out of receiving such messages. The law does not cover messages sent to business numbers.

Instead, you may report the text to your network operator. To report a spam text, forward

Keep Your Dogs Healthy & Happy In The Heat We have teamed up with Dogs Trust to bring you the best advice on how you can make sure your doggies stay happy and healthy in the warm weather. Dogs Trust 5 top tips: 1. Provide shade and water - Make sure your dog has access to shade and plenty of fresh water throughout the day. 2. Plan your walkies - Walk your dog in the early morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler. This will reduce their risk of heatstroke. Be particularly careful if your dog is old, overweight or suffers from breathing difficulties. 3. Do the five second tarmac test - Tarmac can get very hot in the sun and could burn your dog’s paws. Check the pavement with your hand before letting your dog walk on it - hold your hand down for five seconds, if it’s too hot for you, then it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. 4. Don’t let them get burnt - Keep your dog out of direct sunlight where you can. Use pet-safe sun cream on exposed parts of your dog’s skin, like the tips of their ears and nose. Ask your vet for more advice if needed.

5. Check ahead for adventures - If you’re planning a day out somewhere, check whether dogs are welcome. Some public parks and beaches may have Public Space Protection Orders or Dog Control Orders at certain times of year. What to do if your dog overheats? If dogs are too hot and can’t reduce their body temperature by panting, they may develop heatstroke which can be fatal. Heatstroke can affect any type of dog, but certain breeds and types of dog are at increased risk, including brachycephalic or flatfaced breeds such as English Bulldogs, Pugs and French Bulldogs. Symptoms of heatstroke in Dogs: Panting heavily, drooling excessively, appears lethargic, drowsy or uncoordinated, vomiting, collapsing and diarrhoea. If your dog is showing any of these signs, contact your nearest vet and follow their advice. Remember to never leave your dog in a vehicle. In just 20 minutes, a dog could die in a hot car. Winding a window down is not enough.

August 2022 Friends Of

Summer Recipes

Chocolate Jungle Jam Jar 150g Cubed Butter, 200g Bar Milk Chocolate, 50g White Chocolate, 3 Large Eggs, 150g Golden Caster Sugar, 75g Plain Flour, 25g Cocoa Powder, 75g Desiccated Coconut, 1 tsp Green Food Colouring, 250g Pack Green Ready-To-Roll Icing, 75g Pack Milk Chocolate Sticks, 200g Pack Jelly Snakes & 6 Jam Jars. 1. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Break up 150g of the milk chocolate and put it in a bowl with the butter. Sit the bowl over a pan of gently simmering water and allow to melt. Set aside to cool. 2. Grate the remaining milk chocolate and set aside. Now chop the white chocolate into small pieces. 3. Put the eggs and sugar in a bowl and using a whisk, beat for 4-5 mins until pale and thickened. 4. Pour the butter and chocolate into the egg mixture and stir. Sieve the flour and cocoa powder and fold into the mixture. Stir in the white chocolate. 5. Divide the mixture between the jars. Sit the jars in a roasting tin and pour boiling water into the bottom of the tin so that the water rises a quarter of the way up the sides of the jars. Bake for 15-20 mins until the top of the pudding is set but the middle is still squidgy.

6. Remove from the oven and, while still hot, sprinkle the remaining grated chocolate over the tops of each pudding. Leave to cool slightly, then remove the jars from the tin and allow to cool completely. 7. To create your jungle scene, place the desiccated coconut in a bowl and add green food colouring – this will be your grass layer of the jungle. Now sprinkle a layer over the top of the pudding. 8. Roll out a piece of green icing to make a thin ‘worm’ measuring 18cm. Coil this around one of the sticks to create a plant growing up the tree. Skewer this into the chocolate pudding and repeat with 2 more. 9. Add a few jelly snakes to your jungle, coiling in and around the trees to set the scene. Then repeat Using another piece of green icing, cut out 3 leaves to attach to the top of the chocolate sticks. Allow the icing to firm up for about 20 mins, then sit the leaves on top of the rim of the jar.

Fruity Ice Lolly Pens 50ml Sugar-Free Blackcurrant Cordial, 50ml Sugar-Free Orange Cordial, 5 Tsp Each Red And Orange Natural Food Colouring Plus Extra For Painting, 50g Blueberries, 50g Chopped Strawberry & A Few Red Grapes That You Have Already Halved. 1. Pour each cordial into a separate jug, and add the corresponding food colouring. Stir in 100ml water.

3. Freeze for 4 hrs.

Remember To Draw On Clean Paper!

4. Remove the lollies from the moulds and dot extra food colouring onto a dish.

2. Put the blueberries, strawberries and grapes into the ice-lolly moulds and pour the blackcurrant 5. Dip the lollies into the colouring and use to draw mixture up to the brim of 3 moulds. Pour the onmonth paper while enjoying the lolly at the same time! Page 24 | Advertise with us from just £29.25 per orange cordial into the remaining 3 moulds.

Meet The New Vicar At BVC, Ian Sarginson A few months ago, Ian and his family joined Buckshaw Village Church as the new Vicar. We’ve recently caught up with Ian so we can all get to know him a bit better. Here’s how that conversation went... So Ian, great to meet you, can you please tell us a little bit about yourself? I am married to Kate and have a son called Victor, who is nearly 1. I was brought up in the North East (Teesside) but have spent most of the last 20 years in the North West. Aside from the job that I do, I am enthusiastic about football, films, food, coffee and the 1990’s. I sometimes play golf and sometimes enjoy it, this really depends on how I do! What first attracted you to join our Village? Many things! When I first visited, it was like nowhere I had been before. Aesthetically it is very nice and everything seemed thoughtfully designed. It was however the people of our Church that helped me realise that this is where I wanted to be. There was and still is such an excitement about the church and also a desire to serve the people of Buckshaw in practical and positive ways. How do you feel you’ve settled in here? I feel that I have settled in really well. The people I have met have been very friendly, everything I need is close by, yet in a few minutes I can be walking through forests and streams. I am loving life on the village. Is there such thing as a typical working day? It’s pretty varied! Most days will involve some level of admin and there’s always meetings, whether it be with church members, teachers, baptism enquiries, funeral directors etc.

Communication plays a part on most days too. We try to keep people updated on what we are doing through social media and emails. There will also be some preparation for services, such as writing sermons. BVC are always on-hand to help organise lots of community events. Have you anything coming up that we can look forward to? Yes, it’s something that we love to do and are keen to develop! I absolutely loved the Jubilee picnic. The weather was awful, so we mainly stayed inside but the atmosphere was great, especially after two years of such events not happening. We are currently looking at ideas for new events and how we can develop the ones that we already do. Watch this space (and our Facebook page) for dates and details of upcoming events including the Christmas programme which includes the light switch on. That all sounds amazing! What’s the best way for our readers to stay up-to-date with everything that’s going on at BVC? The best way is to come along on a Sunday morning at 10:00am at Unity Place Community Centre and get involved. We also have a Facebook page and a website that have all of the information we think you will need. If there is something that isn’t on there, get in touch and we’ll do our best to help. Let’s finish with some quick-fire questions: What’s your favourite thing about the job? The opportunities to meet people in a variety of contexts. One day I can be welcoming people to a church service,

It really is a privilege. What’s your all-time favourite film? Rocky What did you want to be when you were younger? A footballer or a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle

DO YOU RUN A BUSINESS & WANT TO PROMOTE IT TO OUR READERS?

You’re on a desert island, you can take one person and three things - the items all have to fit into a rucksack, what are you taking? I would take my wife, Kate, and my three things would be my son Victor (he can still fit in a rucksack), my phone (with solar panel charger) and a decent coffee.

Let’s All Stay Safe & Have Fun In The Sun I hope you are all enjoying the weather and getting out to make the most of it. When there was a similar hot, dry spell a couple of years ago, we were still in a strict lockdown and stuck indoors, so it’s wonderful to be able to make the most of it now. However, and I don’t want to put a dampener on things, when it does get hot and humid, we need to be careful to stay healthy. In England alone, there are on average 2,000 heat related deaths every year and that figure rises if there’s been a heatwave. The main risks posed by a heatwave are dehydration, overheating and heatstroke. Some are more vulnerable than others but those who are especially vulnerable are older people, those who have a serious or long term illness such as a heart, kidney or lung condition, babies, those with drug or alcohol issues or those who spend a lot of time outside or in hot places. Firstly, I’d ask people to check on the elderly and those with health conditions, especially if they live alone, to ensure they stay cool and hydrated. Secondly, we should all try to stay cool indoors if possible, and keep our home cool by closing curtains in rooms that face the sun. If you have to go out on a very hot day, stay in the shade if you can, especially between 11am and 3pm, drink plenty of fluids and avoid excess alcohol.

Dr N J Muttucumaru,

Buckshaw Village Surgery Apply sunscreen regularly and wear a wide brimmed hat, and if you are travelling anywhere, take plenty of water with you. Importantly, never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially young children or animals. But even with these precautions, very hot weather can still be dangerous, and if you or someone else feels unwell with a high temperature, it may be heat exhaustion or heatstroke. The signs of heat exhaustion include a headache, dizziness and confusion, loss of appetite and feeling sick, excessive sweating, cramps in the arms, legs and stomach and extreme thirst. Children may also become floppy and sleepy. If someone is showing signs of heat exhaustion, move them to a cool place, get them to lie down and raise their feet slightly and to drink plenty of water or rehydration drinks. You should also cool their skin by spraying or sponging them with cool water and fanning them. Most people should start to feel better within 30 minutes, but if they do not improve, especially if they are having trouble breathing or lose consciousness, call 999 as they will need medical help. All this information might seem a little scary and the last thing I want to do is stop you enjoying our summer. If we follow these precautions, we can all enjoy ourselves. Have fun and stay safe!

The Plans Are Now In To Transform Chorley Chorley Council have submitted a bid to government for a ‘once in a generation’ opportunity to transform three key sites in Chorley. These schemes will reshape and refresh the town centre as well as providing long term benefits for the community and to help support Chorley’s economy. The proposals will be supported by £20m from the second round of the Levelling Up Funding if the bid is successful, with three schemes being put forward: • Development of a civic square and associated infrastructure on the former Buzz Bingo site and Cleveland Street car park. Currently a temporary car park but could include a focal point for town centre events, gardens, units to accommodate retail and restaurant businesses as well as apartments, a hotel and multi-level parking. • Redevelopment of the Bengal Street depot site. Used as a Council depot at the moment, proposals include a commercial unit and stylish apartments providing a much improved approach to the town centre and a potential catalyst for other investment in that area. • United Reform Church Hollinshead Centre and public realm changes to the Union St area. Plans include upgrading the ancillary building to the rear of the church to create a multi-use space, along with

green links to the Bengal St development, additional access to Hollinshead Street car park and improved links from Union St to Astley Park. A spokesperson for the council says: “Whilst it would have been great to put forward other schemes in the Borough as well, unfortunately the tight timescales for delivery mean that we need to hit the ground running with schemes that are ready to go and these schemes all fit that criteria. The scheme delivery costs equate to around £44m, of which £20m will be from the Levelling Up Fund bid if successful. Funding for the remainder of the project will be reviewed once the outcome of the bid is known. We’ll find out in Autumn whether the funding bid has been successful, and people will get chance to have their say as things progress.” We have included a few images to show you how the Civic Square, Bengal Street depot site and United Reform Church Hollinshead Centre could look.
