Happy New Year – We’re Joining SWAN! In late January, Green Hills Public Library District will become the newest member of the SWAN library consortium! What does this mean for you? Most importantly, you’ll have access to the entire SWAN catalog, which includes over 8.5 million items. You can also expect easier checkouts at other SWAN libraries and less waiting for popular materials, among other things. Another change will be in the appearance of our online catalog. Luckily, SWAN uses the same catalog interface as Green Hills, so your experience using the new online catalog will be familiar.

Library staff have been working behind the scenes to get everything ready. You may notice a few changes in the days leading up to our migration at the end of January, but don’t fret—our staff are available to answer your questions and you’ll receive the same great service you always have.

Winter Reading Monday, January 21–Saturday, February 23 Youth (ages 2+) and adults of all ages are invited to sign up for the Winter Reading Program! Log your reading to earn tickets for a chance to win one of our grand prizes. Readers ages 2–17 will receive weekly prizes. Grand prize tickets can be picked up at the Youth or Adult Services Desks.

announcements Local Author Meet & Greet Calling All Authors Are you looking for an opportunity to share your work and meet with other authors? Join us for our 2019 Local Author Meet & Greet, a day devoted to celebrating authors in the Chicagoland area on Saturday, April 27 from 1–4pm.

How many of us make New Year Resolutions and stick to them? I stopped making resolutions a few years ago, when I realized by the spring that I wasn’t keeping up with them! So now, I just tell myself to try harder with my diet, exercise, and generally try to be better in all aspects. If you are looking for a healthier lifestyle this year, we are here to help! On January 28, we are offering a class on demystifying those terms we hear all the time: GMO, non GMO, gluten-free, and more.

If you enjoyed our Palos Reads event last September when we learned about the silent movie era, be sure to join us on February 22 for the Golden Age of Hollywood with Martina Mathisen as she portrays Hollywood’s gossip columnist, Louella Parsons.

Last, but certainly not least, I am delighted to share with you that the Library is joining the SWAN (System Wide Automation Network) Consortium. With over 96 member libraries and 8.5 million physical items in the consortium, now is the right time to join. Some of the benefits you can look forward to: placing holds directly in the SWAN catalog, seamless access at other member libraries, and more! This migration is set to take place at the end of January. The entire staff and I are here to help you learn all of the benefits to being in SWAN. Here’s to another exciting year at the Green Hills Library!

Crochet for Charity We have donated a total of 133 baby blankets, 943 pet beds, and 394 hats. This is an ongoing program, so bring in your donations anytime. We will accept items that are already completed or you can check out a bag with all the materials provided. We are always accepting yarn donations as long as the yarn is machine washable. All donations can be given to the Circulation Desk on the 2nd floor of the Library.

Gary Wenstrup will discuss the arc of the Beatles’ career from their development in Liverpool, Beatlemania, psychedelic phase, and finally their dissolution through this audio and visual presentation.
