During the project held in Zakopane, for 8 days we have been a part of something incredible. „It is easy to hate and it is difficult to love. This is how the whole scheme of things works. All good things are difficult to achieve; and bad things are very easy to get.”

WHY DID P.V.E.G. HAPPEN? Living in a peaceful society is a longterm goal, which requires “an understanding of others and their history, traditions and spiritual values” as well as the ability “to implement common projects or to manage the inevitable conflicts in an intelligent and peaceful way.” WHAT ABOUT THE BASIS?

UNESCO’s first Teacher’s Guide on the Prevention of Violent Extremism through education was a document which was the basis of our project within which we implemented its guidelines and recreated a methodology that fit particularly our partner regions.

what did we learn?

competencies and skills such as empathy, knowledge

of

other

cultures,

cultural

sensitivity, understanding of discrimination, acceptance, and communication. Radical thought that does not condone the exercise of violence to further political goals may be seen as normal and acceptable, and be promoted by groups working within the boundaries of the law.

RESPECT FOR DIVERSITY Acknowledging the intrinsic value of diversity stems from the recognition of the universal human rights and fundamental freedoms of others. Respect for diversity also helps to understand contrasting points of view and nurtures empathy and compassion. In our diverse societies, these skills are essential to forge meaningful bonds between people and to identify collective solutions for societal well-being and sustainability.

Learning about human rights promotes a culture of non-violence and nondiscrimination and fosters feelings of respect and tolerance. An education that encourages a better understanding of human rights also enables critical learning and debate about VE. Thanks to the P.V.E.G. project we already know that:

▶ Human rights are fundamental and universal safeguards. They apply to all human beings

regardless of nationality, gender, origin, religion, language, or any other status. Unlike the rights recognized by a State under domestic law, human rights apply to individuals from all States beyond national borders. Human rights entail both rights and responsibilities. Included in these notions is the idea that every person has the duty to respect the rights of others. For example: respecting each other’s right to freedom of opinion, expression and belief, right to live It is important for young people to understand that people cannot invoke their own rights as justification to violate someone else’s rights. Knowing what is and what is not a human right, as determined by various international conventions, enables learners to challenge false claims and understand what is just and what requires protection

We reached young people effectively, all activities were devoted to prevent violent extremism, build peace, and create a stronger, safer world They were rooted in a candid conversation about the instability and violence with which we currently live.

Compassion, critical thinking, and empathy are difficult competencies to develop, even in a perfect world. Our more daunting challenge is to develop them in world that is brutally unjust. This project has been driven by the need not to add to the library of information on violent extremism but to underscore a message often missed: to reach young people effectively, we must respect their ability to grasp the reality of injustice, intolerance, and inequity. When we encourage critical thinking we must be prepared for the ability of young people to correctly identify and challenge injustice. When we promote empathy and compassion, we must be prepared to discuss the global and local realities young people will point to as instances when they, as individuals, as a community, or as a country, race, or religion, have been treated with indifference and intolerance.

We developed skills for critical thinking and analysis We acquired knowledge and understanding of local, national and global issues and the interconnectedness and interdependency of different countries and populations We recognized forms of manipulation we are aware of stereotypes, prejudices and preconceptions and their impact We are able to distinguish between fact and opinion and question their sources We have been informed about the different faces of violent extremism and other global issues We understand that these issues are complex

We:

acted effectively and responsibly during the conversation expressed oneselves with selfconfidence and addressed conflict positively developed a motivation and willingness to take necessary actions are able to listen with respect to different points of view; to express one’s own opinions; and to evaluate both can express a wish to take responsible action


We experienced a sense of belonging to a common humanity, sharing values and responsibilities based on human rights We developed attitudes of empathy, solidarity and respect for differences and diversity We developed inter-cultural competencies.

We shared core set of values based on human rights We are now respectful of diversity. We are able to recognize emotions that are experienced by another person. We are interested in understanding different people, lifestyles and cultures. We have the ability to effectively and appropriately interact with others who are linguistically and culturally different from oneself.


What happend on this project has changed our lives and our attitudes forever. We became better people. More open. More happy.

Together we are stronger.
