Answer the call of the wild

Wildlife thrills Birdwatchers, bring your binoculars and prepare for twitcher gold. From September to April, see thousands of short-tailed shearwaters return to their Griffiths Island burrows. Watch for hooded plovers nesting along South and East Beach. Take to a network of trails and bird hides to glimpse wetland species at Sandy Cove. At low tide, flock to the river mouth mud flats to spy pelicans and swans. Cruise out to eyeball the seal colony on Lady Julia Percy Island and look for wallabies as you wander the walking trails of Griffiths Island.

Invigorate your spirit in easy-breezy Port Fairy Within a stone’s throw of town, find a handful of stunning beaches that offer all manner of activities. East Beach is patrolled by lifeguards during season, and is ideal for swimming, surfing or sailboarding. Swim at Pea Soup or paddle out to reef breaks beyond. Retreat to Killarney Beach for a family-friendly vibe and a chance to laze away the day with your toes in the sand. Go fly a kite or dive into something new with a surfing lesson or a stand-up paddle boarding session.

Port Fairy – Warrnambool Rail Trail Hop on your bike or pull on your walking shoes and explore this trail traversing 37km of rural landscapes. It’s a roomy three metres wide with flat and gently undulating terrain. On your way, soak up Irish heritage at Koroit and skirt the north side of a 25,000 year old volcano (Tower Hill).

Catch of the day Climb aboard a chartered fishing boat and head ocean-bound for your own catch of the day. The sea and waterways around Port Fairy teem with fish including snapper, bream, whiting, salmon and brown trout. Try your luck on land: dangle a line in the Moyne River or off the jetty.

Climb Australia’s most significant lighthouse (1848) to experience awesome views 90m above the wild Southern Ocean. Explore our Cultural Centre for insight into local indigenous ways, artefacts and bush tucker plants. Consistently ranked within the 25 best public access courses in Australia this classic links course winds its way through unspoilt sand dunes and provides spectacular views of the Southern Ocean. The gently rolling sand dunes of Port Fairy Golf Links have been largely unaltered by man, only mown in order to define fairways and rough, giving rise to a wonderful natural ‘feel’. Golf at Port Fairy is typical of the great Scottish courses, St Andrews, Troon and Carnoustie. Golfers who have never experienced playing these courses should take the opportunity to visit for a unique golfing experience. The Pro Shop provides all your golfing needs to enjoy the experience.
