Do you act, sing, or dance?

Have you been on a stage?

A stage is a spot where people perform. It can be any shape or size.

On a stage in Russia, dancers put on the Cinderella ballet.

The Bolshoi Theatre is in Moscow, Russia.

People sit in boxes along the walls of the grand hall. Friends can chat between acts.

The design of the hall helps sound travel far. People can hear from the very top boxes.

One stage in Japan is constructed from trees planted long ago. It has its own roof.

A pine tree is painted on the back wall.

At the back of the stage, people use flutes and drums.

The National Noh Theatre is in Tokyo, Japan.

In front, others dance and act.

Some use thick silk costumes or masks.

The Red Rocks Amphitheatre is in Morrison, Colorado.

A stage can be built into a hillside. At one U.S. theater, the “walls� are sandstone rocks.

They have fossils inside them!

By day, people use the spot for visiting. They jog or have picnic lunches on the benches.

Later, bands take the stage to sing and play songs.

In Austria, one stage is built in a lake! It is lifted up on poles called piles.

People sit in a grandstand on the side of the lake.

For each play, the stage has a new shape: a wall connecting two towers, a book, some dragons, or a set of bones.

No stage? No problem! You can stand on a box or jump from a stump. Dance in the water or sing on a swing.

The world is your stage.

More “All the world’s a stage,” wrote William Shakespeare more than 400 years ago. Many people call Shakespeare the greatest English writer who ever lived. Many of his plays premiered at the Globe Theatre in London, England.

Shakespeare and his theater company had the Globe Theatre built in 1599. The theater had so many sides, it was almost round. A roof sheltered three stories of seating. In addition, people could stand in the uncovered empty space around the stage. This was called the pit.

The Globe was a popular site until it was torn down in 1644. About 350 years later, a group built a new Globe Theatre. They did this by studying the site of the old theater and other buildings from its time.

Today, visitors can see Shakespeare’s plays in a theater much like the one where they were first performed.
