“We try our best to prioritize and get to those issues in the quickest manner we can,” he says. During warm weather months, the department turns its attention to pavement preservation including patching and crack sealing, in addition to repaving. Twelve to 15 roads are resurfaced annually. In 2023 that volume of work equated to 7,000 tons of asphalt. “Many other municipalities don’t pave their own roads,” Montgomery says. “Instead, they sub out the labor, which makes it very costly for their city. Our program is all done in-house, which

saves the city and taxpayers money every year.” With the arrival of fall, the crew prepares for what lies ahead. The trucks used to pave roads are outfitted with snowplows, salt spreaders and liquid deicers. They travel throughout 18 designated zones in the city to clear all roads while prioritizing main routes to keep traffic moving. In significant storm events, the team uses a GPS system to pinpoint areas critically affected by flooding. Working closely with other city departments, Montgomery and his staff schedule

o matter the season, North Ridgeville’s Public Works Director Jon Montgomery and his team are out in full force to ensure what needs to run smoothly will. “Our department is a seven-in-one department: streets, water, sewer, stormwater, wastewater treatment, city garage and grounds maintenance,” he explains. “Basically, any infrastructure that is above or below ground, we maintain or service in some way.” He notes that the department has 68 employees to the city’s 37,000 residents.

Providing Excellence in Senior Care

The O’Neill family has been providing quality skilled nursing, rehabilitation, and long-term care for more than 60 years in Cleveland’s west side communities. Our goal is to achieve the highest level of function during a therapy stay and to have a safe return home. Our Assisted Living suites also allow seniors to live in a community and enjoy our activities while receiving exceptional healthcare services. Additionally, for comfort and convenience, a dialysis center is attached to O’Neill Healthcare North Ridgeville.

Wastewater Works Many of us don’t give a second thought to the dirty water that swirls down our sinks and tubs — much less what we flush down our toilets — day in and day out. But Corey Timko does. As superintendent of the French Creek

Wastewater Treatment Plant, he oversees water purification for the communities of North Ridgeville, Avon and Sheffield — which amounts to 7 million gallons per day, 24/7. “Everything that goes down your drain, we get,” Timko says with a laugh, “and that doesn’t include the water we recycle from storm sewers during heavy rains and melting snow.” Currently, the plant disinfects water through the use of an activated sludge process in which aeration and biological nutrients accelerate the decomposition process that takes place in nature and breaks down bacteria. What’s left is clear water that’s treated and sent on to Lake Erie via the French Creek Stream and the Black River before being pulled from the lake and made potable by the communities’ respective water departments. For the most part, Timko says, the plant can handle just about anything biodegradable we discard down our sewer pipes. But it’s other items that find their way there that cause consternation. “Through the years, we’ve encountered plastic pipes and toys — and even bricks that were once used to construct sewers — that are tough to deal with,” he says. “But rags and even flushable wipes that people discard rope together as they tumble down and wind around themselves. That really clogs up the process.”

projects that include stormwater retention, rehabilitation of structures and cleaning of major and minor ditches. Water and sewer personnel ensure the reliability of the city’s water system through replacement and repairs of water lines, valves, hydrants and pumping stations. Routine sampling and testing are critical to ensuring water is safe to drink and falls below thresholds for bacteria, lead and certain chemicals. Other responsibilities include water pressure testing, cleaning catch basins and sanitary sewer lines and maintaining lift stations. Crews mark utility locations that are requested by OUPS, numbering 5,000 locations per year. Grounds maintenance staff make needed repairs to city buildings and provide mowing and weeding in the city’s parks and municipal cemeteries. “We do very detailed mowing in the cemeteries,” Montgomery says. “We were subbing the work out, but we took it over to maintain a higher level of professionalism. Loved ones are there, and if the grounds are not maintained properly up to a certain standard, we feel that’s unacceptable.”

The Able Not Label shop empowers students with special needs. By Linda Feagler

orth Ridgeville’s Able Not Label shop exudes a sense of pride and purpose as 17 students with special needs work as a team with their support staff to prep and cut vinyl, weed the design and then use a heat press to adhere the design onto apparel, signs, pet bowls, mugs and other merchandise. When finished, items are checked, price-tagged and ready for sale in the adjoining store or through online orders. Made possible by a series of grants, the Able Not Label shop celebrated its grand opening on June 29. The student-run business provides innovative ways for kids to get creative while sharpening skills that include money and inventory management, folding clothing, cleaning, quality control and customer service — tasks that will transfer into many aspects of life after graduation. “At the high school, we’re dedicated to teaching vocational training and life skills that lead to hands-on learning for students with intensive needs,” says Caitlin Carlo, intervention specialist for the North Ridgeville City School District and the shop’s director. “Able Not Label is a new way of showing the community that our students are capable of so much and to focus on their abilities — not just look at them as students with disabilities,” Carlo says.

All sales are accompanied by a thankyou note that reads: “Each item is handmade from the heart. It may have imperfections, which makes it unique, one of a kind, like each of us.” “Everyone involved with it is doing what they’re doing out of the goodness of their hearts for the future of these children,” says Superintendent Roxann Caserio. Proceeds from sales fund community outings such as meals out and Lake Erie Crushers games. Each excursion is designed to help students practice etiquette and socialization skills. “We have a fan base rooting for us who gives us opportunities to create new programs and enhance existing ones,” says Jason Sewell, Able Not Label’s co-director. “That feels great.” Spirit wear sporting the schools’ Ranger logo is very popular, as are items from the shop’s Inclusion Collection — with such poignant phrases as “Differences are Beautiful,” “Choose to Include” and “Radiate Kindness.” Twelfth grader Cayden Platsky sums up what Able Not Label means to him: “We spend our money on field trips. Sky Zone was my favorite field trip. We went to celebrate our hard work and for reaching our goal. It was fun!” Able Not Label shop 34100 Center Ridge Road, nrcs.net/domain/249

The city’s new master plan is in the works. As North Ridgeville civic leaders look to the future, they’re inviting those who have a vested interest in the city to share their vision of what it can become. Steps are being taken to draft a new master plan that will guide a host of actions including updates to land use regulations and increased economic development efforts. “The last time the plan was updated was 2009,” says Kim Lieber, North Ridgeville’s director of planning and development. “So many aspects of our lives changed since then. Now is clearly the time to focus on new initiatives.” A diverse, resident-led steering committee was formed last fall to guide the process, known as Ridgeville Ready, followed by in-person and virtual community meetings to gather ideas from residents, as well as those owning property and businesses in the city. To date, popular topics for consideration include the desire to attract new retail businesses and restaurants to North Ridgeville, a focus on new employment centers to provide a stronger tax base and the creation of a vibrant town center. “I am very encouraged by the community interest we’ve seen and the participation at our Ridgeville Ready events over the course of the master planning process,” says Mayor Kevin Corcoran. “The level of involvement has shown how invested our residents are in ensuring a positive future for our city.” — LF

Station Innovation

Here’s what to expect f rom the city’s new police station. North Ridgeville’s new police station reinforces the city’s dedication to the safety of all who live, work and visit. In late December/early January, the city is scheduled to celebrate the completion of the new $12 million, 21,408-square-foot facility. In November 2021, voters passed a 0.81-mill bond issue to generate funding for construction of the facility, which is being designed by Architectural Vision Group of Westlake. “Our current station has an original section that’s more than 40 years old,” says North Ridgeville Police Chief Michael Freeman. “Obviously, technology and police work have changed through time. The new station will take care of our needs moving forward.” A key feature Freeman knows will be much appreciated by visitors is the station’s spacious lobby that will give all who enter a bit more space and privacy. A separate evidence building will contain an evidence locker, a dog kennel to house lost canines and space for patrol cars. — LF

Glow Fitness Studio The radiant sheen that clients achieve after a session at Glow Fitness Studio comes from more than just the sweat and endorphins — it’s also created by the sense of community at the gym. “All of our clients get along and have fun and support each other. It’s been neat to see them all change their lives by getting fit and healthy as one big group,” says Jessica Beckett, co-owner and head trainer. Founded in October 2022, the circuit training gym offers high-intensity interval training and classes such as a fight class (kickboxing), energy class (cardio), strong class (weight based), athletic (combination of cardio and weights), flow (yoga and Pilates) and kids’ classes. “Our classes are excellent for all fitness levels, and our incredible trainer Jessica can modify anything to suit your needs,” says Brittany Brookbank, co-owner of Glow Fitness Studio. “Many have compared our gym to a video game-like atmosphere with the interactive floor and wall. The workouts go so quickly, and every class is a different workout. It never gets boring.” Each 50-minute class can accommodate 16 people and is set up with eight stations. Anyone can attend classes by becoming a member or by purchasing individual classes. 39245 Center Ridge Road, 440-406-8002, glowfitnessstudionr.com

TropiCLE Plants sees plants as more than just a product — they’re a passion, according to owner Brian Martin, who grew up helping in the backyard garden. Martin worked in sales and marketing for a decade before realizing he wasn’t happy with what he was selling, so he decided to sell plants. Opened in December 2022, the storefront specializes in indoor tropical plants, many of them canopy plants, which grow under tall trees and receive filtered sunlight. “The plants aren’t the type that would need to have full sun, so they’re perfect for a home or a business,” Martin says. “You can have a brown thumb and grow these plants because they typically grow in very harsh conditions.” The bulk of the business is providing corporate plantscaping, but TropiCLE Plants’ business model doesn’t stop at selling the plants. Customers can also sign up for a subscription to have their plants maintained and replaced if necessary. Looking ahead, Martin says he hopes to break into the event sector and provide plants for weddings, trade shows and more.

Customers can expect to find more than a burger at Between the Bun. With a pool table, table games and more, the venue promises fun for all ages, according to owners Lacia and John Rutherford. In addition to almost 10 gourmet burgers, the restaurant serves up pregame snacks, salads, chicken wraps, sandwiches and more. Lacia Rutherford opened the business in August 2022 in what used to be a bowling alley. “We wanted to have somewhere where people can come hang out, have a good time and be with their kids,” Lacia says. “Families can have a nice meal, and the kids can also go play and let their parents have some downtime.” John Rutherford adds that the games allow kids to move around instead of being stuck at the table or scrolling on their phones. “John and I are really in it,” Lacia says. “We both cook, serve drinks, make specialty cocktails and talk with customers.” Looking ahead, Between the Bun will open a party room for birthday and graduation celebrations, business outings and more.

EQ Technologies Michael Schaffer and Jason Frindt went from rivals to partners and friends when they teamed up to create EQ Technologies. “Schaffer put a lot of time and energy into building the company, and I brought the certifications and qualifications on the technical side,” Frindt says. Founded in 2013, EQ Technologies specializes in audio, surveillance, video and smart home technologies as well as home theater installation and equipment, all with minimal visible wires. EQ moved to North Ridgeville in 2021. Schaffer serves as the principal owner, while Frindt is partial owner and acts as chief technology and financial officer. “We’re at the bleeding edge of technology,” Schaffer says. “Our customers end up with simple technology with a nice, clean look. We have a great team of people who can come into people’s homes and help them understand the equipment.” EQ Technologies engineers much of the technology from scratch, working with builders and developers early in the process. It also offers similar services to small businesses. “With these systems, people forget they are in the background and part of their day-to-day life, but we’re in there early when the building begins,” Frindt says. 34910 Center Ridge Road, 216-440-6179, EQTechnologies.com

What began as an occasional partnership between Andrew Edreff and Jenso Soto at events such as the Lorain International Festival has evolved into a full-fledged pizza shop: Smash Pizza Kitchen. After continuing to team up and cook at pop-up events, the pair eventually opened a food truck. They then started providing food for brick-and-mortars around the area before moving into a designated building in February 2023. A rarity these days, the shop serves what it does best — pizza and only pizza. “We only do pizza, but we do really good pizzas,” Jenso says, calling out the Dilly Dilly pickle pizza, a fan favorite. “For us, we’re more about cooking the food and making it ourselves versus cracking open bags of frozen stuff (like wings and chicken tenders) and selling it to people. When you add too many things to your menu, you lose sight of who you are.” Smash Pizza Kitchen is a smallbatch kitchen and items don’t stay on the menu for too long. “That’s hard with the demand of customers sometimes, but when you’re touching the ingredients and cooking it yourself, you put your passion into it, and that makes it special,” Edreff says. 7054 Avon Belden Road, smashpizzakitchen.com (order online via the website or walk in and place an order)

KLM Home Decor KLM Home Decor became etched into creation when owner Elysia Pasenow started making signs as gifts while she stayed at home to care for her son, who has special needs. “From there, more people started asking me for them,” says Pasenow, who started the business with her husband Jason during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I started to do more custom orders and going to more craft shows.” The Pasenow family opened a storefront about a year ago. Jason and Elysia’s daughter also helps in the store. KLM now creates personalized signs, custom wood flags and even floating shelving. “People come to us with all sorts of things they want,” Elysia says. “We made a bowling rack for someone. We’ve done toyboxes.” Once a customer decides on an item, the turnaround time is usually two to three weeks. KLM also offers paint parties and open time slots for painting and crafting and storefront spaces for vendors with handmade items and young artisans. It also sells items crafted by the special needs students at North Ridgeville High School, with 100% of the money going back to them. “We’ve always been about encouraging everyone to be crafty and artsy,” Elysia says. 6287 Lear Nagle Road, 440-654-3332, facebook.com/klmhomedecor

FACES OF NORTH RIDGEVILLE

Skunk Fest Pint-sized gilded tiaras perch atop furry heads marked with a distinct stripe. Pet skunks are also decked out in festive garb like you’d find at the pet store at Halloween. This is Skunk Fest in North Ridgeville, and it’s a pastime and passion for resident Deborah Cipriani, who acquired her first pet skunk in 2000.

HEATHER KAESGEN North Ridgeville Community Care In times of need, North Ridgeville Community Care is a supportive, helping hand offering food, essential supplies, household items and financial assistance for expenses like utilities. In many ways, the nonprofit helps keep the lights on when life transitions and circumstances pull the rug out.

DEBORAH CIPRIANI

Since then, she partnered with local veterinarian Dr. Frank Krupka to start a national rescue, Skunk Haven, along with starting Skunk Fest to help fundraise for the pets. During the annual event held the second Saturday of September, you’ll see license plates from across the country at South Central Park. “People come from as far as the United Kingdom and Holland for skunk costume contests, the most talented skunk, best detective — and we crown a queen and king at the end,” Cipriani says. Visitors can take a picture with a skunk or pet a skunk for a donation. (Their scent sacs are removed at four to six weeks of age — so no spray risk.) As for Cipriani, she maintains state and federal permits to operate the pet skunk rescue from her home. Some of the pet skunks that reside at her home include Sophie, Charlie, Stella and Cannoli. But, “they are not the perfect pet for everybody,” Cipriani says of the animals who have been known to get into cupboards and refrigerators. “You have to reorganize your life for a skunk.”

FACES OF NORTH RIDGEVILLE Heather Kaesgen began volunteering for the organization about 10 years ago. “We always donated to Community Care at Christmastime and for food drives, but I wanted to get more involved,” says the North Ridgeville native. She took over as Community Care’s CEO, just prior to the pandemic. “For those following years, it has been, ‘How do we help as many people? How do we feed everyone in need?’ Because there really was a problem acquiring and distributing food. We worked around the clock to keep this place going, because we didn’t want our most vulnerable in the city to not have food or access to supplies.” Kaesgen quips, “My claim to fame is that we never ran out of toilet paper at Community Care.” Now, she is spearheading a five-year plan to target “silent sufferers,” namely older adults who humbly age without asking for help when they really need it. “I just want to be sure everyone knows we are here,” she says. “And we accept monetary donations, food, clothing, household items — all to help our clients.”

DARYL AND KAREN EDWARDS Shannon Edwards Memorial Fund Shannon Edwards’ legacy shines on in ways that inspire creativity, empower students with special needs and provide kids with tools they need to succeed. The late daughter of Daryl and Karen Edwards was born with a rare genetic

disease called nemaline myopathy, a musculoskeletal development disorder that ultimately took her life in 2001 as a fifth grader at the former Wilcox Elementary School. Shannon’s involvement in the special needs community at North Ridgeville City Schools seeded an idea for the Edwards to start a grant in her name. The Shannon Edwards Memorial Fund is one of North Ridgeville City Schools’ Endowment Funds and is orchestrated through the Community Foundation of Lorain County. Recently, it provided startup funds for the student-run North Ridgeville High School business, Able Not Label, to open a storefront on Center Ridge Road. “They learn life skills that carry into their futures, and the grant helped pay for some initial equipment they needed,” Karen says. With the fund, she adds, “We can still talk about her, people can still give us their memories and her spirit lives on.” — Kristen Hampshire

We make football helmets. At Riddell, we are also a part of something bigger. When we send a helmet down the line, we know that helmet is going to an athlete to protect them on the field, while they’re playing the game we all love. Come join our team.
