The history of the propriety
Firstly it belonged to the noble family of the Marquis Monaldi, who erected a large house surrounded by beautiful gardens. In the 20th century the property passed on to the Bartocci Family until the ownership passed to the “Congregazione di Carità di Perugia”. In 1930, Count Francesco Maria Guardabassi bought the property and employed Ugo Tarchi, a famous Roman architect, to refurbish it.
It was at this point that the villa got the name of Villa Torre di Pila, and went on becoming a property renowned for its luxury, appointments and splendid gardens. At the beginning of XIX century, the villa was rented to the Bulgari Family, the famous jewelers of Rome. Because of the Villa’s renown and importance, along with its central strategic locations, for a time during the war it became the headquarters for the German Army, and later for the Allied Troops.
During these two occupations the villa was stripped of most of its household furnishings and abandoned, as happened to many other properties across Italy. In 1989, after the house lost a loving owner, the property was bought by Petrini family, who have spent years returning Villa la Torre di Pila to its original splendor with great enjoyment.
The historic residence is situated in a convenient position very close to the main roads even if in a panoramic location. The villa is just few minutes away from Perugia as well as Todi, Assisi, Spoleto, Gubbio and Solomeo (where the famous designer and entrepreneur Mr. Brunello Cucinelli has his headquarters). It is also an easy ride to Siena and other Tuscany villages (San Casciano dei Bagni, Pienza, Chianciano Terme and Montepulciano). It is also accessible to Rome and Florence trough highways and is served by an airport.
La Torre di Pila, together with its farm houses, other outbuildings, the Italian gardens and the park that surrounds the villa, have all been declared of particular historic interest by the Beni Ambientali Architettonici Artistici e Storici dell’Umbria. Therefore the propriety is protected and safeguarded by special laws.
It was the Architect Tarchi, who gathered inspiration from 16th and 17th century Roman and Tuscan palaces to design this villa, giving a dramatic front faรงade that looks out on formal gardens. From stone terraces that grace the second story it is possible to admire the breadth of the entire property and the dramatic hillsides and farm fields beyond with a view that goes as far as Assisi, Perugia and Lake Trasimeno. The land that surrounds the villa is decorated by formal Italian gardens, a park with many fountains, a swimming pool, and a small beautiful amphitheatre.
The park-like grounds are rich with a vast variety of evergreen and deciduous trees, including box-trees, citrus trees, laurel and lilacs, maritime pine trees, bamboos, Lebanon cider trees, palm trees, citrus trees, and magnolias. All of these plants profuse their essences and perfumes everywhere on the property, mingling with those of the lemon trees, the olive trees and hazelnut trees.
The tower Everything is embellished by the XV century tower that houses a perfectly furnished room and a lookout on the top where you can admire the surrounding countryside.
The interior of the Villa
The interior of the Villa is breath-taking in its care of architectural detail and adornment and at the same time it is warm and comfortable. There are numerous ground floor rooms with frescoed walls and ceilings with medieval and classical scenes and a paneled library that is simply exquisite. 17th century hand-painted French doors by De Marchi painter from Perugia, decorated with evocative scenes, enclose the main sitting room.
Almost every room in the house has a majestic marble fireplace. The enclosed sunroom/dining area is paved in hand-painted Deruta majolica and brickwork. The villa, which is part of a 5 hectares park with an Italian garden, consists of a ground floor where there are large living rooms, dining room, a beautiful veranda, kitchen, billiard room and a toilet. A stately staircase leads to the upper floors where there are, on two floors, 8 suites plus a part dedicated to service personnel.
