While fans continue to pack the FedExForum, affectionately known as “The Grindhouse” to cheer on the city’s beloved Memphis Grizzlies, the professional sports scene in Memphis has gotten an extra boost in the past year with new additions to the sports-crazed culture including the United Soccer League’s 901 FC. Memphis is a passionate sports town. Memphis even has more radio sports talk shows than cities twice its size. Many local sports fans were raised on University of Memphis basketball, a program with a strong tradition that twice has been within a victory of an NCAA championship and regularly punches a ticket to the NCAA’s March Madness. In 2013, the University of Memphis began competing in the new American Athletic Conference.
AutoZone Park, at Third and Union in downtown, is not only one of the top stadiums in minor-league baseball but home to the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds and a launching pad for future St. Louis Cardinals stars. In July, Memphis will play host to the FedEx Invitational World Golf Championship. In December, thousands of runners hit city streets for the St. Jude Memphis Marathon, and every Dec. 31st, college football fans flock to Memphis for the annual AutoZone Liberty Bowl.
