ell, I find this month’s letter off to an interesting start. As you can imagine, we all should be hoping and looking for a break in the weather, anticipating warmer temperatures and thinking of riding or rolling down the windows in our rods while going for a drive. The funny thing is, I do not believe any of us really have put away our rides at all this “winter.” It is a warm 70 degrees outside as I enjoy writing this “kick off to the season” letter to everyone. Sunshine in my eyes. Warm weather on my face. It has been one interesting season for sure.

So, what does that mean? Is it going to be so blazing hot this Summer that not a single one of us will be able to take it? Will the mosquitoes of the South take control of our lives and suck every ounce of life from our veins? Ha, just thinking of how great it is now, makes you wonder about tomorrow just a little bit. Anyway, I love the warm air and will take that any day over freezing in the cold. So, bring it on! Keep the sun shining. It’s time to get out and enjoy another great season and all it has to offer. This March brings us our traditional Rat Rod issue. This year, we are appreciative to bring you not only a great ride, but a true piece of art. Jeff Watt’s of KiloWatts Creations will introduce you to Jezebel. Not only is Jeff a builder, but also an artist making some of the most eclectic pieces from antiques, old parts, and some kilowatts flair! Not only do you get a small look at the latest project, but we debut with Jeff, the first Dashboard Confessional on Garage71,

LETTER Sunday, March 18th at 8PM. After reading this month’s feature, we will take an in depth look at Jeff Watt’s life and how he has arrived where he is today, from features in National magazines, to car builds, to motorcycle masterpieces. Following the on-air documentary, we will air the Sideburners in concert at the Earl. It’s about bringing you the subkulture lifestyle. There is a lot going on with the crew at Grease Inc. There is actually so much, it is impossible to write it all here in my monthly shout-out. We have a great team that live this lifestyle daily. Many have taken notice, but there are a few out there that we have to give some thanks and recognition to at this time. We want to say thank you to High Octane Coffee Company for supporting Grease Inc. and Garage71. ach year, we search that one "rat." We look and search east to west, and sometimes when looking, you find what you are looking for right under your feet. While hosting Hell on Wheels last year, a good friend, who is a builder and an artist, let me know he was bringing his latest project, a 1928 Ford model A sedan. Knowing Jeff Watts of KiloWatts Creations, it had to be a pretty kool project. Sure enough, once she rolled in slow and low, it was over. "Jezebel" stole the show. From a combination of history, tradition, art, and passion, this old girl took best of show, with all her rust and exposed wood.

H

ow well do we ever really know a band? We listen to their music, recite their lyrics, and spend our hard earned money to see them play live and wear their merch, but would we be able call a member’s grandma by her first name, to pick out a pair of shoes for another, or know what one can’t leave home without? Unless we’re super fans, probably not. I mean, we do get to spend intimate moments with them at a show, relating with songs they’ve written, and getting a glimpse into their past. Red Dirt Mountain has done a great job in writing about what they’re going through in the daily grind, or how they grew up, and with these guys, we DO get to know them just by listening to their music. But, I figured we might want a little more. I’ve asked each member the same 13 questions…just wait until you see their answers, each completely different, unfiltered, unedited. A raw and hilarious look into the lives, hearts and minds of one of Atlanta’s most talked about bands. Before we get to those goods, I want to introduce you to the handsome men behind RDM. Scott White (Founder, Lead and Rhythm Guitar, Lead Vocals)- this is Scott’s first band ever! (what a way to start, right?!) He raced

cars professionally, is a mechanic by trade, and owns, The Shop, but his first love was the guitar. Grandma, Iverdale Christopher, taught her grandson a few chords and found out quickly he was and called him, “a blues man”. (You can hear a little more about Iverdale in “Grandma Says” off their latest album “Living on a Borrowed Dime”.) Monroe Slim (Upright and Electric Bass Player, Vocals)- this isn’t Slim’s first band, the man has been around the block a few times in his musical career! Besides him hammering down on stage, Slim spends his day’s working on airplanes and helicopters. “If it has instruments and or radios, I work on it! I ain’t skeered!!” he says. Nick Capitano (drummer)- Nick, also, has been in a few bands. I was surprised to hear he did the metal route for a while before settling into the sledgy, Southern rock groove, but once you see the hair and open vest with no shirt, it totally fits! Capitano fills his days with aviation work, too! He’s not a mechanic, like the rest of the band, but he does…something in aviation! (as much as I’ve asked, he won’t come off it! Guess it’s one of those ‘if I tell you, I’d have to kill you’ deals. Haha!) Now that you have a little taste of who we’re dealing with, let’s pull that tablecloth off, and see what they’ve got underneath the table…

I think because you can really get a feel of who these guys are in life. They won our 2nd Annual Battle of the Bands at Porterdale Bar and Grill, have become a staple for Garage 71 Radio and Grease Magazine Events, have shared the stage with some amazing and well known talent, and are still speaking and acting from their hearts. It takes a real man to admit that his daughter is what gives his life true meaning, or that he’s got a thing for shoes, or that he still uses the Magic 8 Ball to answer tough questions…every one of these guys is a stand up human being. They go to work in the morning, come home in the evening, play like hell any chance they get, but still know the value of what matters most…the music of your everyday life. Not to be bossy, but go grab a copy of their album, Living on a Borrowed Dime; go see them live (St. Patty’s Day weekend at Porterdale Bar and Grill with us!); support the working class musicians!! O

ur first introduction to the "Scumbag" barbers of Rotterdam, Netherlands, was through the grapevine of social media as the resurgence of the gentlemen continues to rise. We launched the column in Grease Inc. to continue to support this dynamic black collar society of working class men that continue to follow the roles of tradition in both social behaviors, as well as grooming. As the focus began to look further in-depth to pockets of the kulture that seemed to be timeless, the Schorem Barbers were rumored to be that shop that was sought to emulate or be a part of. Located in Rotterdam, Netherlands, the Schorem Barbershop was founded by Bertus and Leen. The shop is ultimately simple in nature. It is a place where men are men. Talk is about business, whiskey, and women. It is where boys learn about becoming a man. It's about looking your best. It's about attitude. The barbers are not traditionalists in the nature of what history would portray. Many of the barbers are skate punks. Many of them are

referred to as street people. One of the barbers has spent considerable time in jail. None the less, they are all barbers now, and great ones at that. The shop has a line out the door from open until close. The interior is an atmosphere of whiskey and cigarettes. It is more a bar kulture than what many would think today as a gentleman's barbershop. The Schorem Barbers focus on the classic cuts of barbering with quiffs, flat tops, fades, and razor fades. They have no interest in trends. They only have a focus of providing the best classic cut possible. They don't follow modern trends in styles of cuts or products. They also don't select the type of clientele that walks through their door. From the Mayor of Rotterdam to psychobillies, punks, gentlemen, vagabonds to ruffians, the craft of the Scumbag Barber is one of pride and appreciation of the skill to be a great barber. Anyone interested in learning the trade can make the trek across the pond and learn first hand on how to become a part of the scumbag life. There is only one rule, no egos. The barbers of Schorem have taken men from the gutters and given them a skill that not only feeds them, but cultivates a sense of pride.

We had the pleasure meeting and hanging out with Michael Martin this winter. Michael is what as known as a Scumbassodor. Michael performed some training at the 17th W. North Street Parlor on the infamous Reuzel products and signature cuts. Located on a regular basis, Michael resides as Master Barber at Parlour and Juke in Nashville, TN. The Scumbassador has taken the time to go through the actual training in Rotterdam at Schorem and learned they style of classic barbering in addition of learning what it means to be a barber. As an outsider looking in and having the opportunity to see what it takes as far as skill and years of passion and dedication to a trade, you can see why so many people look at being a "scumbag" is actually a compliment rather than insult. The Schorem Barbers look at their shop as their family. From their sweetheart wives to their closest friends, they believe that Schorem belongs to Rotterdam. Though, from time to time, Bertus and Leen do make their way to the states and stop in to visit and support the shops that support them and their product line, Reuzel. We

even heard that they will be back in Nashville for a visit this April and the Rowdy Gents of 17th W. North Street Parlor are planning to make the trip to catch up with these chaps. What continues for some to be a trend itself, for others it's a lifestyle. The Scumbags of Rotterdam prove that no matter what, men are men. There are common interests and bonds that make up the being of man, just as the same for a lady. Though, being a "scumbag" doesn't mean you don't take pride in yourself, in fact it means the opposite. Check out the complete line of Reuzel products at the 17th W. T

he weather is getting warmer and it looks like the perfect day for a cruise, time to dust off that bike you stashed in the corner and hit the road. Go unplug that battery tender, top off the tires, and let her rip... What is a battery tender? A battery tender is what makes the difference between pressing the start button and the bike fires right up and having to grab the car keys to run and buy another new battery. Did you ever wonder why your car battery lasts so much longer than your motorcycle battery? Your car probably doesn’t sit several days a week without running and doesn’t get stashed away for most of the colder months. Automotive batteries life span is cut in half or greater when they are not operated very often so they are maintained at a full charge. A battery tender keeps a small amperage charge on the bike all the time when you plug it in after your rides and is safe to leave plugged in for months on end.
