Growing in His service

A LETTER from the PRESIDENT

Each day as I walk across campus, I am humbled by your generosity and support of our efforts. Your sacrificial giving and prayers enable us to offer Christ-centered higher education.  With your help we have accomplished major strategic goals this past year.   • Oakland City University achieved 10 year accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), for the first time in our school’s history. • OCU achieved continued accreditation from NCATE, IACBE, and ATS. • Oakland City University was approved by the HLC to offer 20% of our academic programs online. • The HLC removed the stipulation on the number of graduate/master’s degrees offered at Oakland City University. • Once again, OCU sent another 16 people to Honduras who worked at the General Baptist Faith Home (orphanage) in June. • OCU completed a formal entrance to the University located on Highway 57. • In May 2012, Oakland City University graduated 515 students; graduates who are prepared to meet the challenges of our world.   With the support of friends like you, Oakland City University is training servant leaders to become productive citizens for our nation and world.  We are pleased to recognize the generosity of our friends. Enclosed you will find our Honor Roll of donors.

“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.” – Psalm 100:4 (KJV)

There are multiple categories to the Honor Roll: annual, lifetime, and planned giving. Hundreds of men and women, just like you, embrace financial stewardship and support OCU. On behalf of the trustees, administration, faculty, staff, and most importantly, students, I say Thank You! In His Service,

Ray G. Barber, D.Min., ’85, ‘88 President

construction has begun:

restoring the chapel

Anyone who has ever spent time on the Oakland City University campus has been inspired by the simple beauty of its most unique structure, the University Chapel. If you were a student here, perhaps you have warm memories of convocations you attended at the Chapel. Perhaps you were married here, or maybe it was here that you experienced a “still, small voice that gave you direction in your life. Since its construction in 1968, the Chapel (now known as Provance Memorial Chapel, in memory of Mrs. Jean Provance, a generous supporter and benefactor of the University) has served as a spiritual center for the OCU experience. Students from all backgrounds have discovered the Chapel a place for worship, for meditation, and for the quiet contemplation of their Creator. As one of only a few original buildings on campus, this iconic structure represents the purpose and Christian tradition of Oakland City University. But time has taken its toll. The combined forces of nature have eroded the structural foundation of the building, and the repair will require demolition and replacement of concrete walls, slabs and retaining walls. The interior is also in need of renovation. Flooring needs repair, restrooms need to be modernized, and the entire interior needs an overall facelift. If left unattended, these problems will cause the Chapel to deteriorate to the point where it will not be salvageable. If we act now, however, we can restore the Chapel to its former glory, and it will continue to serve as a spiritual beacon to OCU students for generations to come. Please make the decision to give generously today. Your gift of any amount is important in our effort to restore the Chapel. Your tax deductible gift will help preserve a truly unique house of worship that is the heart of a truly unique Christian institution. Approximately $80,000 in gifts and pledges as of 09/01/2012.

online learning: convenience for ocu criminal justice students Continuing a tradition of service begun over a century ago in 1885, Oakland City University now offers fully online degree programs. Adult learners who cannot come to the OCU campus can now complete their academic goals when and where it is most convenient for them to study. OCU offers the Associate of Arts in Religious Studies, the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, and the Master of Business Administration. Courses in these programs run 8-weeks in length. Beginning September 2012, an online Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice will also be offered. Unlike the other three online programs that start during the traditional campus semesters, the CJ program will utilize 5-week long courses that start and stop every 5-week. Mark E. Simpson Ph.D. Coordinator of Online Learning

In all of the online programs each learner uses discussion forums to interact with the instructor and other students. Access to classroom resources is 24/7, allowing students the flexibility to study when it is most convenient for them.

The goal in offering online courses and programs is not to replace the main campus or undermine its classroom experiences. Instead, online learning through OCU is a way to extend the mission of the University to those adults unable to achieve their educational goals on the main campus.

matt & mariah snyder, december 2012 graduates Matt Snyder and Mariah Stutzman began their freshman year in 2008. The Snyders came to Oakland City University because it was a Christian university, close to home and affordable. Without the help of scholarship money, neither student could pursue their educational goals. Matt and Mariah met on campus because “we hung out in the same groups.” They became active in a campus drama team, Good News Players, which ministers to groups all over the country. Matt is majoring in Religious Studies and Business Administration and Mariah is an Elementary Education major. Along the way they fell in love, got married, and recently celebrated their first anniversary. Matt says the best thing about being a married student is: “I don’t have a guy for a roommate!” Last year, they became Residence Hall Directors in Cox Hall, a female dormitory. This summer has been very busy for the Snyders. Their summer vacation from classes has included: serving as members of the Honduras Mission Team from OCU, Matt completed an internship with Onsite OHS, Mariah was employed in the Toyota Children’s Center, and continued service in the Good News Players ministry. Both students will graduate this December after Mariah student teaches this fall. Additionally, they have held work-study jobs on campus. Mariah comments about OCU: “with a small campus, getting to your work-study job is not a problem; it is always just a few blocks away.” The Snyders have potential full-time jobs through their internships this summer. When asked about their long term goals, both immediately replied “international missions”. Without question there is a love for the Honduran mission field, but they are praying about how God may be leading them to community development in Africa. Whatever the path God leads them on, it is certain that their time at OCU has prepared Matt and Mariah to Go Forth To Serve. Page 3

honduras 2012:

THE MISSION CONTINUES‌ On May 19-26, 2012, Oakland City University sent fourteen students and two staff members led by Dr. Jim Pratt, Director of Campus Life, on a weeklong mission trip to the Faith Home Orphanage in Honduras Charity. Two students stayed for a second week. Each of the team members were greatly impacted by the trip. The team participated in such activities as painting, sealing two bridges, assisting at the grade school, organizing supply rooms, and cleaning a missionary cottage and the Bible Institute at Faith Home. In addition, thirteen of the team members visited a government orphanage to minister to children with special needs. Also, the team distributed beans and rice at a local village church after having a worship service. The greatest highlight of the trip was witnessing two Honduran people receive Jesus Christ as Lord during the worship service. Each team member shared their desire to be more appreciative of all that we have in the United

States. At least five of the students that were a part of the mission trip shared their future includes being involved in International Missions as a vocation. The team represented Oakland City University and the cause of Christ extremely well. Plans are being made for a return trip to Honduras May 2013.

Year in Review

Oakland City University held its second President’s Weekend Event in Florida in February 2012. Dr. Barber shared his vision for OCU with guests who have a heart for our university.

In April, it was time for the 3rd Annual President’s Senior Round Up to honor our graduates. Cowboy grub, hats and costume made an enjoyable evening for all those attending.

Our annual Phonathon in October was dedicated to raising funds to repair and renovate one of the most recognizable buildings on campus: The Provance Memorial Chapel.

A very special Homecoming in February brought recognition to three of OCU’s True Blue Mighty Oaks, Charlie Trafton, Ron Malin, and Skip Spence. Carolyn Malin represented her late husband.

Cynthia Retana, Professor of Music, was selected as Teacher of the Year in May. This special award was announced at the honors convocation in Johnson Center.

Dr. Barber, Dr. Yeager and Dr. Yarbrough and their spouses welcome “Barney Fife” to the Employee Appreciation Dinner in April.

A MESSAGE from the DIRECTOR of Advancement Blessings from the campus of Oakland City University! Have you ever heard the story of a man named Zacchaeus who went looking for Jesus? The Bible tells us: He entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.” So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. All who saw it began to grumble and said, “he has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner.” Zacchaeus stood there and said to the lord, “look, half of my possessions, lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much.” Then Jesus said to him, “today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the son of man came to seek out and to save the lost.” – Luke 19:1-10 Zacchaues wanted to see Jesus. He wanted to talk with Jesus and see if his life could be changed. By pledging all that he had and pledging to make right the sins of his past, he committed his life to living for God.

On behalf of OCU students, I say thank you for pledging to support our mission of being a faith-based learning community. Oakland City University is a place that is different from many colleges and universities across America. We believe that our university is sharing the message of Christ’s love while providing quality higher education. I am excited to be part of a place that is reaching out to today’s Zacchaeuses and I know you are, as well. Countless stories have affirmed that Oakland City University is fulfilling its calling to educate and equip: the head, the heart, and the hands.

May God richly bless you,

Brian J. Baker ’99, ‘03 Director of Development/ Advancement P.S. – Online gifts are always appreciated and can be made at www.OCUAdvancement.com.
