Thank you for picking up the first issue of Gravitas Magazine. We truly hope that you like it - every effort has been poured into the publication to ensure that it exudes excellence in a format that is easy to digest for those who are pushed for time. Gravitas was born from two things; the first is the passion and demand for personal success and achievement whatever that may look like to us as individuals. The second is a gap in the local media landscape for a Londoncentric, luxury lifestyle publication that both inspires such accomplishments and projects high brand values. Peterborough is the second fastest growing population in the UK, and the commuter influx means that the city’s demographic is slowly changing. The region certainly has plenty to offer, a stone’s throw away from the picturesque villages in Rutland, the beautiful stone towns of Stamford and Oundle, and the abundance of local talent and successful businesses, entrepreneurs and professionals.

One of our objectives is to leverage this wealth of knowledge and experience by creating a network of quality local businesses with high brand values that mirror those of Gravitas Magazine. Our vision is that this entrepreneurial and highly driven network will encourage growth, collaboration and mutually beneficial partnerships in order to cement the area as a powerful hub of creativity and opportunity, as well as putting our region’s luxury offerings on the map to our professional, aspiring residents and growing commuter population. We hope you enjoy the first issue and please let us know your thoughts through our social channels and website.

Peterborough has a new beauty and wellness sanctuary at Alwalton Hall. Alwalton Hall is the former home of Perkins Engines founder Frank Perkins, and has been sympathetically transformed into a stunning beauty and wellness sanctuary. In addition to the beautiful relaxation areas and regency lounges, there are five themed treatment rooms, and a former three-room guest suite, which has been renovated to provide the ultimate pampering experience. There are a wide range of beauty and wellness treatments including facials, waxing, pedicures, manicures, massage and specialist skincare including the latest CACI non-surgical anti-ageing treatments.

We take the BUSINESS

Around 1,000 visitors attended the Peterborough Biscuit event in February to celebrate one another’s successes, and to network. The event, held at Peterborough Arena, was opened by The Apprentice winner Joseph Valente. With more than 120 displays, seminars and speeches, the opportunities were endless. The event aims were:• To provide a venue for business to come together in one place. • To spotlight businesses and raise awareness of both products and services available locally. • To improve business knowledge by hosting seminars, delivered by several local business leaders.

Included in the transformation is a 15m outdoor heated swimming

but it’s up there with the very best. The event was such a success that next year’s Biscuit is confirmed for the 7th February 2018.

Environ is a globally recognised and respected professional skincare range. Environ claims to be the first brand to introduce high enough doses of vitamin A to protect and heal the skin from the elements, giving incredible results. By introducing vitamin A into your skin and body, alongside vitamin C and E and powerful antioxidants, it repairs damaged skin, increases collagen and elastin, treats pigmentation and balances both oily and dry skins. After an in-depth consultation by trained therapists you will be advised about your personal programme including the Environ Ionzyme machine, which penetrates the vitamins deep into the layers of the skin by 4000%. This increases blood flow and oxygenation resulting in beautiful, radiant skin.

Available from Zula Beauty Sanctuary.

Elysia Aesthetics and Laser is the first business in this area to offer this licensed product that has revolutionised skin therapy, maintenance, prevention and home regime programmes. Dr Zein Obabi is a dermatologist who has pioneered advanced skincare solutions, defining the science of skin health. The range treats a variety of skin conditions such as pigmentation, acne and rosacea, as well as assisting with ageing, fine lines and hydration. Each treatment is personalised after a consultation to give the individual the best possible results.

Freya Pell of Creative Cosmetics reviews Clarins

As a make-up artist I’m aways looking for new products, so when I received some Clarins samples from Maples of Stamford I was excited to try them out. I used the Instant Light Complexion Perfector as a primer, which gave my skin a lift instantly. I then applied the BB Skin Detox Fluid as a base. It complemented the primer really well and made my skin look flawless. It offers a light to medium coverage and smoothes out the skin’s texture. I also highly recommend the Face Treatment Oil for dry, dehydrated skin. I have this skin type and after using the oil for a few nights, my skin looked more revived and fresh.

Claire and Clare believe each client that visits the sanctuary should feel completely spoilt and relaxed. 'We are known mainly through word of mouth and recommendations. We believe this is because we always endeavour to treat our clients exactly how we would like to be treated. Everyone is warmly welcomed into the sanctuary and we make it our aim to help clients completely unwind and escape from their busy lives, whilst achieving great results from their treatments,' says Claire. Along with CACI Ultimate and Environ skincare, Zula are renowned for Africology, their organic skincare range. 'We love how unique this range is. These plant-based products smell divine and melt into the skin and we are so proud to be the only stockist of Africology in the UK. The Zula girls love to put their expertise into good practise by using Environ skincare and CACI to work on different skin concerns. 'As skincare specialists, we love nothing more than to be challenged and put our knowledge to the test; we are able to treat many skin complaints, such as acne, sun damage, pigmentation, wrinkles and sagging skin. We are always on the forefront of what is new and as you only have one skin, you need to look after it!' ‘Whilst we specialise in face, body and massage treatments we still offer the best general beauty treatments too,’ the girls add, ' People often say once they have been to us they will never go anywhere else.’

Guys on the move How to stay well groomed while leading a busy life

Some men schedule in a fortnightly visit to the hairdressers others take a more ad hoc approach. Freshly cut hair is a lot quicker and easier to handle. So, if you find you’re styling with one eye on the clock then keep your visits to the chair regular and you’ll find your hair falls in to place of its own accord.

Invest in a hairdryer

Styling in a hurry Wella Eimi Ocean Spritz Find at - PKai Salons £9.90

GHD Air Hairdryer Find at - PKai Salons £99.00

Whether you are styling hair post-work out and in a hurry, or trying to get to a meeting on time, the wrong products can really slow you down. It is a more time-efficient process to use products that are ultra-concentrated. These are packed with active ingredients, which means that a small amount goes a long way.

A hairdryer can be a useful investment tool for men short on time. More often than not, stylists will use a hairdryer at the end of a cut as it is beneficial to the styling of your hair. So, dry your hair in the position you want it; it’s particularly effective in controlling stubborn tufts.

Wella Eimi Ocean Spritz creates a beachy texture and helps protect hair against dehydration and UV damage. Spray onto dry or slightly damp hair then comb through. Available in all Pkai Hair Salons.

Groom on the move

Shave the night before

Clinique Skin Supplies for Men Exfoliating Tonic Find at Boots/John Lewis £16.50 No one looks their best after rushing about half the day. Carry small, easily transportable products that aren’t going to take up too much room in your pocket or bag.

ClarinsMen After Shave Soother Find at - Maples Stamford / John Lewis /Boots £23.50

Probably the most time consuming part of a man’s grooming routine is shaving, but done in a hurry it will result in missed spots and inflamed, sore skin. If time is of the essence in the morning, shave the night before when you can take your time and use appropriate products. This solution is perfect for men with sensitive skin that can be aggravated by shaving, as the skin is given time to recover over-night. However, if you are someone that experiences the five o’clock shadow this may not be the best method for you.

The great reveal Luxurious and adventurous, we give you the Maserati Levante. Towards the end of 2016 and into 2017, the motoring world saw a number of new car launches – some being greatly upgraded models and some being exciting redesigns of existing marques – but none as awe-inspiring as when Italian sports car manufacturer Maserati announced the arrival of the Levante, its first SUV complete with its signature beautiful styling and class.

Gravitas was invited to assist the Maserati marketing team to bring together a fabulous launch event of Champagne, hors d’oeuvres, stylish showcases and entertainment at the revealing of Maserati’s new family addition. Supporting acts included live music from The Brays lead singer Gavin Hydes; a sparkling display of beautiful and unique jewellery and watches from Crown Jewellers; quality beauty products and treatments from Maples of Stamford; breathtaking, evocative art from Tony Nero; exquisite Italian designer suits from Gagliardi; and divine canapes prepared and served by Jeeves Catering.

The evening was a huge success, with clients who had already purchased the new deluxe 4x4 as well as potential customers wanting to be the first to view the car at close quarters.

Maserati has decided that we Brits buy diesels by the bucket-load, so a diesel Levante is what I was given to test for a few days. It’s the only engine option available to us at the moment, although there is also a Ferrari-derived petrol unit on the continent. Maserati’s PRs are keen for journalists to try the Levante because, apparently, we are influencers – and the Italian firm wants us to tell the world that an SUV from an illustrious manufacturer is not weird. And you know what? Maserati has a point.

The open road is where the Levante really comes into its own. It’s a top motorway cruiser, masticating through the miles manically, yet effortlessly. The lavish Levante stays planted at 70mph and the turbo diesel pulls like a train from low revs. The car’s high speed ride is refined, and any changes in the road surface are soaked up by the Maserati’s

‘Here are our recommendations for a fantastic dining experience.’

Great food goes without saying, but beautiful surroundings and a buzzing atmosphere can turn eating out in to an event.

Hambleton Hall The jewel in the local food scene, Hambleton Hall, sits atop the Hambleton peninsula, bestowing stunning views over Rutland Water. It has held a Michelin Star since 1982, with 24 of those years owed to the faultless cookery of head chef, Aaron Patterson. Stylish and sophisticated, a visit to the Hall is an experience you won’t forget – every aspect of a guest’s visit has been meticulously considered by owner Tim Hart and his team. The sous chef, master baker Julian Carter, set up a bakery in 2008 to supply the Hall with freshly baked goods and has won numerous awards, including Britain’s Best Bakery. A definite for food lovers.

Prévost offers a relaxed atmosphere – so very different to the standard fine-dining experience – which is partnered with some of the most exquisite food, an extensive wine list and amazing cocktails, making Prévost Peterborough’s most exciting dining experience.

The George Hotel Attracting a well-polished crowd, dining at The George of Stamford is a great excuse to put on your best bib and tucker, order a bottle of Champagne and luxuriate in the grandeur of the surroundings. Steeped in history, The George does old-fashioned with aplomb; from the sirloin brought to the table beneath a dome of silver, to the dessert trolley laden with trifles and profiteroles – there’s an air of a bygone era wherever you turn. If you’re eating in the oak-panelled dining room, then be prepared to go all out – oysters, lobster, Dover sole and veal are all on the menu and cooked to perfection by chef patron, Paul Reseigh.

The Bell Inn Sit back and soak up the historical romance of one of Peterborough’s most notable hotels, The Bell Inn of Stilton. Rebuilt in the early 17th century, this fine coaching inn once served thousands of weary travellers as they made their way down the Great North Road and was a rumoured resting place of the legendary highwayman Dick Turpin. These days, sitting under the exquisite vaulted ceiling beside a roaring fire and enjoying award-winning food by candlelight, make The Bell Inn one of the most romantic places to dine in the area.

The Olive Branch was Good Pub Guide UK Pub of the Year 2014, and is just one of three places in the UK to receive a Sawday’s Fabulous Food Award in 2016. It was also named Editor’s Choice in the 2017 Good Hotel Guide. It combines the relaxed feel of a traditional country pub with friendly and professional service, top-notch accommodation and exceptional food.

Chef-owner Mimmo Fricha opened Il Vicolo in 2015, and since then the restaurant has quickly gained an enviable reputation as Stamford’s leading eatery.

The kitchen is led by Sean Hope, the joint proprietor, who specialises in taste-packed classics, skilfully working with local producers and ingredients from the pub’s own smallholding. This straightforward, yet precise cooking philosophy, goes perfectly with the laid-back, but stylish environment that Sean and fellow owner Ben Jones have carefully crafted.

Mimmo prides himself on providing the finest of fresh Italian food, which is all prepared in the Il Vicolo kitchen (even the pasta is prepared daily by the chefs). All ingredients are sourced locally including the amazing melt-in-the-mouth fillet steaks, which are from Nelsons Butchers in the town.

Joseph Valente Joseph Valente, local entrepreneur and The Apprentice 2015 winner, talks about his journey and lifelong ambitions.

Tell us about your school days at Stanground College. Apparently, you weren’t always the model student. No, I wasn’t. I just didn’t think that what was being taught would benefit me, so I started playing up, and I was subsequently suspended at 15.

Who inspired you? As a teenager, my uncle was a big inspiration, then I found Lord Sugar’s autobiography. My main ambition at that point was to change the environment that I was living in and create a new lifestyle for myself. This drove me to make money, which entailed good, old-fashioned hard work.

Did anyone encourage you to apply for The Apprentice?

So, we all watched The Apprentice on TV, but how does it differ from reality?

Lord Sugar’s autobiography encouraged me to start the business, which inevitably led me to apply for The Apprentice. I knew that if I went for it, I would be able to win!

In reality, it’s a lot harder. You are not allowed to use the internet or mobile phones. You are dictated by the filming schedules and where you can go. So, when you see a basic task not being delivered, it’s because you don’t have the everyday tools at your disposal, which makes it very difficult.

So when did you realise that you could win? I realised I was going to win the day I applied. Ha! Ha! Good answer!

Did you really believe it?

You post a lot of motivational quotes on your social media. My favourite quote is “impossible is not fact, it’s just an opinion”. What’s yours?

Yes, 100%. You have to believe you are going to be a success. Doubt can creep in, but you have to deal with it and believe in yourself – be focused and determined.

It is written on my business cards: “Don’t wait for opportunity – create it”. I live by that quote, and would encourage any budding entrepreneur to do the same.

Photography by | Interview by Leigh Taylor

On that note, any advice for budding entrepreneurs in the region?

In terms of numbers, how much has ImpraGas grown?

Follow your dreams and go for it. You will need to take risks, but don’t be put off by other people’s opinions and limitations. It is about self-belief, putting in 100% and, of course, working hard.

My turnover has increased by 500%, which is substantial. By simplifying the business from maintenance servicing to installation-only has allowed us to grow a lot quicker.

So since winning The Apprentice, is there anybody that really inspires you? In the sporting arena – Conor McGregor. He is my hero; with his bravado, confidence and incredible self-belief. He has worked tirelessly throughout his whole career to climb the ladder to the top.

He is almost God-like isn’t he? Yes, exactly! Wanting to take on the giants and it’s the same scenario for me and British Gas. I want to let them know I am coming for them.

So, how is that going? How is ImpraGas compared to British Gas and Pimlico? To compare us to British Gas, we are still way behind, but I am taking a little bit of it every day and that is an exciting journey. Pimlico Plumbers has dominated London for more than 40 years, but we are on its tail and it knows.

What makes you really happy? Achieving goals, proving the doubters wrong! Family is important to me. I have a two-year old nephew I love spending time with; he helps me switch off.

“Don’t wait for opportunity – create it.”

How else do you relax? I spend the majority of my time working, however when I am not, I like to go out with friends and I love eating out.

Anywhere local you would recommend? I know a couple of fantastic places, the new Pizza Parlour is a great dining experience, Mattoni’s in Hampton do fantastic Italian food and cocktails, and a little place called Prévost on Priestgate; the food there is amazing.

Fantastic! They will be pleased with that shout out. So, finally, when did you physically install your last boiler? Funnily enough, it was the other day and we were real busy. But the one before that was three years ago.

Are you on the right track? Planning for the later years in life.

Preparing for Retirement can be a daunting task and the decisions you make now could have a long-lasting impact. With developments in medicine and positive lifestyle changes, life expectancy is on the rise for both men and women who are now expected to live to an average age of 85-87. Alongside this is the forever changing pension environment and the importance of keeping on top of these changes. Our retirement planning package targets the questions you need to be asking yourself in advance of retiring regardless of your age.

When do you want to retire and what do you want to be doing in later life? If you plan to retire at age 65, you will need to have an income to last you around 20 years. If you don’t currently have the funds in place to support the retirement you had hoped for you have the options to pay more into your pensions now, work longer, or change your plans to more achievable goals. Keep your retirement plans in check and build on this over your working years as health, work, legislation and personal circumstances change.

When do you want to start planning and how? With the introduction of Auto-Enrolment, all employees are being encouraged to start thinking about their future now. Taking advice early outlines the opportunities available to you in order not to miss out. It is easier to accumulate over a longtime scale rather than fixing the situation in a short term. There are significant tax saving strategies available to convert cash that fails to generate growth in to a fund that benefits from tax relief without adding to investment risk. There is the potential to invest in funds that have the potential to outperform cash returns. An Independent Financial Adviser (IFA) is best placed to provide advice.

What can I be doing now? A starting point would be to establish what you are likely to need when retirement is planned (at today’s prices) and compare that with the likely benefits already in place – this may reveal a gap – the measurement and bridging of a gap is what an IFA will help you with. The integration of diversification and risk management is crucial to ensure that your portfolio is changing as your needs evolve. The solutions will vary depending on individual circumstances. Your IFA is there to create and manage a portfolio that is reviewed regularly alongside your life decisions.

I’m ready to retire – what now? Finally, you’ve worked hard to build your portfolio it’s only sensible to seek advice on your options as this could be the best decision of your retirement planning. There are so many solutions and not everyone realises that the option offered by your existing pension provider is not the only option as there could be others on the open market through your IFA. The decumulation of pensions is crucial and not taking advice on withdrawing your funds in a tax-efficient manner could reverse all your efforts of building the fund. Start your journey with Brooks Wealth Management.

People power

Public image

Last year saw businesses adapt to various changes including auto enrolment, national living wage plus the personal liability associated with health and safety breaches. This change will continue throughout 2017, with the introduction of the apprenticeship levy and gender pay gap reporting. However, without doubt the biggest change is in regards to employment status.

Be honest, how many of you have truly invested in your businesses PR? I don’t necessarily mean financially, often the toptier placements won’t cost you money; I’m referring to time, energy and commitment.

In late 2016, a tribunal judge confirmed that self-employed Uber drivers were in actual fact categorised as workers and as such have employment rights and entitlements. Further cases have subsequently been won against Deliveroo, CitySprint and others. If you have self-employed workers within your business I urge you to get in touch and discuss how this ruling may affect you and your business. If you took the time to research your audience, through social media insight tools and other data sets, then you would become aware of the publications that they read and engage with; and if you are aware of the trending topics and the commonly asked questions in your industry then you know what you should be writing expert columns about. The truth is that PR, along with marketing is often cast as a frivolous, fluffy activity. However, a carefully targeted and executed PR strategy enables you to be directly in front of your audience, in the titles that they engage with while pitching yourself as an expert in your field – all in one fell swoop. Well-thought out PR placements have a wealth of benefits; they allow you to shape the public and industry perception of your business, and you become influential. If you are an expert or a thought-leader, it’s highly likely that people want to hear from you. Build your profile through PR, and they will come. The Professionals

Marketing masters Unless your business has been trading with its eyes shut for the last few months, you will have probably noticed that the behaviour of your customers has been changing. In fact, this change has been noticed in the wider circles of the marketing industry, which is where I reside.

The rise of the Mumpreneurs It has been reported that mums running their own businesses contributed a huge £7.2 billion to the economy in 2014, and this number is set to increase year-on-year with it predicted to reach £9.5billion by 2025.

The change is because we are entering the age of consumer choice.

Definition of Mumpreneur: A woman who combines running a business enterprise with looking after her children.

The age of consumer choice means that our customers have an expectation to be served when and where they choose, and it’s not an unreasonable expectation, as we are living in a connected society – if we like it or not.

There are many reasons why women are starting their own businesses. These include increasing childcare costs, wanting to spend more time with their children and the flexibility of being their own boss.

So, what does this mean for businesses like yours? It means you have to start thinking multichannel when it comes to marketing.

All three reasons contributed to my own personal decision to start my first business journey seven years ago while on maternity leave with my first daughter, and honestly, it is the best thing I ever did.

“Multichannel marketing is all about meeting your customers where they already are.”

Since then I have launched two other businesses all while running a home and raising my own two beautiful children.

I know that multi-channel may sound like hard work, but you only need to choose the multiple channels that your audience already use … multi-channel doesn’t mean you have to be everywhere. Choose your channels wisely, spend time understanding where your customers are and what they are doing there and join in. For more marketing advice or question about this article contact the Gravitas marketing team.

I believe that the world we live in offers an abundance of opportunity and you can build a successful business from just about any skill, talent or passion that you may have, you just need to figure what that is, surround yourself with like-minded, successful people and take ACTION. THE WINE BAR 10 St Paul's Street, Stamford PE9 2BE T: 01780 757844 W: TWELVE ALL SAINTS 12 All Saints Place, Stamford. PE9 2AB T: 01780 765335 W:

What’s happening? What a fantastic assignment! I get to write about the area’s newest leisure and entertainment facilities and the people who bring the rock into our roll for Gravitas – this new, stylish, fashionable city magazine. So, what makes me qualified on the subject of clubbing, pubbing, trendspotting and general rock ‘n’ roll? Well, I have worked for more than three decades within the industry

for some of the most successful operators worldwide. Qualified? Maybe. Been around the block? Definitely. So, where are we going to start? Two watering holes, both in the market town of Stamford, one that has had several reincarnations over the years, and, the other that is new, happening and growing.

Pub and club concept based around artisan pizzas. Well, Charles Wells brewery has had a similar concept for some while, and is looking to open a place in Peterborough shortly (pizza, pots and pints). It focuses on casual, laidback dining, while Willoughby’s Venue, Lounge, Bar & Kitchen appears to be unsure of its target market. However, chameleon venues (new in the 90s) can work well as they change from one clientele to another throughout the day. A range of fabulous cocktails and the pizzas aren’t bad either.

Bon viveur and all-round fun guy Phil Harrison reports on the latest and hippest hangouts in Stamford

Brothers doing it for themselves? Not really. Just Alex and Steve. On stepping into this wine and cocktail bar I could see it was packed with trendies in suits and sophisticated ladies crammed around delicate tables with big old gin glasses and plenty of banter. Luckily, the bar staff immediately clocked me and ushered me in, clearing a table in minutes. The warm welcome didn’t dissipate during my stay and I was happily surrounded by a crowd of discerning drinkers. With comfortable seating upstairs, there are plenty of places to park. The theme and look of Twelve All Saints feels a little borrowed from the boys’ other unit The Wine Bar on St Pauls Street, with its quirky Georgian salon vibe. However, the cocktails are just as sophisticated. They’re all fun originals using premium spirits. I enjoyed a Vive La France! – cognac, orange curaçao, lime and pineapple fizz! Both bars are quality through and through from the glassware to their wine and gin range. So, what’s the difference between these units? Well, Twelve All Saints has a younger, slightly edgier clientele than the wine bar. But, for me, these are the best new ventures in town by a Malbec yard.
