Innovation in Minimally Invasive Orthopaedic Surgery Recognized for their breakthrough approach to orthopaedic treatment, Dr. Robert A. Kayal and the surgeons at Kayal Orthopaedic Center, P.C. specialize in minimally invasive procedures that accelerate each patient’s return to a vibrant, pain-free lifestyle. Many minimally invasive procedures are performed arthroscopically through tiny incisions—eliminating the need for traditional open incisions. Patients undergoing this type of surgery also experience reduced postoperative pain and scarring, shorter hospital stays, faster rehabilitation, better preservation of anatomy, and an expedited return to daily activity. As New Jersey’s premier provider of cutting-edge orthopaedic treatment, Dr. Kayal’s team of surgeons leads the region in minimally invasive joint replacement, arthroscopic repairs and joint reconstruction.

INNOVATION AND SPORTS MEDICINE 5

Sports Medicine Sports Medicine for Rookies, Pros and Fans Focused on the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of sportsrelated injuries, Kayal Orthopaedic Center, P.C. takes a team approach to minimizing downtime, expediting healing and elevating athletic performance. Viewing sports medicine as a synchronized effort, we coordinate with physicians, rehabilitation specialists and physical therapists to ensure world-class care for athletes of all levels. Dr. Robert A. Kayal and his team of surgeons utilize progressive treatment and surgical techniques to treat a wide range of athletic injuries and conditions, including: Rotator cuff and labral shoulder tears Tennis and golfer’s elbow Bursitis and tendinitis Ligament sprains and muscle strains ACL and meniscal knee tears Many of these disorders are treated with arthroscopic surgery: a minimally invasive method that utilizes a camera to look inside a joint and employs specialized instruments to carry out the surgery. Dr. Kayal is highly trained in sports medicine and arthroscopy, and routinely performs “all-arthroscopic” repairs of injuries sustained by professional, college, high school, and recreational athletes. These procedures are performed with tiny incisions, rather than traditional open incisions. www.kayalortho.com

Patient Specific Instrumented (PSI) Customized Knee Replacement Implants Specializing in cutting-edge joint replacement methods, Dr. Robert A. Kayal is the regional pioneer of Patient Specific Instrumented (PSI) computerassisted navigation technology for knee implants. PSI is the next generation in high-fidelity knee replacement, and allows the joint to be custom-fitted to each patient’s anatomy. PSI begins with painless MRI imaging and pre-operative planning tools that result in a 3-dimensional model of the knee joint. Accurately depicting the unique properties of your knee, the model becomes a precise surgical tool that guides bone cutting, joint alignment, pin insertion and custom instrumentation. PSI technology allows surgeons to perform a virtual knee replacement in advance of your surgery—and replace your damaged joint with a new knee designed specifically for your body and lifestyle!

CUSTOMIZED KNEE REPLACEMENT

MRI-Based Knee Replacement Advantages Include: Alignment accuracy: PSI improves knee implant fit and maximizes joint stability. Minimal invasiveness: PSI knee replacement involves less bone cutting than traditional knee replacement. Expedited surgery: Pre-planning helps to reduce surgery time and hasten recovery. True customization: Just like your favorite suit, your knee joint is tailor-made for you!

WHY PSI? No two knees are the same. PSI technology allows surgeons to pre-design the ideal knee—from joint shape to incision points. Your new knee will fit your body perfectly. In addition, PSI knee replacement utilizes high-flex implants that are gender-specific, since there are anatomical differences between the knees of men and women.

Orthobiologics for Non-Invasive Pain Relief Biologics is fast becoming the future of orthopaedics. At Kayal Orthopaedic Center, we use specialized cells to stimulate the tissue healing process. These advanced biomaterials relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and restore joint mobility in osteoarthritis and other orthopaedic conditions. For over 14 years, Dr. Robert A. Kayal has been using these non-operative injection treatments with great success. Patients typically require a series of injections, and pain should improve as treatment progresses. During each brief appointment, a Kayal Orthopaedic Center surgeon will inject medication directly into the painful joint. Unlike medications that are distributed throughout the body, injections offer localized joint relief. Your doctor will recommend the viscosupplement that is best for your symptoms.

ORTHOBIOLOGICS

Viscosupplementation Options Include: SYNVISC®

Hyalgan®

Orthovisc®

Supartz®

Synvisc-One®

Euflexxa®

WHAT ARE VISCOSUPPLEMENTS? Viscosupplements are made from hyaluronan, a natural chemical found in healthy human tissue and joint fluid. Patients suffering from osteoarthritis do not produce high-quality hyaluronan, and viscoelastic supplementation replaces the joint’s diseased synovial fluid.

PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP) PRP is a breakthrough procedure proven to speed recovery from orthopaedic injuries. Using a centrifuge system to separate the patient’s red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, our team conditions the blood’s plasma with newly activated growth factors and proteins. When sterilely injected into the injury site, the enriched plasma promotes the healing of soft tissue and—in some cases—reverses disease. Dr. Kayal and his team have successfully used PRP in the management of many orthopaedic conditions, including meniscal, ACL and rotator cuff tears, SLAP and labral tears, Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, arthritis, and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Osteoporosis Prevention and Disease Management Kayal Orthopaedic Center delivers cutting-edge care for those at risk for developing bone disease or currently suffering from osteoporosis. Called the “silent killer,” osteoporosis is a stealthy, unpredictable disease that does not become symptomatic until the advanced stages. At Kayal Orthopaedic Center, we educate patients, assess risk factors and develop treatment plans so patients can maintain the healthy, active lives they deserve.

With skilled evaluation and innovative therapies, osteoporosis can be prevented or slowed. Dr. Robert A. Kayal, MD and his team will recommend the bone density screenings, medications and lifestyle changes required to manage the disease—and deal with its symptoms. Comprehensive Osteoporosis Services Include: Physical exams and screenings Bone mineral density (BMD) testing Advanced imaging and lab testing Osteopenia and osteoporosis treatment Osteoporosis management programs

OSTEOPOROSIS

OSTEOPENIA A precursor to osteoporosis in which bone density is lower than normal. While osteopenia is not a disease, it must be taken seriously. Patients diagnosed with the condition have a greater potential for developing osteoporosis.

OSTEOPOROSIS Thinning of bone tissue that leads to increased risk for injury and fractures. As the disease advances, patients may experience pain and postural deformity. Risk factors including smoking, drinking, hormonal abnormalities, family disease history, and prolonged use of certain medications.

Advanced Healing with Breakthrough Laser Therapy Pioneering new technologies in orthopaedic treatment, Kayal Orthopaedic Center offers laser therapy that works at the cellular level to decrease pain and accelerate healing. This minimally invasive therapy is a painless way of targeting damaged tissue, and more than 90 percent of patients experience relief after just a few sessions. (Number of sessions vary by condition and severity.)

Comprehensive Laser Treatment Services Are Recommended For: Arthritis, bursitis and tendinitis Sports injuries Sprains, strains and trigger points Occupational injuries Repetitive motion injuries Post-surgical swelling and healing Wound and bruise healing

As New Jersey’s premier provider of laser services, Kayal Orthopaedic Center provides safe, advanced therapy that stimulates the body’s built-in healing systems, increases blood flow, reduces swelling, and improves neural connections.

Acute and chronic pain

LASER THERAPY

LASER THERAPY A therapeutic treatment that produces healing, reduced swelling and pain relief. The minimally invasive treatment option uses photons—or light energy—to penetrate damaged tissue, stimulate cell activity and speed tissue repair.

Additional Orthopaedic Specialties Skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries to the joints, bones, ligaments, tendons and nerves, Kayal Orthopaedic Center surgeons are versed in a wide range of orthopaedic services.

Additional Specialities JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERY

FOOT AND ANKLE CONDITIONS

Dr. Robert A. Kayal is highly trained in the field of joint replacement surgery, performing 200-250 replacements each year. In addition, Dr. Kayal possesses the distinction of performing the first-ever minimally invasive partial knee replacement and patellofemoral knee joint replacement at The Valley Hospital (Ridgewood, NJ), Patient Care Associates, LLC (Englewood, NJ) and Hackensack University Medical Center (Hackensack, NJ). This revolutionary, minimally invasive approach incorporates a 3- to 4-inch incision, as opposed to the typical 8- to 12-inch incision typically required for knee joint replacement. As a result, patients are able to return home the same day as surgery and recuperate faster—since they endure no cutting of tendons or muscle.

The foot and ankle are extremely complex, sophisticated structures, consisting of over 50 bones and joints and dozens of small ligaments. Board-certified podiatrist Dr. Chad W. Rappaport and his Kayal Orthopaedic Center colleagues appreciate the intricacies of the foot and ankle, and are experts in the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of all types of podiatric injuries and conditions. Expertise Includes: Radiofrequency coblation for chronic tendon/ligament problems Sclerosing alcohol therapy for neuromas Ankle arthroscopy with viscosupplementation for arthritis Prolotherapy for chronic Achilles tendinosis

ADDITIONAL SPECIALITIES

HIP ARTHROSCOPY

BONE DENSITY TESTING

Drs. Kayal and Pope are two of a small number of surgeons in the NY-Metropolitan area who regularly perform hip arthroscopy—a minimally invasive, cutting-edge procedure that treats hip conditions through small puncture sites around the joint. Treatable conditions include, but are not limited to: loose bodies, osteoarthritis, hip labral tears and femoracetabular impingement (FAI). Hip arthroscopy is typically performed as an outpatient surgery, and is used to relieve hip joint pain, motion loss, joint clicking and hip buckling.

Committed to overcoming and managing the “silent disease” of osteoporosis, the Kayal Orthopaedic team works vigilantly to prevent this bone condition and its deleterious effects on patients and families. Through comprehensive bone density assessments, lifestyle education and innovative treatment plans, our physicians are continually reducing patient risk factors and disease rates.

TRAUMA/FRACTURE CARE Trained in a Level-1 Trauma Center in New York, the Kayal Orthopaedic team has expertise in the diagnosis, management, reconstruction and rehabilitation of complex fractures, acute injuries and emergency bone or joint trauma.

SPINAL DISORDER TREATMENT Dr. Kayal and his surgical team are equipped to assess, diagnose and provide a myriad of treatment options for virtually any spinal condition, including: disc herniation, bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, osteoporosis, scoliosis, sprains/strains, spinal fractures, myelopathy, radiculopathy, sciatica, and spinal stenosis.
