Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people

I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Hello and welcome to the first issue of

Grapevine TThe Worcestershire

Regular readers of The Villager may be wondering what has happened to it and why we are now calling our magazine The Worcestershire Grapevine. Well, it's very simple. We recently made some changes to our company, which is now called Grapevine Publications (Worcestershire) Limited and we thought ... new company ... time for a new magazine. So, The Worcestershire Grapevine was born! But don't worry, the new magazine will have everything The Villager had, and we'll still be delivering to your door every month. In this our first issue, we've got the first of our Christmas adverts, as well as several new advertisers offering beauty care, cleaning services, care home, block paving and printing. And if you're looking for somewhere to go on bonfire night, have a look at what the West Midland Safari Park have to offer. Next month we'll tell you where you can go to get the best Christmas trees in Worcestershire!

The centre is run entirely by volunteers, 365 days a year. Recently due to changes in circumstances some of the long standing volunteers have had to stop helping. This has left resources stretched at the Centre.

It is essential that you have good communication skills, have an understanding of cats, can commit to a regular work routine and are keen to get involved in all aspects of cat rescue. This includes a variety of tasks from daily cleaning of the cat pens but also cat socialisation.

Hughes & Company Printers

T

ucked away behind a modest façade on the High Street in Pershore, is one of the longest running printing firms in the area. Hughes & Company boasts four generations of printers with all the knowledge and experience that goes with that. Alan Hughes, the current proprietor of the business, says that printing is in his blood, which is not too surprising as his grandfather, father and mother were all in the printing industry. Alan’s son Andrew - the fourth generation – is also part of this family run business which prides itself on offering first class printing for any job, regardless of size.

Stationery Products

Although sometimes perceived to be a small local printer, Hughes & Company employs all the latest technology and equipment to produce top quality printing of anything from business stationery – letterheads, compliment slips, business cards - to calendars and greeting cards. Displayed in the shop is a range of exquisite floral and wildlife cards and prints, drawn and painted by local artists and printed by Hughes & Company. But it doesn’t stop there. Hughes & Company also produces magazines and books. Beautifully bound, some with gold edged-pages, Alan is justifiably proud of the fact that several of the books his company have produced have been presented to members of The Royal Family and also to former President Bush senior.

Golf enthusiasts will no doubt be familiar with some of the books that have been produced by Hughes & Company for many well-known golf clubs throughout the country. Alan’s experience is not just limited to printing for the British market. He worked internationally in the printing industry for over 20 years and travelled extensively, living in South Africa for nearly fourteen years. So whether you need a batch of business cards printed, or a 500-page book, go along to Hughes & Company and talk to Alan or one of his highly experienced staff … you’ll be in good hands! tel: 01386 553424 fax: 01386 553434

Boom Time & Santa's Festive Treat at West Midland Safari Park

D

ue to popular demand and for the very first time this year, the annual Firework Festival at West Midland Safari Park is being held on two consecutive days – Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th November.

As is always the case, on the day of the Firework Festival the animal reserves will be completely closed throughout the event. Further information and to pre-book tickets, visit the Park’s official website: www.wmsp. co.uk.

As one of the largest firework displays in the West Midlands, the event has generated a dedicated following for over 30 years with a huge bonfire and firework display. This year, the theme for the weekend Festival is LOVE and therefore the displays will be accompanied by some of the very best powerful love songs around. There are also late-night rides, discovery trail, sea lion show and a range of refreshments including a hog roast, as well as a bar and disco in Treetops Pavilion.

he annual Santa Safari event at West Midland Safari Park starts on Saturday, 15th November 2014 and on selected dates right up to Christmas Eve. During this time, the Discovery Trail at the Park will be decked in festive spendour and the most delightful elves make this event even more special. Santa Safari is a unique and unusual seasonal experience that also incorporates the call of the wild.

Whilst the Festival on Saturday, 8th November will be the traditional ‘must see’ event for many of those that have visited the Park before, the event on Sunday, 9th Nov will be very much more geared to the family. In fact, so much so, that the timings have been brought forward one hour with the gates and rides opening at 1.00pm, bonfire lit at 5.30pm. Last admission is at 6.00pm and fireworks commence at 6.15pm. The Park and theme park rides close at 9.00pm.

So, why is Santa Safari at West Midland Safari Park so different from many festive events? Well, as well as having the chance to visit Santa in his stunning Grotto, the four-mile self-drive safari is open, too. This is the ideal opportunity to view the animals in winter from the comfort of your car – like seeing the new baby elephant, along with tigers, rhinos, giraffe, zebra wild dogs and cheetah to name just a few. Then, there are the all weather attractions in the Discovery Trail

The African Village is open too – and is the perfect location to encounter free-ranging lemurs in the largest walk-through lemur exhibit in the country and to see the cutest little meerkats in Meerkat Mayhem. When it comes to meeting the great man himself, Santa’s Grotto also includes a sleigh ride as an integral part of the Santa Experience – passengers just climb aboard to make their imaginary ‘journey’ to see Santa in Safari Lapland and to complete this Christmas treat there are two realistic looking Reindeer with moving scenery, just to add to the fun! Children have their photo taken with Santa to take home, along with a gift of their choice. Whilst adults are not forgotten either, as a choice of Mulled Wine or Hot Chocolate and Mince Pie is also included in their ticket price. 5 Meals Ready in 5 Minutes

M

ost of us want to eat healthy – we really do – but a single detrimental factor gets in our way ... we simply don't have the time. We all lead busy lives that leave very little extra time for healthy meal preparations, but the alternative of fast food meals, frozen dinners and restaurant fare is making us lose in the battle of the bulge. All too often I see people exercise hard everyday and then flush their results away with irresponsible eating. Don't let this be you! To get you on the fast track to quick, healthy eating here are 5 healthy meals that take only 5 minutes to prepare:

Fast Meal Number 1: Traditional pancakes are filled with carbs, grains and a plethora of simple sugars – not something you'd consider healthy. However, this simple, wholesome, 3-ingredient pancake recipe is the exception. It's a pancake that you're able to enjoy without guilt.

3-Ingredient Pancakes: 3 ripe bananas 2 eggs 3 tablespoons almond butter ½ teaspoon vanilla extract or ground cinnamon (optional)

Fast Meal Number 2: Tuna is a wonderful fish that's packed with muscle-building protein. Here's a refreshing tuna salad recipe that, in addition to being quick to prepare, avoids the trap of high-calorie dressing.

Quick Tuna Salad: 1 green apple, chopped 1/2 an onion, chopped 2 tablespoons of fresh parsley, chopped 2 cans albacore tuna, drained 1 tablespoon dijon mustard 2 tablespoons of coconut oil, melted 10 red grapes, halved sea salt and pepper to taste • Mix all of the ingredients in a large bowl and serve immediately. I like to serve this salad in large butter lettuce leaves, or scooped onto avocado halves. Fast Meal Number 3: Yoghurt has often been advertised as a healthy, guilt-free snack or meal replacement. This always bothers me because I know just how many simple carbs and sugars most flavoured yoghurts contain. Here's a recipe for a creamy, fruit flavoured snack that is actually packed with protein and free of fattening sugars.

Creamy Protein Mousse: 2 tablespoons of chopped fruit 1 can of coconut milk, full fat (chill in fridge overnight) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 frozen bananas, peeled 1 tablespoon coconut oil ¼ teaspoon almond extract 2 tblespoons stevia-sweetened vanilla protein powder

• Mash the bananas in a bowl or blend in a food processor. Add the eggs, almond butter and flavour additions. Mix until smooth. • Preheat a griddle or skillet. Lightly grease with coconut oil. Pour the batter in ¼ cup scoops. • Once you see bubbles form, flip and cook the other side until golden. • Serve with fresh fruit. • Chill the can of coconut milk in the fridge overnight. 20 To advertise call 01684 833715 or 07754 170286 or visit www.grapevinepublications.co.uk

Do NOT shake the can up at all! • Carefully turn the can over and open from the bottom. • Drain out the liquid and scoop the white cream into a food processor. Discard the liquid. • Throw all of the ingredients into a food processor. Blend on high until creamy. Enjoy chilled.

Fast Meal Number 4: What you decide to eat for breakfast sets the tone for the rest of your food decisions for the day. Cereals high in sugar or a breakfast sandwich grabbed from a convenience store will set you up to eat junk for the rest of the day. This quick breakfast recipe is packed with amazing, natural flavour as well as proteinfilled eggs to power your day.
Courgette Egg Scramble: 1 teaspoon olive oil 1 courgette, thinly sliced 1/2 an onion, chopped 2 tablespoons chives, chopped 1 teaspoon fresh rosemary, minced 2 organic eggs • In a small skillet place the olive oil over medium heat. Add the courgette, onion, chives and rosemary. Cook until the courgette is lightly browned on both sides. • Crack the eggs into the skillet and continue to cook, mixing, until the eggs are set. Remove from heat and enjoy immediately.

and lead to obesity. I'd like you to consider an ‘Everything Salad' to be the perfect, quick and guilt-free meal. By taking a big bowl of fresh greens and topping it with lean protein, colourful veggies and a light, homemade dressing – you've got yourself the perfect meal!

Everything Salad: Dark leafy greens (spinach, arugula, kale) Lean protein (chicken, turkey, lamb, hard boiled egg) Colourful veggies, chopped (bell peppers, tomatoes, courgette) Fresh Herbs (basil, rosemary, oregano, mint) Homemade salad dressing: 2 tablespoons of olive oil 2 tablespoons of fresh squeezed orange juice 1 tablespoon orange zest Stevia to taste 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard Dash of salt and pepper • Raid your fridge for fresh, organic produce and lean, cooked protein. • Add in some fresh veggies and chopped herbs and mix together with a simple, homemade dressing. There you have it, the perfect meal! While eating healthy, nutritious meals is great, don't forget that exercise is half of the battle when it comes to getting and staying fit.

Fast Meal Number 5: There was a time when most people would turn their nose up at the idea of a salad being a meal, but times are changing and we are now more aware than ever how traditional meals are too heavy

O

n my last outing I came face to face with some beautiful creatures ... American River Otters. If you’ve ever seen a family of otters playing you’ll know what I mean. Mother Flo, and twins Minnie and Ha Ha, arrived at The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) Slimbridge centre in summer 2009 as part of our wetland mammal “Back from the Brink” project. For most otters, fish is their staple diet but can be supplemented by frogs or small mammals. Its a tough life for the family of three who spend their days frolicking around in the water, or sunbathing and sleeping in their den! Otters are active hunters, chasing prey in the water or searching the beds of rivers, and lakes. Most species live beside water and usually enter it only to hunt or travel, otherwise spending much of their time on land to avoid 26

The Playful Otter article & photographs by Pamela Green

their fur becoming waterlogged. They are very playful animals and appear to engage in various behaviours for sheer enjoyment, such as building waterslides and then sliding on them into the water. They may also find and play with small stones. You can learn a lot about them if you go to one of the talks at the feeding sessions held daily. We found it very intriguing and I managed to take some lovely photos. Recently WWT published some exciting footage of a family of wild otters captured on a camera trap at WWT. The staff knew that wild European otters existed on the site, but it is the first evidence that they are breeding on the wildlife reserve. Wild European otters are nocturnal

and the footage was captured at night. It shows the mother and two of her cubs inspecting a sluice and leaving scent markings. The otter cubs are more playful and curious than their mum but stay close to her at all times. One lets out a distress call and runs to her at one point in the film. The reserve warden said: “It is a massive pat on the back for us to have wild otters breeding at Slimbridge, as it means that the habitat is in really good shape, with very good water quality and a strong food chain.” For many years otters were on the brink of extinction and were hunted for their fur. But today, thanks to the Biodiversity Action Plan, (BAP) they are back and living in the wild.

he first thing you notice as you enter the Beauty Barn is the calm and peaceful atmosphere. The pleasantly decorated waiting room with its comfortable chairs and soft background music is soothing and relaxing. Owner of the business, beautician Michelle Mabbott, talked about herself and the Beauty Barn. “I’ve always had an interest in beauty therapy, and making people feel better about themselves, so when it came to choosing a career, becoming a beautician was the obvious choice. I started training 11 years ago, and 6 years ago I joined the Heavenly Bodies ladies only gym here at Craycombe Farm offering a range of treatments to both the gym members and my own clients. Then in February this year, I took over the business, converted it to beauty only and changed the name to The Beauty Barn.” Michelle and her assistant, Paula Andrews, are highly qualified and very experienced in a range of beauty therapies. Both have Level 2 Beauty qualifications in facials, manicures, pedicures, waxing and massage, and both are trained in the use of Thalgo and Jessica products, as well as Crystal Clear Microdermabrasion treatments. Michelle has NVQ in Reflexology and Indian Head massage.

There are regular special offers at The Beauty Barn. This month you can treat yourself to a Spa Day for two for just £95. The day includes a ½ hour back massage followed by lunch. Then a ½ hour facial and exclusive use of the relaxation room. Also on offer during November is a full body tanning by Kissed Jessica, for just £25, and in December you can have a Full Body Massage for just £26. With Christmas coming up, these special offers would make a wonderful gift for that hard-to-buy-for person. Alternatively you can choose any treatment available at The Beauty Barn to give to that special person for Christmas, or just for fun. Next year, The Beauty Barn will be offering Spa Days in conjunction with The Craycombe Farm Cafe, so watch the website for details. The Royal British Legion D-Day Remembrance Tour 2014

Michael Stone World War II Veteran

W

orld War II veteran Michael Stone was born on 25 April 1922. His family came to Worcester in 1926, where he attended the Royal Grammar School. When he was 18 his efforts to join the RAF were resisted by his parents. Determined to join up Michael wrote to the War Office. The immediate response stated that, if his father and headmaster would vouch for him, he could attend Aberdeen University for six months prior to consideration for a commission in RA, RE or R Signals. With the required assent grudgingly given his first steps to a military life began. Having chosen Royal Artillery Michael left at once for 9 Field Training Regiment in Harrogate as a Gunner to collect uniform and then on to Aberdeen – it was October 1940. Six months later he was at OCTU, first at Larkhill and then Alton Towers, and was commissioned in 53 (London) Medium Regt in October 1941. The next three years were spent in Lincolnshire and Scotland preparing for the landings in Normandy. The regiment was now part of 4 Army Group Royal Artillery. Recalling the final days leading to D-Day, Michael said: “Above all there was suppressed excitement everywhere. Between 1 and 4 June we were embarked on several LSTs (Landing Ship Tank). By 10am on 6 June we had a grandstand view of the coast being battered by broadsides from escorting battleships. These were joined by salvoes of rockets and fire from the40self-propelled field guns of 3 Division as their

LCTs (Landing Craft Tank) approached shore. Anchored some two miles off with uninterrupted view we awaited our turn. What a wonderful target for enemy aircraft we presented! One plane strafing the beach was de-tailed by ground flak. Otherwise to our great surprise the Luftwaffe were largely absent. Through the gloaming and between the dunes off Queen section of Sword beach we wound ashore to bring our troop into action. As the only guns then in the beachhead heavier than field artillery we were soon to commence firing our first M (regimental) target in support of the Norfolks of 185 Brigade, as heavy opposition forced them back from Lebisey Wood. Soon my command post map was featuring elements of anything up to five panzer divisions and so it was to continue for many long weeks. A night or two after landing my troop suffered its first loss. A Heinkel 111, easily discernible in the searchlights and the streams of tracer fire, dropped a string of bombs across our gun position. Several fires were started necessitating the rapid movement of charges and shells. Only after order was restored did we find our Bren AA position had been hit, halfburying 19-year-old Danny Higgins and killing 37-year-old Bill Benn, a long-serving TA soldier known to us all. Weller, our BSM was in tears of rage at the loss of his old friend.” With several small tactical moves we remained in the eastern corner of the beachhead, supporting many attacks, until Caen, the D-Day objective, at last fell. Advancing we occupied the Colombelles

factory area, where we received a lot of mortar fire. One bomb scored a direct hit on Sgt Mayes’ gunpit. Only one man was killed, Danny Higgins, tragically the boy who had survived earlier. His grave lies not far from that of Bill Benn in Ranville cemetery. After a brief spell in the marshy area of the River Dives the regiment was off towards Falaise with the Polish armoured division of the Canadian army. Sadly at Hubert Folie another young gunner, Richardson, was fatally wounded. He is buried far to the west beyond Arromanches. Before the dash to the Seine the regiment took part in the siege and capture of le Havre. It then hardly stopped until reaching Antwerp and the Scheldt. Then on it went to Breda and Tilburg before settling on the Maas near Overloon. There followed many dreary weeks here and all were glad to go to la Hulpe, south of Brussels, for a Christmas rest. No sooner there but the regiment found itself part of the reaction to the new German offensive through the Ardennes. With 29 Armoured Brigade it prepared to defend the Meuse. Michael’s battery was in action near Dinant but the German attack was held at this point. After first briefly following up the counterattack towards Bure and Grupont Michael found himself back on the Maas until the massive attack on the Siegfried Line was launched. That over, the regiment was in support of the final airborne crossing of the Rhine at Rees. It was here that Michael made the decision to volunteer for training as an Air Observation Post (AOP) pilot. This entailed initial training of three months at an RAF station in UK, in his case at Cambridge. He passed his solo on the Tiger Moth in the average time of 10 hours, then he was down to Andover in Hampshire to convert to the Auster, the light aircraft of the AOP officer. Michael put up his wings, the Army Flying Badge, in October 1944. He was now married and a Captain. His final posting was to 652 AOP Squadron RAF, his place of duty being the RAF station in Celle not far from Hanover,

which had been one of the main stations of Goering’s Luftwaffe. Michael’s demobilisation was in October 1946. He had decided regretfully to leave the armed forces knowing that his wife was due to have her first child early the next year. Arriving in Hull from Hook of Holland he brought home one bottle each of brandy, Cointreau and Champagne to celebrate survival of six years without a scratch – and was charged duty on each! In March 1947 the Territorial Army was reformed and Michael was back to join his local gunner regiment. As he says: “Some people never learn! Ever since I finished wearing a uniform, I still tend to look at the countryside in terms of its possible aptitude to accommodate a troop of guns or to form a suitable landing strip!” Michael returned to Normandy in June this year, where he toured with fellow WWII veterans and members from the general public on a special D-Day Remembrance Tour, arranged by The Royal British Legion (RBL). “CLEAR OUT YOUR CLUTTER” Headway charity appeals for Stock Donations

A

charity that helps people rebuild their lives following brain injury has appealed to members of the local community to donate their unwanted items to their Pershore shop. All profits from the Headway charity shop at 54 High Street, Pershore, go towards supporting individuals and families affected by brain injury, helping people relearn lost skills and adapt to a life that may be forever changed. The shop is very popular within the local community with good value pricing and exciting products, which in itself has brought new challenges as the charity tries to keep the shop stocked with high-quality items. We are appealing to the local community to generously donate unwanted items, especially Autumn / Winter clothing and local businesses to consider setting up a donation station on their premises for employees to Clear Out Their Clutter, this will allow the shop to continue to sell

good quality products at great value prices. “As a charity, we rely entirely on the generous nature of the local community in order to keep our shelves fully stocked,” said Mandy, Manager of the Pershore Headway shop. "We have been extremely lucky over the last few years to have had such exceptional support from people in the town who have continued to drop off bags of wonderful items for us to sell – from clothes and accessories to toys, books, dvd’s, bric a brac and small electrical items, but as the shop continues to thrive, we now urgently need more donations. This is why we are launching this “CLEAR OUT YOUR CLUTTER” campaign to encourage people to donate to us." Anyone requiring donations to be collected please contact Mandy on:
