Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major
factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people
I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Dream Team to Transform your kitchen
C
reating your dream kitchen couldn’t be easier or more cost effective, say Mark Battin and wife Dionne of Dream Doors. Dream Doors offers a huge range of made-to-measure replacement doors, drawers and worktops giving you a new-look kitchen in as little as two days. “Many clients are turning to us as they invest in their own homes rather than move house,” they said. “We offer a truly cost-effective solution. Why rip out functional cabinets when we can create a whole new look in a couple of days with no mess and no fuss? We have a full range of sinks and appliances too if you want to upgrade.” With homes in Worcester and the surrounding areas of Evesham and Pershore, varying in period from modern new builds to Georgian houses and Victorian terraces, Dionne and Mark use their expertise
to help you choose a style that not only compliments your tastes but that of the property too. “We have an extensive range of door sizes which can be vital when working in character properties. We’re confident that whatever space you have in your kitchen we’ll listen to your needs and turn it into something special.” The couple have a wealth of experience in the kitchen industry and have opened their showroom at the Tything in Worcester. Also working with Mark and Dionne Battin is their senior sales consultant Jean Clutterbuck. Jean has 27 years’ experience in kitchen sales and design in Worcester. Her speciality is helping people turn their ideas into reality. She said: “I love working with Dream Doors because it allows me to have complete flexibility with my designs as we can make any size of door and unit for a fantastic bespoke finish.”
Mark and Dionne continued: “As Dream Doors is part of a national network of more than 45 locally-owned franchised showrooms we can offer our clients the advantages of a large and experienced company alongside our personal, friendly approach, using local suppliers and our own fitters. If you do decide to completely renovate your kitchen then Dream Doors can design, supply and fit your complete kitchen. Our showroom in Worcester has a good range on display so it is worth dropping by for a chat. We are also happy to carry out home visits anywhere in the Worcestershire area and bring along samples of our kitchens and designs to you too.” Take a look at their website and then give them a call for a no-obligation quote today.

Hello and welcome to the March issue of
Grapevine TThe Worcestershire
Once again we have an issue packed with interesting articles and new advertisers. If your house or garden could do with sprucing up, have a look at the article on page 32 and give Nikki a call. Also new this month are Steve Randle Installations, Dapper Doggies, ProSmart and the Tint Shop, so look out for their adverts as you browse the magazine. As always, the Cats Protection need your help, this time with moving premises. If you've got some spare time, give them a call - it will be greatly appreciated. Still with the Cats Protection, we thought you'd like an update on the two cats featured last month, Choccie and Willow - Choccie has found a new home, but Willow is still waiting, so, how about it ...? And with Mother's Day coming up this month, why not treat Mum to lunch at your local pub: both The Berkeley and The Anchor have specials on offer for Mother's Day. Happy reading.

W
hen it comes to love, staff at West Midland Safari Park are well versed in the age-old tradition. Indeed, love is lavished on their animal charges each and every day, none more so than on their adorable 9-month old bouncing baby elephant calf. Such is the mischievous character of baby elephant Sutton, that when keepers proudly presented him with a single red rose to celebrate his first St. Valentine's Day, he didn't quite know whether to eat it, play with it or stand on it. After a couple of minutes the once beautiful crimson rose started to look a bit worse for wear. That didn't stop Sutton scooping up the rose in his tiny trunk and appear to offer it to his 23-year old mum, 'Five'. Bob Lawrence, Director of Wildlife, said "Sutton is intrigued by anything new and different that happens in the elephant reserve. As a treat we have just started giving him bananas, which he soon learnt was something much more enjoyable than just a plaything. After a short while, he did begin to throw the rose around for a time so we decided we had better rescue it". Sutton was born at West Midland Safari Park on 5th May 2014 following a 22-month pregnancy. He is only the second baby elephant in the world to be born following artificial insemination using semen, taken from a wild elephant, which was frozen and stored in a laboratory.

West Midland Safari Park has two female elephants, Five and Latabe. They have lived at the Park since 1998 when they were just six and five years old respectively, measuring barely 5ft to the shoulder. Orphaned by the shooting of their mothers at a few days old, Five and Latabe were hand reared in a private elephant orphanage near Pretoria, South Africa, with countless others suffering the same plight. When the babies outgrew the orphanage, new homes were sought, hence their arrival at West Midland Safari Park. West Midland Safari Park and the Adventure Theme Park are open every day from Saturday 14th February 2015 until Friday 6th November 2015. The standard admission is £19.99 for adults, £14.99 for children aged 3-15 years and £17.99 for concessions. Children under the age of 3 years are admitted free of charge. Prices include admission to the four- mile, self-drive safari, Discovery Trail exhibits, animal encounters, African Village and live shows. Admission also includes a free return ticket. Amusement rides charged extra in all cases. Further information by phone 01299 402114 or website www.wmsp.co.uk

eople often believe that patients only go to a hospice to spend their final days, but in fact, St Richard’s Hospice cares for the majority of its patients in their own homes or local community, and supports their loved ones. The hospice helps those with life-threatening illnesses to make the best of their lives despite the effects of the illness. The care provided is tailored to the individual needs of each patient and cares for the whole person: physically, emotionally and spiritually. Over the last year, St Richard’s has cared for almost 450 patients and family members in the Evesham, Pershore and Broadway areas. The hospice has developed a 24-hour service to ensure that patients and their loved ones get expert advice and care whenever they need it. Specialist teams offer compassionate care for patients in the hospice’s In-patient Unit, at Day Hospice or in their own home. The care provided by the hospice enables patients to stay at home in the end stage of their illness if this is their wish. St Richard’s Hospice is keen to make it as convenient as possible for patients to access hospice services within their own community. 16
For example, patients registered with Abbotswood Medical Practice in Pershore are invited to attend a special St Richard’s Hospice clinic at the surgery. As St Richard’s Community Nursing Services Manager, Vanessa Gibson, explained: “Our nurses have specialist knowledge and experience in caring for patients at the end of their lives. We visit patients and their families in their own homes to offer advice on relieving symptoms, supporting patients to make choices about their care and planning ahead for their death.” St Richard’s Hospice understands that the emotional impact extends beyond the individual and so also offers care and support to the whole family. Social workers and counsellors support patients and their loved ones to come to terms with a diagnosis, learn how to make the most of the time they have left, and offer bereavement support. Support is offered in a way that meets each individual’s needs, with both group work and one to one support available. All hospice services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. St Richard’s Hospice is an independent charity and relies on donations to fund the care of seven out of ten patients and family members.

5 Metabolism Myths - Busted!
S
ometimes, your metabolism works against you even when you think you’re doing everything right. It’s time you took a good, hard look at how your metabolism really works. Check out the metabolism myths below and then use your new knowledge to put your metabolism to work … Myth 1: Metabolism Works from 9 to 5 Difficult as it may be to believe, your body’s metabolism does not stop working when you do. In fact, your metabolism works all day, every day. If it didn’t, you wouldn’t even have the energy to get out of bed in order to read this article. (you are out of bed, aren’t you?) Also the time of day that you eat isn’t what makes you gain pounds. It’s what you eat. So if you think you can get away with eating that quarter-pounder with cheese, bacon, mayo and bun; a large order of greasy fries; and a 32-ounce milkshake without any consequences—just because you ate it at lunch and not late at night—think again! Eat smart all day long, have a healthy snack at night if necessary and then sleep well, knowing your metabolism is doing its thing even while you’re catching some zzzz’s.
20
Myth 2: It Can’t Be Controlled You’ve probably met someone who seems to be able to eat anything they want without gaining weight. You may have even dreamed of having such a metabolism. Well, there’s good news. You may not have the metabolism that lets you do that just yet, but you can work towards it. Help boost your metabolism by lifting weights, getting a good night sleep, eating enough protein to power you through the day and drinking plenty of water. Want something more than water? Here’s another smidgen of good news: a little caffeine in your daily intake will help you get rid of calories faster than going without. Just make sure your caffeine isn’t bathed in sugar and unnecessary calories. Myth 3: Skinny Folks Have Higher Metabolism Yes, a high metabolism can help you burn more calories than a low metabolism. But don’t let that fool you into thinking the skinniest people around have the highest metabolism. Quite the contrary. If the thinnest individuals had the highest metabolism, they would likely be dangerously

underweight. As it is, when you are very thin, your metabolism will likely be lower, as there’s not much of you to burn away safely. However, you shouldn’t grab the ice cream tub in order to put on extra pounds to up your metabolism. Instead, focus on adding muscle pounds via the weight room. Myth 4: Getting Old Makes Your Metabolism Go Bye-Bye There is a bit of truth to this myth. As you age, your metabolism will drop a tiny bit. Not enough to make a meaningful difference, but it does drop. Much of this decrease (again— it is almost negligible) is due to the typical muscle loss that accompanies aging. Want to curb your body’s age-related drop in metabolism? Include resistance training in your exercise routine. As you age, keep up the weight training and you’ll keep your metabolism strong and steady throughout all the stages of life. In the event it does drop a little, you’ll be in such good shape you won’t 3 notice. Myth 5: You Can Eat Your Way to Higher Metabolism Occasionally, the world is taken by a weightloss idea that is so simple you’d be a moron
not to give it a try. One of these recent ideas is that you can eat or drink certain things to boost your metabolism and lose weight with greater ease. While eating peppers on a regular basis and drinking gallons of green tea each week offers some health benefits, it won’t do more than temporarily boost your metabolism. Approximately half an hour after consuming these supposed metabolism mega-boosters, the boost is over and you’re back to your normal metabolism. A normal, well-balanced diet is a much better option. When it comes to achieving and maintaining your most effective metabolism, a consistent and challenging exercise routine is key. Call or email today and I’ll get you started on an exercise program that will take your metabolism to the next level. By three months' of maturation, Cashel Blue will have broken down to a richer, fuller and rounder flavour developing greater creaminess as it matures up to six months. Cashel Blue has a white paste when young turning increasingly towards a buttery yellow as it matures. Throughout this paste there is a blueing often referred to as having marble-like pattern. Established in 1984 and developed at a time when softer blue cheeses were a rarity in the English speaking world, Cashel Blue has set the trend as an alternative to the traditional and stronger Blue Stilton.

Cats Protection are moving house ...
A
fter nearly three decades of rehoming thousands of cats from the adoption centre within Dogs Trust grounds at Wickhamford, Evesham Cats Protection are moving. This is the result of an imminent redevelopment of Evesham Dogs Trust. Those of you that have visited the cats rescue centre recently will have noticed that there has been a reduced number of cats. This was a conscious decision as we have been waiting for confirmation on the property that we are moving to. We are now pleased to say building work has started on the new rescue centre. At present we are not going to say exactly where we are relocating to, but can say it is literally just up the road from where we are now. A building and grounds are being prepared for volunteers and accommodation for the cats. This is going to be a big change for everyone involved, but it is a larger working environment
and will be purpose designed, making it a change for the better. For the next few months the rescue centre will be limited as to the number of cats we can take in, so please be patient if you have a cat in need of rehoming. Extra pairs of hands will also be needed with the move and running the new centre, so please contact us if you have some free time to help. Keep a look out on our website and Facebook page - eveshamcats - for updates on the move. Over the last 30 years the local public have been generous in their support of Evesham Cats Protection. We hope that with the move this loyal support will continue during this time of change. We look forward to seeing everyone at the new rescue centre when it is completed in the next few months. rozen pipes and lukewarm radiators are two of the most common problems that can cause your heating system to run inefficiently or too breakdown altogether. By carrying out a few simple maintenance checks yourself, you can stay warm and save money. Scott Johnston, owner of Bredon based plumbing and heating engineers, Johnston Scotia, explains how: “Before winter really sets in, we always advise customers to check all pipes for leaks and to make sure outdoor pipes are well-insulated. If the pipes are frozen, water can back up the condensing pipe and soak internal electrical parts on the boiler. Frozen pipes can also stop the boiler from firing up. “When the temperature drops to minus figures, it is always a good idea to keep the central heating switched on low. This helps to keep the pipes warm which in turn will help stop them from freezing. We also suggest you make sure pipes are sufficiently insulated against frost. Pipe insulation can be bought from most major DIY stores. It is both in-expensive and simple to install. Carrying out these two simple steps will go a long way to stopping the problem of frozen pipes. “You can also purchase an electronically controlled trace heater, called a Frost Sentry. A Frost Sentry is designed to prevent the condensate pipe in condensing boilers or, air conditioning units from freezing in temperatures below 2 degrees. It constantly monitors the external temperature and if it falls below 2.5 degrees, the Frost Sentry will activate and warm the inside of the condensate 26
pipe. The lower the external temperature, the warmer the temperature in the pipe.” What Else Can I Do To Make Sure My Heating Runs Efficiently? “The easiest thing to do is to make sure your radiators are always running hot. Lukewarm radiators or, if the radiator only gets hot at the bottom but not at the top, usually means there is air trapped in the system. “Before calling out an engineer, you should open the valve which is usually found at the top of the radiator slightly until water runs through. This is called ‘bleeding the radiator’. You will need a radiator bleed key and it is always a good idea to place a bowl underneath the valve to catch any water and, to wrap an old cloth or towel around the bleed key when opening the valve. “Once the water is running through, you can close the valve. This should solve the problem of lukewarm radiators. If, the problem persists, I would recommend you call a Gas Safe qualified engineer.” Scott also recommends you clean the central heating system using a Power Flush. A Power Flush will flush out sludge and scale and helps optimise the heat output of radiators, which in turn can prevent boiler and pump failure and, even help lower heating bills. “You must always follow the manufacturers instructions and if you do have to call out an engineer always make sure they are Gas Safe registered.” Scott adds.

Grow your own fruit
I
f you are tired of buying the same old bag of apples and pears from your local supermarket, and would like to try something more exciting and unusual, then growing your own garden produce is the perfect solution. Not only is there a wealth of different fruits and berries to try, they are relatively simple to grow and harvest. If you want something a bit more adventurous in your garden than your typical apple tree, then read on to discover all the weird and wonderful fruit you can grow right on your doorstep. Medlar: You may not be familiar with this hardy fruit, which looks like a cross between an apple and a rose-hip, but you might be surprised to learn that it is relatively easy to grow. It has to be said that the fruit itself is an acquired taste if eaten raw, as it can be quite tart, but it is a great ingredient in jams and jellies. Plant these from November to March. Mirabelle: This is a type of plum, distinguished by its dark yellow skin, which is often flecked in appearance. They are known for being very sweet and full of flavour and are often used in jams and pies, while the juice can be made into wine. Having said this, they are a great fruit to eat uncooked as the flavour is so sweet. Plant these from late November to early March. Greengage: Part of the plum family, these small oval fruits are known for their pale green skin and sweet flavour. As a result they are often used in jams. The trees prefer full sun but are tolerant of most soil types, provided they are well-drained. Plant from November to March.
Boysenberry: A berry with the flavour of wild blackberry is the Boysenberry, which has large, purple raspberry-like fruit that ripen in July. Boysenberries grow on low, trailing plants and are characterized by their soft texture, thin skins, and sweet-tart flavour. Mature fruits leak juice very easily and can start to decay within a few days of harvest. Being drought-resistant means that boysenberry canes are ideally suited to sandy or stony free-draining ground Purple Filbert: Not a fruit tree, but a nut tree. It is an attractive and useful green-leafed shrub or small tree for hedges, with good crops of nuts. The variety usually grown in gardens is purple with opulent deep purple foliage that rivals any other shrub of this shade. The male catkins, suspended from the bare branches before the new spring foliage develops, are reddish-purple with yellow highlights, and an attractive feature in themselves. Unusually for an ornamental variety, the edible nuts (filberts) are produced in good quantities. Pluot: A type of hybrid from the plum and apricot family, but it shows more plum than apricot characteristics. Because of this, the pluot tree needs growing conditions similar to a plum tree. The fruit's exterior has smooth dark-red skin closely resembling that of a plum and the flesh is often deep red or orange-coloured. The trees will flower in spring and bear fruit in the summer. Pluots do not grow in alkaline soil, and they require adequate drainage. Pruning helps keep the weak branches of the tree from breaking under the weight of the fruit.

A Day With Birds of Prey article & photos by Pamela Green
T
he most enjoyable sight for me, is to see birds and animals in their natural habitats.
I have always had an interest in birds of prey, but never been able to see them close up. So I was delighted to find a falconry centre quite close, at Hagley, West Midlands, and that conservation is an important part of the centre’s work. They also have a bird sanctuary with a small rehabilitation unit on site. This enables them to take in many sick and injured wild birds of prey, successfully care for them, and then release them back into the wild. They have some amazingly fast falcons, and some spectacular eagles and kestrels. The buzzards and vultures were huge, but my favourite of all the birds was the owls. I think I’ve always loved the owls, especially the tawny owl, but never realised just how many different species of owl there are. When my husband and I arrived at the centre, there was a display in progress. It was simply amazing to watch members of the public handling the birds; to see the birds up close, watch them fly, and learn more about them was wonderful. 36
We had a fantastic day, and it was so nice to see the birds out of their cages. It was also great to see families, especially the children, enjoying the talks and gaining knowledge. The centre also has many volunteers and they all said that it was a privilege to work at such a well maintained and well-run centre. The centre has been offering Falconry displays for the past 15 years but by far the most popular choice seems to be the Falconry Experiences, where you can spend a day, learn how handle the birds and master this fascinating sport at first hand. The falconry centre is a great day out. The birds are wonderful and obviously very well loved and looked after. The handlers are great and have over twenty-one years of experience and knowledge. They are always available to answer questions, and make your experience outstanding. So, if you want a truly amazing experience, then you too should visit a Falconry Centre. March!
article by Brian Joyce
M
arch - aka Martius - is the third month in our current and Julian calendar, but was first in the Roman one. Martius (or Mars) was known more recently as the Roman God of War although he actually started life as God of fertility, who along with others like Ceres and Cybele oversaw the onset of spring and encouraged the continuation of life and fertility.
In Slovenia, the traditional name is sušec, meaning the month when the soil is dry enough to be cultivated. In Finnish it is called maaliskuu, which is from maallinen kuu meaning 'when the earth finally becomes visible under the snow'. So there you go, cultivation and springy things, through and through – March. What a busy little month it is, we cram a lot into those 31 days! An interesting month … a month of changes. Things really happen in March. First day of spring, the Vernal equinox (clocks go forward – British Summer time); poor old Julius got taken out on the Ides of March (15th) in 44 BC. This month also plays host to St David’s Day and St Patricks Day ... break out the daffodils and shamrocks ... let’s party and hold a parade. The saying “in like a lion and out like a lamb” is all about the weather in March. The month greets us with a lion’s roar of inclement weather, and then 46
leaves us meekly, with the gentle lamb-like days of spring warmth. Hares mate during this spring month when female hares can be seen “boxing” (striking another hare with her paws) off a male to prevent the act of mating – hence “Mad as a March hare”. Other interesting facts and dates for your consumption include the birth of Vincent van Gogh in March1853; the invention of the elastic band 1885; Coca Cola bubbled into existence in 1886; the Football League kicked off in 1888; the introduction of the 30mph speed limit in March 1935; the birth of Elmer Fudd and Porky Pig in 1947, and Heathrow Airport took flight in 1948. Cadburys brought us their delicious chocolate in March 1831, the game of Monopoly got started in 1903, Dennis the Menace was ‘born’ in 1951 – all in the month of March! And did you know that our cousins across the pond have a Pi Day in March to celebrate this mathematical concept. March starts on the same day of the week as November every year and it ends on the same day of the week as June every year. If you think these are a little off kilter, try these on for size: Save a Spider Day is March 14th; National Older Persons Employment Week is the second week of the month; you should celebrate Plan A Solo Vacation Day on 1st March, and last, but by no means least … get that smile working in readiness for the International Day of Happiness on 20th March. As a Sagittarian - born in November - personally I find events such as Remembrance Day (Poppy Day) and Guy Fawkes much more interesting, so watch this space later in the year ... !

So she asks him why he is staring. He replies: 'Sister, I have a question to ask you but I don't want to offend you.'
'Well,' says the cabbie, 'I've always had a fantasy to have a nun kiss me.'

A cabbie picks up a nun. She gets into the cab, and notices that the very handsome cab driver won't stop staring at her.
The nun replies, 'My son, you cannot offend me. When you're as old as I am and have been a nun as long as I have, you get a chance to see and hear just about everything. I'm sure that there's nothing you could say or ask that I would find offensive.'

The Cabbie & The Nun
She responds, 'Well, let's see what we can do about that. Number one, you have to be single, and number two, you must be Catholic.' The cab driver is very excited and says, 'Yes, I'm single and I'm Catholic!' 'OK' the nun says, 'Pull into the next alley.' The nun then proceeds to fulfil his fantasy with a kiss that would make a hooker blush. But when they get back on the road, the cab driver starts crying. 'My dear child,' says the nun, 'why are you crying?' 'Forgive me' says the cabbie, 'but I have sinned. I lied and I must confess: I'm married and I'm Jewish.' 'That's okay,' says the nun, 'I lied too: my name is Kevin and I'm going to a Halloween Party.'
