Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people

I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Hello and welcome to the September edition of

TThe Villager September ... the children are back at school, summer is almost over and autumn is just around the corner. This month we've got tips on how to train your dog, a health day in Malvern, and a teacher who loves her work so much, she's offering private tuition to anyone who wants to improve their knowledge of English. St Richard's Hospice are again running their Write a Will campaign, so if you don't already have a Will, then give them a call and help support a very worthwhile charity. As always, Cats Protection are looking for homes for their "residents" in particular, homes for the often overlooked black or black and white cats. If you are looking for a fun day out, why not take a drive to the West Midland Safari Park. And if you entered last month's competition then have a look on page 33 to see if you are one of our lucky winners.

The Blonde who Hunted Alligators After becoming very frustrated with the attitude of a particular shopkeeper, the young blonde declared, 'Well, then, maybe I'll just go out and catch my own alligator and get a pair of alligator shoes for free!' The shopkeeper replied with a sly smile, 'Well, little lady, why don't you go give it a try?' The blonde headed off to the swamp, determined to catch an alligator. Later in the day, the shopkeeper was driving home, and spotted the young woman standing waist deep in the murky water, shotgun in hand. He saw a huge 9-foot gator swimming rapidly toward her. With lightning reflexes, the blonde took aim, shot the creature and hauled it up onto the slippery bank.

A Birdwatcher’s Heaven and More

I

article & photography by Pamela Green

f you love wildlife you will be amazed at the enjoyment you find at the Wildfowl & Wetland Trust at Slimbridge. WWT’s mission is to conserve wetlands and their biodiversity. Sir Peter Scott was drawn to Slimbridge by the flocks of wild geese that winter here and in 1946 he founded WWT.

designed for disabled access. As I wandered along the main walkway I was delighted to see all kinds of birds eating out of visitors hands. These fantastic creature wander around in amongst the visitors, and some fly off. Within my first ten minutes I saw many different kinds of ducks, swans, and geese, and lots of baby chicks.

In the reception area I was simply astounded by the amount of information and encouragement given to the children by volunteers. Each child is given a “Children’s checklist of birds.” The list consists of named birds, descriptions plus a picture of the bird, and the children are encouraged to find each one. Birdseed can be purchased for £1 and you are instructed to hold the grain in the palm of your hand and let the birds come to you. You can also join the volunteers for guided walk around the park, which is also

I know this chaos is probably not what the genuine birdwatcher wants to see but there are quiet places especially for them with beautiful views over lakes and wetlands. 325 Hectares of worldclass wetlands, set against the Severn Estuary is home to a wealth of wildlife. The South Lake covers an area of 24 acres, including a deep-water area, some large gravel islands designed to attract waders in spring, summer and autumn, and a duck marsh where annual wetland plants provide food and nesting sites for the birds. winter the entire area is flooded and forms one huge wetland. Common Terns and occasionally Artic and Black Terns, stop to feed during the spring and autumn migrations. Birdwatchers will also see, little or Great Crested Grebes, Cormorant, Black-tailed Godwit, Ruff, Snipe, Wood Sandpiper and Oystercatchers. Among the wild ducks you will see Pintail, Shoveler, Wigeon, Gadwall, Teal, Tufted Duck and of course Mallard. The Barclay's Hide has a pathway especially designed for disabled visitors and overlooks a marsh created to attract waders such as Greenshank, Green Sandpiper and Teal. As each season arrives you can enjoy amazing wildlife close-up. From birdwatchers to families there is plenty to discover. So come on, lets go wild at Slimbridge. 11

ENGLISH TUITION Language & Literature

P

ershore resident and English teacher Rachel Lewis is now offering private tutoring and we met up with her recently to find out more about her and the tuiton she is offering.

Have you always been a teacher, and what got you interested in teaching in the first place? Yes, I’ve always been a teacher, and I suppose you could say it’s something of a family tradition as both my parents, as well as other members of my family are all teachers. But what really inspired me to go into teaching was one of my own teachers when I was at school. Like many children, I was struggling with mathematics and it was due primarily to the perseverance and patience of my maths teacher that finally helped me to get to grips with the subject. What made you choose English as your subject? I love reading, and would like to encourage the same interest in others. And in order to read and appreciate literature, you need to have a good grasp of English language, which is why I teach both English language and English literature. English language and English literature, although related, are in fact two separate subjects. Do you teach them separately or as inter-related subjects? I tend to focus on the specific need of each pupil, with the emphasis on English language as this is so important to our ability to communicate effectively. Where have you taught? I started my teaching career in Grimsby, which were I was born and brought up. Then I moved to Wiltshire where I taught for a while, before moving to Pershore in 2000. Since then I have taught at Bowbrook House in Peopleton, where I was Head of English, and now teach at a school in

Cheltenham, where I am Head of Special Education Needs (SENCo). Who are your lessons aimed at? Primarily 11 to 18-year olds, from Key Stage 3, through to GCSE and ‘A’ Level. Do you teach adults as well as children? It’s not something I have been asked to do in the past, but would be more than willing to offer tutoring to adults who would like to improve their communication skills and their appreciation of English literature. Would you be willing to teach people whose first language isn’t English and would like to improve their command of it – in other words, conversational English? Again, this is not something I have been asked to do before, but I would certainly be willing to do so. Spoken English can be a difficult language to master; a lot of people in non-English speaking countries learn to read and write English and can communicate well in this way, but lack the confidence to converse in English, so this would offer an interesting variation to my regular classes. And finally, how long are your lessons, and what are your fees? Each lesson is generally an hour long, and the fee is £25 per hour. In addition, I offer email support to students on their written projects.

The Problem with your Diet

F

or more than 20 years the media has bombarded us with a perpetual diet craze. An avalanche of fad diets are announced one after another as breaking news while producing zero true results.

Sure, you may lose 5, 10 or even 20 pounds on a fad diet ... but you'll gain it all back along with a little extra. How can I be so confident that your results will be short lived? It's actually a simple concept and once you understand it you will be forever saved from the tortures of yo-yo dieting.

Fad diets saddle you with unreasonable calorie restrictions and some even cut out entire food groups just to produce that short lived drop in weight - a process that is actually harmful to your health. The fad diets also ignore one major component to shaping up: exercise.

Most fad diets operate on one age-old premise: cut calories, cut calories, cut calories. By restricting the type and amount of food consumed the fad dieter usually sees an immediate drop in weight. If only it stopped there ...

But it doesn't stop there. Life continues and the fad dieter returns to their pre-diet eating habits with one major difference in their body due to the sudden drop in pounds. Their calorie requirements have become smaller.

 14

In practical terms this means that the dieter will begin gaining weight even though they are eating their normal pre-diet portions. And since exercise hasn't become a part of their routine, the unneeded calories will result in pounds gained. So what's a dieter to do? Find a brand new diet to follow-right? Wrong!
There is a way to drop pounds and firm your body, but you won't read about it in the next diet book or hear it on the news. The solution to your fad-dieting nightmare is a lifestyle change.

What is a lifestyle change? To change your lifestyle means to replace unhealthy habits with healthy ones and to do so consistently. It isn't something you do for a week or two, only to revert back to your old way - a lifestyle change redefines who you are. Changing your lifestyle from one that is unhealthy to one that is healthy will be the best thing that you ever do for yourself.

Fact: the shape of your body is the direct result of your current lifestyle.

So how do I change my lifestyle?
Most people who are unhappy with their bodies are really only holding on to a few bad habits. Once these habits are identified and then

replaced with healthy habits, their body naturally transforms from one that they loathe to one that they are proud of.

Here are the most prevalent unhealthy habits: • The habit of inactivity. Failing to exercise on a consistent basis is one of the most destructive obstacles to your health and figure. (The key word here is consistent. If you aren't exercising at least 3-4 times each week then you own this habit.) • The habit of overeating. Consuming calories in excess of your daily caloric needs is one of the main reasons that more adults are overweight today than ever before.

feel great.
You can transform yourself into the person that you've always wanted to be. It's Just a Number! We spend so much time worrying about getting the number on the scale to drop that it's easy to get discouraged when your weight loss slows for a time. When you workout hard and eat right your body gains muscle while losing fat - this isn't shown by the number on the scale, it's shown by inches lost, in the way your clothes fit better than ever and in how you look and feel amazing. Stop obsessing with the scales and start focusing on how you look and feel.

• The habit of empty calories. Filling your diet with foods that hold little or no nutritional value is a great way to expand your waist. (Hint: if a food item is made up of mainly sugar and/or fat, consider it 'empty' calories.)

Sometimes it DOES take a Rocket Scientist!! [true story?!!] Scientists at Rolls Royce built a gun specifically to launch dead chickens at the windshields of airliners and military jets all travelling at maximum velocity. The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields. American engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the windshields of their new high speed trains. Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the American engineers. When the gun was fired, the engineers stood shocked as the chicken shot out of the barrel, crashed into the shatterproof shield, smashed it to smithereens, blasted through the control console, snapped the engineer's back-rest in two and embedded itself in the back wall of the cabin like an arrow shot from a bow ... The horrified Yanks sent Rolls Royce the disastrous results of the experiment, along with the designs of the windshield and begged the British scientists for suggestions. Rolls Royce responded with a one-line memo: "Defrost the chicken."

T

he Anchor Inn in Wyre Piddle has recently seen a change in management, and is now being run by Ian and Andrea Devine, both of whom have had many years’ experience running similar establishments. Ian and Andrea are keen to let people know that The Anchor is now open again, so we asked them to tell us a little about the pub, and their plans for it. “Dating back to the 17th century, The Anchor Inn pub in Wyre Piddle near Pershore has a gently sloping, riverside terraced garden on the River Avon with mooring facilities, looking out onto Bredon Hill. With plenty of outdoor seating for Al Fresco dining on the terrace, we offer pleasant surroundings overlooking the river where you can enjoy an expertly prepared meal, snack or just a refreshing drink. Our restaurant seats 22 and is suitable for private dining; our relaxed lounge/bar seats 30 and is an ideal place for families to enjoy quality time together. We try to source all of our products locally; and our menu, which features smaller appetite options, caters for a variety of tastes. With the addition of the specials menu at weekends you’ll be sure to find a dish to tempt you. Our snug boasts an inglenook fireplace and has the feel of a traditional village inn where you can unwind whilst listening to the crackling fire. Our real Ales include London Pride, Doombar and

Timothy Taylor which we keep to the highest standard. You will also find Peroni, Carling Extra Cold, San Miguel, Thatchers Gold, Aspall and Stowford Press. Since we took over the Anchor, we have made various improvements to the kitchen and cellar and have ongoing plans to enhance the appearance of both the interior and exterior décor. Theme nights are planned in the form of Halloween and a Hogmany for New Year, with others in the pipeline. We are also offering our riverside lounge area for private functions catering for up to 50 people with the option of a buffet or set menu. Having had experience in a variety of establishments over the last 15 years we realise the potential the Anchor has to be one of the most welcoming village inns in the Pershore area and we look forward to meeting you.” The Anchor Inn, on the main road through Wyre Piddle, is conveniently situated for local residents from Pershore, Lower Moor, Pinvin and various other nearby villages. Sunday lunches will also be on offer, so why not pop in and try some of the mouth-watering dishes on the menu. While you're there, don't forget to book for the Halloween Party on 31st October. And if you are thinking of sampling the Christmas Function menu, or booking for Christmas Day and New Year's Eve, there is a small deposit of £10 per person required.

The Cheeseboard 100 Barnard's Green, Malvern, WR14 3ND

Cambozola C

by Andrew Brooks

ambozola is a cow's milk cheese that is a combination of a French soft-ripened triple cream cheese and Italian Gorgonzola. A cross between Camembert and Gorgonzola, this cheese is creamy, moist and rich like a Camembert with the sharpness of Gorgonzola. It was patented and industrially produced for the world market by the large German company Champignon in the 1970s. The cheese was invented in around 1900 and is still produced by Champignon. In English-speaking countries, Cambozola is often marketed as blue brie.

It is a softripened cheese, with the insides revealing pockets of blue veining and a unique exterior of grey mold. It has a savoury, nutty flavor with undertones of sweetness. For a food connoisseur, the Cambozola is a great start into the world of Blue Cheeses. Try it with fruit, honey or a Chardonnay; also a great cheese at this time of year with fresh salads or on biscuits.

mystery apple tree is set to be launched through garden centres and specialist nurseries across the British Isles this autumn, having spent many years on a small island in the care of Benedictine nuns.

pink orchid-like blossom that will attract bees in the spring and help to pollinate other varieties. This is followed by a harvest of delicious dessert apples later in the year, with fruit that displays a rich pink colour, rose red flecks and shades of a soft ‘happy autumn' yellow."

The ‘new' variety named Little Pax® has a unique life story that started in the 1990s, when a single tree of unknown origin was gifted to St Cecilia's Abbey in Ryde on the Isle of Wight. The resident Benedictine nuns planted this little orphan in their peaceful gardens overlooking the Solent and tended to it; without knowing that it would produce the most beautiful blossom and a delicious dessert apple.

From very small beginnings, Frank P Matthews Limited now grows more than 500,000 fruit and ornamental trees annually and throughout the last 114 years, the business has been owned and managed by the same family.

Believing that this special gift should be shared, Sr Anselma Scollard from the Abbey approached Worcestershire-based growers Frank P. Matthews in 2010 to ask if the mystery apple tree might be propagated and sold nationwide. After stringent quality assurance trials, thousands of the new variety are being grown in nurseries along the banks of the beautiful River Teme in Worcestershire; in readiness for an official launch to the public at the nearby Malvern Autumn Show on 27th and 28th September. Charitable donations will be made by the grower to St Cecilia's Abbey, from the proceeds of every Little Pax® sold. Stephanie Dunn James from Frank P. Matthews Limited explains: "We were very flattered by the approach from Sr Anselma and fascinated to hear the charming life story for Little Pax®. As a wholesale grower of fruit and ornamental trees this represented a unique opportunity and we are delighted to be working with the Abbey. "Little Pax® is a stunning tree with abundant, white and

26

In 1901, Frank P Matthews borrowed £800.00 from his uncle and started growing trees on a few acres of rented land in Middlesex. In the early 1950's the business was found to be occupying land needed for the development of a new road network near to Heathrow airport, so the search was started for a new home. In 1956, they moved to the beautiful River Teme valley where they now tend 450 acres of fertile nurseries nestled across the borders where Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Shropshire meet. Stephanie Dunn James continues: "To taste, Little Pax® is rich, aromatic and has a sweet essence of Honeydew melon, as well as an almost champagne quality that is subtle but lingering. The fruit will also keep really well into winter if stored properly. The combination of beautiful spring blossom, delicious autumn fruit and a charming life story make Little Pax® a very special tree." Little Pax® will be available to buy or order through garden centres and specialist nurseries nationwide. A list of your local stockists can be found easily using the ‘Tree Finder' service on the growers own website www.frankpmatthews.com.

aving a lush green paddock is something we all aim to achieve for our animals to graze and for us to gaze on. There is no big secret to getting this other than looking after your land & don’t over graze it – something we all fall foul of from time to time. However, you can really give your land a boost by regular topping & harrowing, both of which help to prevent the growth of weeds. Why? Well topping (cutting the tops off the grass) maintains healthy grass; it ensures that the grass stays lush, sweet and nutritious. Harrowing works by detangling the weeds and the grass, pulls the dead plants out, scuffles & slits the ground to help loosen the soil and aerate (get oxygen in to) it, so producing better quality grass. When the grass is good there’s no room for weeds! Need some advice? Well, help is at hand from local

company, JM Paddock & Field Maintenance. Run by Jordan Massey, who holds a Diploma in Farm Mechanisation from Hartpury College (partner with the University of West England) his company offers a high quality and professional service to suit all your requirements, from one off jobs to monthly contracts. Using Agricultural ATVs and the most advanced Logic implements, Jordan provides what he describes as “compact farming at its best”. “Both topping and harrow-

ing are quick and easy jobs but pay dividends for your land. Our new spring tine harrow has different settings, which allows you to grade the job from subtle to harsh depending on what your land requires and is perfect for longer, tangled grassland” says Jordan. “It’s quick, easy and affordable, minutes not hours and so many benefits! All our machinery is compact so small access to fields and paddocks with trees are easy to maintain. It’s time to treat yourself and your paddock to some TLC – it’s cheaper by contract.”

Fun in the Sun for Sutton . . .

I

t seems that it's playtime everyday for the new baby elephant born at West Midland Safari Park. What's more, during August he will have the chance to play even longer as the Park enjoys its Summer Nights season, which sees extended opening hours throughout the whole of the month.

During Summer Nights the safari drive-through will close at 7.00pm - the same time as last admission. The usual opening time of 10.00am remains the same. An evening Sea Lion Show is scheduled for 7.00pm and Discovery Trail exhibits will close at 9.00pm, along with the Theme Park rides.

Angela Potter, Deputy Director of Wildlife, said, "At three months old, Sutton really is proving to be a real water baby. Once the weather warmed up and we saw how much he enjoyed his bath time, we thought that a paddling pool would be the ideal treat for him. Once in place, it wasn't long before he took to it "like a duck to water", often rolling around until the pool was almost capsized and enjoying every minute".

The concept of staying open late during the peak holiday period was first trialed in 2007 and due to its popularity, it has become an annual event in the Parks' calendar ever since.

Angela, continued, "Whilst it is immensely enjoyable for Sutton - and indeed for anyone else that sees him playing - it is also extremely important enrichment. He has boundless energy, like most youngsters and it's good to see him ready for his night quarters. Mum 'Five' is extremely patient and she often just looks on as he splashes around in the pool and chases the beach ball". 32

The standard admission charge applies throughout Summer Nights: ÂŁ17.99 for adults, ÂŁ12.99 for children. This includes the 4-mile self-drive safari, along with Discovery Trail exhibits, African Village, Hippo Lakes, car parking and various talks and animal encounters. Admission prices also include a free return ticket. Theme Park rides are charged extra in all cases. Further information is available from the Park's official website www.wmsp.co.uk or by telephone 01299 402114.

. . . and life is perfectly beachy for safari meerkats

S

taff at West Midland Safari Park are continuously on the look out for new ways to provide enrichment for the busy little meerkats that live in the Park's African Village. This is often done by installing new logs filled with grubs for them to seek out, or by hiding little insects in the sand for them to find. On this occasion though, staff have introduced a special meerkat-sized 'sandman' for them to get to know and socialize with. Very popular he was too, particularly as the holidaying character arrived bearing gifts of the mealworm variety. Noel Carey, Head of the African Village exhibits, said, "Meerkats

are social little animals, who in the wild, live in 'mobs' of about 10-30 individuals. They have quite a defined social structure and each animal has a role within the group. There is the ever-present sentry, often seen perched on some high vantage point, always watching the skies for signs of predators; the foragers, gathering grubs and other food for the mob to eat; the babysitters, taking care of any pups in the underground burrow. The meerkats at West Midland Safari Park are immensely interesting and can be seen doing all this in their small groups in the African Village".

Winners of last month's baby elephant competition: Mrs V Gisbourne, Worcester Ms Pauline Routley, Redditch Mrs J K Dale, Peopleton Mrs J Westlake, Evesham Mr S Smith, Evesham Congratulations - your tickets are on the way to you.

www.wmsp.co.uk T: 01299 402114

West Midland Safari Park has a total of twenty-five meerkats, including two youngsters, which live in small groups in the African Village.

Appeal for Homes for LOCAL CATS

A

t Evesham Cats Protection, we are fortunate that our facilities allow prospective owners to view all our cats in one central place. However whilst this can be good for some of the cats, this is not the case for all of them. Sadly the black and black & white cats are often overlooked in favour of other coloured cats. Popular coloured cats such as ginger, tabby and grey are almost guaranteed a home quickly, whereas their not so colourful companions are left behind in our care, and can wait a long time for a new home. We are keen to encourage people to not just look at the colour of the cats' fur, but

36

to also look at the 'purr'sonalities that show through. Very often the black and white cats can be as mischievous as the cat food character, Felix. They all have individual characters and given the chance will appreciate a new home. The seven cats in the photos above came from a multi-cat household where we have in care a number of black and white cats and kittens all needing new homes. At present we have a large number of cats and kittens needing homes. If you are in a position to give a cat - of any colour - a new home then please contact us on 01386 833343 (office hours) or come and visit the cats at the Dogs Trust premises in Wickhamford.

Biscuit & Mouse Biscuit and Mouse (pictured above) are an affectionate pair of cats; they are very close so we would prefer them to be homed together. They would like a quiet home, where they can relax together.

Five Top Tips for Training Dogs

F

rom pooches to puppies, Dobermans and Great Danes to Labradoodles and Corgis, Britain is a bona fide nation of animal lovers, and K9s are one of our favourites of all pets. It's just a shame so many people have such difficulty keeping their furry friends under control. Shocking stories about dogs gone wild aside, it's safe to say that the vast number of owners do struggle to keep their best friend in check at all times. This is unsurprising, because irrespective of how housebroken they are, we're still talking about a species of animal here, with wildly different behavioural and social tendencies than we two-legged creatures have instilled into ourselves. As such, if they want to run off and chase that bird, then chances are they will try to do just that. It's in their nature. Nevertheless, a poorly trained dog is no good, and can easily become something of an embarrassment. Whether that's going to the toilet in inappropriate places or running riot in the pub, there's no denying we've all seen it happen, and as any expert will tell you, the solution isn't particularly easy. Successfully passing on obedience and good behaviour takes time and commitment, but don't be put off follow these simple rules and you won't go too far wrong ...

Show them what it means to be a good leader Dogs are highly perceptive and have a pack mentality. Set an example for how you want the animal to behave, in order for them to learn and replicate that. 40

Walks must involve discipline Particularly important with puppies. In order to ensure your hound doesn't wind up wrecking the house when nobody is watching, start the day with a disciplined walk, enough to let them work off some energy without returning overexcited. It's also a good idea to walk out of the house ahead of your dog when setting off, so as to show it who's boss. Understand your breed Partly thanks to man's penchant for and understanding of a dog's ability to work, each breed has a host of different personality traits and attributes. It's vital that you understand these in order to successfully train and balance your pet. Allow time for mental exercises, every day Here's where you can make a dog appreciate rules, boundaries and restrictions. Simply giving them a physical run-about isn't enough their minds need to be stimulated in order to take on board the instructions you're giving them. Assign your dog a task before it gets a treat It's no good rewarding the animal for doing nothing if you want to perfect training. By giving it something to do before offering a tasty snack, drink or toy, man's best friend begins to understand that enjoyable things don't come for free

Bishampton History Society Heritage Lottery Fund awards £10,000 to Bishampton History Society

B

ishampton History Society is celebrating an award of £10,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a First World War project. Awarded through HLF’s First World War: then and now programme, the project will focus on those who served from the village and the impact of the war on their rural community. The two year project, going through to November 2016, will involve an intensive programme of research, community events, displays, school projects, and interviews for oral history records. It will be launched at St James Church on Saturday, 13th September, from 10am to 4pm as part of Bishampton’s contribution to the National Heritage Open Days celebrations and will feature displays, photographs and activities from the First World War to appeal to local families, historians and visitors alike. The launch will include further displays and a workshop outside in the First World War bell tent, and an opportunity to take part in a free two hour workshop with a local artist where adults and children can recreate love tokens similar to those made by convalescing soldiers in the war, as well as guided tours explaining the village’s heritage. Chairman Mike Rickard said “Members of the Society were all involved and worked hard on putting an extremely detailed bid together with costs and timings. We are naturally delighted and excited that we’ve been approved for £10,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.”

Over the two year project period the Society's plans include: • a project mascot, Bishampton Bertie • interviewing members of the community about their familys' histories • working with schools on how to research ancestry and to produce commemorative art work • open days, and events to involve the local community and share memories, photographs and artefacts • planting a line of trees in memory of the village’s fallen heroes. The Society is appealing to people to get in touch if they have any memories, or artefacts from relatives or friends from the conflict to make the project as meaningful as possible.
