Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major
factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people
I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

150 facelifts in a year! Local company transforms kitchens for half the cost and leaves them ready to use in 48 hours!
G
etting a new kitchen can be a stressful experience. From high-pressure sales to lengthy delays, then dust, disruption and days of takeaways, the results don't always justify the hassle and expense. But customers in and around Worcester do have a choice. A welcome alternative that is half the cost of an average new kitchen, can be delivered within the month, and fitted in as little as a day. Since opening the doors to its showroom on The Tything just one year ago, Dream Doors Worcester has designed, delivered and refurbished 150 kitchens. A family business, run by husband-and-wife team Mark and Dionne Battin, and their Senior Sales Consultant Jean Clutterbuck, Dream Doors Worcester is part of a national franchised network of showrooms that stretches from Truro all the way up to Glasgow. Most customers are drawn to the company's time and money-saving kitchen makeovers. But full kitchens, innovative storage solutions and integrated appliances are also available. Mark and Dionne project manage each job from startto-finish and employ the services of approved and local installers.
seen, customers get a kitchen that looks brand new but without the outlay or stress of a complete refurbishment.” He adds: “All our doors are made-to-measure in the UK, and none are off-the-shelf. So when an order is taken, the doors are made specifically for that customer. We advise everyone to visit our showroom first so that they can look over the products we have on display. But makeovers can't be bought from the showroom alone, as we have to survey the existing kitchen to give an honest quotation for the work. All of our quotations are free, and there is no pressure on the customer if they decide to wait, or go elsewhere.” Dream Doors takes just a 50 percent deposit from customers on order, and guarantees all its doors and work free of charge. Reviews can be found on Checkatrade.com, an independent consumer monitoring scheme, where Dream Doors Worcester scores an average of 9.8 out of 10. “We've been doing this for a year now, but Dream Doors has been around for more than 15 years,” says Dionne. “We're part of a huge brand, the biggest name in kitchen facelifts. But unlike other national companies, our customers deal with us – the business owners – and I know this ownership leads to greater customer service.”
“We understand how daunting a large home improvement project can be,” says Mark. “But there's far less upheaval with our kitchen makeovers. A door swap takes just a day, Contact Dionne or Mark on 01386 898409, visit whereas adding new worktops and a sink might www.dreamdoors.co.uk or call into the take an extra day. And, by leaving the existing showroom at 42 The Tything on your next visit units in place and just changing what can be to the city. 6 To advertise call 01684 833715 or 07754 170286 or visit www.grapevinepublications.co.uk

ocal dog owners will be pleased to know that Ayley Harris of Fern's Cattery has recently extended the business and is now offering a full dog grooming service.
A dog owner herself, Ayley has had many years experience showing and training various breeds. With previous experience running dog training classes, both group and 1-on-1, and having a keen interest in grooming, Ayley decided it was time to take the plunge and add the dog grooming service to her repertoire of animal care. To formalise her qualification, Ayley attended a City & Guilds Level 3 Dog Grooming course at Evesham Dog Grooming Academy, where she trained with owner Carole Gowers. In addition, Ayley is also a member of the Pet Federation and the British Dog Grooming Association, and has a BTEC National Diploma in animal management. Talking about her new venture, Ayley said, "I really enjoyed my training course and met some lovely people and dogs. I'm very excited about my new business and look forward to welcoming new customers here at Grooming at Fern's. We've had lot of interest shown and already have some lovely clients.

Thank You To “The Villager” Regular readers of The Villager will remember that in May this year, we ran an article about a book entitled "No News from Guernsey". The book was written by Peter Jesson, about his cousin's life as a prisoner of war. As a follow on to this, we recently received a letter from Peter, with a wonderful "happy ending" to the story. Peter has very kindly agreed to let us print his letter:
Since the launch of my book “No News from Guernsey” I have received a number of pieces of information about my cousin Desmond Mulholland and some about the operation he was part of in July 1940. However the most amazing thing happened recently .... I received a phone call from a lady called Helen Salter from Little Comberton who had picked up a copy of “The Villager” in her work place. She came across the article about the book and could not believe her eyes because Desmond Mulholland was godfather to her sister, Jane Hall of Alcester. This came about because Jane and Helen's father, Harold Salisbury, was a police officer in London before WW2 and he was living at the YMCA hostel in central London where both my father and Desmond were living whilst studying for their chosen professions. Harold and Desmond struck up a friendship that was to last until Desmond's death in September 1945. After Desmond was captured by the Germans on occupied Guernsey and sent to many POW camps, the two of them communicated 12
many times. Jane and Helen not only have many of the letters from Desmond, they also have letters from other members of my family and some photographs of Desmond when he visited their family home in Elmley Castle. The most poignant letter Jane has in her possession is one that Desmond wrote to her before her christening, not long before his tragic death. All this had gone on for many years only a left to right: Helen Salter, matter of Peter Jesson & Jane Hall ten miles from where I now live and I never knew any of it! Jane and Helen visited my wife and I on Thursday 3rd July and what a fantastic meeting that was! Thank you to “The Villager” for printing my story. Peter Jesson Bishampton

Blooming Delicious: Edible Flowers
F
lowers aren't just visually sumptuous favours of nature, they can also add, colour, flavour, fragrance and intrigue to any menu or recipe. They are a wonderful way to brighten up both your garden and your dinner plate. The History Using edible flowers in cooking is a tradition that dates back centuries and has been observed in Greek, Roman and 15th century English cultures. The Romans used flowers frequently in the kitchen, flavouring wine (what else!) with roses and violets. The ancient Greeks predominantly used flowers and herbs for medicinal purposes. A typical herbal remedy, attributed to the Greek physician Dioscorides in the first century AD, used lavender flowers. In England, mixed herb and flower salads saw violets, daisies, primroses and borage as common ingredients, and cakes contained rosewater, pickled broom buds and elderflower vinegar. By the 18th century it was common to candy all sorts of flowers for use in cake decoration.
Flowers in the Kitchen Today Around the world it is relatively common to find flowers on your dining table. On 16
the Indian subcontinent Moringa oleifera flowers are a popular ingredient. Edible flowers seemed to disappear in the Victorian age, but in recent years have experienced something of a comeback due to recession, greater interest in selfreliance, foraging and gardening, and of course they have the benefit of being gorgeously romantic ingredients. There are a range of cookbooks that have been released providing numerous edible flower recipes and even restaurants, with L'Enclume in Cumbria, England, Noma in Copenhagen and F채viken in Sweden all boasting floral menus. Alice Waters is credited with single-handedly being responsible for reintroducing edible flowers to our palates. Other Edible Flowers There is a surprisingly large variety of edible flowers, but diners should be conscious that if they suffer asthma eating them could result in an allergic reaction. Flowers reported to be edible include: American elderberry, arugula, bergamot,

For the best possible flavour the flowers should be harvested early in the day and eaten shortly after being picked. If flowers are wilted, the petals pale or faded, or buds are unopened they will taste bitter. Many flowers may be eaten whole, but with some varieties it is best to remove bitter parts such as the stamens and stems.

Culinary Ideas
There are a number of comprehensive cookbooks dedicated to providing edible flower recipes and culinary inspiration, but some simple ways to introduce flowers into your cooking are to sprinkle them into green salads to add colour and an intriguing taste.
SparkyWilliams
Add small flower heads to ice cubes for a decorative item in beverages and punch, or use flowers in oils, vinaigrettes, jellies and marinades to add interesting and elaborate flavours to excite the palate. A note of warning however: not all flowers are edible, and some are very poisonous, so be sure to check before you try!

The Battle of Evesham

elected representatives and thus formed the first parliament as we know it today, with regular attendance by the commoners.
This battle was where Simon, the 6th Earl of Leicester lost the fight against the Royal forces which were lead by Prince Edward - the future King Edward I - and which took place on Greenhill on 4th August 1265. Aged 57, de Montfort and his son Henry were killed on the outskirts of the town in what is described as the ‘The murder of Evesham, for Battle there was none’.
Outnumbered by royal forces, de Montfort was cut down along with most of his 6000 strong army. The Battle of Evesham and de Montfort's life and achievements will be commemorated over the coming year culminating with a major re-enactment of his last battle beside the River Avon. Leading up to this will be a host of activities and events involving residents, schools and colleges, the Vale of Evesham Historical Society and the Simon de Montfort Society.
Simon de Montfort is generally recognised as the founder of the modern democratic or peoples parliament. He summoned representatives from the Boroughs to be their

heritage activities and tours on tap as well as armour and battle displays to watch, including a ‘to scale’ replica of the battle itself.
Clive Bostle gave a brief overview on behalf of the Simon de Montfort Society – a short taster of more that is to follow.
This is likely to be a massive local event and will attract people from all over the country and from abroad, and will be well worth a visit. I know I shall be there and I am very excited to find out more – will you be there too?
Antonia Coles, the launch organiser, described the framework of the events involved in this Medieval Festival over the coming year, including the various levels of engagement with local schools and colleges that are being planned. She then went on to describe a whole host of opportunities for local people and businesses to take part, promote, support and to exhibit or sponsor the various activities. These will include the usual blend of food and drink facilities (ale and cider tent as well as nonalcoholic), entertainment ranging from medieval music and markets (then and now) to dance, archery and falconry and much, much more. Competitions and craft fayres will feature, tours and treasure trails will be available,
If you want to get involved, help or support this major local event then visit The Battle of Evesham website www.battleofevesham.co.uk (coming very soon) or email Antonia at antonia@battleofevesham.co.uk. In Modesto, California, Steven Richard King was arrested for trying to hold up a Bank of America branch without a weapon. King used a thumb and a finger to simulate a gun. Unfortunately, he failed to keep his hand in his pocket ....! v Police in Los Angeles had a lucky break with a robbery suspect who just couldn't control himself during a lineup. When detectives asked each man in the lineup to repeat the words: "Give me all your money or I'll shoot", the man shouted, "That's not what I said!". v Last summer, on Lake Isabella which is located in the high desert, an hour east of Bakersfield, California, some folks - new to boating - were having a problem. No matter how hard they tried, they couldn't get their brand new 22-foot boat going. It was very sluggish in almost every manoeuvre, no matter how much power they applied. After about an hour of trying to make it go, they putted into a nearby marina, thinking someone there may be able to tell them what was wrong. A thorough topside check revealed everything in perfect working order. The engine ran fine, the out-drive went up and down and the propeller was the correct size and pitch. So, one of the marina divers jumped in the water to check underneath. He came up choking on water, he was laughing so hard. Under the boat, still strapped securely in place ... was the trailer!
And these are all true stories!

Friday 15th August 2014 - 2pm to 7pm Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th August 2014 - 11am to 6pm The Festival reaches its first major milestone in 2014 as this will be the fifth year for the Arts Festival to be held as an annual event in the village. It is sponsored by the local charity The Malvern Hills Community Fou ndat ion: w w w. malvernhillscommunityfoundation.org. Based on an Arts Festival at St Ceneri Le Gerei in southern Normandy, France, The West Malvern Arts Festival continues to feature the work of some of the most interesting artists from Worcestershire and Herefordshire, and also to encourage some of the younger artists who may be just starting in their chosen careers. As in previous years, it will be held in the village between the Elim College and the Brewers Arms pub. There will be the usual mixture of venues, thanks to the kind offers of local residents and other organisations, ranging from gazebos, private garages, garden walls etc, to larger venues such as the Elim College, St James’ Church, West Malvern Primary School, and The Brewers Arms pub garden, and there may be a few different venues as well. Admission to the event is free throughout for both visitors and artists, and as last year we are likely to be hosting a wide variety of artists, some of whom will be new to the Festival, and who will be showing and/ or selling a wide variety of work ranging from sculpture to jewellery, glassware to calligraphy, besides painters, photography, 22
mixed media etc, etc. Some artists will again be taking commissions, and all work will be under cover in the event of wet weather. It is also intended to have other supporting attractions including musical entertainment and a vehicle cavalcade. Several refreshment venues will be available during the Festival, and once again the specially brewed Arty Pharty ale, from the local Malvern Hills Brewery, should be available at the pub. A barbecue is also a possibility if we have good weather. Visitors can be assured of the usual very warm welcome for which West Malvern is renowned, and of an interesting, different and relaxing day out. Watch out for further publicity in the coming weeks as the event will be widely advertised in the local press and media, and also by posters, flyers etc. If you would like to exhibit at the 2014 Festival, please contact Laurie Gregory, Chairman of The Malvern Hills Community Foundation by emailing him at westmalvernarts.org or ringing 07801 818260. There is also a dedicated festival website at westmalvernarts.org which gives further information, links etc.

The Butterfly Garden
article & photography by Pamela Green
O
n a trip into Luxemburg my husband and I found a delightful butterfly garden. This is rather special garden as it is run by four brain dammaged adults with two managers. The butterfly garden is open during the season, from April until October. The reception, shop and cafe are open throughout the year and all the the gifts sold in the shop are hand made. They come from a Co-op who employ brain damaged adults and the cakes in the cafÊ are also baked by them. The Butterfly Garden is the ideal place for lovers of nature. Located in the wine town of Grevenmacher, you can take a walk in the over 600-metre tropical garden and admire the hundreds of exotic butterflies. With a constant temperature of 27°C and humidity of 70%, the tropical garden is a paradise-like
oasis on the shores of the Moselle, for butterflies from the tropics. We were amazed by their beautiful colours and how they would land on you, even in your hair. We both love photography and wandered around snapping to our hearts content. Our cameras never stopped clicking and one large blue butterfly really captivated us but we had so much trouble getting a clear photograph of it. The wings were such a bright blue inside but a rather drab brown on the outside, with a design like a large eye. When a butterfly lands they usually close their wings, so you can imagine the imposible task we had of capturing the colourful wings of this magnificent insect. We spent a wonderful afternoon just taking photos and admiring the surroundings. Thanks to the

tropical climate in the glass house, the Butterfly Garden is a peaceful haven where 50 different species of butterflies fly in liberty. Children can discover the fascinating life cycle of the butterfly. After mating, the females lay their eggs which develop into caterpillars. When the cocoon tissue has ripened the caterpillar transforms inside into a chrysalis in order to end up as a marvelous butterfly. The garden houses a large variety of tropical plants and multi-coloured flowers. It also has small tropical birds, Chinese quail, chameleons, turtles and bees. It is a delightful setting, educational and enjoyable for both children and adults. So if you visit Luxemburg why not discover this magical place with your family and friends. 25

The Cheeseboard 100 Barnard's Green, Malvern, WR14 3ND
T
aleggio is a semi-soft, smear-ripened Italian cheese named after the caves of Val Taleggio.
It is one of the oldest soft cheeses and is made every autumn and winter. During cheese making, the acidic milk is brought to the lab and kept on the wooden shelves in chambers, as well in caves, according to tradition. In order to prevent mould infestation, the cheese is washed with seawater once a week. Maturation takes six to ten weeks when a thin crust is formed. The cheese has a strong smell, but has a relatively mild taste with an unusual fruity tang. To make the cheese brighter and moderate in flavour, some

Five Secrets for Flat Abs
W
ish your stomach was flatter and more toned? Exercise alone will not get you a toned stomach – diet is a huge part of the equation. Here are five ways to improve your eating habits that will dramatically flatten your abs: Flat Abs Secret No 1: Enjoy natural sweets Traditional sugar-filled sweets will quickly add up around your waistline. Instead of going for sugary sweets, enjoy natural sweets. • Fruit is nature’s sugar. Reach for sweet, seasonal fruit for dessert. • Avoid foods that contain white sugar or golden syrup. Consider these items ‘antiflat-abs’. • Use wholesome sweeteners such as pure maple syrup, brown rice syrup or dates in your recipes instead of white sugar. Eliminate white sugar from your kitchen. Flat Abs Secret No 2: Don’t eat after 6pm This is such a simple and effective way to lose fat. Late night eating is the most damaging to your waistline, so cut it out completely.
you’ve put a period to the end of your consumption for the day. • Change your evening routine. If you’ve always ended your day watching your favourite shows with your hand in the snack bowl, then now is the time to change things up. Find activities that don’t revolve around food and stick with those. • Make it a habit. The first few weeks will be the hardest, but soon your new no-food-after-6pm routine will feel normal. Flat Abs Secret No 3: Eat more fibre Most people simply do not get enough fibre in their diets. Fibre is essential when it comes to getting lean since it is low calorie while filling you up. • Instead of seeing salad just as a side item, make salads into meals. Add protein to a large pile of greens for a guiltless meal. • Make veggies a part of every meal. The benefits of eating more vegetables are too numerous to list, just know that your body will become healthier and leaner with each fibrous bite.
• Fruits are a delicious source of fibre. Incorporate fresh, seasonal fruits into • Brush your teeth immediately following your daily diet. dinner. Once your teeth are brushed, 30 To advertise call 01684 833715 or 07754 170286 or visit www.grapevinepublications.co.uk
Flat Abs Secret No 4: Cut back on carbs Notice I didn’t say cut out all carbs, but rather cut back on carbs. These diet tweaks are meant as lifestyle changes that you will stick with long term. Cutting back on carbs is a realistic and very effective way to drop fat. • Always choose whole grain bread and pasta over white. Whole grains are less likely to be stored as fat than processed grains. • Eat half of the carbs you normally do. Eat your sandwich open-faced and reduce the size of your pasta serving. • Avoid carb-filled snacks between meals. Instead of crackers or crisps, have fresh fruit and veggies.
• Drink a large glass of water before each meal. This will prevent overeating. • Choose water instead of sugar-filled drinks and juices. Sugar-filled drinks are a huge weight-gain trap. • Carry a water bottle with you throughout the day. Keep water in the car and at your desk for constant hydration. Eating right, coupled with challenging exercise, is the formula for a toned, lean body —so guarantee your results by teaming up with me. Together we will come up with a fitness plan that is uniquely yours, one that fits your lifestyle and brings you promptly to your goals. Call or email today to get started.

Dormy Chef wins top restaurant award The Garden Room is Hotel Restaurant of the Year
J
on Ingram’s Garden Room at Dormy House Hotel near Broadway has been named Hotel Restaurant of the Year. The Garden Room at Dormy House beat Buckland Manor and Lords of the Manor Hotel in Upper Slaughter in the 2014 Cotswold Life Food and Drink Awards. But Head Chef Ingram promises we “ain’t seen nothing yet.” BBC TV Countryfile presenter Adam Henson presented the award to Jon Ingram and Restaurant Manager Sam Noar before an audience of 500 at Cheltenham Racecourse this week [Monday 7 July.] Adam said that judges had praised the presentation of each course and were also impressed with the “friendly and accommodating” staff. Jon Ingram joined Dormy House in April, in a career that spans the 7-star Burj Al Arab in Dubai and top London hotels The Grove, the Sky Lounge at the Mint Hotel and the Blue Boar Smokehouse at the Intercontinental Westminster. “This is a wonderful award to win in the Cotswolds – one of the UK’s finest tourist locations,” said Jon, “But you ain’t seen nothing yet! “We were shortlisted alongside a Relais & Chateau hotel and a Michelin-starred hotel restaurant and 32
yet the judges chose us. This proves that we are doing what we always set out to do – and that is, quite simply, to be the best restaurant for miles. “I have great plans for the future of food at Dormy. I’ve just taken delivery of an amazing Bertha charcoal oven that will enable us to cook steaks to perfection. I am also developing a whole new range of dishes for our restaurant and bar menus. For instance, you have to try my Rioja risotto with braised octopus and sea bass. I want to knock everyone’s socks off with our food.” The 12th annual Cotswold Life Food & Drink awards, designed to celebrate the best in Cotswold produce and restaurants, attracted more than 2,000 nominations from contented customers. Dormy House is part of the 400-acre Farncombe Estate which overlooks the Vale of Evesham – home to some of the finest fruit and vegetables, meat and milk in the country. There are two main eateries: the informal Potting Shed bar and the light and airy Garden Room, serving an imaginative three-course evening menu for just £40. The signature pudding, a seasonal crumble soufflé, has been a favourite ever since the refurbished hotel launched in August 2013. The Garden Room is open Tuesday to Saturday evenings and Sunday lunchtimes. Bookings can be made at www.dormyhouse.co.uk or on 01386 852711.

Strawberry Shortcake This take on the American classic makes an impressive dessert and is easy to make. Serves 8 Ingredients 250g self-raising flour 1 tsp baking powder 75g unsalted butter, cut into small pieces 3 tbsp caster sugar 1 egg, beaten 4 tbsp semi-skimmed milk ½ tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp icing sugar 340g strawberries 90ml whipping cream 85g Greek-style yoghurt Method ●

Appeal for Homes for Local Cats
I
t is a busy time at Evesham Cats Protection as this is the time when many litters of kittens are being born. We are inundated throughout the year with many female cats and kittens all needing permanent homes. Fortunately we are able to find homes for the kittens, but sadly this time of year the more senior cats get overlooked as they don't appear as cute and cuddly as the kittens. However don't be put off by the age of these cats; they still have a lot of fun and enthusiasm for life.
Lily Lily is a lovely long haired cat who keeps herself in tip-top condition. She is hoping that someone will fall for her good looks and give her a new home with a sofa to curl up on.
Boodie Leonard Leonard is a friendly 18-month old cat that likes lots of attention! Sadly, he was left in a box at a Veterinary surgery carpark. He would like a home with lots of activity and a garden to play in. 36

We ask for an adoption fee for the cats and kittens we rehome, which goes towards the cost of their vaccinations, flea and worm treatments, microchip and care. The time caring for the cats at Evesham Cats Protection is given freely, as the rescue centre is run completely by volunteers. Occasionally we need extra volunteers to help at the rescue centre during the busy times and with fundraising events. If you are interested in volunteering, can make a regular commitment, work as a member of a team, have an enthusiastic manner and are dedicated to helping cats, please contact our co-ordinator, Angela, on 01386 833343 for an application form. Cubs for Fast Cats
T
he baby boom at West Midland Safari Park continues as staff celebrate the birth of their first ever cheetah cubs in its 41-year history. The incredibly cute trio - 2 males and 1 female - were born on 23rd March 2014 to first time mum, Epezi. At 16 weeks old the cubs have now completed their worming and vaccination programme and face the public for the very first time this week. The cubs - nicknamed Cody, Cairo and Chloe by the staff - are already exploring the caves and rocks that form part of the Park's Cheetah Plains - the UK's largest drive-by Cheetah Reserve. Lawrence Bates, Head of Carnivores, said, "These cubs really are double trouble plus one - for mum! Whilst they are still only babies they have already developed stalking skills and like to chase anything that moves - especially mum! Joking apart, in the wild Cheetah are masters of the chase, they dash out from under cover and usually bring down their prey on the first attempt. Mealtime for the cheetah at the Park is

not usually so dramatic, although they do have a starve day once a week to replicate conditions experienced in the wild". West Midland Safari Park first introduced cheetah to their collection in Spring 2008, with two, two and a half year old cheetah brothers, Munya and Bulika. Still living at the Park, the brothers have been together since they were born. Further cheetah arrived in August 2008 from a captive breeding facility in South Africa, which included the father of the new cubs, 'Cheetor'. The Park now has 10 cheetahs, the collective name of which is known as a coalition. The cheetah is the world's fastest land animal, reaching up to 70 mph over short distances and accelerating from 0-45mph in just 3 seconds. These distinctive, spotted big cats with the black 'tear mark' running from the inner corner of each eye down to the mouth, are one of Africa's most endangered cats. The name 'cheetah' is derived from the Hindu word meaning 'spotted one'.

t’s not every day that visitors get the chance to see a baby elephant at West Midland Safari Park – in fact it has taken them 41 years for their wish to come true. The first ever baby elephant to be born at the Park arrived on Bank Holiday Monday, 5th May 2014, to 22-year old mum African elephant, ‘Five’. West Midland Safari Park has two female elephants and therefore the new youngster will have 21-year old Latabe to watch over him, too. The African elephant trio lives in the Park’s Elephant Valley. The reserve covers 5 acres and comes complete with housing, nursery, pasture, pool and naturally a sandpit, which will no doubt provide endless adventures for the new youngster, during the summer.
Apart from seeing the gorgeous new baby elephant, which has just been named ‘Sutton’, there are more than 1700 magical animal encounters at this awardwinning attraction, which is open every day up to 7th November 2014. The Park combines a 4-mile self-drive safari, with Discovery Trail, African Village, live shows and an adventure theme park. There’s even a Tiny Tots Theme Park – an area that has been created especially for young adventurers. (Rides charged extra). Lots of information can be found on the Park’s website:

Poem of Remembrance by Bethany Ireland
The soldiers marched off one by one, To do the job that had to be done, 'Your country needs you' the posters said, But no one realised what lay ahead. They gave their lives to protect us all With a willing heart they answered the call. The battles raged and so many men fell, Would anyone come home with tales to tell? We must never forget the price they paid, What selfless sacrifice the young men made As the years march silently by, We must remember why they chose to die. They fought for us so brave and true, So let's all give them the thanks they are due And remember them as we silently pray, That peace will descend on the world one day.
Pershore Remembrance Poetry Competition
W
ith 200 or more entries received from children aged between 9 and 14, chosing a winner of the competition must have been extremely challenging, but a well-deserved winner was chosen ... Bethany Ireland of Pershore High School. Bethany's Poem of Remembrance will form part of the Order of Service at a special Commemorative Parade on Monday 4th August, which will take place in Broad Street, Pershore at 1.30pm. The front cover of the Order of Service will carry this drawing by Susan Forse, also of Pershore High School.
