It is better to have loved and lost than to not to have loved at all. Though a popular statement, it is hard to accept after losing a loved one and there doesn’t seem to be anyone to turn to for support.

We all grieve in different ways and having the extra help and strength can be a gamechanger.

This belief was shared amongst members and non-members at St. James Anglican Church who recognized the importance of

helping one another during difficult times.

From these discussions in 2022, the Journey Through Grief Support Group was born.

The mission statement of the group is “to support and provide any member of the St. Marys and area community a place and process to help them know compassionately and confidentially they are entitled to the way they are feeling, and understanding the normal, necessary process of grief and mourning that is needed.”

Trevor Matkovich knows what it’s like to be in throes of addiction.

Now a trained mental-health and addictions counsellor with a private practice he recently started from his home in St. Marys, Matkovich was, for much of his life up until about eight years ago, addicted to drugs and alcohol.

Starting in his late teens, Matkovich fell into a party lifestyle that led to heavy drug and alcohol use.

At 25, he chose to go through rehab and actually managed to kick his drug habit. His reliance on alcohol, however, continued to the point where he was drinking to excess daily, his family and friends had cut ties with him, and he couldn’t hold a job or a home.

“I had just kind of outcasted everyone,” Matkovich told the Independent. “I wanted to be alone; I didn’t want to see anyone and I ended up on the couch of a guy I knew from the bar.”

While staying on his friend’s couch, a homecare nurse who was caring for his friend noticed how sick Matkovich had become as a result of years of heavy drinking, which led to visits by an addictions counsellor from Stonehenge Therapeutic Community, an alcohol and drug treatment centre in Guelph.

“Finally, she came one day and she said, ‘You need to go to the hospital.’ I ended up going to Grand River Hospital. I was put on a ventilator, put into a coma and everything CONTINUED TO PAGE 2

else. I basically had full organ failure; it was caused, obviously, by my liver, but because the liver takes out the poisons from your body, it could no longer do that, so the poison was just going through my blood. It was affecting my stomach, lungs, heart, everything,” Matkovich said.

He spent weeks in the hospital, lost 80 pounds, much of which was muscle mass, and his doctors told him he had as little as a day or two to live. Ultimately however, after leaving the hospital to die at home and then being re-admitted after suffering from a seizure and falling into a glass coffee table, doctors put Matkovich on a trial detox drug, which miraculously brought him back from the brink.

“If that addictions counsellor hadn’t gotten me to go to the hospital that day, I wouldn’t be here today.”

After coming face to face with the consequences of his addiction, Matkovich found the support he needed through a local Alcoholics Anonymous support group, and he has now been sober for eight years.

In that time, Matkovich felt the need to give back by supporting those in situations similar to his own and opted to become an addictions and mental-health counsellor.

“I thought, ‘What can I do, given a second change, where I can give back to everyone that’s given to me?’” Matkovich said. “The first thing I was going to do was try to become a nurse, but I was so physically unable to do it, the girl at Conestoga College was like, ‘I’m sorry, but you’re not going to be able to help patients.’ I was still in really rough shape for a long time. So, I went Conestoga and I ended up going for addictions and mental-health counselling in their

continuing-education (program). I was able to get that document and I actually got the President’s Award of Distinction when I graduated.”

After working several years at treatment and counselling centres in the area, Matkovich and his wife moved to St. Marys last year, shortly before his last employer, Ray of Hope in Kitchener, closed permanently. At that time, because Matkovich was dealing with another health issue that made it difficult for him to work regular hours, he opted to open his own private counselling practice from his home.

“We’ve been here about a year and a half now, and I love it. I just absolutely love the people and the town,” Matkovich said. “ … Now I have a couple flyers out in town, I’m going to speak to the high school at the end of May and the community has really embraced me.

I’ve gotten a lot of good feedback.”

Through his private practice, Matkovich offers counselling for those living with addiction and their family members. He offers free, 15-minute, no-commitment phone calls to anyone who wants to get help, and he offers full counselling sessions in person at his home, in person at this clients’ homes, or virtually.

And Matkovich doesn’t just help those dealing with substance addictions. He also helps clients with addictions to gambling, gaming, sex and a range of other behavioural addictions. Though he doesn’t claim to be an expert in all addictions, he can help clients who are dealing with issues beyond his training connect with the counselling services they need.

“The hardest step is the first one,” Matkovich said.

“Through that door, you open a whole new world. Give me 15 minutes of your time. It will cost you nothing and if you like what I have to say, I’m here to help.”

Local grief-support group offering six-week program for those who don’t know where to turn CONTINUED FROM FRONT

coordinator, facilitator, treasurer and communication roles that help keep the members on track. They are not a professional therapy service but rather a supportive group passionate in providing mentorship to those who have experienced significant loss.

The group programs are kept at about four to five attendees and will last for six weeks at a time. It is kept small to make sure everyone feels heard. According to group member Lynn Brooks, the grief group currently focuses on the written works of Dr. Alan Wolfelt who is a leading educator in death and grief. His book, Understanding Your Grief, is referenced throughout the six-week program and has been found to be a helpful resource for those who have read it.

In 2024, there were two group sessions held. Thanks to a generous donation from the St. Marys Kinette Club, the group was able to purchase Dr. Wolfelt’s books on grief to use as a helpful resource.

There was very positive feedback for the program.

An anonymous member commented, “The group provided support and education. When I felt like I was going crazy, I came to understand that my thoughts and feelings were normal.”

St. James Anglican Church St. Marys has formed an affiliation with St. James Anglican Church in Stratford and the Coping Bereavement Support Groups of Ontario in Cambridge. The purpose of this connection is to share knowledge, education and to help as many people as possible, as grief is something we all endure at some point in our lives.

Discussions are also underway on how to generate more awareness in the community so people who are grieving know where to turn. Brochures on the support group are currently available at the Friendship Centre, St. Marys Public Library, medical facilities and local churches. There is also some discussion about starting a companion program that would involve ongoing telephone conversations with participants who have completed the program.

The Journey Through Grief Support Group is now welcoming participants for the next session. The group is free to join. A voluntary, small donation to help with book costs is appreciated but never required.

Bravo

Volunteering is a truly uplifting experience WENDY LAMOND Independent Reporter

Working for the newspaper, we send out lots of ads for events that happen in our lovely town. What many people don’t realize is most of these events are put on by service clubs and groups that are built on volunteers.

Volunteering is a great way to contribute to your community and to help others. We are so lucky to have so many great groups that raise money for a variety of causes, not because they have to but because they want to.

I have been lucky to have spent 24 years with our Kinette Club and now on the St. Marys Hospital Foundation Board. What have I gained from that experience? My confidence increased, I have met the most amazing people and I have learned and am still learning so much.

The time and effort put in by volunteers is incredible. I’d like to give a shout-out to the Kinsmen Club for their Summerfest, for which they spend months planning and full days, all weekend, during this event ensuring it runs smoothly. And that is just one example of volunteers working tirelessly for the good of the community.

Sadly, the number of volunteers is dropping, especially since COVID. People are dealing with financial pressures at home and finding time to dedicate to

volunteering is an issue. The demand for services that rely on volunteers has also increased, leading to burnout.

In February, the Rotary Club of St. Marys hosted representatives from other local service clubs to discuss recruitment, retention and the possibility of joint projects. This is a positive step for all clubs and shows the passion they have for helping people. It is also a step forward to working together to attract more members so these great, annual events can continue.

I know it doesn’t work for everyone, but volunteering can be such a rewarding experience that allows you to make a difference and connect with so many amazing people.

One of my favourite memories as a Kinette involves a group call at a zone conference. A club was raising money for a cystic fibrosis patient who needed help with rides to the hospital and cover some association costs.

Cystic Fibrosis Canada was the key partner for Kin Clubs across Canada. At the end of meeting, a call was made to the patient to let her know that she had help as long as she needed it, including some major financial help.

There was not a dry eye in the room.

Volunteering gives us a push and a purpose, even when we feel tired and unable to help. Together, we can accomplish so much more than on our own.

1) Bravo to the young woman who brought baked goods to our home when picking up an item she bought from us through the Marketplace. In setting up the meet she found out we had a funeral earlier in the day - your kind gesture was very much appreciated!

1) Boo to the Town of St. Marys for not opening public washrooms earlier in the season for users of our public parks. We have desperately needed to use the Milt Dunnell Field washroom twice in April to find the doors still locked. You would think that once the threat of freezing pipes is over, the town could take the time to open them for all to use. I’m sure the mothers and fathers of small children playing in the park right next to the washrooms and the elderly walking for exercise would appreciate not having to go home early because these washrooms are locked. April 1 should be open date as people are out and about. I’m appalled that April 28 was the open date as there have been many, many nice days in April.

2) Bravo to Christine for reserving our seats once the playoffs of the Lincs started so we could all continue to sit together, for helping the older gentleman who had foot surgery be able to manage getting to his seat and for so much more. We have appreciated all your efforts and the kindness you have shown!

3) Bravo to the mayor and town council for considering a resolution to the Ontario government to decline the use of “strong mayor powers.”

This sends a strong message that elected town councillors have an equally important voice in decision-making on behalf of the citizens of their communities.

4) Bravo to the individual who shares the love of Jesus on the street to those passing by. He not only speaks about the love of Jesus but also demonstrates it by generously sharing food with people.

This year’s Stonetown Heritage Festival running from July 11-13 promises a Saturday filled with a diverse range of live entertainment options for everyone to enjoy.

“We have something for everyone at this year’s festival,” said St. Marys tourism and events coordinator Morgan Easton. “From incredible local musicians to captivating street performers, we want to make sure there’s never a dull moment!”

The intersection of Queen Street and Water Street will showcase demonstrations and performances throughout the day. The popular Bex in Motion, a hula hoop and comedy artist, will return this year. Additionally, there will be entertainment provided with a magician stilt-walker made possible by the generosity of McLean Taylor Construction Ltd. Children will be able to enjoy a downtown Kids Zone that will include inflatables, face painting and various activities from the Town of St. Marys EarlyON Centre, the St. Marys Museum and the St. Marys Public Library.

Our senior of the week is Kathy Jeffrey. Kathy was born in Lakeside and grew up on a farm just outside of Lakeside. She has three sons, several grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Over the years Kathy spent a lot of time volunteering where she met many people. She received a 10-year certificate for volunteering at Kingsway and Fairhill Residence and also volunteered at hospitals and schools. Kathy likes flowers and taking care of them.

The St. Marys Fire Department has announced Kristian Pusey as its firefighter of the month for May. Pusey joined the department as a firefighter in January 2025.

“I always wanted to be a firefighter and with the support of my wife, we decided it was time to pursue my dream and serve the community with the many challenges that arise in the fire service,” Pusey said.

Pusey is married to his lovely wife, Rebecca, and they have two daughters, Amelia and Hunter – the latter of whom is barely a month old. Pusey works at JSB Construction in St. Marys as a carpenter.

“The most impressive part of my time with the St. Marys Fire Department has been the willingness of everyone stepping forward to help myself and others,” Pusey said in a press release. ‘’I found myself welcomed with open arms and they made me feel like I was a part of a family.”

“Kristian was selected as firefighter of the month for his pursuit and drive to complete his Firefighter Initial Training Program ahead of the two-year probationary time,” said Fire Chief Richard “Andy” Anderson in the press release.

“Kristian’s passion for the trade makes him a great addition to the team,” added deputy fire chief Phil West. “Kristian knows the amount of time that is required of him to become an integral part of the fire department, and he is up to the task.”

It was a day of family activities and community connection as D&S Downham Equipment Ltd. hosted its annual Big Orange Event and Open House at their dealership north of St. Marys April 26.

As a family-owned business with over

60 years of service in the area, D&S Downham Equipment welcomed guests to explore their dealership and meet the team. While chilly weather kept most activities indoors, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. Service manager Teresa Clayton played a key role in organizing the day’s events, which included door prizes, a bouncy castle for the kids, hot dogs and hamburgers, fresh popcorn

and a variety of beverages and snacks.

Guests also had the opportunity to take part in the Ride and Drive experience where they got behind the wheel of some of Kubota’s latest equipment.

Throughout the day, staff members were on hand to answer questions and showcase a variety of new and used machinery.

“The Big Orange Event is a tradition at

Kubota dealerships across Canada, and we’re proud to bring it to our community,” said Stephanie Schwemler, marketing and inventory representative.

From children enjoying the indoor activities to farmers and homeowners exploring equipment options, and neighbours catching up, this year’s event was a great success.

Riverside B&B seeking creatives for Doors Open showcase EMILY STEWART Independent Reporter

Riverside Bed and Breakfast’s historic building is turning 150 years old this year and is looking for St. Marys’ creative arts communities to help celebrate.

John Stevens, co-owner of Riverside, is looking for musicians, visual artists, authors, story tellers, poets and other creatives to perform at the Doors Open showcase on Aug. 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 96 Robinson St. Riverside has been part of previous Doors Open events and Stevens always likes to add something extra to the building tour.

“It just makes the stop a bit more worth it because the home is beautiful.

We’ve been blessed to live here, but St. Marys is much more than architecture.

It’s the people that live here, so this is a way to expose the artistic community to people who come to Doors Open,” he said.

He added that Doors Open is a great way to learn more about the history behind the architecture in participating communities.

Riverside Bed and Breakfast’s building was built in 1875 by Leon Clench. It

was the childhood home of his daughter and violin prodigy, Nora Clench, before she left to study in Germany at 17 years old. Stevens enjoys living at the historic home.

“I never thought that when I grew up that I ever would live in a home so wonderful because it’s right beside the water, it’s on a dead-end street. The neighbours are obviously wonderful. It’s just a pleasure to sit on the porch and watch the river go by,” Stevens said.

School boards across southwestern Ontario ditch X amid privacy and Thank you safety concerns I look forward to continuing to serve everyone in Perth–Wellington.

Several school boards in southwestern Ontario are stepping away from X, formerly known as Twitter, citing concerns over platform safety, artificial intelligence and shifting communication strategies.

In a recent report by heyData, a source often used to understand the role of AI on social media platforms, researchers raised concerns about privacy and the collection of personal data without informed consent – especially when it comes to students. The report also highlights how the widespread use of AI on platforms like X can lead to the spread of misinformation, potentially influencing real-world events.

The Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB) announced last month it will be leaving the platform as of June 30. The board and all associated accounts will no longer be using X to reach their audience, and families have been encouraged to follow along on other platforms instead.

The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) followed suit, releasing a statement in April explaining its decision to step away from the platform. The board cited evolving policies, changes to safety features and the growing use of artificial intelligence as key reasons.

“Our top priority remains the safety and wellbeing of our community. While the WRDSB X/Twitter account will remain temporarily active to help guide users to our website, no new content will be shared,” read an April media release.

The board is now encouraging its community to stay connected through its website, other social media plat-

forms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Threads and YouTube) and email subscriptions to school and board websites.

“Through these platforms, we will work to maintain accessible, transparent and safe communication with students, families and staff,” the statement continued.

Catholic boards across the region are making similar changes. The Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) recently announced it will also stop posting on X. “Our priority is to share updates in a space that fosters respectful and trustworthy engagement while ensuring our online presence reflects our values of faith, inclusion and respect,” said the board.

Moving forward, updates will be shared on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. All official WCDSB X accounts have pinned posts directing followers to their new Instagram accounts, where updates will continue. These accounts will remain active for now to help families adjust to the change.

As more boards re-evaluate how they communicate online, many are choosing platforms that better reflect their values and offer a safer space for school communities to stay connected.

For a better understanding of local schools, families are encouraged to check school websites and news releases for more information on how to stay connected.

Red Dress Day recognized in St. Marys

Red Dress Day was acknowledged in St. Marys on Monday May 5th with a commemoration service at the library with words by Patsy-Ann Day and a poem written and read by Stratford Poet Laureate David Stones followed by drumming and singing by Melissa Stevens and Sylvia Harvey.

This is the 15th annual National Day of Reflection which was founded in 2010 bringing awareness for missing and murdered indigenous women and girls.

It is believed that spirits see bright colours with red being one of the brightest so that is why red dresses are hung so that spirits of the women may find their way home.

tion to the violence that women have and are still experiencing. Statistics Canada released a report in 2023 sadly showing that Indigenous women and girls were six times more likely to be murdered than other groups of people in Canada.

The group met at the library steps and then did a solidarity walk to Riverwalk Commons where they continued with a sacred fire, drumming and singing acknowledging the importance of this day

and honouring the lives of indigenous women and girls who have been lost or remain missing.

St. Marys Fire Department hosts annual breakfast in support of Muscular Dystrophy Canada

On Sunday, May 4, the St. Marys Fire Department held its annual breakfast raising funds for Muscular Dystrophy Canada, local sports teams and other charities. Always a popular event, the volunteers start planning weeks before and many present and past firefighters step up to feed over 1,000 people. AMDSB launches I AM Here campaign to encourage regular attendance at school GALEN SIMMONS Local Journalism Initiative Reporter

As the end of the school year approaches and students’ minds turn to summer vacation and summer jobs, the Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB) has launched a new campaign aimed at underscoring the importance of regular attendance at school.

This new campaign, called I AM Here, is targeted at students, school staff, parents and caregivers, and the wider community, all of whom have a role to play in encouraging and supporting regular attendance.

According to a press release from the school board, research shows that missing just 10 per cent of school, or two days a month, has a notable impact on student academic success.

“It’s always something that’s in the forefront of our minds,” said Ed Havenga, systems principal of student success and pathways with AMDSB. “Coming out of COVID, it’s now kind of in the rearview mirror and we just want to make sure we are engaging with our families and ensuring we have our students in classrooms so the teachers are delivering and the students are there to work with the teacher and to support the learning that’s in the classroom. In order for that to happen, we need our students there.”

The I AM Here campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of regular daily attendance and to provide staff, students and parents/caregivers with the necessary tools to bolster attendance across Huron and Perth.

The campaign has four areas of focus: • For students: I AM Here means they are present, on time and ready to learn each day.

• For school staff: I AM Here means that they stand with their students. They are reliable, dependable, caring adults who facilitate a safe, welcoming classroom environment and are invested in each student’s success.

• For parents/caregivers: I AM Here means they are

engaged in encouraging their child’s education and are ready to connect with school staff when necessary.

• For the community: I AM Here means the wider community supports and encourages children and youth by offering support – financial, physical, emotional, social – to ensure students can attend school regularly.

Regular student attendance will be supported by a team of professionals. AMDSB attendance counsel-

lors work collaboratively, as needed, with the school board’s mental health and wellbeing team, Indigenous education team, school administrators and community partners.

Trained staff provide students with techniques to reduce anxiety and stress through the use of healthy coping strategies. If necessary, they can also support referrals to alternative programming or to community resources. Working with parents and caregivers, they can support the development of a plan that encourages a full return to academic learning. Students and parents or caregivers should contact their school principal to access the support of an attendance counsellor.

“Attendance is one of the pillars of the ministry’s student-achievement plan,” Havenga said. “We are constantly looking at our data for our attendance, so we’re looking at students who have greater than or equal to 90 per-cent attendance, so that’s one of our metrics that, as a school board, we’re always looking to increase. We’ve actually created an attendance advisory council, so that council is just now collecting best practices from various schools in the district, and then we’re going to share those ideas with all schools.”

Part of the campaign, Havenga explained, is sharing positive messaging about the importance of regular attendance both in school and on social media through the school board and each individual school’s social-media platforms. He said sharing the positive spinoffs of regular attendance has been proven more effective than trying to scare students into attending school with the potential impacts low attendance can have on learning and their future career paths.

While the program is rolling out now as a sort of pilot before school lets out for the summer, Havenga said board staff will take whatever lessons are learned and the data collected to continue expanding on and improving the program going into the next school year and beyond.

The St. Marys Lincolns went out with a bang.

In one of the most exciting-yet-heartbreaking games of the entire season, the St. Marys Lincolns were eliminated from the Sutherland Cup Playoffs in seven games by the Chatham Maroons.

With the win, the Maroons became the first team to hoist the newly minted Joe Thornton Trophy as Western Conference Champions, advancing to the Sutherland Cup Finals against the St. Catharines Falcons.

Head coach Jeff Bradley told the Independent his team turned in a strong performance in Game 7, but ultimately, fate was not on their side.

“I thought we played a really good game, but Chatham played one goal better and forced us to play catch-up, and we weren’t able to do that, unfortunately,” said Bradley. “It obviously felt horrible, watching the players, the coaches, Pat (Powers), Brandon (Boyd) and all of our supporters in that moment, knowing we were so close and knowing it could have been a really special moment for us at home, and we just couldn’t quite get the job done.”

Kyle Morey scored the game’s first goal at the 15:31 mark of the opening period on the Lincolns’ one and only powerplay of the night. The Maroons had just one man advantage as well, which came in the second frame but, rather than the Maroons capitalizing on it, the Lincolns potted a shorthanded tally to go ahead by two goals when Jaden Lee set up Luca Spagnolo for his seventh goal of the post-season.

Over the next five minutes and four seconds, however, the Maroons clawed back and got goals from Jaxen Forti-

er-Smith and Carter Chadwick to tie the game at two apiece.

The game stayed deadlocked until a shot from the point by Josh Harding snuck by Lincolns’ netminder Colby Booth-Housego. Almost exactly five minutes later, Connor Hunt tipped a shot from the point past Booth-Housego to give Chatham a two-goal lead of their own.

Harding and Fortier-Smith’s goals were the first career playoff goals for each defenceman.

Former Maroons’ rearguard Owen Kalp snapped home his third of the playoffs with six minutes and 41 seconds left in regulation to cut the lead back down to one, but despite a late-game flurry by the Lincolns, they came just short, unable to tie the game as Gannon Hunter ended with 30 saves to backstop Chatham to the Game 7 victory and the Western Conference title.

Despite the bitter-tasting defeat, Bradley acknowledged the Lincs’ history-making season was filled with positives.

“It’s hard to be better than we were this season. We were really good. The record we had and where we finished in the conference and in the league were obviously outstanding. But when you’re in that final four, there are three other great teams, and sometimes one goal separates you, and you can’t guarantee that goal will be in your favour.

“We’ve been in the conference finals three years in a row,” Bradley continued. “There is no other team that can claim that. You have to cherish all the fun we had this year. Even though this is a heartbreaking way to end, this season had a lot of success for us, and we’re going to try to take another step forward.”

Bradley also expressed gratitude to the community for supporting the team

throughout their 2024-2025 campaign.

“Getting to play as much meaningful hockey as we have is a privilege, and doing so in St. Marys makes it an even bigger privilege for our players and our staff. We hope the fans enjoyed watching

it, and we know they certainly gave us a boost. We deeply appreciate the support we’ve received. Our players gave our fans plenty to cheer about, and we hope the fans enjoyed the ride this year.”

DCVI Junior Girls Soccer team starts season with pair of wins TURNER ROTH Independent Sports Reporter

The St. Marys DCVI Junior Girls Soccer team began their season on May 1, earning a pair of 2-0 victories over Stratford District Secondary (SDSS) and St. Anne’s.

In their first game of the day, the Salukis took on SDSS and, on the backs of a great defensive performance, came away with a two-goal shutout in their season opener. St. Marys made it next to impossible for SDSS to get a shot on net.

Alanna Savile opened the scoring early in the first half with Charlotte Richardson extending the Salukis’ lead to two later in the contest.

Coach Alex Zulu praised the strong and vocal teamwork displayed by the squad.

“We spaced the field and communicated very well,” Zulu told the Independent. “We knew where each other was and where the opposing players were.

Lots of good passing kept things spread out and we worked hard for each other, which allowed us to bring in lots of fresh subs to relieve some of the pressure.”

Zulu also applauded the team’s ability to play in the adverse weather conditions throughout the day.

Their second game of the day saw the Salukis once again take charge early in the first half. After hitting a post earlier in the game, Richardson gave St. Marys a 1-0 lead. Savile wasted little time in adding to the Salukis’ lead, scoring on a wonderkick from outside the 18-yard box with an assist from Lena Thompson just minutes later.

The Salukis held on for their second consecutive 2-0 win of the day, which not only kept their record perfect after two games but also meant DCVI’s junior girls haven’t allowed a goal through two games this season.

According to Zulu, an in-your-face style played by St. Anne’s was a good challenge for St. Marys, but the team managed to withstand everything the visitors threw their way.

“They seemed to learn and understand the opposing team and how each player was going to play as the game went along. We had a few discussions on the bench and went over a couple of tips and tricks to counter the other team. We talked about not being scared to match their physicality because getting used to that will only make us strong, and we used our speed to outmatch them.”

Six SKC students qualify for Nationals at WKC Provincial Tryouts SPENCER SEYMOUR Independent Sports Reporter

Six Stonetown Karate Centre (SKC) students picked up top-eight finishes at the World Karate Championships (WKC) Ontario Provincial Tryouts on April 12 in Brampton, advancing them to compete at the national qualifier.

At the Provincial Tryouts, athletes must place in the top eight to advance to the National Tryouts taking place in Gatineau Que. on May 16-18. This year’s WKC World Championship event is slated for Oct. 25-31 in Niagara Falls, NY. In the 18+ Women’s division, Sensei Jalyne Lorentz captured a quarter of first-place honours, including in Hardstyle Forms, Classical Forms, Kenpo Forms, and Traditional Weapons. Lorentz also took the third spot in Creative Weapons.

Morgan Houston earned the top spot in the Veteran Women’s Traditional Weapons event. Houston also picked up two second-place finishes in Traditional Forms and Creative Weapons.

Competing in the 16-17 Girls bracket, Marieke Van Lierop captured the top spot in Kenpo Forms. Additionally, Van Lierop finished second in four competitions, including Hardstyle Forms, Classical Forms, Traditional Weapons, and

top-three placements, including two second-place finishes in 35+ Women’s

Under-65-kg Point Sparring and 42+ Women’s Under-65-kg Point Sparring.

In 48+ Women’s Under-65-kg Point Sparring, Campbell placed third.

Fox Houston’s top result came in the 14-15 Boys Hardstyle Forms event, in which Houston claimed second place.

Houston added four fourth-place finishes in Classical Forms, Traditional Weapons, Creative Weapons, and Kenpo Forms, and a sixth-place finish in Freestyle Forms.

In the 35+ Women’s Over-70-kg Point Sparring event, Lisa Sheldon captured second place. Sheldon also took fourth in the 42+ Women’s Over-70-kg Point Sparring.

Sensei Jeremy Lorentz credited the tireless work ethic of all six competitors.

“We are incredibly proud of our outstanding students who represented us at the Provincial Tryouts,” said Lorentz.

Perth Children’s Water Festival making a splash in St. Marys this month ST. MARYS INDEPENDENT Staff Contribution

On May 25, dive into the world of water at the Perth Children’s Water Festival at Milt Dunnell Field in St. Marys from 1-4 p.m.

Children, youth and the young-at-heart will enjoy interactive activities focused on water conservation, protection and science. Highlights include live birds-of-prey shows by the Canadian Raptor Conservancy (1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.), a casting exhibit with Fishing Friendzy and over 20 other hands-on activity stations.

“The festival is an excellent opportunity for the whole family to learn about water and their local environment in a fun and exciting way,” said Vanni Azzano, water festival coordinator, in a press release.

Those looking to help make the day a great success can complete a volunteer application form online at bit.ly/3FUxXj6.

High school students are encouraged to participate and gain volunteer hours.

COLUMNS UKRAINIAN CORNER: Two cultures, one baby – celebrating little Marcus ALONA VASYLIEVA Independent Columnist

Isn’t it just incredible? My dear friend, Ira, recently welcomed her sweet baby boy, Marcus, into the world right here in Canada.

Hearing her share her experience has been such a joy and has definitely got me thinking about what that journey might be like. While I haven’t personally gone through labour in Canada, Ira’s stories have offered such a heartwarming and insightful peek into the process. It’s amazing to imagine bringing a little one into the world in this beautiful country, whether you’re surrounded by the comforts of a Canadian home or perhaps even a Ukrainian one filled with familiar traditions.

Let’s delve a little deeper into what the experience of labour and delivery can be like in Canada, drawing from Ira’s recent adventure.

So, imagine Ira’s surprise when, a mere three and a half hours after bringing her little bundle of joy into the world, the Canadian nurses were all, “Alright, mama! You’re good to go! Here’s a pamphlet on diaper disposal and the number for a great poutine place!” Three and a half hours!

Back in Ukraine, that’s like the time it takes to politely field a dozen opinions on the “correct” way to keep the evil eye away from the baby and figure out if today is the auspicious Tuesday for the all-important first bath.

And the food! Oh, the food! In Ukraine, the breastfeeding diet is a legendary affair. Forget your spicy garlic sausages, your rich chocolate tortes and anything remotely exciting. It’s all boiled chicken, plain buckwheat and maybe, if you’re feeling wild, a single, unseasoned carrot. The idea is that anything mom eats will magically transfer into the breastmilk and cause the baby to spontaneously combust or develop a

sudden craving for opera.

So, picture Ira cautiously asking about the approved postpartum menu, fully expecting a list that reads like the ingredients for wallpaper paste. Instead, the friendly Canadian nurse probably just smiled and said, “Honey, eat what you like! Just maybe go easy on the maple syrup unless you want a tiny lumberjack with a sweet tooth!” Ira must have thought she’d landed on a different planet. No dietary restrictions? Freedom to enjoy a Nanaimo bar without fear of baby-induced digestive distress?

gatherings, bursts of colour and enough tiny outfits to make your heart melt.

Think elaborate gender-reveal parties where the slicing of a cake or a puff of smoke unveils the baby’s sex, followed by baby showers overflowing with gifts, games and well-wishes for the expectant parents. It’s a time for friends and family to shower the parents-to-be with love, support and, let’s be honest, a mountain of adorable baby paraphernalia.

enced pregnancy in both Ukraine and Canada, she’s noticed a stark contrast in how society approaches these precious months.

In Ukraine, Ira explained, there’s often a societal undercurrent of superstition surrounding pregnancy. While loved ones are undoubtedly excited, there’s a tendency to avoid too much pre-baby celebration. Things like announcing the pregnancy too early, buying baby items before the birth, or hosting large gatherings like baby showers can be frowned upon. These hesitations often stem from a desire to protect the pregnancy from any negative energy or “evil eye.” It’s a cultural practice rooted in a deep concern for the wellbeing of both mother and child.

“In Ukraine,” Ira shared, “we mostly kept things quiet until the baby arrived. There wasn’t the same emphasis on showing off the pregnancy or having big parties beforehand. People would offer their blessings and support in more private ways. Buying things for the baby early felt almost like tempting fate.”

Apparently, Ira had the “dream labor experience,” which sounds like something straight out of a parenting fairytale. Her fantastic husband, Val, was her rockstar support system, providing massages and assisting with, well, everything. We can only imagine the tagteam effort that led to such a speedy and smooth delivery.

But at the end of the day, through all the funny cultural quirks and adorable differences, the absolute best thing is that baby Marcus is here, healthy and happy. I’m sending Ira and her growing family the biggest hugs and warmest wishes.

Huge congrats, my dear Ira! May your days be filled with the tiniest, most adorable socks, the snuggliest baby cuddles and the happy knowledge that you can totally sneak that extra little treat!

HISTORIC ST. MARYS: Rosebank Cottage, Part Two MARY SMITH Independent Columnist

The fourth Canadian census following Confederation was taken in April 1901.

In St. Marys, the enumerator for the west ward was William Nelson Ford, a longtime resident. His census duties took him door to door to confirm and record information about each household. Ford began on the north side of Queen Street West.

When he came to the tenth household on his list, Rosebank Cottage, he was faced with a dilemma. The occupants willingly provided their personal information.

They stated that the head of the household was A. E. Ford, a physician, aged 68, with a respectable annual income of $1000. The other two occupants were his wife, Jane E. Ford, aged 60, and his daughter, Julia, a spinster, 35 years old.

W. N. Ford recorded this information in the proper columns on his census sheet and moved on to the next house. But he knew that much of what he recorded was wrong.

W. N. Ford was A. E. Ford’s older brother, Jane’s brother-in-law, Julia’s uncle. He knew that Dr. Adam Enoch Ford now lived in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Ford had left town in 1880 as the result of a scandal and had never returned to St. Marys.

His wife and daughter had lived by themselves in their house on Queen Street West for many years and their income was uncertain at best. Julia also took several years off her age. Born in 1858, by 1901, she was in her early 40s. This inaccuracy probably didn’t concern her uncle, W. N. Ford. It was a forgivable vanity and quite common in census returns. Men as well as women often stated that they were younger than they actually were. In any case, W. N. Ford’s responsibility was to record the information he was given.

What was happening with the Fords and Rosebank Cottage in 1901? It’s impossible to fully understand another family’s dynamics, especially looking back more than a century. But it seems that Jane had not given up on her marriage. Adam Enoch Ford’s letters from Denver to his family were optimistic. Perhaps he gave Jane and Julia reason to believe that there were better days ahead. When he arrived in Denver in the early 1880s, Dr. Ford set up a medical practice and at first, life in this new location seemed to go well.

He and Arthur were joined by Leon, the Fords’ younger son. Colorado offered many opportunities for these two young men. Arthur was athletic, loved sports especially baseball, and his speed as a runner made him an asset to local teams. His father was always in attendance, cheering him on. Arthur found work in a law office and aimed to become a lawyer. His brother, Leon, was intrigued by the many mining ventures in Colorado. He worked for prospecting companies, learned about ore and minerals, and began to consider himself a geologist, even taking on the title of mining engineer. As he got older, he spent more and more time away from Denver in mining camps not only in Colorado, but also in Nevada, California and Mexico.

Perhaps because they had received such positive reports from Denver, ca 1890, Jane and Julia took a prolonged trip to the west. They spent at least some of that time with Dr. Ford in Denver. But it was a frontier city, much larger and brasher than the small town they were used to. Jane must have believed that a life as Dr. Ford’s wife in Colorado would not provide the same status she had enjoyed in the early years of her marriage in St. Marys. Other factors may have been discouraging. The doctor and his son, Arthur, enjoyed frequenting this mining city’s many saloons and taverns. Leon was rarely in Denver at all. Jane and Julia returned to St. Marys and to the security of Rosebank Cottage.

When researching background for his 2013 book “Baseball’s Creation Myth,” Brian (Chip) Martin discovered that the Ford family made another attempt to reunite in Vancouver in 1900. One of Dr. Ford’s grand plans was to build a centre to treat addiction in Seattle, Washington.

Vancouver would be the family base. W. N. Ford’s two sons, Harold, a pharmacist and Armour, a lawyer, accompanied Jane and Julia to Vancouver to be part of this family enterprise. But the project, like others that the Fords attempted, failed.

Everyone was disappointed but it must have been particularly difficult for Dr. Ford. One reason that he had hoped for the sanitorium’s success was that Arthur, once such a promising young man, had become addicted to both alcohol and morphine, an easily accessible drug in the 19th century. Arthur would have been a patient in this clinic as well as a business partner. Escorted by Armour Ford, Jane and Julia returned to St. Marys. Dr. Ford and Arthur went back to Denver.

The two branches of the family never saw each other again.

Dr. Ford, now in his 70s, continued to write to St. Marys. Some of his letters to Julia survived and are very affectionate in tone. They are also filled with apologies for his inability to contribute in any substantial way to support the St. Marys household. Most of his resources were

hold. An amateur photographer, he took the picture with this week’s column on one of his visits. Leon died in 1946 in Los Angeles, leaving an estate totalling $82.

While Chip Martin’s research into the Fords’ time in Colorado is remarkable, St. Marys researcher, Burnie Lancaster McLay (1909-1979,) provided insight into the lives of the women who were left behind in St. Marys. Burnie grew up in the west ward near the Fords, Clenches and Cruttendens and had been fascinated by her neighbours. With her friend, Larry Pfaff, she researched and wrote an account of their lives. This unpublished manuscript can be seen at the St. Marys Museum.

For Burnie, Julia was the heroine of the story. Julia cared for her mother, helping her through all the setbacks of her marriage. She provided sanctuary for Leon when yet another of his ventures failed.

Then she made a home for her aunt, Alice Cruttenden Stoddard, who had been living in California but came to spend her final years in St. Marys. Alice arrived in the early 1920s and lived with Julia until she died in 1937.

Research also shows that Julia’s life did contain some pleasure. She was fascinated by astronomy as was one of her neighbours. They must have enjoyed summer nights looking at the stars in the dark sky over the Thames River. Her contemporaries liked her company and conversation.

Perhaps, like her father, she could tell a good story, amplifying the adventures of her trips to the west. However, Julia outlived these friends and most of her close relatives. She became increasingly eccentric as she struggled with age, loneliness and poverty, dependent on the kindness of neighbours. In 1947 at the age of 88, she fell and broke a hip. She was forced to sell Rosebank Cottage and to enter a nursing home. She died there in 1949, age 90.

Adam Enoch Ford died on May 17, 1906. Harold Ford, who had gone to Denver with his uncle and cousin and who had established a pharmacy there, was able to help Arthur with funeral arrangements. Dr. Ford was buried in an unmarked grave in Fairmount Cemetery in Denver. Jane and Julia received this sad news by telegram from Arthur, followed by more detailed letters about Dr. Ford’s final illness. Leon also wrote to his mother and sister. He had arrived in Denver too late for the funeral but assured them that he had spent time with Arthur and that he and Harold “will make some arrangements for Arthur to continue on and obtain his needs.” www.gardenontario.org/site.php/stmarys Julia continued to care for her mother in St. Marys until Jane died in 1914, age Plant Auction 74. OH, THE PLACES WE’LL GO: A region offering dozens of mini-vacation opportunities

I have lived in southwestern Ontario all my life. Over the past few decades, as my journalism career has focused on travel writing, my appreciation for this region and what it has to offer has only grown stronger.

Today, with many of us deciding to avoid travel to the United States, the benefits of our extended neighbourhood are even more apparent because there are many years’ worth of shortdrive travel destinations at our doorsteps. One of my favourites is Niagara’s wine country.

I realize that the number-one attraction in that area is Niagara Falls. In fact, Niagara Falls will usually appear in the top10 bucket list destinations in the world! However, I am a bit embarrassed to admit that I almost never make it to the falls because there are so many great places to stop on the way – and yes, I do mean wineries.

We made our early spring visit to wine country a week or so ago and didn’t get past the Beamsville area, home to some of the finest wineries on the Niagara Peninsula.

The experts have divided the Niagara Peninsula into two regions: Niagara Escarpment and Area and Niagara-on-the-Lake

and Area. Our stops this time were all in the escarpment region, all within about 10 minutes of each other.

Would you believe there are now 61 wineries in this region alone, and another 41 in the Niagara-on-the-Lake district for a total of 102 along the Peninsula. Incredible.

I probably should be more adventurous and try to explore new wineries – and I shall – but for our first wine-country venture of 2025, I also wanted to revisit some of my favourites. I was not disappointed.

I have a special affection for smaller, independently owned wineries. A visit to any of these will probably be a little unpredictable because they are, by definition, small operations with limited staff, which contributes significantly to their charm.

For instance, we dropped into Ridgepoint Wines on Cherry Avenue where I know we are guaranteed some tastings of superb, Italian-style red wines. It was lunch time and there was a big bus in the small parking lot.

When we entered, I heard the voice of owner and dedicated farmer Mauro Scarsellone addressing the folks in a crowded tasting room. His right-hand person, Avril, bustled by, explaining breathlessly that she couldn’t really talk right now and the dining room was temporarily closed.

Like I said, unpredictable.

So, as she turned to cart more open bottles into the crowded tasting room, we told her that we would come back in a couple of hours. “Great,” and she was gone.

and sipping a superb 2020 Ripasso. That kind of personalized attention makes the necessity of a return visit more than worthwhile.

We found the same laid-back atmosphere when we dropped in at Fielding Estate Winery on Locust Lane. Because it was a weekday in early spring, there was a small staff on hand. By small, I mean one in the tasting and sales room, at least.

But she was bubbly (the server, not the wine) and full of information, and managed to chat with us and other customers, never leaving us feeling ignored. Meanwhile, there were two gentlemen seated at a table in the middle of the room, clearly enjoying a relaxing afternoon out, and in no hurry to be anywhere else. Unlike at some of the big, industrial wineries (my term, not theirs), this kind of leisurely visit was entirely acceptable. In fact, at Fielding there are Muskoka chairs on the front patio and picnic tables on the lawn between the winery and the vineyards. Fielding is all about relaxing.

Our third visit was to Megalomaniac Wines, right next door to Ridgepoint. It’s a bit bigger, perhaps, but I love the name, the view (one of the best in the region) and the excellent, inexpensive wines produced by this independent winery, owned by John Howard (who also owns wineries in France).

instead – Bench Brewery on King Street where the central building is an old school. The menu was surprisingly sophisticated considering the fact we were dining in a brewery. But this was several steps above pub food; between us we had a burrito power bowl and pork souvlaki, both terrific.

That leaves us with exactly 99 more wineries and several dozen fine restaurants for future

daytrips or weekends away. If you are looking for alternate travel opportunities this year, you need look no further than the Niagara Peninsula.

FROM THE GARDEN: Growing food in small spaces

Over the last few decades, it has become a movement more than a hobby. Gardeners are growing native plants for diversity and for our valued pollinators. Experts predict that growing vegetables and fruits will be a major gardening trend for this year, driven by the cost of food in grocery stores, to be more self-sufficient and sustainable.

In the past, a large lot or garden was needed to grow a variety of veggies and fruits. But growing your own produce in a limited landscape or a small urban space can be easily achievable using the right techniques and creative methods.

Square Foot Gardening was a concept conceived by an engineer, Mel Bartholomew in the mid 1970’s and then became popular in the early 1980s. But in recent years it has renewed its popularity. Square Foot gardening is a method of growing vegetables and annual herbs in a 1-foot patterned grid, within a contained raised bed. This method is ideal for small areas,

troubled areas of poor soil and for busy families who want to grow their veggies but have a limited time for maintenance.

There are also kits on the market for raised beds. They have advantages for vegetable gardening, including better control on using healthier soil, to improve drainage and weed control. Raised beds are ideal for small spaces, providing maximum sunlight and accessibility.

Another concept for small spaces is growing up instead of out. Growing vegetables such as pole beans, peas, cucumbers, and tomatoes vertically using trellises, wall planters and stacked containers maximizes space. An obelisk made from long bamboo poles attached in the top or an old wooden ladder used as a trellis can create visual interest in any garden, all the while producing something good to eat.

Container gardening has been around for decades for growing flowers on decks, balconies, and focal areas in the landscape for colour and interest. While the popularity of contain gardening has increased, plant breeders have also developed vegetables and small fruits to grow in containers. These specified hybrids offer compact growth habits as well as excellent productivity in a limited space. Dwarf varieties of tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, even cucumbers and zucchini have been bred for their smaller stature making

them more suitable for the limited space of a container. Despite the size of the plant, their breeding has improved their resistance to certain diseases as well as producing a good yield.

Window boxes are excellent containers for growing lettuce and spinach, as these salad plants grow rapidly and can be harvested multiple times. Radishes are also great candidates for window boxes, as well as green onions. These containers can be placed on your deck or patio for easy access and maintenance. As for kale, this nutrient powerhouse grown in containers makes a wonderful ‘thriller’ in any container of herbs, flowers, or other edible plants.

Usually growing fruits, especially fruit trees, takes a required amount of space. There are so many dwarf fruit trees available as well as multiple varieties grafted on one stock. If you are a fan of currants, plant red and black currants, and gooseberries instead of ornamental shrubs in your garden.

They will produce lovely yellow flowers in June, followed by fruit a month or so later.

As for ‘berry’ fruit, strawberries can be grown in containers. The everbearing varieties are the best ones to get for maximizing amounts of yield throughout the season. On the market there are also raspberries especially developed for containers. And if you love blueberries, they are perfect for

In recognition of volunteer week April 27 to May 3, the Municipality of Thames Centre hosted an appreciation breakfast for area volunteers May 2 at the FlightExec Centre in Dorchester to thank the hundreds of dedicated volunteers who generously give their valuable time and energy for the betterment of the community.

The value of volunteers in a community is priceless. These dedicated in-

dividuals are from various non-profit organizations, community groups, area churches and contribute in a variety of ways including mentoring youth, fostering senior programs, organizing community events, improving our public areas and supporting local charities.

Their commitment and work strengthen the fabric of the community by creating connections, providing essential services and enhancing the overall wellness of their community and beyond, making the whole of the municipality a better place to live and work.

Beloved husband of Lynda (Lyndie-Sue). Father of Robin Stevens (Shawn), Chris Proctor (Katherine), Cathy MacGowan (Neil), Dave Proctor (Michelle). Grandfather of Ethan, Cameron, Hayley, Nolan, Makayla, Madeline, Gwen, Alex, Evan, Brooklyn and great-grandson Kaden. Brother of Berniece Harris and predeceased by his brother George Johnson.

Carol was the devoted wife of John Rouble for an extraordinary 69 years. Together, they created a loving home filled with faith and compassion. She was the cherished mother of Chris Rouble (pre-deceased), Catherine Rouble (pre-deceased) and Kim Rouble. Her grandchildren — Michelle Rouble-Melino, Kaitlynn Mackinnon, and Samantha Rouble — were the light of her life, and she was known to them as a fun, loving, and supportive grandmother.

OBITUARY Harold Grant Johnson passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, on April 30, 2025 at the age of 80 at Stratford General Hospital, leaving behind a legacy of love laughter and cherished memories.

He will be missed by the Ann St. Coffee Group with special thanks to his good friend Ross Marshall for his steadfast friendship and support.

A devoted father and grandfather, Harold’s greatest joy was time spent with his family at family gatherings.

He was a loving husband and soulmate to Lynda. Harold cherished the memories he made playing hockey with the KW Old Timers, loved to spend time fishing (on his own, or with grandchildren), golfing, woodworking, and piecing together puzzles.

He enjoyed any chance he could watch the Baltimore Orioles play, and will be fondly remembered as the family jokester. Harold enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, including sharing a glass of rum with family or friends, the companionship of his beloved cats Sammy and Stewart and the warmth of his family. His presence will be deeply missed and his spirit will live in our hearts.

Cremation to take place. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, June 1 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 50 (524 Belmont Ave. W., Kitchener). Memorial donations may be made to the Stratford Humane Society. Online tributes at www. hodgesfuneralhome.ca.

She was a beloved sister to Betty Bradley (pre-deceased) and a treasured aunt to Robert Clark (pre-deceased), Paul Clark, Michael Clark, and David Clark.

Carol was also a dear sister-in-law to Ambrose Rouble (pre-deceased), his wife Nancy Rouble and Paul Rouble and his wife Judith Rouble (pre-deceased).

Throughout the various communities she lived, Carol formed lasting friendships and was a companion to many who were touched by her kindness and generosity. Carol was a devout Catholic whose faith was a constant source of strength throughout her life. She was known for her kind heart, warm spirit, and infectious laughter that could light up any room.

Carol faced many challenges throughout her life with resilience and grace, never losing the spark that made her so cherished by all who knew her. Her resilience, love, and devotion will be remembered and celebrated by all who knew her. Though she is deeply missed, her legacy of kindness, strength, and unwavering joy will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched.

Steam Whistle 25 years ago (2000) Several St. Marys residents attended the grand opening of the new Steam Whistle microbrewery, located in the Roundhouse, just below the CN Tower in Downtown Toronto. St. Marys born brothers Greg (company vice president) and David (architect) Taylor are major players in the project.

Town Council recently approved a 2.6% pay increase in salary paid to town employees, members of the police service board, members of the PUC, and firefighters. This will affect approximately 63 people and cost the town an additional $23,000.

50 years ago (1975) Flood waters covered the interior of the PUC pump house in the alley between Wellington and Water Streets Saturday morning. Fortunately, St. Marys residents are presently using water pumped from the St. George Street station which was high and dry. The downtown wells will need a complete cleanout before they are placed in service later this summer.

The activity is getting into high gear at the former Parkview Creamery building on Water Street north at Parkview Drive as the new owner, Paul Betteridge, prepares to launch an expansion to the familiar services of his St. Marys Landscaping firm.

75 years ago (1950) Even the snakes have been out sunning themselves. A King Street resident found several of them wriggling around the front yard on Tuesday at noon.

West Nissouri Township recently passed a new building by-law to deal with the rush of new building which is going on in the southwest corner of that township, adjacent to the city of London. The township, like many rural municipalities, did not have a building by-law on its books previously.

100 years ago (1925) The grounds surrounding the Parkview Creamery have undergone a great transformation during the past month at the hands of the new owner, Mr. F.S. Coffey. To the casual observer the new proprietor looks like a capable, energetic fellow and it is seldom that one sees him standing around idle. Most of the work accomplished about the factory has been done by Mr. Coffey himself and this together with his past record in the creamery business augurs well for the success of the enterprise.

A.E. Kearney, manager of the Royal Bank branch at Schomberg and formerly of the St. Marys Royal Bank staff, is being sued by William Thompson, furniture dealer who claims $5000 damages for a broken hip following an alleged incident. Mr. Thompson says he was standing on a ladder fixing an electric light bulb when the defendant, driving a motor car, knocked the plaintiff off the ladder.
