20 Academic Traditions

DEAR GRADUATES, On behalf of the Grantham University faculty, staff and administration, I extend our sincere congratulations on your spectacular achievement of graduation. Today marks the culmination of hard work, sacrifice, anticipation and triumph, and we are delighted to celebrate this special occasion with you. The Class of 2021 is unique, in that you persevered through challenges and uncertainties our society has never seen before. You adapted to changing circumstances and a new ‘normal’ while still making your education a priority. And remember, your experience at Grantham has been entirely online from the beginning. In these times when we’re left with no choice but to live certain parts of our lives in a virtual environment, you are ahead of the curve. The rest of the world is just now catching up. I would like to thank you for affording each of us at Grantham the honor of serving you and being part of your success. From the moment you joined our Grantham family, it has been our privilege to be a part of your journey. It gives us great pride to have made a difference in your lives, as you have forever made an impact on ours. As we cherish the significance of today’s celebration, consider how this achievement has prepared you for the next chapter in your life. The education, abilities, connections and confidence you have gained with this diploma will serve as a foundation for tremendous successes to come. Today, you are equipped. You are qualified. You are ready to change the world. How you apply this degree will define your future and the impact you have on others, so don’t hold back. As you watch and participate in today’s virtual ceremony, remember that ours is a lifetime relationship. Go forth with pride, and please keep in touch. Congratulations again, and welcome to the next class—the class we call alumni.

Wishing you all the best,

GRANTHAM UNIVERSITY WAS FOUNDED BY A VETERAN IN 1951

100% ONLINE BEGINS WITH 100% DISTANCE EDUCATION

World War II Veteran Donald Grantham understood the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944 (commonly called the G.I. Bill) could potentially help transform the lives of his fellow veterans and their families through education, leading him to found what would become Grantham University.

Donald Grantham decided to make a significant change and concentrate Grantham College of Engineering’s operations completely on distance education. This change allowed Grantham College of Engineering to stand out as the only school in the United States to offer an accredited Bachelor of Science in Electronics degree through distance education.

KEYNOTE & ALUMNI SPEAKER DR. MARY KELLY, KEYNOTE SPEAKER Mary Kelly, PhD, CSP, CDR, US Navy (Ret.) is the CEO of Productive Leaders, a world-renowned economist and an authority on leadership. She is the author of 11 books and has been quoted in hundreds of publications including Forbes, Money Magazine, Entrepreneur, Yahoo Finance, Success, the Wall Street Journal and more. Kelly served as an intelligence officer in the Navy before specializing in the operation of military bases. In addition to her military awards, Kelly has received numerous speaking honors as a MENSA member, including the Air Force Academy Instructor of the Year, Outstanding Educator Award, National Speakers Association-Colorado Member of the Year and the Navy League Leadership Award.

18 Keynote & Alumni Speakers

/

With a combined 25 years of experience training military and civilian personnel, and a command on human resources, finance, insurance, organizational leadership, strategic planning and project development — Kelly develops effective strategies for business leaders to enhance productivity, communication and profit growth. She earned a BS from the United States Naval Academy, an MA in Economics from the University of Oklahoma, an MA in History and Foreign Policy from the University of Hawaii, and a PhD in Economics from Greenwich University.

MICHAEL ALIAMUS, ALUMNI SPEAKER Michael Aliamus began his aerospace career in 1987 at the age of 24, working as a carpenter for Ford Aerospace (later named Space Systems/Loral). For more than 33 years, he worked his way up to the position of Senior Distinguished Engineer, Spacecraft Architect. He solidified that accomplishment in January 2021 by obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering Technology degree from Grantham University. Aliamus graduated with Summa Cum Laude honors. Though confident on the surface, earning his degree silenced an ever-present insecurity he had grown used to carrying. Thankfully, when his oldest daughter entered college, she applied not-sogentle encouragement for him to complete his degree. He already held the highest engineering position in his company, so his pursuance of a degree was not to move up in his career, but rather to create opportunities for when he retires. His goal is to work for the National Transportation Safety Board as a Go Team member, investigating transportation accidents.

ACADEMIC REGALIA Academic regalia of robe and hood are believed to have had their beginnings at the English universities of the 12th and 13th centuries. In 1754, with the founding of what is now Columbia University, academic robes crossed the pond to America. In 1895, a universal code of design and color for academic garb was adopted and changed most recently in 1960. Today, styling for the hoods and robes vary by the degree involved.

20 Academic Traditions

/

REGALIA CODE The color of the hood’s velvet border indicates the field of study, while the lining reflects the colors of the degreegranting institution. The sleeves of the bachelor’s degree gown are pointed and worn closed. Gowns for the master’s degree and the education specialist have oblong sleeves, open at the wrist with the rear part cut square and the front part with an arc cutaway. The doctoral gown is faced with black or blue velvet. Three bars cross the bell-shaped sleeves to signify the three levels of education.

THE ACADEMIC MACE The ceremonial Academic Mace is a historical amalgam of the regal scepter of rulers with the weapon-like instrument known as a mace. By the 16th century, the mace, a symbol of faculty authority, was embraced as a ceremonial object by colleges and universities. GRANTHAM UNIVERSITY’S MACE Crafted in 2009, Grantham University’s Mace was designed as a visual symbol of the desire to be all that we can regardless of where we originate. The Mace was designed by a master craftsman, Tom Boley, of Red Oak Hollow Architectural and Artistic Woodturning in Purcellville, Virginia. SYMBOLISM OF THE UNIVERSITY’S MACE At the top of Grantham’s Mace sits our “Fighting Eagle” mascot. The circular face at the upper portion represents our faculty and staff. The seal in the center of the large ring symbolizes the University’s authority. The two rings under the seal represent both our Vision and Mission. The shaft represents Grantham’s student body, growing in their educational endeavors and experiences as the shaft expands from a narrow bottom to a broad, wide top. The globe at the bottom symbolizes our worldwide student body and faculty.
