Upon Further Reflection Companions and Sir Knights, Anne and I have been traveling a lot since Grand Sessions & so far it has been very enjoyable. Just last night (July 3rd) we had a fantastic dinner at Van Nuys as guests of Signet Chapter No. 57, Van Nuys Chapter No. 135, Omega Council No. 11, and Los Angeles Commandery No. 9. I wish to thank these Companions and Sir Knights for their wonderful hospitality and the fantastic event! Today, we participated in the 4th of July parade hosted by Old West Lodge No. 813 and Los Angeles Commandery No. 9. This parade, if I am informed correctly, was started about 25 years ago with just a farmer, his tractor & trailer and 6 bales of hay; plus several cars. Then one night during the lodge stated meeting, Brother Richard Cooper asked if Van Nuys and Los Angeles Commandery could assist in next year’s parade and if they would also participate as a marching unit; and the rest is history. Now, having a short break after the festivities, I had better complete this article and send it to the old guy before he starts his belly-aching again (you’re welcome Richard) as I am already a day or two late. Those of you who were able to attend Grand Sessions and/or the Ventura reception may remember my remarks lamenting our continuing decline in membership, and my attempt at offering possible reasons why. Well, upon further reflection, it occurs to me that whatever the reason… I, and perhaps we, have been approaching this dilemma with an “oh woe is me” attitude! Yes, our numbers continue to decline. However, perhaps I, and we, should be optimistic and look upon this as a challenge. I am confident that “WE” are up to the task of turning this around. I believe it can be done. It must be done! So, this is my challenge to you: Go the extra mile one more time. Set a goal for your Council or your group of councils in your York Rite Association to add 2 or 3 members, or 5 or 10 depending upon your respective size. Even little ole Pacific Council No. 37 in Eureka, with only 10 active members, added 3 members last year and has two more applications for membership now. So, I know it can be done. I look back just a few short years and remember that we have in our ranks the man who “wrote the book”, as it were, on how to increase membership in our bodies; Companion and Sir Knight Carlos Gonzales (REPGC). We need simply to get off of our duff and do it! So, let’s refer to that methodology, let’s “Think outside the box”, let’s “Color outside the lines”, let’s “Embrace the new technologies”, let’s “Ask the youngsters for their ideas” or let’s do all of the above; and then let’s get out of our own way!! It can be done…if we let it! With the greatest respect and humility,

William S. (Bill) Dann Most Illustrious Grand Master Cryptic Masons California
