Our Blessings Companions, As we count our blessings this holiday season, let us think what we can do to give others a blessing. We have, as Cryptic Masons, a chance to help millions with our charity, Cryptic Masons Medical Research Foundation. Helen Keller was once asked her opinion on being blind and she answered, “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision”. The doctors and researchers have the vision to help people with vascular disorders and have made huge advances in stem cell research. Now we need to have the vision to support this research with the gift of a donation. If each member of our Grand Council gave only $20 we could raise over $70,000. I know several people this research would help, even in my own family. Think of your friends and family you may know with vascular disease or diabetes that can be helped by the advance of this research. A gift of life the greatest gift you can give to someone you love. We learn from the start of our Masonic teachings that charity is an act of love. This is the season that exemplifies love and peace on earth, so let us remember what Scrooge learned at Christmas time and how Tiny Tim survived by an act of charity. This might seem corny but as true as to what one person can do. In the words of Albert Pike “That which we do for ourselves dies with us. That which we do for others is Immortal.” May you all have a wonderful Holiday, a Merry Christmas, and a prosperous New Year. Hope to see all ya’ll soon. God Bless, William E. Price KYGCH Most Illustrious Grand Master

Scholarships Companions, your children, grandchildren, & for some, great-grandchildren may receive financial help for attending school. After opening up Scholarship Center website, have them go to bottom of page & find the Scholarship Manual in (PDF format – 450KB) to download. There they will find instructions for filling out the forms. This is the link which will take you to the public Grand Lodge web page on scholarships. Rebuild-Refocus Over the past several issues I have alluded to the lack of Activities, Programs, Communications, and Ritual in many of our Councils and over the past eight years attending the Grand York Rite Sessions have listened to many of our Directors of Ritual bemoan this same fact. The “Last York Rite Mason” written by John Cooper and the “3-legged Stool” written by a Past Grand Master. have alluded to this lack of … resulting in a complacency issue. Companions, Grand Officers, Ritual Directors, Grand Illustrious Master, both present and past and those in our future, we must act and act now to bring the 3-legged stool, with seat, back to our Councils. This is a section of the bulletin published for Modesto York Rite Family whom are trying to find their feet. 

Programs: this year we should plan and implement a program to help children-in-need shoes, socks, shirts, etc. We can work with the local Lodges, churches to implement this portion of the 3-legged stool. Example: “The Masonic Angel Fund in Dennis (Cape Cod) today delivered 50 brand new backpacks to the Wixon Innovation School.”

Activities: First will be at our December meeting, on the third Monday. Modesto York Rite Family and myself will provide Chocolates, Wine, Juice, Coffee, etc., for the Ladies while we hold Commandery elections. Then if the ladies do not eat all the Chocolates nor drink all the wine, they will join us as we hold Templar Festive Board, Knight Templar Christmas Observance. Both Templar Festive Board and Knight Templar Christmas Observance are open to all Masons, their Families & Guest. Could we have some volunteers to help plan these events?

Each of our Convocations, Assemblies, and Conclaves will be open as much as possible, so please bring your lady and a guest. In this context we will need help in planning activities during and after our meetings unless the ladies want to sit around eating Chocolates, drinking Wine, and Gossip. 

Ritual: We would love to start doing Ritual again; obviously that is one of the legs of the 3-legged stool. Mark Master Chapters in England practice month’s prior to performance. Let’s talk about forming a degree team to do the Mark Master, Past Master, Most Excellent Master and Royal Arch Degrees. With assistance from Sonora and Stockton. This would also be putting the 3rd leg back on of our 3-legged stool. We can also plan to accomplish the Royal and Select Master Degrees, completing the full circle of the H.A. Legend. Then we would be stuck with the hardest part and that is the seat – seat being communications, we would have to search low and high for someone to fit this requirement.

Masons do not join our York Rite, or Shriners, to drive 50 or more miles to listen to the reading of our past minutes, pay bills, and drive 50 miles back home. Shriners are having fun at their stated meetings and Ben Ali Shrine, whose has a region much smaller than Grand Council of Cryptic Masons of California added 35 new members from the local blue lodges. I was talking to a group of guys (Masons) trying to get them to join York Rite and also Shriners since I am an Ambassador with Ben Ali Shrine. They decided to join Ben Ali Shrine because of Activities and Programs. Many of our Councils do not have programs, noticeable lack of Activities, and what can we say about Ritual. We talked about Ritual and not knowing each other, the comment about Ritual, “oh that is where you read from the book” Great Impression. We are an extension of the blue lodge, we continue building upon and completing the legend of H.A., yet we leave a lot out. We talk about H.A., the day before and the day after, we talk about the keystone, we talk about finding of the principle secrets, we talk about… If we continually say we are an extension of the Blue Lodge, let’s act like we are a part of the blue lodge. Questions:  Grand Officers:  When was the last time you visited a Council other than the Council to which you are attached.  I do not mean the one you attended because Illustrious Grand Master was in the area but the Council you attended on your own. We should become active not just wearing title and apron.  When was the last time you attended all the councils within your department?  When was the last time you supported the Assistant Director of Ritual for your department in organizing a School of Instruction?  Assistant Directors of Ritual:  When was the last time you attended all the councils within your department? We have 10 Departments with 14 Cryptic Arches  When was the last time you organized a School of Instruction for your Department?  Inspectors:  When was the last time you attended all the councils within your arch?  When was the last time you held a School of Instruction for the Councils within your Arch? Personally, would love to see a monthly School of Instructions for the Councils within your Arch, as in the Blue Lodge but let’s set an obtainable goal – School of Instruction twice a year then we can migrate to Quarterly. All the above is hard to answer, for 2016 a notice has NOT been posted on-line or passed down to the council about a school of instruction. I know of two for Grand Chapter but only because I read the Workman and I know in March 2017 Grand Chapter will hold a School of Instruction in Hanford, let’s see that is November, December, January, February … Please do not say the Sword and Trowel may have had a notice, it didn’t. I know this is brutal but Grand Officers, ADR’s, and Inspectors are the “Ambassadors” to the councils in their Department, Cryptic Arch. They interact with Companions of the Councils within their jurisdiction and when they schedule a School of Instruction we get to react with the other councils. By this gathering we become knowledgeable in our ritual and each council performs the same ritual. I would say there is a long road ahead of us but actually if we look down, the road is just a deer path, kinda wanders. Richard Thornton, KCT, KYCH

Symbolism of the Royal Master Degree This degree is a discourse between H.A. and three Fellowcraft on how they could attain the rewards of a Master Mason and discover the ‘MASTER’S WORD’. The ‘word’ throughout Freemasonry is not so much a word but the discovery of ‘ultimate and spiritual truth’. No single word will provide the complete answer so the word is a symbol of much greater import. The Fellowcrafts having worked diligently in the construction of their physical temple ask H.A. for a simple way of receiving the ‘Ultimate and Spiritual Truth’. They are informed that there is no easy way! The soliloquy is one of the most inspiring pieces of ritual in Freemasonry. When we examine its’ content we become aware that the destruction of the physical temple is inevitable and Truth is buried in the center. It proceeds in three stages: 1. The inevitability of death. ‘The young may die, the old must die…’. We also are informed that the dissolution of all physical trace of life will be of no consequence unless supported by a spiritual development. 2. The building of our spiritual temple. ‘The teeming brain, the skillful hand and the sinewy arm are alike useless and superfluous in the grave.’ We must strive while in our physical state to complete out material and physical temple and begin the process of spiritual regeneration. 3. That only after the destruction of the material and physical temple with the discovery and fulfilment of the spiritual temple will we find the ‘Ultimate and Spiritual Truth’. ‘After the strong hand of death has leveled all……… and the wise purposes of the Divine Architect will be displayed in all their splendor.’ Finally, we are introduced to the center ‘it will be buried there.’ That has a deep symbolic import for it not only refers to the symbolic center of the Lodge or our Material world but also to the symbolic center of the psyche. In the Royal Arch we discovered that the Ark was buried deep in the crypt – the symbolic center of the Temple. Within the Ark was deposited the Book of the Law (Faith) the Pot of Manna (Charity) and Arron’s rod (Hope) The broken triangle is a symbol of incomplete Spirituality. The triangle or delta is a symbol of the triune aspects of God: to the Christian it is the Omnipotent, Omnipresent and Omniscient aspect of God and also God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost; to the Hindu it is Brahma (creator), Vishnu (preserver) and Shiva (destroyer); To the ancient Egyptian it was Osiris (husband), Isis (wife) and Horus (son); and the ancient Norse it was Odin (war), Freyr (fertility) Thor (destruction) to name but a few. The triangle is broken and cannot be completed. The broken square is a symbol of incomplete Materiality. The four lines of equal length and equal angles is a symbol of perfection. The four corners of the Lodge are represented by the four Cardinal Virtues: Temperance, Fortitude, Prudence and Justice. It also relates to our Intellectual, Material, Emotional and Spiritual performance in life. The four elements of nature: air, water, fire and earth are represented by the four sides of the Lodge. The quintessence is the center of the Lodge where ‘it will be buried there.’ Therefore, these three Theological Virtues with the four Cardinal Virtues are the composite of the triangle and the square that have to be completed before we can aspire to a Deification and discovery of Ultimate and Spiritual Truth for which there is no easy path.
