Communication and Unity Companions, As most of you know my theme for the year is Communication and Unity. As I travel around the Western states and especially California I see a continual need for both. We need to understand that there is a great range in age and how we look at the world. But this is what makes being a Mason so special. We bring men together of different backgrounds and set standards that bring us together as a family. We need to revisit our teachings and our obligations to each other from time to time to reinforce our actions to each other and strengthen our family. We learn from the very beginning that “Masonry unites men of every country, sect and opinion and causes true friendship to exist among those who might otherwise have remained at a perpetual distance”. We can learn from each other. The seasoned members can share their wisdom and knowledge and our young members can share their enthusiasm and share their new ideas. We also received the trowel and pledged, like the trowel, “to spread the cement that unites us into one sacred band, or society of friends and brothers, among whom no contention should ever exist but that noble contention of who can best work and best agree”. We can, through communication, settle our problems. I say to you that this year I am the Most Illustrious Grand Master and I have great responsibilities for one year to accomplish as much as I can and represent you wherever I travel, but I will always be a Mason and as such I will continue to help and represent Masonry to the best of my ability.

Hope to see all ya’ll soon. God Bless, William E. Price KYGCH Most Illustrious Grand Master

Response to actions of Grand Lodge of Tennessee Georgia Illustrious Grand Master Cryptic Masons California addressing the March Edicts of our Grand Master David Perry in response to the actions of the Grand Lodges of Tennessee and Georgia June 10, 2016 My Companions, On the Twenty-sixth of June, 2015, the United States Supreme Court issued a landmark decision affirming that the US Constitution guarantees the right of same sex marriage in all states. Most of you are aware that later in 2015, the Grand Lodge of Tennessee expelled Masonic brothers based on their exercising that constitutional right to same sex marriage. Both the Grand Lodge of Georgia and the Grand Lodge of Tennessee are currently excluding men from joining our fraternity based solely on adult same sex orientation. In March 2016, Grand Master David Perry joined several other Masonic Jurisdictions in suspending Masonic recognition or relations with the Grand Lodges of Tennessee and Georgia. As a result of Grand Master Perry’s edicts, Masons from Tennessee and Georgia may not be admitted to a tiled meeting in a California Masonic Lodge, nor in a tiled convocation of a California Chapter of Royal Arch Masons. Whether a Masonic brother’s spouse is a husband or a wife has no consideration in California Cryptic Masonry. Under our Grand Council Constitution, a candidate’s qualification for Cryptic Degrees are that he be a Master Mason and a Royal Arch Mason in good standing, of physical perfection sufficient to enable him to conform with the requirements of all the degrees, and that he must have resided in the State of California for the six months preceding the date of his petition. The scythe of time continues to change the complexion of Freemasonry. We no longer reject good men because they have been divorced; we accept bankers who charge interest on loans; we accept men who sell beer, wine, and spirits; and we accept men who have lost a limb serving in our nation’s military; this has not always been the case. Our California Lodges are filled with diverse brethren, whose personal creeds for the Supreme Being are as varied as their ethnicities, be it, Latino, White, Black, Asian, Polynesian, Middle Eastern, East Indian, Native American, or an admixture thereof. Likewise, we sit in California Lodges, Grand Lodge, and Cryptic Councils with brothers who have wives, same sex spouses, life companions of either gender, or no partners at all. Grand Master Perry’s edicts speak to the brotherhood of California Masons of all Masonic colors; Craft Lodge Navy Blue, Royal Arch Mason Chapter Red, Cryptic Council Purple, Allied Masonic Degree Council Green, and Knights Templar Royal Blue. Any Royal Arch Companion, who meets the criteria set forth in our Constitution for candidacy, will be welcomed to receive Cryptic Degrees in one of our Councils. Companions, take due notice and govern yourselves accordingly. Fraternally, Most Illustrious Companion William E. Price KYGCH Illustrious Grand Master, Cryptic Masons of California

Scholarships Companions, your children, grandchildren, & for some, great-grandchildren may receive financial help for attending school. After opening up Scholarship Center website, have them go to bottom of page & find the Scholarship Manual in (PDF format – 450KB) to download. There they will find instructions for filling out the forms. This is the link which will take you to the public Grand Lodge web page on scholarships. All the information you need should be right there. This is a complete manual that you can download that talk about all of the scholarships available from the California Masonic Foundation as well as the Scottish Rite, York Rite, Eastern Star, High Twelve, DeMolay, Job’s Daughters, & Rainbow for Girls.

Humor I found this joke on the Internet and I believe the following sentence must come first: “the Names have not been changed to protect the truly acquitted. This does not portray our current Illustrious Grand Master as he has been married over two years. Bill, our Illustrious Grand Master second anniversary was coming up and if there was one thing that got his wife Janet upset, it was not getting a thoughtful gift on a special occasion. Our Illustrious Grand Master quizzed all who would listen, including his friends, neighbors, fellow Companions, and even his favorite enemies, as to what would be an excellent anniversary gift. Our Illustrious Grand Master settled on a huge bouquet of flowers. Not willing to trust himself to pick out the right flowers, Bill called up a local flower shop with strict instructions to deliver the biggest, most beautiful bouquet of flowers first thing in the morning with the following note: “Happy Anniversary Janet, my love, Year Number Two. The morning of the Anniversary, our Illustrious Grand Master made certain Janet would be the one to answer the door as he waited in the other room. Janet screamed, “What in the Hell is this?” holding up the note “Happy Anniversary Janet, my love, You’re Number Two”. Elections will be held next week to fill the vacancy in the Grand Line of Cryptic Masonry.

Cryptic History The following is part of the Super Excellent Master Degree, written by Albert G. Mackey, M.D. in 1897. Zedekiah was the twentieth and last king of Judah. When Nebuchadnezzar had in his second siege of Jerusalem deposed Jehoiachin, whom he carried as a captive to Babylon, he placed Zedekiah on the throne in his stead. By this act Zedekiah became tributary to the King of the Chaldees, who exacted from him a solemn oath of fidelity and obedience. This oath he observed no longer than till an opportunity occurred of violating it. In the language of the author of the Books of Chronicles, "he rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God." This course soon brought down upon him the vengeance of the offended monarch, who invaded the land of Judah with an immense army. Remaining himself at Riblah, a town on the northern border of Palestine, he sent the army under his general, Nebuzaradan, to Jerusalem, which was invested by the Babylonian forces. After a siege of about one year, during which the inhabitants endured many hardships, the city was taken by an assault the Chaldeans entering it through breaches in the northern wall. It is very natural to suppose, that when the enemy were most pressing in their attack upon the devoted city, when the breach which was to give them entrance had been effected, and when perhaps the streets most distant from the temple were already filled with Chaldean soldiery, a council of his princes and nobles should have been held by Zedekiah in the temple, to which they had fled for refuge, and that he should ask their advice as to the most feasible method of escape from the impending dangers. History, it is true, gives no account of any such assembly, but the written record of these important events which is now extant is very brief, and as there is every reason to admit the probability of the occurrence, the original compiler of the degree was authorized to make the meeting of such a council a part of its legendary ceremony. By the advice of this council, Zedekiah attempted to make his escape across the Jordan. The result is so succinctly told in the simple language of the prophet Jeremiah, who was present during the siege and at the capture, that no other words could give as good a description. "And it came to pass that when Zedekiah the King of Judah saw them [the princes of Babylon] and all the men of war, then they fled, and went forth out of the city by night, by the way of the king's garden, by the gate betwixt the two walls: and he went out the way of the plain. But the Chaldeans' army pursued after them, and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho: and when they had taken him, they brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Riblah, in the land of Hamath, where he gave judgment upon him. "Then the King of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah in Riblah before his eyes: also the King of Babylon slew all the nobles of Judah. Moreover, he put out Zedekiah's eyes, and bound him with chains, to carry him to Babylon. And the Chaldeans burned the king's house and the houses of the people with fire, and brake down the walls of Jerusalem. "Then Nebuzaradan, the Captain of the Guard, carried away captive into Babylon the remnant of the people that remained in the city, and those that fell away, that fell to him, with the rest of the people that remained. But Nebuzaradan, the Captain of the Guard, left of the poor of the people, which had nothing, in the land of Judah, and gave them vineyards and fields at the same time."*

JACKSON H. CHASE, 33rd, published in 1870 has a little different version. On-line edition obtained from the Library of University of California. The ceremonies through which you have passed have a moral and historic significance. The historic alludes to the taking of Jerusalem, and the destruction of the Temple by Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon. Zedekiah who reigned at this time in Jerusalem was the uncle of Jehoiachim, The youthful king placed at eighteen years of age upon the throne. The former name of Zedekiah was Mattaniah. The change of name was to indicate that the justice, and not the gift of the Lord, imparted to him a scepter at the pleasure of the Babylonish monarch. Nebuchadnezzar's final and fatal siege of Jerusalem began on Friday the 30th of December, in the 588th year before the Christian Era, being the seventh year of Pharaoh Hophra, King of Egypt. The King of Judah besought the aid of Egypt against the Chaldeans. Pharaoh attempted to interpose, but the result was to no purpose, as the prophet had foretold. Pharaoh's demonstration only occasioned an intermission of the siege for a period of about one hundred days. The city yielded to the Chaldean power and to famine on Wednesday, the thirteenth of June. Deducting from the 530 days since the forts were built about Jerusalem, the probable interval of 100 days, wherein Pharaoh diverted the attention of the Chaldeans, and we have the 430 days during which Ezekiel was called upon prophetically to bear the iniquities of Israel and Judah. Zedekiah, dreading the fury of the monarch to whom he owed his own elevation, had fled from the city, but was pursued by the Chaldeans and captured in the plains of Jericho, about eighteen miles from Jerusalem. Northward from this, 100 miles distant, was Riblah, in the region of Hamath, where Pharaoh Nechi had put in bonds the humiliated Jehoahas, son of Josiah. At this place Nebuchadnezzar now had his quarters, and to him the troops conducted the captive Zedekiah: "And they slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and put out the eyes of Zedekiah and bound him with fetters of brass and carried him to Babylon." Thus were verified what had seemed to be the contradictory prophecies of Jeremiah and Ezekiel. The former predicting of Zedekiah: "Thine eyes shall behold the eyes of the king of Babylon, and he shall speak with thee mouth to mouth, and thou shalt go to Babylon." And the latter announcing, "I will bring him to Babylon to the land of the Chaldeans, yet he shall not see it though he shall die there." Nebuzaradan, the commanding officer of the Chaldean army presented himself at Jerusalem on Wednesday, the 11th of the succeeding month, and on the following Sabbath, the 14th of July, he completed his cruel and profane ravage in plundering and burning the Temple and city. The history prepares us for the thrilling and sacred theme of the pious and wonderful rebuilding of the Lord's house. The moral purpose of this degree is to inculcate true devotion in spirit and in truth to the Great I AM, in contradistinction to idolatry; to teach traditionally life's vicissitudes; to encourage generous hospitality and friendship; to enlighten the mind and amend the heart, that we may become wiser and purer, brighter and brighter unto the perfect day, and by precept and example to excite our Brethren to moral action and the amiable practice of sincere devotion toward God, and of all the social virtues. It also inculcates the faithful fulfillment of our several vows, and the fearless discharge of our respective duties; and teaches us, that the violation of our solemn vows, as in the case of Zedekiah, the last king of Judah, will not only cause us to forfeit the respect and friendship of our Companions, but will also most surely destroy our own peace of mind. Then let us, my Companions, labor diligently and fearlessly in the cause of Truth our allotted time, doing with our might whatever our hands find to do, so that, when at the time of the third watch our work is finished, we may be greeted as Super Excellent Masters, and be released from our captivity in the flesh, to return over the rough and rugged way of the valley of the Shadow of Death to our abiding-place, eternal in the heavens, there to erect our last and perfect moral and Masonic Temple and adore the Holy One of Israel throughout the endless cycles of eternity.
