Councils at Work Companions, Summer has officially ended and our Councils are hard at work on degrees. In Southern California there were three festival classes. Recent festivals in San Bernardino, Escondido and Van Nuys saw nearly 40 companions receive the Select and Royal Master Degrees. There is another Festival scheduled for Alameda for the first Saturday in October. The third weekend will mark the 25th year for the Colorado River Fall Festival. Sword and Trowel Council U.D. held its first meeting and a research paper was presented. Next month Illustrious Edgar Fentum, KYCH will present a paper on the esoteric aspects of Cryptic Masonry at the meeting. Mark Master degree will be presented at Grand Lodge. There is no cost and it’s a great way to introduce your brothers to the York Rite. If some of your Lodge members are going please assure they sign up for the degree. Sincerely and Fraternally, Brett MacDonald Illustrious Grand Master

Itinerary This year I will be emailing out a calendar monthly and if able to attend please make your reservations, in a timely manner. If you have any questions please feel free to call me (626) 991-6688.

Tribute Companions, Earlier this month we sadly lost a giant in Masonry. David Macaulay Shull, KYCH passed to that Celestial Lodge above. He was a fixture in our beloved and gentle Craft for many years. He set an example for all of us to follow. David was that Mason who was always helping in any way he could. When you saw him he would meet you with a hardy handshake, a warm smile, and that special twinkle in his eye. Always willing to listen and when he talked, it was always meaningful. We will miss him, but never forgotten. His memory will live on if we try our best to live up to his example. If we do this, our Craft will continue to flourish and be the fraternity we are known for. I know he will be watching us to make sure we are do thing to his standards and he will say good job. I know that when he met the Supreme Master, He said to David “you are indeed worthy and you can receive your reward; well done, good and faithful servant”. As we say when we bid farewell to a brother;” So, in the bright morning of the resurrection, thy spirit shall spring into newness of life and expand in immortal beauty, in realms beyond the skies. Until then dear brother, until then farewell”. Fraternally, Bill Price, Deputy Grand Master

Scholarships Companions, your children, grandchildren, & for some, great-grandchildren may receive financial help for attending school. After opening up Scholarship Center website, have them go to bottom of page & find the Scholarship Manual in (PDF format – 450KB) to download. There they will find instructions for filling out the forms. This is the link which will take you to the public Grand Lodge web page on scholarships. All the information you need should be right there. This is a complete manual that you can download that talk about all of the scholarships available from the California Masonic Foundation as well as the Scottish Rite, York Rite, Eastern Star, High Twelve, DeMolay, Job’s Daughters, & Rainbow for Girls.

Humor This is the place for Masonic Humor but this one is really funny and is dedicated to all Veterans but especially to all my friends, the Marines. A large group of ISIS fighters in Iraq are moving down a road when they hear a voice call from behind a sand dune: “One Marine is better than ten ISIS fighters.” The ISIS commander quickly orders 10 of his best men over the dune where a gun-battle breaks out and continues for a few minutes, then silence. The voice once again calls out: “One Marine is better than one hundred ISIS ‘S.O.B.s’.” Furious, the ISIS commander sends his next best 100 troops over the dune and instantly a huge gun fight commences. After 10 minutes of battle, again silence.

The voice calls out again: “One Marine is better than a thousand ISIS fighters.” The enraged ISIS commander musters 1,000 fighters and sends them to the other side of the dune. Rifle fire, machine guns, grenades, rockets and cannon fire ring out as a terrible battle is fought… then silence. Eventually, one badly wounded ISIS fighter crawls back over the dune and with his dying words tells his commander, “Don’t send any more men…it’s a trap! There are TWO of them.”

Cryptic History Reference: Text Book of Cryptic Masonry (A Manual of Instructions in the Degrees of Royal Master, Select Master, & SuperExcellent Master) together with the ceremonies of Installing the Officers, Constituting & Dedicating a Council, & Installing Officers of a Grand Council By Jackson H. Chase, 33rd, Grand Lecturer Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of the State of New York

The thought is to give a little history behind the degrees. The Prayer at Opening a Council in the year 1870 is the same as is today – no changes. In the year of 1870 an Psalm is read after the Opening Prayer: “His foundation is in the holy mountains. The Lord loveth the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob. Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God. Selah. I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon to them that know me. Behold, Philistia, and Tyre, with Ethiopia: this man was born there. And of Zion it shall be said, This and that man was born in her: and the Highest himself shall establish her. The Lord shall count, when he writeth up the people, that this man was born there. Selah. As well the singers, as the players on instruments, shall be there, call my springs are in thee.” Reference: Psalms 87, verse 1 through 7.
