Grand Sessions Companions, We are soon coming into the spring of 2015. This Grand Council Year is almost over, yet there is still much to be done. Many of you are preparing for spring festivals. Others are attending our Grand Director of Ritual’s Schools of Instruction. Some of your Grand Officers are attending the Grand York Rite Officers Conference in preparation for the California Grand York Rite Sessions in Bakersfield on May 16-20, 2015. That being said NOW is the time to make your reservations for our Grand Sessions. Our Grand York Rite Sessions are open to all York Rite Masons. However, every Constituent Council in California is required to be represented at our Grand Council Session. It is the Dais Officers responsibility to be there to represent their Council or, if unable to attend, have a properly selected proxy attend in their place. The forms are attached to this copy of the Sword and Trowel. All the information you need can also be accessed at the Grand Sessions website: CA-GYRS.ORG In addition, now is the time for all the California York Rite organizations to buy advertising space in the Grand Sessions Souvenir Program. The funds raised by this program are instrumental in providing many necessities at the Sessions. That form is also attached to this issue of the Sword and Trowel and available on the CA-GYRS.ORG website. Have a wonderful spring, and I look forward to seeing you at Grand Sessions, and possibly sooner.

Sincerely and Fraternally, David Chesebro, Grand Master

Leaders I have recently been contemplating what our craft needs to preserve our future and leadership jumped to the forefront. We need to continue to train our leaders but even more important we need to train our future leaders. We, as current leaders, have extremely full plates and need to allow our younger members to elevate themselves to higher responsibilities. We have a wonderful program in place and Companions Ramsey, Downey, and Hall have updated this program to be more effective each year it has been implemented. We now need to have our future leaders attend this Leadership Program and allow them to occupy leadership roles in our Councils. One of the most important roles in our councils is the Recorder. I was talking to Most Illustrious Ken Hope the other day about the great turnover of recorders and the need of better training for our recorders. One of the best ways to insure this need is to have an assistance recorder so each council has a ready-made replacement if needed. A well-oiled Grand Council runs only if all our Councils send all necessary paper work and per capita in on time and get all the paper work to the Grand Recorder properly filled out. The Grand Recorder is working on making it easier to accomplish this with interactive forms on the Grand York Rite web site. This will take time but we are working towards making more effective communication a reality. Your Grand Officers well continue to make improvements where needed and we welcome your input because this is OUR Council. May God Bless You All.

Fraternally, William E. Price KYCH Grand Principle Conductor of the Work

It’s Party Time March, 2015 My Fellow Companions and Revered Ladies, We’re having a party! Join us for our dinner and dance and see for yourself what a good time we have. We’ll have good food, good attitudes, and good company. That would be three times good. Battalion and Belles is a Council organization formed to provide support to our Most Illustrious Grand Master as he travels around the State on visitations, out of State to other Grand Sessions, and overall, be the spoke-person for the Cryptic Council in California. Even with a stipend from the Grand Council, he will spend more of his own money during his year on lodging, meals, transportation and communication. That’s where we come in. Your yearly dues of $10, your purchase of our handsome medallions for $15, and any donation you may wish to make, comprises a fund which we present to the newly elected Most Illustrious Grand Master at a luncheon in Bakersfield during the Grand Sessions with our best wishes for a successful year. Our beloved Lady Janet Price has reserved the Burlingame Lodge #400, 145 Park Rd., Burlingame, on Saturday, April 25 for our dinner and dance. Most Masons and surrounding citizens know Lady Janet’s reputation for baking addictively delicious treats. With Janet’s direction and other Ladies help, they will prepare a balanced meal for you to consume at a minimal expense, $12, and your belly will be so happy. Please circulate the enclosed flyer and invite your fellow Companions and friends to this event, we only ask that you bring a smile, an appetite and some spare cash. We’ll be happy to see you and meet new friends. Fraternally, Guy M. Chalmers, President

CMMRF Companions, It is the season for remembering those who need of our help in many ways. It is the time to give to those charities that mean to most to use personally. To me it is our charity, Cryptic Masons Medical Research Foundation. If you have not given this year now is the time to do so. All donations need to be in by December 26, 2015 so that I may process the proper receipts and mail all donations to Cryptic Masons Medical Research Foundation in Nashville, Indiana. Please take a few minutes and think about our charity. Listed on the Grand York Rite Website http://www.yorkriteofcalifornia.org/council/council.html are the websites with all the information to help you in your decision. There they will find instructions for filling out the forms. This is the link which will take you to the public Grand Lodge web page on scholarships. All the information you need should be right there. This is a complete manual that you can download that talk about all of the Sword & Trowel
