Calculating the Costs of Homeownership If you’re in the middle of your home search, you already know that there are many factors that affect a property’s price, how much a bank will lend you, and how much your monthly payments may be. But are you aware of some of the other costs of homeownership? Fortunately, they aren’t so high that you should be scared away from purchasing a home. Even so, a smart homebuyer should consider these extra costs that may arise. Even though “Radiant Orchid” is the color of the year, you don’t want it on your walls One of the advantages of being a homeowner is making decisions about how you want your house to look. That may mean a simple project like painting the walls, one that’s a little more involved like replacing the kitchen faucet, or a big renovation. Putting your special touch on your home is exciting, but it’s not going to be free. Expect to spend money on supplies or labor to make those changes you desire, or to buy that new furniture that is a better fit for your new space. When you can’t DIY … Another joy of homeownership is learning that you are a lot handier than you expected. But sometimes there aren’t enough YouTube videos to teach you how to make a repair, or it would take you too much time to learn. That’s when you’ll need to hire a professional to handle the job. Even if your house is brand new, expect the unexpected—you may have to shell out some cash to fix problems or keep your house maintained. You never needed a lawnmower at your apartment Depending on what kind of property you purchase, you may need some additional tools to help you maintain it. You may not even have a tool kit—if your landlord took care of your repairs, it’s not all that surprising. Yard tools like a rake, lawnmower, shovel, and shears might be something you need to make over that flowerbed. And although you might want to spend your money on other items, remember that it’s a lot cheaper to buy a ladder and clean your gutters than replace them because they were ruined from debris.

Choosing the Right Light Bulb The way you light your home is changing, starting with how you shop for light bulbs. In addition to new choices in technology — state-of-the-art LEDs or CFLs, for example — you have a variety of options in terms of brightness, as well as how long you want the bulb to last. In addition, you have the option of spending more money up front on an energy-efficient bulb that can save you money in the long run. The good news is you don’t have to be an Edison to find the right bulb. Use these tips and resources to pick the perfect bulb for your home: Calculate your savings Before you hit the stores, do your homework. Determine what lighting attributes are important to you, whether it’s long life, instant-on, dimming capabilities, bulb shape, or luminosity. Different bulb technologies offer different benefits. To boil down how much switching to a more efficient bulb means for you, look for resources like the savings calculator GE offers at It shows consumers how much they’ll save with a simple switch from incandescent bulbs to GE’s Energy-Efficient Soft White bulbs, which operate much like incandescent bulbs but are up to 28% more efficient. Check the facts The back of every new light bulb package now includes a “Lighting Facts” label that is similar in form to the nutrition label on the back of food boxes. The Lighting Facts label provides information about lumens (brightness), energy cost, life expectancy, light appearance (warm versus cool light), wattage, and mercury content. Mandated by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the label is meant to standardize how companies in the lighting industry convey light bulb features, helping you to quickly make comparisons between bulbs and bulb technologies. Look for lumens, not watts

In addition to the Lighting Facts label, some light bulb packaging is placing more emphasis from classifications by watts instead classifications by lumens. While you may have equated watts with brightness every time you made a bulb purchase, in true lighting terms, this gauge isn’t accurate. Watts are merely the measure of electrical energy used to light a bulb. A lumen is a measure of the bulb’s brightness. Simply put, the higher the lumen number, the brighter the bulb. So, if you are looking for a brighter light, look for a higher lumen number on the box. The same isn’t necessarily true for watts. In fact, a 13 watt CFL may be brighter than a 60 watt incandescent bulb. Examine new packaging Along with the Lighting Facts label, some manufacturers are going one step further in helping consumers decipher differences in bulbs by changing their packaging. For example, GE Lighting has implemented a color-coding system to help you better understand the light that will be emitted from each bulb. Color selections are modeled after the natural cycle of daylight, from sunrise to sunset. For example, yellow boxes represent bulbs with strong, vibrant light ideal for home cooking, cleaning and grooming, while purple boxes represent subtle and reassuring light for use at night. Published: February 10, 2014 Light changes color, so your lighting design -- a top priority for any remodel -- should help guide your color choices. Here’s how.

West-facing rooms: Evening light in these rooms is beautiful and warm, while scant morning light can produce shadows and make colors look dull. How Light Bulbs Affect Color The type of bulb you use can alter the colors in a room, too.

It’s all determined by the way light and colors interact. “People have to understand that the color of an object won’t look the same 24 hours a day,” says lighting designer Joseph Rey-Barreau. “I just had bamboo flooring installed throughout my house, and during the day it looks totally different than it looks at night.” The way we “see” color primarily depends on two things: 1. The light that an object absorbs. Black absorbs all colors; white absorbs none; blue absorbs red. 2. How the light source works. Natural light (sunlight) changes throughout the day and is affected by a room’s location. Artificial light changes with the type of bulb you use. How Sunlight Affects Colors As the amount and angle of the sun changes, so will your room colors.

Incandescents: The warm, yellow-amber light of these bulbs will make reds, oranges, and yellows more vivid, while muting blues and greens. Fluorescents: This flat and cool light enriches blues and greens. Halogens: These white lights resemble natural light and make all colors look more vivid. Using halogens would make the shift from daylight to artificial light less jarring. Compact fluorescent lights (CFLs): CFLs can produce either a warm white, neutral, or bluish-white light. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs): You can buy warmer or cooler LEDs, and even “smart” LED bulbs whose color you can control wirelessly. “You can point to the color of the sky in a picture at sunset and make the light bulb in the house be that same color,” says Rey-Barreau. Paint squares of primed drywall with samples of the colors you’re considering, and then move them around the room during the day. Apply at least two coats.

“Natural light should always be considered when choosing color for a space,” says Sarah Cole of the Farrow & Ball paint company. North-facing rooms: Light in these rooms is cool and bluish. Bolder colors show up better than muted colors; lighter colors will look subdued. “Use strong colors and embrace what nature has given,” says Cole.

Considering new carpet? View samples during different daylight conditions and switch on your lamps; it’ll give you a better idea of how your natural and artificial light will affect the carpet’s color.

South-facing rooms: Lots of high-in-the-sky light brings out the best in cool and warm colors. Dark colors will look brighter; lighter colors will virtually glow.

Evaluate samples of carpet during different daylight conditions.

Most contractors won’t hang lights before you paint, but you can get a color approximation by placing a bulb you’ll be using in a floor or desk lamp. If you’re hyper-sensitive to color or want a very specific look, ask your electrician to hang the lights, then cover them carefully during painting.

Remember that natural and artificial light will work together during certain times of day, especially in summer when dusk lasts a long time. Turn on artificial lights even during daylight to see what your colors will look like.

Paint sheen also affects color. Glossy finishes will reflect light and change the way the color looks, whereas flat finishes are less reflective and allow colors to look truer under bright light.
