Their famous sausages are made by hand using only the fnest quality ingredients, and their wild game is sourced from Northumberland and County Dur ham. On the back of a much delayed wedding in southern Italy we decided to extend our trip and take the train from Bari on the south east coast across country and through the mountains to Salerno and get a boat bus to the much lauded Amal !
We were clearly feeling the zeitgeist as the Amal coast, the area of south western Italy from Salerno, Amal the capital, Positano and Sorento proved the holiday hotspots for 2022.
We had found a tiny 6 bedroom hotel at the foot of the mountains just beyond the main streets of the town, accessed by elevator that ascended through the hill, we were greeted by spectacular views across the bay; Lemon groves, olive oil, pizza, pasta, sunshine and wine - Bliss! From Amal we caught the boat train to Naples, via Capri, the boat ride itself being almost two hours, a highlight of the trip, as we picked up more passengers from a half dozen picturesque candy pastel painted towns along the way.
Naples was a stopping point for visiting the volcanic ruins of Herculaneum and the legendary Pompeii - spending a day walking round both, with train links between and logging nearly 27 km to our exercise. Both of us hobbling to the last train like men twice our age once the sun set.
Rome, the capital, was our next stop; so even though neither of us are religious in any way, one cannot visit Rome without a trip to the Vatican. Not satis ed with the previous days arduous walk we headed up and into the dome of St Peters Basilica. Climbing a tight corridor stairway of more than 500 stairs, and sandwiched between two very large American ladies in almost 37 degrees humidity , my claustrophobia and vertigo were severely challenged, whilst Pip seemed just excited by the whole experience, even perhaps wickedly enjoying my mild terror at the situation.
Arriving at the roof of the basilica , to truly awe inspiring views of Rome there is a gi shop, just like Disneyland you leave the ‘attraction’ and are met with Nuns selling religious works, rosaries and such .
Pip had done his research so a er that epic climb we were keen for some lunch , and what better than Carbonara, made with traditional ingredients and a touch of black tru e. His research had paid o , as Il Tupano Nero, served up a 5 star home style pasta. Just wonderful!
Our last days were spent in Florence , meeting up with Portuguese friends who were touring the northern part of Italy , so lunch with them and then onto the U zzi Gallery to see the great Italian master works of Da Vinci , Botticelli etc. As Naples might be described as the dirtiest city in Italy, it’s streets piled with rubbish and “doggy doo doo”, Florence is totally the opposite, it’s streets so clean one might think it is vacuumed twice daily. Immaculate!

The self-taught bakers whipped, beat and piped their way through months of recipe testing before deciding to take their little cake show on the road.
