Graham Vincent

The Liverpool Labour Party are organising the event outside Liverpool Royal Hospital, imploring people to “join our local MP’s and councillors” and “make our voices heard, in the campaign for the future of our NHS”. But the Liverpool Solidarity Federation is calling for a unilateral demonstration against what it sees as the “hypocrisy” of Labour councillors in Liverpool. The Liverpool Solidarity Federation, which seeks the abolition of capitalism and the state, claim Labour would not end NHS cuts or the threat of privatisation should they claim ownership of the battle to save the NHS. It cites the Labour sell off of hospital services, thus undermining the Labour cause. All they would do, they say, is demobilize working class anger to their own ends. The National Health Service started in 1948 after the Beveridge Report reflected the very real fear of the ruling class that “if we don’t give them reforms, they’ll give us a revolution”. It is both the largest and oldest single-payer healthcare system in the world.

But the NHS has been beset by funding, service and job cuts, along with the threat of privatisation. The Liverpool Solidarity Federation believes the NHS will not be saved by voting Labour – it will be saved by building a mass movement, based on direct action, that gives the government that same fear once again. A contrary demonstration affronting Labour’s “hypocrisy” in opposing NHS cuts by the Liberal Democrat leadership fits correlates to this manifesto. On Friday 27 January, 11am – 3pm, the Liverpool Solidarity Federation will mobilize against a common cause…not to get the Tories out, but to safeguard the future of the NHS.
