THERE’S LIFE IN THE OLD REAR YET!

LIGHTWEIGHT WHEELCHAIRS

Barry Brooks, a C6 paraplegic, has recently changed to a Stimulite Contoured Cushion. He wrote about his experiences: ‘After but a day of sitting on this new cushion option for the posture-and-pressure-management-challenged amongst us, which just about includes us all, I discovered that there's life in the old rear yet. I've struggled for years to find the holy grail of a cushion that both protects me from the daily discomfort of sitting and answers the equally permanent desire to just sit a little better: to balance, sit straighter and stop me from slowly turning into Quasimodo. My bottom, back and belly have paid a heavy toll in keeping me and my wheelchair on the road! The Stimulite cushion was originally designed for people who are at high risk of skin breakdown but quickly realised comfort by itself was not enough. A good functional cushion has to provide stability too, and a great cushion has to do both exceptionally well if it's going to succeed where other seating solutions already hold formidable reputations.

Stimulite's secret is layers of honeycomb cells: three layers of honeycomb, each cell layer with a different firmness. The whole cushion weighs in at only a little over three pounds. So you don't have to be a weightlifter to manage your cushion. The contoured Stimulite is my current choice. It holds me with a lighter touch but it's somehow secure and freer; it keeps me in a good position while encouraging me to work a little to hold my new habit. Stimulite has a well-thought-out range of different cushions and covers. It’s certainly added to my rear-racked days, or rather it's taken away a noticeable amount of the ache and agony. You can even get sheets of Stimulite to drape over your easy chair or car seat.’

At the recent Back Up Ball, long time Gerald Simonds client, Richard Spencer received the The David Norman Cup, an award which celebrates outstanding achievement by an inspiring individual with a spinal cord injury. The annual ball is held by Back Up, the national charity that has helped thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds rebuild their confidence and independence following a devastating spinal cord injury. Presenting the award, Sean McCallion, Corporate Partnerships Manager for the Backup Trust said 'Richard Spencer has been injured since the early 80s. With 30 years experience of living with a spinal cord injury including raising a family single handedly, Richard got involved with Back Up in 2009, it was clear he had a great deal to offer and was quickly recruited by our mentoring team. Since then, Richard has become a familiar face and a vital part of the Back Up volunteering team.

Dedicated, determined and with bags of energy, nothing is ever too much trouble for him. In 2011 he trained as one of our first power chair skills trainers, delivering skills at a number of centres throughout the UK. One of the special things about Richard is the way he makes a concerted effort to speak to each individual on a one to one basis both during and after the skills sessions. An amazing role model for people of all ages, but especially for people of his generation, he speaks from personal experience and is never afraid to talk frankly about the ups and downs that life has thrown at him. Delivering wheelchair skills on the over fifties multi activity course this summer, Richard inspired others through his own continual learning. Having not been swimming since rehab in the 80s, he got into the pool for the first time, which was in his words MAGIC! He’s continued to swim locally and is loving being back in the water.’

New TILITE TRA RIGID WHEELCHAIR. Imagine the best, then go beyond. The TiLite TRA combines TiLite's noted smooth ride and high performance into a sleek custom-built rigid wheelchair. The TRA features the style and strength of a titanium dual-tube frame, which is specifically engineered to maintain rigidity, combined with complete adjustability. Hand built from Ti 3-2.5 seamless titanium tubing, the Tilite TRA weighs as little as 9kg, including the wheels. Titanium reduces fatigue on the wheelchair, resulting in greater durability and fewer

repairs. Angle-adjustable caster housings give the TRA a vertical and horizontal centre of gravity adjustment while dual-tube geometry stiffens the wheelchair, making each push more effective, with the sweeping curve of the lower frame tube creating a unique look. The TRA's adjustable camber mount incorporates TiLite's Tru-Fit system with up to 3.5" of rear seat height adjustment, while SpeedLoader Adjustable Front Caster Housings quickly and accurately adjust the fork angle in 1° increments. Available in a wide range of colours and finishes, each TRA is fully customised to each customer’s exact specifications. Performance and comfort built around you.

THINK SMART WITH THE SMARTDRIVE POWER ASSIST

The SmartDrive power assist device clips easily to the back of rigid framed wheelchairs with a solid axle/camber tube

The SmartDrive is a power assist device that clips easily onto the back of your chair, giving greater freedom to active chair users needing some power assistance. It simply and intuitively powers you up steep hills, through thick carpet and over grass, and takes kerbs in its stride. The SmartDrive rotates freely around the axle, floating along the ground; push to go and brake to stop, its that simple and it will power on for days on a single charge. Weighing in at only 11lb, with the battery adding another 8lb, the SmartDrive is light and easy to put on

and take off. Use it when you want, leave it in the car when you don't; the battery fits under the seat and the drive unit drops onto the axle. It's as easy as that. The SmartDrive is an excellent way to protect your shoulders from the everyday abuse of propulsion. It reduces the number of repetitive pushes by taking over once you get going. It does not do all the work, so you are still getting plenty of exercise and activity. You can see a video of the Smartdrive in action on the Smartdrive product page on www.geraldsimonds.co.uk

Anna (r) celebrates on the podium after winning bronze at the recent World Cup Championships in Copper Mountain, Colorado

In 2006, at the age of 26, Anna suffered a spinal cord injury whilst snow board racing in Japan. ‘Snow boarding was my big passion,’ she explained. ‘I hit a jump and crashed and the next thing I knew I’d broken my back. I spent five weeks in hospital in Japan and while I was there I was put in touch with a Canadian guy who does mono skiing. At the time I didn’t even know the sport existed! He was the one who inspired me to have a go at it. In fact my friend printed out a picture of him on a mono ski, flying through the air and I had that at the end of my bed for the next four months. I think it was that that got me out of bed and doing my exercises when times were tough. It is hard to try to make your legs move when you’re paralysed and they don’t want to move. I spent a lot of time on physio and rehab and it was the possibility of ski racing that kept me going.’

‘I found it really hard to start with - it’s hard to balance on a single ski and I was in the mountains, in perfect conditions and really wanted to be on a snow board. Emotionally I found that really tough. But I stuck at it and started racing in 2008 with the British Disabled Ski team.’ The coach of the team told Anna that she had the potential to get to the 2010 Winter Paralympics in Vancouver and after a lot of hard work and training, Anna was picked for the team. ‘I went to the games and it was an incredible experience,’ said Anna. ‘I actually did much better than expected, finishing sixth in the slalom, which at the time was my biggest achievement.’ After she was repatriated from Japan, Anna went to Stoke Mandeville Hospital to undertake rehab, and it was there that she was fitted for her first Gerald Simonds wheelchair, the start of a long relationship that saw her recently take on the role of Ambassador for the company. ‘I’m now an Ambassador for Gerald Simonds,‘ said Anna. ‘It’s nice to be able to represent a good company and to open other disabled people’s eyes to what is out there. I got my TiLite from them and it’s brilliant; it helps me get around and makes day to day life a lot easier than it would be in a heavier chair.’

Anna also has a FreeWheel all terrain wheelchair add-on which fits easily to her TiLite. ‘For me it’s very important to be able to go places where I wouldn’t otherwise be able to,’ she explained. ‘I can now go to places where I used to go, push around in woods or go up and down hills, which in a wheelchair on its own is very difficult. With the Freewheel it’s easy; I can get about, I can take the dogs for a walk, it’s great.’

Anna Turney with her FreeWheel

It’s important that you feel good ‘This is my third wheelchair but it’s by far the best. It’s light, it’s compact and it’s shiny! Probably that shouldn’t be the main thing, but you do live in it, so it’s important that you feel good in it as well. When it’s raining it’s so good to have a light, quick, easily transferable chair. I just take the wheels off, lift the chair and put it in the car. It takes about two minutes.’

Winter is the ideal time for the FreeWheelTM All Terrain Wheelchair Add-On. FreeWheel is a rugged, lightweight add-on wheel which clamps quickly and securely to the footrests of most existing rigid-frame chairs, allowing users to push over surfaces that would otherwise be difficult or impossible - even snow! The fantastic FreeWheel is currently on offer on www.gs-direct.co.uk for only £375 with free delivery.
