DCH Honored by the Alabama Organ Center DCH Regional Medical Center has been honored by the Alabama Organ Center and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for its dedication to organ and tissue donation. DCH is one of 13 hospitals to receive the AOC’s Gift of Life Award in recognition of the hospital’s efforts to educate staff and the public about organ donation. The hospital took part in a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services campaign to increase enrollment in state organ donor registries. Chris Meeks, Executive Director Alabama Organ Center, said that 25 lives were saved from nine donors at DCH last year and tissue donations from 11 Donor Heroes from DCH helped up to 1,100 people. Today, over 115,000 men, women and children in the United States, including 2,200 in Alabama, are on the organ transplant waiting list. About 22 people die each day because an organ does not become available in time.

New UAB Gardendale Freestanding ED and Medical Office Building Open The new UAB freestanding emergency department and medical office building in Gardendale opened and began seeing patients on January 15th. The $33.9 million dollar facilities are located on a 6.2-acre site in the Gardendale City Center at the corner of Mount Olive Road and Flippo Parkway. The emergency department has 26,700 square feet of space and an FAA-compliant heliport, advanced MRI/CT/X-ray imaging, 12 exam rooms, a bariatric lift, laboratory services, and a pharmacy. It is capable of performing trauma care and has facilities for isolation and decontamination. It provides the only emergency medical services on the I-65 corridor between Cullman and downtown Birmingham. The 38,400-square-foot, two-story medical office offers a variety of services from primary care, cardiology and neurology. The facility also has digital X-Ray, ultrasound and other testing abilities that will allow patients to visit that facility rather than traveling downtown in many cases.
