INTRODUCTION BY COTY
H
appy New Year! This January 2018 issue is dedicated to all of the people, horses, and other animals that have been impacted by the various California wildfires. I have lived in Santa Barbara for almost 28 years and I’ve seen many fires, but the Thomas Fire is without a doubt the worst. It’s been now officially called the largest wildfire in the modern history of California. Many people had to be evacuated including their horses. I was able to go out to the Earl Warren’s showgrounds and photograph some of the evacuated horses. I’d like to acknowledge Scott Grieve the CEO of the showgrounds for working with the Santa Barbara Equine Evac Team and others to stable horses and other barnyard animals, at no cost.
I
also want to thank all of the firefighters and crews that have worked so diligently to tackle all the fires. Some of the gentleman from the California Highway Patrol were convening at the showgrounds and they were gracious enough to let me take their picture! I thought the horses had amazing spirits, they could smell the smoke and instinctively they know it is their enemy, but they all seemed calm. They were talking back and forth to the other horses and they were popping their heads over their stable doors to greet me. I always feel so blessed to be around them, it is a joy to experience the friendship of all horses and to see their various personalities. Even some of the donkeys were “talking” to me too, everybody seemed eager to say hello!
I
hope that 2018 will be filled with bright promises for all of us, for regrowth in our lives where ever we need it, and the blessing of coming together as a community. God bless us all and our precious horses.

BROOKEUSA Brooke USA Announces Hannah Selleck as Newest Ambassador Brooke USA is proud to announce international Grand Prix show jumper, Hannah Selleck, as our most recent ambassador. Daughter of Hollywood stars Tom Selleck and Jillie Mack, Hannah fell in love with horses at an early age and enjoyed life around the ranch where she grew up in southern California. Though her parents worked as renowned actors, Selleck found her own passion and decided the equestrian lifestyle was the path where she wanted to focus her career. Selleck began competing by the age of 10 and her success throughout the sport has continuously progressed ever since. During her junior career Selleck won the team silver medal at the 2005 Prix des States junior jumper national championship. In 2006, she won the team silver medal at the 2006 NAJYRC, and then was the reserve champion in the 2007 USEF Hunt Seat Medal Finals. In addition, she won the Platinum Performance/USEF Show Jumping Talent Search Finals West as well as a team gold medal, individual gold medal and style of riding award at the FEI NAJYRC in 2008. “I hope that I can inspire others, especially equestrians, to support Brooke USA. I’m currently raising awareness through promoting their events, speaking to youth, and working on committees. Someday I would love to go on one of their trips and witness the relief first-hand.” – Hannah Selleck
