Welcome

to the 9th international Maritime Exhibition

Atlantic Fair 2019

As the Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands, I am delighted to welcome you once again to KlaksvĂk, the fisheries hub of the Faroe Islands. The Atlantic Fair has been successful and well visited; it has showcased the seafood industry on an international level. This is essential for the Faroe Islands as well as our international partners.

The exploitation of our natural resources has been the foundation of Faroese economies and our welfare for generations, and it will continue to be a key economic factor in the Faroe Islands in the years to come. The people in the North Atlantic depend on the sea and its natural resources. Adapting to the need for future sustainable growth in the fisheries sector is crucial for the people of this region. The companies that over the years have participated in this fair are living proof that innovation and adaptability go hand in hand and know no boundaries.

PAGE

I am confident that the Atlantic Fair will once again showcase the very best of maritime-related businesses in the North Atlantic region and worldwide.

Welcome to Atlantic Fair in Klaksvík

PAGE

Atlantic Fair is now being held for the eighth time and again it is our renowned fishing port of Klaksvík that has the pleasure of extending a welcome to both Faroese and overseas firms and to invite them to take advantage of the opportunities this event provides to meet, interact and acquire inspiration in multifarious fields of economic activity. It is not by accident that we describe our town as the fishing industry capital. More than a hundred years ago far-sighted individuals in what was then a small settlement saw the potential in the magnificent natural harbour we have and our strategic location for providing the basis for a thriving fishing industry. The rest is history and today we have developed to the point where we compete as a world class player with fishing ports in other nations. We take great satisfaction from this but are aware that although we are currently enjoying prosperous times there are very high demands on us to maintain this position. This has

6

strenghtened the determination of our companies to devote the necessary time and resources to remain at the forefront as global players. This positive spirit in relation to remain ing at the cutting edge of the industry is borne out by the record number of firms exhibiting here this year. There are a whole host of ambitious suppliers of goods and services eager to display their wares some of which can be utilised in other industries apart from fisheries. EXCELLENT SETTING FOR THE EXPO In Klaksvík we are immensely pleased that the organisers of Atlantic Fair have once again this year given us a vote of confidence by electing to hold the event here. It is a major consideration for us that we are provided with an opportunity

DEVELOPMENT AND FUTURE POTENTIAL In recent years Klaksvík Town Council has focussed on promoting diversity in

business activity. The result of this can now be seen in the opening of new restaurants and coffee shops which visitors to Atlantic Fair may care to patronise. We are also working with local businesses on a plan which will further enhance the Atlantic Fair experience in years to come. This is the construction of a hotel which which enable overseas visitors in particular to stay in Klaksvík for the duration of the event and provide them with a base to explore the striking scenic attrac tions of the northern islands of the Faroes. We are very pleased to bid you welcome to the biggest business expo ever in the Faroes and we hope that you are as pleased to be here as we are glad and honoured to be your hosts. Kind regards Jógvan Skorheim Mayor

PAGE

to showcase the varied attractions that our town has not only in the business sector but also in the cultural and sporting fields. We believe that some leisure time spent outside the exhibition hall can definitely be a rich experience. Atlantic Fair has now developed into a truly international expo and the organisers have played a major role in this process aided by strong support from industry in Klasvík and the su rrounding areas. In this way the event is a telling example of what can be achieved when the public and private sectors pull together and all concerned deserve a heartfelt thanks for this.

The Faroe Islands – unspoiled, unexplored, unbelievable

• NAME: The Faroe Islands (Føroyar) • LOCATION: In the middle of the Gulf Stream in the North Atlantic at 62º00’N and 06º47’W, halfway between Scotland and Iceland • TOTAL LAND AREA: 1,399km2 (540 square miles) • ISLANDS: 18 volcanic islands separated by narrow sounds and fjords arranged roughly in the form of an arrowhead. All but one are inhabited. • HEIGHTS: Highest peak 880m (2,887ft); average height above sea level 300m (980ft) • Climate: Average 3º11-ºC, wintersummer • POPULATION: 51,440 (as of Feb ’19) • LANGUAGE: Faroese. Danish has equal status in all official affairs • RELIGION: Evangelical Lutheran • GOVERNMENT: Parliamentary democracy • MAIN INDUSTRIES: Fishing and aquaculture, shipping and offshore services, tourism and prospects for petroleum in Faroese area • CURRENCY: Faroese króna (DKK)

Remotely clustered in the North Atlantic Ocean, a rugged archipelago of eighteen mountainous islands erupt out of the ocean in imposing basalt cliffs. The Faroe Islands, sandwiched between Nordic neighbours Iceland and Norway, offer vast, untamed and spectacular lan dscapes that are immediately impressive and undeniably compelling. Travellers are often made small by the grandiosity of the natural environment; the daunting sea cliffs, the unforgiving waves that ripple against the coastline, the lush green valleys surrounded by steep mountains. Days are lived as nature intended: without strife, without fuss, and always subject to the weather. Left in relative solitude since the first settlers arrived in the fourth century, the Faroese today exhibit a vibrant culture distinctly their own. Beyond fishing and shepherding, to be Faroese is to be creative and diverse. Gifted chefs cook world-class cuisine. Artisans create masterpieces with wool and fabric. Architects build. and musicians sing – with amber voices that crack in all the right places, against jazz and heavy-metal infused folk music that merges the past and present, and over the invasive drum beats of electro-pop and indie rock. The Faroese, a population of nearly 50,000 people, are endearingly hospitable and gentle in their manner. Love for their homeland is deep and honest. They are quiet natured, peaceful, and exercise a strong sense of community. Hospitality is innate; their doors are always open. The Faroe Islands, translated directly as “sheep islands”, is a self-governing nation under the external sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark. Culture is the seat of Faroese pride, with its inde pendent language, flag and traditions. In a generation, with the help of the prosperous fishing trade that accounts for approximately 20 percent of GDP, the Faroese have come into a cradle of affluence, seen to some degree in the widespread use of technology and well-established infrastructure that connects the 18 islands by roads, bridges and subsea tunnels, making it effortless to travel around the country. This, along with first class telecommunications and high-speed internet, provides a superb base for maintaining the economic, social and cultural sustainability of communities all around the country. Although the islands exude the sense of a mysterious land far away, they can be reached by air in only two hours from continental Europe.

Broad shoulders are needed to carry good times Interview with Frimodt Rasmussen, manager of Klaksvíkar Sleipistøð Norðlýsið has made an appointment with Frimodt Rasmussen, managing director. In 2018 Frimodt was chosen Leader of the Year at an annual event. And there is no dispute that both Rasmussen and his business is very popular amongst its customers. What we would like to know is how it all began, and where Klaksvíkar Sleipistøð (KSS) is heading.

PAGE

NORÐLÝSIÐ: – WHEN AND WHY DID YOU BUY THE KSS? FR: –” In 2011 I worked as an inspector for the shipowning business Thor in Hósvík. They had a ship in the slipway in Klaksvík (the word Sleipistøð means slipway). My apprenticeship was here, so I knew many of the people that worked here. One of these was Marianna Rasmussen. She asked me if I would like to buy her share of the company. At first, I refused, but when we talked about it later, I told her that if

16

Visit KSS at Atlantic Fair stand B-184

she got an approval to sell from all the other shareholders, then I would consider it. My father, Grímur Rasmussen, Simon Pauli Konoy, and myself owned a hedge fund called LGS. We had been involved in fish farming in the nineties and 00’s. This was now over, and my father was especially keen on buying. He grew up on “Stengurnar”, which is the area neighbouring KS, until he was 7 years old, so he had many fond memories about the shipyard and the workers there from that time. We agreed with the former owners about a price, and June 4th we took over the P/F (limited) Klaksvíkar Sleipistøð. During my employment at Thor I had the priviledge to be able to work around the globe. This gave me a somewhat unorthodox view on the organization of work. It also meant that I was not much at home. In 2010 the wife and I had a daughter, who has Down’s Syndrome. This was very demanding, and hence it was unfortunate for me to be away so much. Linda, my wife, also worked out of town. In order to be able to be closer to Ingunn, our daughter, we agreed that Linda should come to work for us at KSS. This enabled us to organize our daily life much better and reduced waiting time significantly. I told Linda “Let’s try this for five years and see if it is possible. Now 8 years have passed, and we are still here”, Frimodt says with a smile, and continues: When we started, between sixteen and eighteen people worked at KSS. We continued to work the same way as the old management had. The manager before me, Finnur Jacobsen, became

In 2006 we were a group of people, who establi shed Sp/f Kenit. This was a smithy based in the old Shell-station in Klaksvík. I was the manager there, but I wasn’t there on an everyday basis. Ólavur Hansen was the daily leader of the smithy. Now LGS had bought KSS, I was in a situation where I was manager of two companies that both competed against each other and cooperated. We were six people at Kenit. I talked to Hansen and the other owners and asked, if they were interested in coming to KSS to work. The logistics were better and there were more workers. We agreed upon, that Kenit should buy its way into KSS and move its activities there. This has worked out very well.

NORÐLÝSIÐ: – HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE EMPLOYED AT KSS? FR: – There are between 60 and 70 people working at KSS today. We work in the entire country and sometimes even abroad. NORÐLÝSIÐ: – WHAT ARE THE CORE SERVICES OF KSS? WHICH JOBS CAN YOU UNDERTAKE? Our specialties are engines, gears, steel and deck machinery. Of course, we have the shipyard too. There we have specialized in boat paint and to do this well. We are agents of the especially good International paint, and if you look around, you see how neat the boats are that are painted in KSS. It is not necessary to go abroad to get this done. You can compare that boats painted abroad to

PAGE

director of finances and is still here. Also, the leader of the smithy, Óla Hans Johannessen, continued his work, so I had competent support around me. Johannessen is now retired, however.

17

those painted on KSS and you’ll see that the work on KSS is at least as good. We have expanded in accordance with the demand. In 2012 we saw an oppor tunity to buy the pilot- and passenger boat Alpha Pilot. Right before we had bought Sp/f Føroya Diesel in Skála. We decided to transfer Alpha Pilot into Føroya Diesel and change the name of that company to Sp/f Búrhella. We also moved all operating equipment from Føroya Diesel to KSS. As time went by, we saw that it was very difficult to get crab cars for our activities. In 2015 we decided to purchase a new crab car. It soon proved both to small and too old, and we have since renewed to having two new and very practical crab cars. Other customers have noticed them and they are in high demand throughout the country.

PAGE

In 2017 we noticed the need of a new pilot boat. Alpha Pilot was becoming too small to accommodate the needs, so we bought Tjørnunes from Norway. It is built in 1994, has lot of power and is fast. It can push 12 tons and goes 25 miles. Tjørnu nes has mostly been used to toiling and piloting and has also been used for sailing people and parts out to the fishing fields when needed.

18

The same year I learned that Jóhannus Sólsker was stepping down from Sp/f JohsElektro, an electromechanics work shop that mainly deals with generators, electric engines, gears and the like. When I was an apprentice, we did all sorts of stuff. We sprayed metal on axels, rectified axels, repaired propeller blades etc. This kind of work is now extinct in the Faroe Islands. People here rather

send the equipment to companies abroad to have the work done. This has resulting in a loss of competence in favor of specialization abroad. It was with this in mind I went to Jóhannus Sólsker and asked him about his plans. We agreed that KSS should buy Sp/f JohsElektro in order to prevent losing these competences as well. Time has proven this was the right thing to do. We have several generators and electrical engines for repair, which otherwise would have been sent to other countries. The largest electrical engine we have made so far, weighed 11 tons. We are happy that Jóhannus Sólsker still is in JohsElektro. He has a lot of knowledge and teaches the others in the company. And there are young men ready to take over. Today there are 4 or 5 people working at JohsElektro. All in all, we can say that things have been positive. We are experiencing more activity, and this is of course demanding in terms of organization. NORÐLÝSIÐ: – SO, WHAT EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS DO YOUR EMPLOYEES HAVE? FR: – I realized in 2016 that I had too much to do myself. There was little time for development. It

We have blacksmiths, electricians, carpent ers, production technicians, engineers, captains, secretaries and storage workers. The qualifications are hence very broad and makes us mutually useful to each other.

To reach the clients better we have employed fulltime salespeople. These speak to the customers in order to find out their needs and enable us to meet the clients’ demands. Our drafting room is very handy and allows us to visualize the client’s ideas for both him and us, before the work begins. NORÐLÝSIÐ: – DO YOU HAVE MANY APPRENTICES AT KSS? FR: – We at the KSS wish to develop our compe tence. To achieve this, we employ apprentices so that the specialized knowledge there is can be maintained and developed. At the moment we have 21 smithy apprentices, one storage apprentice and two apprentices within electrical mechanics.

NORÐLÝSIÐ: – HOW HAS KSS CHANGED, SINCE YOU BECAME MANAGER? FR: – The financial situation has been all right. It requires a lot of capital to run a business like KSS. Times have been fortunate for us, and we are grateful. A Faroese saying goes, “broad shoulders are needed to carry good times” and we can only acknowledge that. We have tried to expand our market in the Faroes and have hence expanded service-wise as well. We are involved in building the new electrical facility Sunds verkið, and this has been a very exciting and beneficial assignment for us. We have high hopes for the future. We are working on new productions and with the possibility of building ships in the Faroe Islands. Norðlýsið thanks Mr. Rasmussen for the interview!

PAGE

was therefore needed to restructure the company. So, we hired a manager of operations in KSS. The manager of operations has three foremen under him, who see to that the assignments are done properly. We have also appointed a TSA (Technical Support and Sales). This makes us well-organized today. Another important issue is that we have things in stock. We therefore have a very wellequipped storage that others also use.

NORÐLÝSIÐ: – WHAT ARE KSS’S PROSPECTS? FR: – In 2014 the old smithy burned down. This resulted in a huge lack of space, and we needed to build a new building. This is about to be finished and we expect to move in later this month. This new building enables us to accommodate the customers’ needs even better.

We invest in our people Norðlýsið has interviewed Mr. Pætur Gerðalíð (PG below), who has works as sales manager for MP Teknik. NORÐLÝSIÐ: – WHEN AND HOW DID MP TEKNIK START? PG: – MP Teknik was founded in 2004 in Klaksvík by the brothers Malvinus and Petur í Gong. The company started out as a service and maintenance workshop for electronic equipment for households and smaller fishing vessels. Instead of just focusing on selling electronic equipment, the company chose to build its core on service and maintenance, something that has proved to become one of the strengths that MP Teknik has become known for.

PAGE

NORÐLÝSIÐ: – WHAT ARE THE CORE SERVICES OF MP TEKNIK? WHICH JOBS CAN YOU UNDERTAKE? PG: – After building up a reputation and capacity to repair equipment that would normally be done abroad in other countries, the company started getting inquiries from the maritime industry to start servicing radio and nautical equipment for fishing vessels and later on also from the aquaculture industry. 15 years later, MP Teknik has a team of 14 technicians, electricians, mechanical engineers and a sales team, that mainly focuses on three areas: The fishing industry, aquaculture industry and radio/tv equi pment.

22

The demands in the Faroese industry have lead the company to grow and adapt to the market, and with good connection and input from the customers, MP Teknik found itself creating or implementing pioneer solutions that were not done before in the Faroe Islands, for example developing AIS/GPS tracers for long line fishing vessels, setting up MOB man overboard systems with PLB’s and doing tests with

hull cleaning drones amongst other solutions. Being in a small country with a large maritime industry, MP Teknik has chosen to invest in the people, equipping them to the different kinds of tasks that come up regularly. The team is well trained with regular courses from the different brands MP Teknik represents. Being in a nichè market in some areas, this also creates a strong team, that is being confronted with tasks that need a special solution on a daily basis. Because of this, the team also does service tasks abroad, where the versatility of the technicians comes handy and the experience and knowhow to solve a new situation is common. With the tough nature around the Faroe Islands, the customers have high demands for reliable equipment, both in aquaculture and in the fishing industry. MP Teknik wishes to achieve the best

possible service for the customer, making sure the equipment is reliable for the tasks they are put up to. The close cooperation with the customers has seemed to be one of the invaluable assets for MP Teknik. NORÐLÝSIÐ: – WHAT ARE MP TEKNIK’S PROSPECTS IN REGARDS OF INNOVATION? PG: – MP Teknik has worked with fire extinguishing systems for many years and is the only provider of the environmental extinguishing clean agent gas, FS 49 C2. After being approved as a electrical contractor early in 2019, the next achievement for MP Teknik has been the ABA approval/certification. This allows MP Teknik to dimension and install fire alarm systems both on land and onboard vessels and barges. Combining these strengths with other certifications by FMA (Faroese Maritime authorities) and DNV GL, this gives MP Teknik the possibility to inspect vessels all around the world for fire alarm systems, fire extinguishing systems, megging and technical installations such as radio communication equipment and VDR (Voyage Data Recorders). NORÐLÝSIÐ: – HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE EMPLOYED AT MP TEKNIK? AND DO YOU HAVE MANY APPRENTICES? PG: – Currently there are 15-16 people employed, of whom there are 3 apprentices.

NORÐLÝSIÐ: – AND LASTLY, WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED? PG: – The Main Office is located in Klaksvík, and early this year MP Teknik purchased a large building in Funningsfirði. Norðlýsið hereby thanks Mr. Gerðalíð for the interview and wishes MP Teknik a prosperous future.

The weather in the Faroe Islands – what about it?

PAGE

To explain the pattern of daily weather in the Faroe Islands is no simple task. There are many ifs and buts… The weather changes all the time, it nearly never stays the same for long periods of time. In the early morning there can be sunshine, a few hours later cloudy, then drizzle or rain – sometimes snow. In the evening the clouds open again and give us a few sunny spells before the sun goes down. We are placed in the middle of a huge ocean, we´re just a few cliffs sticking out of it! That is how we should think when it comes to the weather here in the Faroe Islands. It is the North Atlantic Ocean – and what goes on above it and in it – that influences the weather. The Gulf Stream makes our climate mild. Our winters are mild and the summers a bit cool with fog, when the wind direction is right. The highest and lowest temperatures ever measured are 26,3°C (july 2003) and 12,3°C (March 2001), respectively. Both temperatures were measured at Vagar Airport. The mean temperature is somewhat different. In summer the average temperature is about 12°C and in winter the average is about 3°C. Not much difference, this is Sub-Arctic maritime climate. Other places e.g. Southern Norway or Central Sweden which are on same latitude vary much more in temperature with much warmer summers and much colder winters. An important factor is all the dynamic lowpressure systems travelling this way from Eastern USA or Canada. They bring frequent changes in

26

wind directions. When the low-pressure systems travel fast across our area, we experience all wind directions in just a few hours and thus a variety of weather – cold mist, sunny spells, rain or drizzle, a leap and/or drop in temperature as well as snow or sleet. It also depends on how the low-pressure systems travel and where they go. When they are moving eastwards to the south of the Faroes the cold air from the Arctic comes down towards us. When they travel to the north of the Faroes warm air from south is brought up this way. A saying among Faroese is that we can have all four seasons in just one morning! The dynamic systems with high or low pressure are at times not moving so fast – then the weather is more stable, of course. We were occupied by the British during second world war. They called the islands the land of maybe – mostly because of the weather and what the weather has done to the islanders. Sometimes in summer, the airflow can be from the high north taking the temperature all the way down to just a few degrees above freezing. A summer like that is very cold, especially in the northern part of the islands. In the southern islands the weather is much better, about 4-6 degrees warmer. Vice versa in the winter warm air from the European continent can bring the temperature up to almost 20 degrees. The statistics go back to 1860s. Initially the Scottish Meteorological Society put up a station in Torshavn in late 1860s, but ever since 1875 it

little doubt about that. Let us not forget the rising temperature curve for the area in the Arctic and the accelleration of melting of ice. It is in fact the consequences in the changes in the climate in the Polar region that we measure here in the Faroe Islands. While the temperature curves are slowly going upwards, we must get used to even warmer autumns and winters in the future with even longer periods between snowy winters. The curves have gone up and down ever since measuring began, but this time there is no sign of stopping it! – at least for now….

PAGE

has been Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI). Most of their records are available on world wide web. Climate changes are an issue here on the Faroes – as it is elsewhere. Looking at the numbers in the statistics there are changes to be seen. Most changes in temperature are in the winter. The mean temperature for September to March is rising slowly. On average the autumn is warmer than it used to be – thus delaying the beginning of winter. The winters are milder than they used to be – the days with snow are significantly fewer now. The changes come from the reduced amount of cold air decending from Polar region. There is very
