Kilmore, as Victoria's first inland town, not surprisingly possessed its built character at a relatively early date. Those parts of today's commercial streetscape
(Sydney Street) which were built after the town's major growth period in the early 1860s, nevertheless have a similar architectural form and ornamentation to their
forbearers. This unified character relates particularly to the street verandahs where, once the flimsy canvas awnings were discarded for permanent structures, the form adopted varied little over a long period during the 19th century, being generally of one storey, built of timber (at least timber posts) and having a universal concave roof form.
