Last Lecture Conversations with ...

David Doherty OAM

What would I say if I had to give my last lecture.

The inaugural Last Lecture Conversation was held Wednesday, 13th of March from 12.30pm to 1.30pm in the Anderson Room. We were most honoured to have David Doherty OAM as our very first conversationalist.

David received an Order of Australia Medal for his contribution to Australian football and to business. He is a consulting professional, a Director of Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Australia and on the Industry Advisory Boards for RMIT and Victoria Universities. David describes current consuming interests as ‘founder and explorer’ for the global Supply Chain and Logistics Observatory (SCLALO) and exploration of methods for rewiring your brain philosophies.

David was General Manager of CSL Limited (Biopharmaceutical Industry), a Director of AFL (Australian Football League) Victoria and Chair of the Canada-Australia Institute and of the Victorian Supply Chain Excellence Project.

In earlier life he umpired over 300 games of Australian Football and was also involved in coaching. He attributes much of his eventual success off field to these grounding pun intended - experiences.

We extend gratitude to member David Wilson and to Nola Birch, Disability Liaison Officer at The University of Melbourne, for the organising of these unique forums.

Future conversationalists, topics and dates are being confirmed.

The Women’s Forum Female graduates come together each month to participate in discussion on topics that vary from social history to current affairs.

Salient points from the well-attended Justice and Fairness forum on the 20th February included: •

Justice will suffer if the rewards are not forthcoming - most people seek comfort rather than the conflict that appears to dominate the current system.

•

Legal judgements should take into account the rights of the community at large and balance the ongoing dilemma: justice as it affects the individual versus justice as it affects the community.

•

The concepts of fairness and justice evoke both intellectual and emotional responses with justice leaning more towards an intellectual response and fairness more to an emotional response.

•

The element of equality is usually present in both concepts particularly in relation to the political, economic and social aspects of the debate. The task for lawmakers, politicians and planners is how to incorporate these potentially conflicting elements.

•

The British legal system has been described as the Rolls Royce of law – but in all fairness, how many people can afford a Rolls Royce?

Influenza Vaccination Day a great success

The Graduate Union is proud to have hosted the launch of the be flusmart and you’re a lifesaver campaign and the opening of the national Influenza Vaccination season with the Influenza Specialist Group (ISG), Bupa Health and Wellness and BioCSL on Thursday 14th March.

More than a 100 members attended for free flu shots and to learn from ISG and the following organisations about prevention, primary care and public health.

The event received considerable media coverage with evening news reports by Channel 7 and the ABC and a host of social media broadcasts.

Throughout the morning, Dr Alan Hampson and the wonderful nurse from Bupa Wellness, both pictured to the right, were kept busy with interviews. Alan is a recognised international expert in influenza who provides advice to the World Health Organisation in Geneva and guides public health influenza preparedness in Australia through the development of national vaccination programs and policy. ISG’s annual Flu Awareness campaign has lead to a ten-fold increase in influenza vaccine uptake and to a Commonwealth Government policy decision to provide free vaccine to the elderly.

The key message from the day was that we all have a responsibility to help avoid the epidemic levels of flu infection already seen in the US and Europe over their winter season. As stressed by ISG, Australians are urged to get the flu shot, if not for themselves but for others who are more susceptible to the severe complications from the deadly viral strains heading to the southern hemisphere.

Dr Hampson spoke to the sad news of over 80 child deaths in the US this flu season, together with the state of emergency declared in New York with over 19,000 reported cases of influenza.

Dr Gerard Vaughan

The Future of the Art Museum Gerard Vaughan recently returned to The University of Melbourne as the Gerry Higgins Professorial Fellow, a position that was attached to the Australian Institute of Art History. He is currently writing a history of private art collecting in Australia to be published by Melbourne University Publishing (MUP) in 2014. Gerard is well known to us all here in Victoria as the long-standing Director of the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) from 1999 to 2012 during which time he oversaw a major redevelopment program that resulted in the space occupied by the NGV more than doubling.

Professor Vaughan was responsible for a broad ranging program of temporary exhibitions and for major fundraising to develop the galleryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s collection, securing many important old and modern masterpieces for Melbourne. Prior to his position with the NGV he was Director of the British Museum Development Trust in London, and oversaw the expansion and rebuilding of the British Museum after the departure of the British Library from Bloomsbury to its new premises. Gerard spent thirteen years at Oxford University where his achievements included completing his doctorate, holding a research fellowship in art history, acting as Private Secretary to Resident members $10 the Vice-Chancellor and becoming Non-resident members $30 Deputy Director of development for Non-members and guests $40 the university.

Professor Geoffrey Blainey AC

Writing the History of the World.

Professor Geoffrey Blainey is Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best known living historian. His Short History of The World, an international best-seller, can be read in many languages. Another recent book, A Short History of Christianity, is reported to have topped the best-seller list in South America last year.

His televised history of Australia, The Blainey View, was shown in ten episodes on ABC television in the early 1980s.

Geoffrey Blainey was Professor of Economic History and then of History at The University of Melbourne, and he also held a Chair at Harvard University in the United States of America. He has been Chairman of a variety of national institutions, including the Australia Council for the Arts, the National Council for the Centenary of Federation and the Australia-China Council.

In New York in 1988, along with the celebrated economist Professor J. K. Galbraith, he was awarded the Encyclopedia Britannicaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Gold Medal for Excellence in the Dissemination of Knowledge for the Benefit of Mankind. He is also a well known speaker, and several of his speeches have been republished in books entitled Great Australian Speeches.

Professor Blainey has written thrty-eight full length books, some of which have been published through Melbourne University Press.

Dally Messenger III

Ceremonies and Celebrations

At the first monthly luncheon for 2013, Dally Messenger III, the pioneer and don of civil celebrancy spoke to the nature of secular ceremonies and celebrations.

With life member Marie Dowling in the audience, Dally spoke first of the beautiful ceremony he performed in the library at Graduate House in the 1970s to join in marriage Marie and fellow librarian Colin Watson. Not only had he brought along photographs of what he wondered might have been the first civil ceremony of two librarians in a library, but he presented one of their ceremony readings, a famous poem by Christina Rosetti: A Birthday.

My Heart is like a singing bird whose nest is in a watered shoot; My heart is like an apple-tree whose boughs are bent with thickset fruit; My heart is like a rainbow shell that paddles in a halcyon sea; My heart is gladder than all these because my love has come to me.

Before letting us settle, some with tears in eyes, on the sheer beauty and emotion of this serendipity, we were taken next through history, beginning with the 19th July, 1973 appointment by Attorney General Lionel Murphy, in spite of opposition from the public service, his own staff and the Labor Party Caucus, of the first celebrant, Lois D’Arcy. Murphy’s ideal of bringing substance, meaning and beauty into civil ceremonies for non-religious people became increasingly popular, with the number of civil ceremonies (green line in graph) becoming greater from 1969 to 2004 than the number performed by clergy (red).

Dally explained that the last ten years of 11,000 celebrants being appointed, when an ideal number for Australia would be between 2,000 and 2,500, was leading to divisions within the celebrant profession which he labelled as the clash between the legalists, seeing civil marriage only in terms of a legal contract, and the ceremonialists seeing their role as much more.

For him, a masterful celebrant knows and works skilfully with human psychology and the human needs to express emotion and to communicate through rites of passage at a serious level. This ceremonialist celebrant knows that it is about the creative, visual and performing arts. It is about choosing architecture, judging interior design, having a feel for landscaping and contexts of beauty. It is about music, poetry, great prose quotations, singing together, arranging/suggesting/producing great music - live or recorded. It is about choreography and movement and the skill to bring all these together. It is about excellent writing and true life story telling. It is about the celebrant’s task to listen actively, to assess, to write, to read, to suggest, to encourage and to facilitate a powerful, effective, rewarding, enjoyable and stirring ceremony.

Dr Katrina Skewes McFerran

Depending on music to make you feel better: good or bad idea?

Dr Katrina McFerran, Associate Professor at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, and Head of Music Therapy, presented her research on the ways that adolescents use music, and focused on the detrimental effects of the unhealthy use of music.

She began by explaining that the advent and accessibility of mP3 players and mobile music-playing devices has led to the vast majority of our technology savvy youth being constantly with a source of entertainment and communication.

Katrina’s research, and many previous studies, has confirmed that youth use and report using music for good - to motivate exercise, to alleviate boredom, to manage mood and as a source of strength, energy and comfort in their lives. Music is to express identity, to assist with coping and to manage their relationships. All of this is perhaps not news to anyone encountering the adolescent with ear phones!

Over many years of working as a music therapist, however, Katrina observed that some vulnerable young people listened repeatedly to songs associated with negative experiences in their lives, or primed themselves with negativity through their song choices. Digging deeper, she found that these youth did, indeed, often feel worse, rather than better, after engaging with their preferred music. Her critical point here is that it was the choice of preferred music, rather than the qualities of the music, that gave rise to the negativity.

Hence, while healthy young people showed benefit from listening to heavy metal, unhealthy youth could feel worse even when engaging with gentle classical music. Her research thus counters a generally held tenet that it is the music qualities that account for the negative outcomes reported by many previous researchers.

Her contention is that it is a mistake to depend on music to feel better. Yes, music is powerful, but its potential to influence needs to be activated. That activation stems from a decision to listen to a particular type of music and from the behaviour of engagement with the music.

For a healthy person, this choice is a health resourcing exercise to find energy, or to undergo some form of catharsis in the normal course of grieving or sadness. For the person who is vulnerable, this choice can be health depleting and result in the sustaining of an increasingly negative state.

Katrina outlined simple strategies for vulnerable youth to use in choosing music. One approach, for example, was to create a playlist designed to assist in moving away from negativity and rumination to a more positive state. Rather than being a compilation of supposedly ‘happy songs’, it is more likely to be successful if mood is matched first, and then influenced step by step - song by song - to move the self strategically and knowingly from a circular thinking pattern to one that is more variable and allowing of positive thoughts.

For the person who relates to a youth who is using music in a way that reinforces negative tendencies, Dr McFerran’s advice was to be gentle, caring and to try not to teach them a lesson, or steal their music away. She reminded us that many of us too are passionate about our music, and that vulnerable people are sensitive to criticism.

The take home message is that a vulnerable person can be encouraged to learn that they are the powerful force in the relationship with music - not the music - and thus how to move to a more positive state. www.graduatehouse.com.au | ABN: 55610 664 963 | Incorporated Association Registration No. A0023234B

Tax Effective Death In the second of his four finance seminars in 2013, Mr Peter Clark of DCA Advisors will talk to the capital gains and superannuation matters that should be addressed to avoid negative impacts on the finalisation of an estate and to limit the imposition of income tax on the estate and on beneficiaries.

Topics for discussion will include: â&#x20AC;˘ tax and the family home and other assets transferred to beneficiaries. â&#x20AC;˘ when an estate can be subject to tax. â&#x20AC;˘ tax and superannuation death benefits.

Peter will provide worked examples and strategies which can assist in lowering the impact of tax.

FINANCE SEMINAR 28th February, 2013 Estate Planning: What You Need to Know In first defining estate planning as working out the best way to distribute assets on death, taking into account family circumstances and income tax matters, Peter spoke to the circumstances that give rise to potential legal nightmares from wills.

He explained that certain assets may not be estate assets, and may pass to another person through the operation of other laws. Dying without a will means that assets will be distributed in accordance with state laws. This may cause delays and additional costs in dealing with the estate, and children under 18 left without parents may have a guardian appointed by the state.

To provide protection in bankruptcy and family court matters and to prevent beneficiaries from spending inheritances inappropriately, Peter explained testamentary trusts which he noted could also be used to make tax effective distributions to children under 18 years. Cautioning that blended families require special estate planning attention, Peter spoke to the concept of Mutual Will and to the importance of drawing up powers of attorney.

Finally, Peter gave the following advice: a solicitor can draw your will and power of attorney however it is important that tax consequences for the estate (if any), and for the beneficiaries, are taken into account. He suggested that having a tax plan in place prior to death is advisable so that you do not have to rule from the grave.

The Shepard walks a fine plank When you think of pirates your mind often drifts to fantasies of man-of-war ships, 50 guns aimed at some poor tall ship and perhaps a pirate captain with a parrot on his shoulder screaming profanities as he prepares for treasure. It is, in fact, usually completely unthought of to consider whale conservationist group The Sea Shepard to be pirates. That was the general consensus until the 27th of February, 2013 when the US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal decided that under article 101, 1(a) of United Nations Law of the Sea Convention which defines piracy as â&#x20AC;&#x153;any illegal acts of violence or detention, or any act of depredation, committed for private ends by the crew or the passengers of a private ship or a private aircraftâ&#x20AC;? the actions of The Sea Shepard constitute as piracy.

The confusion lies in what constitutes as “private ends”. Numerous lawyers argued that “private ends” does not simply refer to financial gains but also includes acts of vengeance or hatred, but the definition falls short of political or religious acts, making them separate issues.

This failure to include political or religious acts was one of much contention during the case.

The Sea Shepard claims its actions are for the environment, which blurs the lines of the “private ends” definition. While this verdict is not clear cut, it is well understood that The Sea Shepard’s actions constitute as violence, and they will remain pirates until decided otherwise.

Sorry to burst your bubble Some of our readers may remember an article in the 2012 August edition of our Monthly Newsletter detailing the success of resident member Dief Alexander for his part in the Australian arm of the conference at which the existence of the Higgs Boson Particle was announced to the world. In a recent swing of media, it has been revealed that the Higgs Boson Particle has a much darker discovery behind its celebration - the end of the universe.

Recently, the modern quantum theory of subatomic particles and their interactions was examined and precise calculations showed that the Higgs Boson is ultimately related to the stability of our universe. According to quantum theory, the lowest energy state in our universe, where there is nothing but space and time, is not the lowest possible state at all. These lower states are understood to involve the decay of all the protons in all the matter in the universe, ergo, space and time, everything, ceases to exist.

Now you might think this will happen millions of billions of years away, but the scary fact is, it could happen at any time, anywhere in the universe, expanding at the speed of light from a tiny bubble.

Don’t run for the hills yet. For starters, it probably wouldn’t do you any good. The theory still has many major components to take into consideration, the first and foremost being gravity and the experimentally observed neutrino masses. The theory also fails to encompass the idea of dark matter, which remains ever elusive. All these things impact upon the state and conditions of our universe greatly, and certainly affect the Higgs Boson.

A New Degree of Separation Our world is awash with social media websites. A site such as Facebook requires you to ‘upload’ photos and add ‘friends’. These ‘friends’ can then like and share your photos. A twitter account is shorter and sweeter - you can ‘tweet’ about stories and ideas or post the trivial “this is what I’m doing right at this moment” ‘tweet’. In recent years the social media craze has even hit the professional scene with websites such as Linkedin allowing you to add referees and previous jobs to an almost online resume.

Here is where it starts to get concerning. Facebook, for example, collects information based upon what you ‘post’ onto their website and constructs advertisements for products based on those posts.

They can also scan your photos and find you ‘friends’ based on who is in the background of those photos. These methods of advertising have been used for just over two years now and provide huge revenue for Facebook as a business.

But what if we could take this one step further? What if a website could tell you how many degrees of separation there was between you and anyone in the world without you inputting anything? Well that step has already been taken and it has been taken by a man named Neil Goldman. He is the founder of Relationship Science and is focusing his efforts on creating a program to increase business connections and relationships.

The program will work by finding all those ‘friends’ that the person, say, James Packer, has in relation to you. Maybe, your uncle’s friend’s wife’s cousin’s boss is Mr Packer, in which case you can work your way through the degrees of separation to contact him personally.

What will this mean for the future of business relationships? Who knows? However, it does confirm the general feeling that we are in a ‘relationship economy’.

Universities Australia Elects New Chair.

James Cook University Vice-Chancellor, Sandra Harding, is the elected new Chair of Universities Australia. Professor Harding is an economic sociologist with over 15 years of experience in executive positions in Australian universities. Previously, she has also sat as the Deputy Chair of Universities Australia.

The academic community has welcomed Sandra to this position. Jeannie Rea, the President of the National Tertiary Education Union commented that the NTEU was happy with the decision. Professor Harding’s predecessor, Melbourne University Vice Chancellor, Glyn Davis, has said that “her relentless dedication, passion and enthusiasm has helped shape [James Cook University] into one of the world’s leading universities focusing on the tropics.”

Reciprocal Association News In each newsletter we hope to profile an association with which we have an affiliation. In this issue we focus on a club in the midnorth of the United States of America.

The University Club of St Paul Located in the city of Saint Paul, Minnesota, not far from Minneapolis, The University Club of St Paul was founded in 1907 (just four years prior to the establishment of our own Association in 1911). The Graduate Union has reciprocal rights with all three of this Club’s venues. In one you can dine, in another you can exercise and in a third you can rest.

The original clubhouse, Summit Avenue, was completed in 1913. It is open seven days a week for formal dining in the main member dining (Ramsey) room with clear views of the Downtown Saint Paul skyline and winding miles of the Mississippi River Valley. Casual dining is offered in the Members’ Bar and the Varsity Grill, with outdoor dining experiences on the deck available during summer.

Additionally, Summit Avenue provides meeting facilities, free Wi-Fi and a library. They can also arrange for access to a fitness centre, an outdoor swimming pool which opens only in June, July and August, and an outdoor clay tennis court.

The second venue, known as the Saint Paul Athletic Club, is in the central business district of Saint Paul, about one mile from the Summit Avenue clubhouse. This fourteen storey building was opened in 1918 as the home of the Saint Paul Athletic Club and is near the end of a significant multi-level renovation to open up 65,000 square feet of athletic space with an indoor pool, squash court, racquetball/ handball court, fitness centre, Pilates, yoga and aerobic studios, running tracks, saunas, whirlpools, and many other features.

The third property is Stout’s Island Lodge located on a private island in the 1,800 acre Red Cedar Lake in north-eastern Barron County in northern Wisconsin. Built in the style of an Adirondack great camp in the early 20th century, this wooded retreat now has 42 guest rooms in the historic Main Lodge, the Shore Lodge and the surrounding cabins. Furnished with an antique atmosphere, each room has a private bath and most have fireplaces and/ or screen porches. In addition to indoor billiards, board games, a piano and a library, the facility offers a host of outdoor options such as bird watching, bocce, walking, evening bonfires and fishing.

What’s happening in Council?

I write this April report to inform you that full Council has now met for a second time this year and that the second round of meetings of each standing Committees has commenced.

For the benefit of new readers of our newsletter, the current governance structure is illustrated as follows. Should you require a little more detail, please refer to my ‘What’s happening in Council?’ section in the March newsletter sent to you last month. If you missed this, please feel free to download it from our website at http://www.graduatehouse. com.au/list/newsletter (or ask at our offices for a copy).

We continue to progress well in developing our new constitution as a company limited by guarantee, and, in parallel, in drafting new regulations on the Council Code of Conduct, our governance charter and our approaches for elections, and for meetings of members and for Council and its committees. On the 16th of March, our dedicated Councillors met for an afternoon retreat to advance the documentation associated with this constitutional change. I hope that you will all join me in extending sincere gratitude to them all for this volunteer time out of their very busy existing schedules.

In addition to looking to the future, we are progressing well with the audit of our end of 2012 financial results. Preliminary figures indicate that we have come in almost exactly on budget notwithstanding the effects on revenue throughout the year as we undertook a number of high priority capital expenditure projects that included the refurbishment of the ground floor of the Stella Langford Wing, the installation of a new audio-visual system in two of our meeting rooms, a rolling refurbishment of our terrace accommodation rooms and a number of other projects that were absolutely required for safety and continued operations.

We continue to meet also through a number of very active working parties. Our Access to the Register of Members Working Party, as the name suggests, is developing further our policy on this matter and is also making recommendations for the inclusion of relevant clauses in our new constitution. Our newly convened William Berry Wing Working Party met for the first time this year to develop short and longer term priorities for our terraces from 222 to 234 Leicester Street. The Music Committee has developed an exciting program of four Music Sundays beginning with that on the 21st of April for the Family across its Generations Day. We hope that you will enjoy the new ‘open-all-dayactivity’ format of these Sundays and encourage you to secure the attendance of friends, colleagues and family well in advance.

Our Front Entrance Working Party will also be reconvening this year to continue the development of a plan for the front entrance at 220 Leicester Street to be more prominent.

the compilation of constitutional documents and a new working party which is being constituted to raise significant funds for The Graduate Union through benefaction and endowments.

Following his inauguration at the end of last year, I was pleased to introduce our new President, Major General Professor Jeffery V Rosenfeld AM, to the Vice Chancellor of The University of Melbourne, Professor Glyn Davis, and to the new Provost, Professor Margaret Sheil. During this meeting, we were informed that the University has been following our successful progress with governance and management reform and our emergence into a period of growth and vibrancy. As the University expands its ‘graduate precinct’ through a staged building and relocation program for its rapidly expanding graduate schools and research centres, we hope to be able to support this expansion through the continued provision of our high quality services and facilities for ever increasing numbers of graduates enrolled at The University of Melbourne.

As our longer term members will be aware, we have undertaken a series of external reviews of our governance and financial controls. In tracking our progress with the recommendations from these 2010, 2011 and 2012 reviews, we have compiled a checklist which we have agreed to update on a six-monthly basis beginning in the middle of this year. Through this objective demonstration of progress, I am confident to address the governance regulations required under the new Australian Charities and Not for profits Commission (ACNC) which began operations early December last year and which requires an activity statement by the end of this year.

We invite you to join us for the Twilight Lecture on the early evening of the 27th March.

Not only do we have a presentation from our renown Australian historian, Professor Geoffrey Blainey, and a delicious array of canapés and beverages, but also an hour of tastings before the lecture begins at 6.30pm. Come in at 5.30pm to taste gourmet products that will include wine, chocolates, cheese, spices and tea. Tastings will continue after the lecture and you will also have the opportunity either to purchase products on the night or to order ahead for a special occasion – yes, for many of us there are Easter considerations!

Research Scholarship Opening for Applications The Graduate Union Research Scholarship is to provide financial support to a resident member of The Graduate Union who is undertaking a research post-graduate degree (Masters or Doctorate).

Candidate Eligibility This scholarship is open to members of The Graduate Union who are also:

-

residents of The Graduate Union for a minimum of nine (9) months over 2013;

-

enrolled at a university to undertake a post-graduate research degree, such as a masters or a doctorate degree; and

-

undertaking original research.

Selection Criteria

The Council of The Graduate Union will rank each eligible application according to the following criteria:

Purpose

The funds will be used for a well-described and well-defined specific purpose within the applicantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s research project. Suitable specific purposes include: (a) the purchase or hire of specialised equipment and/or consumables; (b) attendance at a key international conference to present results; (c) payment of research expenses such as travel to field sites or payment to research subjects; and (d) publication or intellectual property costs (e.g. to print final dissertation; to print an article in a journal; to obtain a patent).

Research Stage

The applicant will be in mid to later stages of their research degree. Their research proposal will have been approved by the relevant post-graduate research committee of the university of enrolment, the ethics application (where relevant) will have been approved and the applicant will have commenced and made some progress with their research.

Accountability

Quotes and receipts will/can be provided to demonstrate specific purpose expenditure. Funds will not be expended on general living expenses (accommodation, food, utilities, etc.)

Justification

The funds are needed and are not currently available for the identified specific purpose. Funding of the specific purpose will advance the applicantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s research project: (a) through inclusion of a needed project component; (b) by increasing the degree of innovation of the research; (c) by translating the research for public benefit; and/or (d) through supporting the applicant to complete and publish the dissertation and research outcomes.

Presentation

The submitted application will be professional and with attention to detail.

The applicant will give confidence to Council at interview that they will represent The Graduate Union and the legacy of the scholarship with dignity and honour.
