Carpe Diem. A Latin phrase meaning “seize the day,” I first heard “carpe diem” while enjoying the movie Dead Poets’ Society. These three short words have taken on substantial meaning to how individuals choose to approach life; they definitely have shifted mine over the years. They bring to mind the collect (prayer) associated with the August 13 feast of Anglican bishop Jeremy Taylor (1667): O God, whose days are without end, and whose mercies cannot be numbered: Make us, like your servant Jeremy Taylor, deeply aware of the shortness and uncertainty of human life; and let your Holy Spirit direct us in holiness and righteousness all our days, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Following Jesus, let us “carpe diem” and trust that all shall be well. - The Rev. Ollie V. Rencher, Rector Explore and engage life at GSL and invite others for the journey! Our Vision is to be a thriving community of hope, belonging, and healing through worship, parish life, and service, and who rejoices in the love of Jesus to transform the world.
