Reflections on being a GRACE researcher February 2011, Yemen Question 1: What does it mean to you to be part of GRACE? Please give examples (show) GRACE is really a respectable network that tries to empower women using different perspectives. GRACE made me look at things with other lenses, introduced many concepts that are inside me but couldn't come out because there is no motivation. Others acceptance, self love, self appreciation, courage, motivation, saying the truth, tolerance and resilience are the ways of grace to empower women. GRACE made me come closer to women's issues and suffering and opened my eyes to look deeper in women's life and their images about themselves. GRACE made me also understand what the meaning of women’s inhumanity with women is; I did not realize this issue before. I do analyze events happening around me, now with other concepts, mainly from a deep thinking perspective. GRACE provided me with handouts, books, articles about women's empowerment and made me understand what a change means? To think from the inside out is a new concept for me. The whole social interaction is new and now the method showing and not telling is the latest idea that I got from GRACE. GRACE brought by that to change the self is the first step to empower others and let them see their inside. We cannot do something for others if we don't practice it ourselves. If we cannot be courageous enough we cannot expect the others to be that, that holds true for other attitudes. To self‐knowledge, GRACE drew the way by many ideas, thoughts and practices. GRACE by the qualified trainers made me watch even films with other lenses which is giving me a thorough insight to women empowerment and practicing it and having the sense of analyzing the events and feelings of being empowered in order to encourage me to break the fear inside me first and then be a light in my community. I got to know myself better and started the process of healing the wound from inside after I got inspired by GRACE. GRACE is a big source of inspiration, knowledge and empowerment for me, therefore it means really a lot to be part of it. Question 2: How did it make a change in you? Please give examples. (Show) In July 2010, I stood for the rights of my female students as a Sheikh (a Yemeni living in Saudi Arabia) wanted to give the chance to male students only to go for a practical month in King Saud University –Saudi Arabia with the excuse female students need MAHREM!!! So he is going to change the policy next year and will take female students as well. Courage was the main motive behind that and my motive is GRACE.
Accepting others as they are is one of the most important attitudes that started to change in me. And being less judgmental is just a miracle that occurs to me after GRACE and this has been fixed in me. Main changes in me are that I love myself much more than before GRACE, appreciate it, feel proud of being a woman. I do my work without getting affected by critic, underestimation or disagreement. Recently, I gave a presentation that I was proud of and did not get hurt by the critic of my boss. I took the comments into consideration but did not belittle my work.
