PRAIRIE ISLAND SHED

The objective of this 2 week project was to design a shed for Prairie Island, a native plant project in the center of downtown Durham. The idea was to create a place for storage and a seedling greenhouse for more native plant research.

Site Visit

The site visit provided knowledge about the different native plants grown on the site, without wasting irrigation water, and using resources on mowing and maintenance. Many of the plants are essential to the species in North Carolina, so this project is important in keeping ecological balance. The design of the shed provides a welcoming entrance for shade and rest, while allowing views into the greenhouse and the surrounding landscape.

The contrast between the solid cement piece and the light greenhouse allow for a break in the landscape, to call attention to it while traveling on the trail. Having the shed be slightly embedded allows for multi use of the roof plane, especially as a viewing post.
