ILLUMINATION PROJECT

The objective of the final project of the semester was to create a way to manipulate light with an object. I had free range to use any kind of light or material to express this work of art and I needed to think of a way to display it.

I was drawn to the idea of looking up like when you’re in an observatory because I remember having glow in the dark stars on the ceiling was magical and awe inspiring as a child. I looked at different geometries and patterns and was drawn to types of mandalas and islamic art.

Process

I wanted to represent life and motherhood and the beauty that having a baby could project onto your world.

Cardboard Workspace

had just given birth to a baby girl the day before this project started and since my mind was on babies and children, I had decided wanted to create something that could entertain small children and babies.

started sketching and trying to work with many ideas to create something that my three children could enjoy, from light books to scenes, to night lights.

The final result of this project was a beautiful way to display light and lights of different colors. It rotated slowly which caused a dematerialization of the ceiling. was able to keep the exterior of the model uniform with the black, but it still had textures that did not distract from the projection on the ceiling.
